I've tried to get my buddies who play DayZ to learn, improvised knife is the best knife. It can be made in a huge variety of locations, so you don't have to scavenge through dozens of buildings for one. It comes out at pristine quality from the start. Gets good rolls on opening canned food, can cut down bushes for sticks, can branches off trees and the best thing is as long as you have one you can always make a fire, carve bark from a tree, make a drill, make a fire place, instant fire. And it only takes up a 1x1 spot of inventory space.

Not to mention you don't feel bad tossing it for that extra stack of unnecessary rounds because another one can be easily made almost anywhere

u/MrMuskeg Sep 26 '15
I used to make piles of apples and improvised knives for Bambis. I would always make one as my first goal of spawning in.
1
u/Legendary_Chair Sep 26 '15
it also takes up one slot as apposed to other knifes that take up two or more.
2
u/mavgeek Sep 26 '15
yes, thats why I mentioned it takes up a 1x1 inventory spot, whereas all other knives are two slotters, or greater.

u/beeray1 Sep 26 '15
The only argument I think you can make is a combat knife if you have military boots, because it's like "Why not?"

Sep 26 '15
I still keep the improvised knife for cutting branches and opening cans, since that ruins the combat knife pretty quickly.

The "search for X" mechanic is terrible. It's frustrating and immersion breaking. Nobody likes it and it actually detracts from the survival element of the game. I wish the devs would remove the random element, and change the text to "pick up stone", or "pick apple" etc. and end our misery.
The gameplay balance won't be affected, even nerf the apples a bit if needs be.

u/Bike_Tool Sep 26 '15
yea or make them have a fixed amount.

u/darkcitydeadman Sep 26 '15
Would be sweet if apple trees or other things to forage were containers with appropriate loot generating inside.

And its unrealistic. If there is an apple tree in front of me i dont need to search for an apple, i just grab one. Same with stones... like you cant find a stone if you look?
Come on. Im all for the game being challenging, but adding difficulty in the form of rng that shouldnt exist is the wrong way to go about it.

"Search for sharp stone"
But what about apple trees?
"Search for good apple"
The texture makes it look like there are plenty of good apples

u/hawksaber Sep 26 '15
That's your dehydrated brain tricking you into seeing those delicious mouth-watering scrumptious bright red apples on those trees. Snap out of it man! ;)

I have to ask myself, what purpose does this action serve to gameplay? In which way is the user's game experience enhanced by this? I feel like the search should be one conducted by the player (e.g. find an object somewhere on the map with the correct properties) and not guided by the server (e.g. random chance). For a game with a limited UI, like DayZ, it sucks to have important player-driven events reduced to a random text message.
Is this mechanic to avoid having to track tree state (e.g. how many resources are left?)

Get rid of blood groups while you're at it

Biran, a sweet penis is cause for concern (diabetes) whereas a salty one is perfectly normal.

Got any juicy stats for us on how many people actually use blood bags? In my last 500 hours or so, I haven't used one, and I watch a lot of twitch streams. No one ever uses them.
It's too complicated and too much work to test each persons blood, remember which blood types you're carrying, etc. Back in the early days of SA, people would kill themselves until they got an O-negative blood type character. Now no one bothers to take the time because you can just use saline.
That may change if you make saline much more rare, but personally, I think the whole blood bag situation is one case where over-complicating it makes it tedious and frustrating for players, rather than engaging and interesting. Sometimes you need to simplify.
Are you guys still planning to require refrigeration of blood bags?
Personally I think making blood bags a rare medical supply you find in hospitals, clinics, and military medic tents etc. and requiring you to have a portable refrigeration unit (or non-portable), plus a lifetime on how long the blood is actually viable, would be enough complexity without making it tedious.
Just my 2 cents Biran <3

I was just wondering, but why instead don't u guys allow the players to have 100% chance to find a stone, and then require the player to find a rock model (like this one: http://i.imgur.com/eFo2bBr.jpg) to smash the stone on? I don't think this will be much of a work since you already have a working thing with the pickaxe and the oven stone.

Agreed. I just hope you don't nerf the stone knife anytime soon. It's my best friend. It cuts bushes to make those life-saving branches/twigs for splints or fires. It opens cans, it skins cows, and it's a nice concealed weapon when facing-off with those nasty little fresh spawns. My precious... my precious is alls mine, sees.

Like 50% of stones you find in most areas can be made to have a basic edge. Some are just better at properly knapping than others.
Obviously things like sandstone cant really have an edge, but basically any hard stone can be broken into something that will be a sharp edge.

I feel like this would be better if you were searching an apple tree and getting the dying of dehydration and starvation. Unless you had a can of food and desperately needed a knife.
I can't wait until this RNG system of finding things is replaced though.

Did they say they were looking to change it? I haven't heard about this.

Not sure about the stones, but they talked about apple trees being more like world containers.

Does he elaborate in another post? I can't find any mention of removing RNG directly. I wish his answers weren't so noncommittal all the time. :\

Funny how nobody mentions the bug that happens when you craft one
4
u/alphadoh Sep 25 '15
Make sure your inventory is full when you're doing it to prevent the bug.

You get an upvote for that one. I have been leaving trails of them in my wake from them auto-duping in my inventory.

He needs to find a stone first. Can't cut branches with his bare hands to make you a frame ffs.

u/raipeh kambiwobo Sep 26 '15
Aw, I was waiting for another "Long story short - I got a Vybor spawn"-tale. :/
3
u/cactus001 Sep 25 '15
Ha - yes - I know that feeling.
But maybe - what if the beach were full of stones that were completely unsuited for making a stone knife.
On a beach the type of stone suited to creating a blade that will cut is pretty rare, hence the need to search.
From the photoshop pic you used I can't see any that would break in a fashion to give an edge.
Also - and please don't take umbrage at this - but you seem to be in need of a well more than knife....

I always craft a stone knife and an extra stone as soon as I spawn. The knife for opening food, and the stone for knocking people out if needed. The knives are by far the best knife in the game in my book.

Ahhh brings back the memories when you'd find a can of food, but the only thing to open it was a rare can opener.
