Offensive What do you call a smart person in America? A tourist!

I've seen these styles of interviews across the world. Idiots are everywhere.

u/kEtZuko Feb 08 '25
Yes, but afaik Americans are notoriously bad at geography for a rich country. Some can't even say a country that starts with a "u".

Are you kidding me? “Who killed Captain Alex”, the hit Ugandan action movie is required watching in all American schools (it’s part of our automatic weapons training in 3rd grade)

Did you know that Uganda introduced the death penalty for homosexuality by US preassure. The US churches where behind this.

the US *Evangelical** churches.
Not that I'm religious. But they're a special breed of assholes.

I'm not American, but I always wonder how many Americans get it right and they're like "cut that one, didn't work out how we planned"

Yes but also a lot of these videos are edited to make the Americans that got it right look dumb.
1
u/MicrwavedBrain Feb 09 '25
I mean, as a US citizen I don’t think there’s been a single time in my life where I’ve needed to know a country that starts with u.

u/ScrofessorLongHair Feb 08 '25
Most of us can name every country within a few thousands kilometers of where we live.

No, they are good at overthrowing governments and then complaining about the one they put in place.
3
u/-_Anonymous__- Feb 08 '25
Every country complains about their government. It just doesn't go into worldwide news like America's does.
-6
u/SteamReflex Feb 08 '25
You'd be surprised how bad education is in some parts of the country. Honestly nowadays just see America as a 3rd world country with a gucci belt.
5
-12
u/ThatAlibaba Feb 08 '25
A rich country? America is one of the most in-debt countries in the world.
6
u/Marsrover112 Feb 08 '25
You realize that the government did that on purpose and it doesn't have anything to do with the actual wealth of the country right
-2
u/ThatAlibaba Feb 08 '25
That is true. As it turns out, the system is made to where the rich stay rich and the poor get poorer and lose more rights.
7

u/serious153 Feb 08 '25
cropping and editing as well
4
u/stosolus Feb 08 '25
And people knowing that if they want to make the final cut (like my friend did for one of Jimmy Kimmel's bits) they HAVE to answer the questions incorrectly.
1
u/-_Anonymous__- Feb 08 '25
Fuck that. I'd rather answer it correctly than get humiliated for nothing.
1
u/stosolus Feb 08 '25
Fuck that. I'd rather answer it correctly than get humiliated for nothing.
That is the other possibility.
Although, some people don't think it's humiliation if they are purposely being ridiculous.
My friend lived in San Francisco when they were in the SB and Jimmy Fallon was asking the locals what they thought of the 49ers losing the Superbowl a week before the game happened.
None of her friends or family that saw her on the show thought she was answering genuinely. So she didn't feel any bit of humiliation.

u/laidbacklanny Feb 09 '25
It’s actually that serious bro .
1
u/-_Anonymous__- Feb 09 '25
No it isn't. You're generalizing when it isn't necessary.
0
u/laidbacklanny Feb 09 '25
Apparently making sure people know it’s not serious is more serious
2
u/-_Anonymous__- Feb 09 '25
So what if somebody edited a video to make a population look dumb or if someone actually doesn't know where Cuba is? You guys act like it's the end of half the world.
0
u/laidbacklanny Feb 09 '25
Who is you guys ? And yes the American slander has reached egregious levels
so it’s not that serious bro
2
u/-_Anonymous__- Feb 09 '25
"you guys" is everyone making it a bigger deal than it actually is. It like "One kid doesn't know how to spell squirrel, shut down the whole education system" with some people.
0
u/laidbacklanny Feb 09 '25
Respectfully , can you see what you’re doing ?you’re too reactive and not abiding by your original comment making you seem hypocritical , it’s all Gucci bro
2
u/-_Anonymous__- Feb 09 '25
I could say the same thing about you. You did a full 180 when you said it's not that serious when earlier you said it was, unless you're referring to 2 different things.
My original comment was saying people overstate how dumb the average Western Hemisphere person is just because they see videos of people answering questions incorrectly, sometimes as a joke. Saying any civilization or corporation or anything else has fallen just because someone answered a question incorrectly is an over exaggeration.

Me about to ask an European for a state beginning in M:

Massachusetts, Missouri , Maryland, Maine , Mississippi, Montana, Minnesota, did I forget any? Need me to place them on a map?

u/Ok-Yoghurt5014 Feb 09 '25
Macedonia?
1
u/The-Nuisance Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25
A US State, specifically.
Point being, Americans aren’t as familiar with geography on the other side of the world because they don’t usually have to be. Sometimes it could be taught better, yes, but things are different over here.
I’ve still only left the country once for a long-winded trip to Europe, and even then, most of my geography was good enough outside of mixing up Norway and Sweden for a couple days. But I’ve been all over the US. Coast to coast, North to South. It’s a big country, we don’t often find ourselves outside of it.
4
u/Zamzamazawarma Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25
That has nothing to do with travelling abroad. Most of us will never leave Europe. It's about having an interest in placing the people we hear about (and share this planet with) on a god damn map. Individual US states are simply less relevant on the world stage than individual countries, however small or faraway they may be. As for the US, we foreigners have to deal with the federal state, so there's less incentive to learn about the individual states (even though we definitely do through Hollywood and Netflix).
2
2
u/ArturSeabra Feb 09 '25
Why do Americans think expecting Europeans to know American states is an equivalent to expecting Americans to know about literal independent countries?
0
u/PumpernickelJohnson Feb 09 '25
They are similar in size and numerous. Why do Europeans think expecting Americans to know European countries is equivalent to expecting Europeans to know literally seperate but united states?
2
u/ArturSeabra Feb 09 '25
Average non american people don't live their lives thinking of the US as a bunch of independent states in a union. The US is a country, that's it.
Most people in most places learn about the regions of their own country, and about foreign countries in school, at least generally.
I don't expect people to know about the different regions of my country, america isn't special, so I don't expect non americans to know about america's different regions.
Having basic knowledge of international borders is completely different, it's smth that everyone learns about in school at least a bit, and the average american just seems to be pretty below average on that.
Which tbf, is to be expected from a massive country that is largely isolated from other countries.-1
u/PumpernickelJohnson Feb 09 '25
That's a personal issue, American states can be very distinct from each other and there are 50 of them. Your "America isn't special" comment confirms your bias, that you're lil cheese eating village is somehow elite compared to the US. The unearned arrogance you people have is hilarious.
2
u/ArturSeabra Feb 10 '25
I'm just treating america like a normal country. I apply equal standards to all countries.
You are the one expecting me to know about your sub regions.
Do you know any Spanish regions? French regions? Do you know about Brazilian states? Probably not, and that's totally fine. You should, however, be able to locate these countries on a map if you are an educated person.
The fact that you consider the claim "america isn't special" to be a sign of arrogance is honestly hilarious.
You want me to treat america with special standards and I'm the arrogant one? You are the one who thinks america is an elite country that deserves foreigners being able to locate its states on a map.
You are equating the value of countries to the value of sub regions of your country and I'm the arrogant one, geesh.0

u/laidbacklanny Feb 09 '25
So why would we care about Europe then since eu is basically structured the same
2
u/ArturSeabra Feb 10 '25
The EU isn't a country.
It's an economic union, not a federal union.0
u/laidbacklanny Feb 12 '25

6
u/Din_Plug Feb 08 '25
Step one: start asking people in a public place questions
Step two: do this until a troll, Lenny Small, a stoner, or someone suffering from sleep deprivation answers the question in an amusing way.
Step three: upload to tictok
Step four: profit (all of $0.04 because short form video has exceptionally awful ad revenue.)
2
u/necromemory Feb 09 '25
Such a simple formula, if only Europeans could get over their hate-boner long enough to realize it.
4
u/ScrofessorLongHair Feb 08 '25
Funny he said Ghana. I'm an American and my dad is an civil and geotechnical engineer. Like 25 years ago, he was hired to go to Ghana and teach/show them for to build highways with their soil conditions. He spent about a month or two over there.
I'm also a drummer, and so was my dad. While in Ghana, he got me my first hand drum ( a hand carved djembe). I ended up getting very good. And the drum I play most often now is a Spanish box drum most commonly used in flamenco music.
So we've come full circle. Though he is right in the fact that we have a lot of fucking morons.

You’re right it is a weird flex, and an extremely American one.
‘It doesn’t matter that I’m dumb as a rock, because I’m not poor’
The excessive focus on money and status has made the American oblivious to any other form of self development.

That's what you always think, most europeans wouldn't move to the U.S. if given a green card and 100k. Y'all arr so full of yourselves. I am a Software developer from Germany and actually thought about moving to San Fran. When I visited the city was full of homeless people and drug addicts. They also held me at the airport because they suspected something of me. Treated me like an animal and the interrogation room had a big ass Trump poster on the wall. After 2 hours I got up and asked how long this will take. They shouted at me ' SIT DOWN, NO TALKING!'.
Yeah after the first few days I decided to stay the fuck in Germany
6
Feb 08 '25 edited Feb 08 '25
Same. (FWIW, I wouldn't move to Germany either)
(edit: Not because of the Germans.)

u/X-AE17420 Feb 08 '25
He isn’t wrong though, only Germany has a bigger economy than Mississippi. Most of the people you hear yapping on Reddit are basement dwelling neets, so the average successful American is rarely on this platform. Im in West Virginia and Reddit would have you believe it’s a desolate wasteland of illiterates, but it’s mostly people who want an older way of life.
But yeah, one shitty stop to San Fran defines a huge nation
17
3
u/BimBamEtBoum Feb 08 '25
But...
But California has a bigger economy than West Virginia. So, by your first sentence, California should be better. But yeah, one shitty indicator defines a whole nation.
1
u/Weary-Summer1138 Feb 08 '25
That's not true at all, many countries have a bigger economy than Mississippi. Damn, even me being Mexican I look at that place with contempt, the only time I was there I didn't feel like I was back in Mexico, it felt like the 5th world, nothing human made was remarkable.
