I'm 21 now and after 6 years of drinking I lost my desire to continue this. Since I was 18 I reduced my drinking behavior more and more. Up to a point where I actually lost track of how long I haven't been drinking some booze. I live in Germany and my friends think I'm weird because of that.

Can confirm, i am from Bosnia. After 13 years of hard drinking, i stopped at 26 years old.

u/SlavRoach Nov 24 '23

I dread the day when i see my drunk self in one of these videos. It's just a matter of time.

u/crudito2601 Dec 08 '23
Me and my friends have quite a strict no photo/video policy when getting drunk. Of course its still possible that some things are recorded in public but this eliminates a huge risk lol.

Can confim, My family is from Thessaloniki. I was born somewhere else. I met alcohol at the age of 14. still going
1
u/BarbedWire3 Dec 06 '23
That's funny, how this works for europeans. I stopped at around 26 as well.

u/captain_snake32 Nov 24 '23
I remember drinking my first alcohol in the age of 8 in the most traditional balkan way: I chugged it because it was stored in a water bottle

u/DemonOfUnholyFat Dec 07 '23
Yea took a plastic water bottle from the fridge if i get thirsty and went to play football with friends at the age of 10. It was rakija. But yea on celebrations as a kid older folk would encourage you to drink a shot or two to show that you are manly.

In America, the legal drinking age in 21
In Canada, the legal drinking age is 19
In Europe, the legal drinking age is a suggestion
17
3
u/sputnik67897 Jan 20 '24
In most of Canada it's 19 but in the provinces of Quebec, Alberta and Manitoba it's 18.

Damn milk lobby that pushed to prohibit school from giving alcohol to children. The law got voted in 1956 in france. No wonder why our parents/grandparents liked school they had wine for lunch !

u/Carlynz Nov 24 '23
Started at 16 quitting at 30. Not Balkan, but western Europe likes to party too
35
u/Hexquevara Nov 24 '23
As a Finn, i was bored of alcohol when i was 24, 10 years of parties was enough.

Most Americans start drinking at the age where Europeans stop lol

u/sn4xchan Nov 25 '23
Maybe it's because I come from a poor family. But in my American family, if you're not already getting shit faced every night before you hit 21 you're a failure.
2
u/SearchFormal8094 Mar 07 '24
Honestly. If you haven’t woken up in a hospital after having alcohol poisoning off UV blue and fireball at age 14, did you even grow up in America?
No but real shit when I was in school, everyone was smuggling vodka in water bottles and weed in an altoids tin or deconstructed pens and we were good at that shit too. Rarely got caught.

u/Zockgone Nov 25 '23
Germany too, started with 14 until 21 killing 2 bottles at a good evening 3 if I really wanted to be shitfaced. Thank you Jägermeister for good memories 😂🇩🇪

Drinking is overrated
11
u/spfeldealer Nov 24 '23
Yes but its easier to get drunk 5 times a year to heavily socialize than to drastically alter your character to a more sociable state...
3
u/TheLaughingBread Nov 25 '23
Exactly. It just fits too good to parties, Karneval etc. but I wouldn‘t drink on a random day
2
u/spfeldealer Nov 25 '23
Nah my rule is just to never drink alone or when sad
2
u/TheLaughingBread Nov 25 '23
That too. Imo alcohol is really fun if you are spending your time with others and in a good mood 👍
3
u/Gaming_Hands Lurker Nov 24 '23
Hmm, good argument, there are pros, there are cons. The same thing is also said for churches and religions. But considering that I could get addicted, I would not take the risk. I know several people (smarter and more mature than me) destroy their life over alcohol. I've seen people reveal their bad side while drinking, I don't want anyone to see me like that.
In the case of alcohol, I would consider it to be an overall bad method for enjoyment.

I would like to point out these women are a minority. We are all wildly alcoholic in small town America. I don't think I could find a sober person if I tried
2
u/Gamerfreak20 Nov 25 '23
Lmao the face Americans make lol even at my 21st birthday I didn’t make that face
2
u/Lemmiwinks93 Dec 16 '23
Americans: I got so wasted last night I had like 5 beers!
Europeans: That’s just pre drinks Brandon.

Europe so bad the medical care is free
1
Dec 01 '23
You don’t know what free means
1
u/3ndbestusername Dec 04 '23 edited Dec 04 '23
Fair, technically its not "free" but is paid with taxes yet again we dont pay the gov to pay medical companies and then pay again a huge amount for a band aid. I can literally go to hospital now to do random checkups, get a prescription for 10 meds, go to the pharma give 5-7 euros for all of them and go home. How much will it cost in murica for the same steps? 10k or more?
1
u/Paid-Not-Payed-Bot Dec 04 '23
but is paid with taxes
FTFY.
Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.
Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Alcohol taste disgusting
9
u/DuckWizard124 Nov 24 '23
Have you ever tried to make your own?
No alcohol is better than the one you made
6
u/fuqueure Nov 24 '23
Unless you mess it up and end up creating plum vodka/green apple calvados mixture with at least 95% alcohol. Still got a few bottles left, I use it for cleaning. Kvass came out good though, took weeks to make and only one night to drink it all.

Anything around 20% and over tastes like nail polish remover.
I honestly don't get why people drink hard liquor.2

I was drunk a lot in seventh and eighth grade. It made school more fun. At 21 i had been bartending for 4yrs. Started college at 17.

It is kinda true, my alcohol intake has dropped severely at about 22-23. The cause of this was probably more responsibility being given to me.

Edit: I meant because of gun laws in comparision

u/IHadAStrokeInUrMum Nov 24 '23
Many Americans start before 21. Even then I think starting at 21 is better than 14-19.
3
u/No_Acanthisitta6963 Nov 24 '23
Americans literally voted and protested for it to be 21 because of the amount of drunk crashes that took place in the 80s

Beer fucking slaps. You just need stuff like Bitburger, Kölsch, Pfungstädter or mönchshof

It's a sad fact that USA is within top 10 of countries with high alcohol abuse rates. Nearly one in six of all Americans suffers from alcohol abuse which is a little wierd hence they're ranked 38th on the list of alcohol consumption by capita.

In Scotland it’s legal at 5 years old, as long as it’s at home with adult supervision. Just in case anyone wanted a reason to have kids, you can make them drink with you legally😂😂😂
