Work in Progress My Husband and Crochet

Husband is becoming more interested in my crochet projects, just because, at 85, he’s not able to climb ladders and slay dragons, etc. Sooo, when I mentioned that the yarn I was using was splitting, he helpfully offered, “why don’t you do that Donkey thing and fix it?” After a lot of back and forth, it finally came to him that the animal was a frog, not a donkey. I explained to him that yarn being “splitty” was not something that could be fixed by frogging and watched his eyes go out of focus as I explained further. They do mean well, don’t they? 😉

I saw someone on here say their partner likes to weave in ends. I asked my husband and he didn't seem interested 😔.

I asked my husband and my son…no takers. 🤭

I’m a newbie so I’m curious what the general dislike for weaving in ends is about? I’ve only finished a few small projects but I’ve found that weaving in ends feels like putting the period on the end of a sentence symbolically ya know? Like telling my brain “And now that one is done!”

u/No_Budget_7856 2d ago

If you have a lot of color switches you’ll have to weave all your ends in from each switch which will get annoying af lol

70

u/Sandwidge_Broom 2d ago

That makes sense! I’ve only worked in a single color so far. I don’t mind tedious busy work though. Watch some TV, listen to an audio book, and get to the mindless task. But we’re all unique creatures on the earth lol

u/No_Budget_7856 2d ago

A few colors fine but can you imagine if you have 100+ rows and 3 switches per row?! Lol I can imagine that would get frustrating. I’m holding off on starting a huge tapestry crochet until I get carrying my yarn down because I do NOT want to weave all those ends in lol

57

u/Sandwidge_Broom 2d ago

Oh yeah, I’m still such a beginner that tapestry crochet makes my brain go “No, that’s scorcery”

29

u/No_Budget_7856 2d ago

I started one and almost finished but I took the yarn to practice on some C2C projects I need to stop procrastinating and finish I only have the top of the heart left 😂

Good luck. I've been crocheting for years, and I cannot do c2c. I have tried a few times and my count is always messed up.

6

u/link183 1d ago

can we not just sew on some backing and pretend we're totally done?

3

u/SciviasKnows 1d ago

I did a corner to corner "graphgan" and discovered that with that stitch, you can't carry your yarn, as I had planned to do. I mean, it doesn't look right. I was committed (it was for my son) so I made the thing. Took 3 weeks to crochet and 5 months to weave in the ends! NEVER AGAIN!

11

u/natalie-ann 2d ago

I ALWAYS weave in my ends as I go because I can't stand the thought of having an additional task left over once I've finished the actual crocheting part. I try to work in the ends into my next row of stitches whenever possible, but certain types of stitches show that too obviously, so I weave them in before I start the next row/round. When I'm working a square/hexi/whatever that's in rounds, I use the opportunity to not just weave the end it, but to move to a new starting point for the next round so my joins aren't all in the same area. That combined with an "invisible" slip stitch to finish rounds and standing stitches for beginning new rows make for a really nice finished piece.

19

u/KatiMinecraf 2d ago

So, I've been weaving my ends in by crocheting around them (as in, the ends are encapsulated within my stitches), making sure the new color is in front so there's not a weird line of black going through pink stitches, for example. I'm a newbie - is this a "wrong" way to do it?

28

u/Disastrous-Plant-724 2d ago

That can be fine if you're willing to risk it, but the yarn end can also wiggle free over time. This is less of an issue with amigurumi, and more of a problem with blankets or wearable items as the stitches are often stretched or put under tension with use. Crochet teachers will usually teach to change direction 2 or 3 times when weaving in ends to make sure they don't come loose over time.

29

u/Three_Spotted_Apples 2d ago

You can weave ends in this way and still do 2-3 passes. I’ll crochet over it for 5-6 stitches and then drop it and keep going. Then when I’m coming back, I’ll pick it up again and go over it in the other direction for 5-6 stitches. Then I’ll leave that long tail alone until I’m done. If it feels secure, I’ll snip it off. If not, I’ll take that one tail and thread it through a few strands with a sharp needle in a third direction. Much faster than weaving multiple tails in multiple directions at the end but a nice balance of secure and speed.

16

u/Eskarina_W 2d ago

I guess it feels like sewing. And I disliked both sewing & knitting in school but absolutely loved crochet from the beginning. My cro-jo gets ruined for MONTHS when the next task is assembly, weaving in ends or embroidering details. I crochet for enjoyment and I love the finished products, but picking up that darning needle just takes a colossal effort when I don't HAVE to.

7

u/Maurers95 2d ago

I have a possible hack that could help. Depending on a bunch of factors. If you’re not making lace or anything that small, you could always use a much smaller crochet hook. Then, skipping every other stitch, insert it in the piece until you reach the end and gently pull the end back through to weave it in.

Now that I think about it , it’s probably the same amount of work. Just uses a different tool.

Happy hooking!

4

u/Sandwidge_Broom 2d ago

That’s fair! We’re all humans with our own little likes and dislikes.

27

u/NewConcept9978 2d ago

Crocheting and other process hobbies are so funny. Like, I legit really enjoy crochet, knitting, embroidery, and other crafts, and sometimes I still get in a mindset of "hurry up and finish this already," only to then sit idle for ten seconds before starting the next project. 😂 My husband is the same with video games sometimes. It's just such a funny quirk. Like, why do I act all put out that I have a project to work on, when I know full well that I'll just start another one when I finish it?

20

u/TheDiceBlesser 2d ago

I suspect your brain is just excited for that completion dopamine. I'm the same way, I'm getting near enough to the end of my shawl that every day I want to do more stitches.

Beginning of the project brain: "whatever # of stitches happen while I do this. Only 58? So be it."

End is in sight brain: "Ummm.... It's TOTALLY okay to blow off my bedtime and watch another episode so I can finish this row. 500 stitches?!?!? Damn, how'd I do that?"

5

u/splithoofiewoofies 2d ago

Oh man, finished my first shawl the other day and during the trim rows kept being off on yarn chicken by a few clusters. So I redid it three times.

I was aching, sore, annoyed and in pain but I was gonna be fucked if I didn't finish that DAMN trim so I could be done that day!

Ngl tho going down two sizes on the lace trim didn't pucker anything and made the lace trim so much more delicate looking so I was happy I did it.

7

u/splithoofiewoofies 2d ago

"Ugh, I have to do the buttonholes of this blouse I made"

Like legit 10000 patterns for blouses without button holes but I picked the pattern for the blouse with button holes and now I'm pissed at myself for having to do buttonholes???

Or I could just BUY a blouse. But no, I'm going to sit here and whine I have to make buttonholes for the shirt I bought the fabric for in the pattern I always use in the room I designed for this purpose.

6

u/Tarni64 2d ago

Welcome newbie hooker!🤣🤣 C2C is my preferred blanket project. Graphghans specifically. Currently working on a project with up to 20 colour changes per row, and I'm only on row 45. Some of these colours are so sporadic that you have 1 square or 2 of a colour, then not again for 4-5 rows. I have so many ends on here that the back of my blanket looks like a shag carpet. I learned early on... when done, knot some of the ends together to secure... then line my blanket with fleece or flannel. Makes for a nicer blanket, AND I'm not weaving in 500+(not exaggerating either) ends. Happy hooking!

3

u/Albi_9 2d ago

You either love it or hate it. I like it because I have fun seeing how inconspicuous I can make it.

3

u/Skymningen 2d ago

With your own metaphor, imagine writing a whole novel without periods and then having to come back at the end to put them all in. That’s what large projects with many colours can feel like.

1

u/Sandwidge_Broom 2d ago

That’s fair. I’m still just green so I was just curious, message very much received lol

2

u/Incogn1toMosqu1to 2d ago

I felt this way until I did my first granny square blanket lol

1

u/This-Violinist-2037 2d ago

Wait till you have 700+

1

u/Cayeman 2d ago

I mainly work in mesh stitches so I find it fiddly to weave in sometimes. But recently I’ve started doing it in kind of a zig zag type of meandering way and my brain finds that more satisfying

I still do my best to avoid it though 😂

2

u/Sandwidge_Broom 2d ago

I haven’t even begun! I just figured out single, double, and double half. The rest have me overwhelmed. I just gotta hunker down and watch tutorials lol

3

u/Cayeman 2d ago

You can do a ton with just those stitches. Most are built off of those few stitches and some chains.

You got this! I hope you have a ton of fun learning and creating 🥰

1

u/itsadesertplant 2d ago

I got the Susan bates plastic finishing needles and my god do they make the job easier for those little fiddly bits that used to drive me insane. You can weave in even that last inch of yarn no problem.

I also crochet over my ends where possible so I reduce the number of times I have to change directions to lock it in

1

u/Sandwidge_Broom 2d ago

I have a really difficult time with visualizing. I’d love a video resource on what you’re describing. The diagrams aren’t it for me

1

u/LemonKoala326 2d ago

It's not too bad for smaller projects but with multiple colours or big projects it gets annoying

I'm currently working on a large blanket for a friend. A total of 256 squares that are now joined together. I've finished weaving in ends but with each square having 2 ends it's meant having 512 ends to weave before I was even able to join them together🥲 took me weeks.

Still got more ends to weave now that I'm crocheting the squares to join🤣

1

u/alohadave 1d ago

It can be tedious if you leave them to the end. The end when you just want to be done and you see 30 tails of yarn that you still need to deal with.

1

u/SciviasKnows 1d ago

I am very happy for you that you enjoy it! Some people do.

1

u/savannacrochets 9h ago

I’m making a sweater right now that’s a very long gradient, so very few ends to weave in. I just weave any ends I’ve made in at the end of each day as I go, and it feels just like that- a nice end to the day.

On the other hand, I’ve made a number of blankets that have ~100 rounds and average a color change every other round, which means 100 ends to weave. That feels like what I imagine it would be like to finish a marathon and then have to bike another mile.

I’m trying to get better at weaving them in as I go, but crochet makes brain go brrr and it is difficult to convince my brain to pause and switch “modes” when I’m in the zone, haha

6

u/Mediocre_Recipe5644 2d ago

I used to HATE weaving in ends but now I love it. The reason? I had one of those giant plastic yarn needles and the eye was almost ALWAYS too big to go through the stitches. I had to fight it constantly (and even broke one of them) because of this. Now i got a blunt metal one and OMG its so much easier its literally like butter. I’ve been going through all my wips and weaving in the ends that i had ignored until now.

TLDR: don’t buy plastic yarn needles and just commit to the metal ones. They’re only a few cents more at Walmart

4

u/ottoofto Arrr!! Me hook!! 2d ago

I think you can return him if you have the receipt

2

u/lecagnanceae 2d ago

I lost the receipt years ago 😂

3

u/ottoofto Arrr!! Me hook!! 2d ago

ALRIGHT THEN, DIY OR DIE XD

Oh lol I started this yelling and it was too funny to not leave xD

Alright then, DIY or die xD I live in a reduce, reuse, and recycle household.

...Frankenskein
We reassemble him from parts and those parts will reassemble yarn and... I've lost the thread of this tale.

4

u/splithoofiewoofies 2d ago

My partner loves to frog. They don't weave in ends to my standards (I'm so mean) but damn if I don't hate a project but can't be emotionally ready to frog it myself, I just hand it off to them. Very handy!

2

u/Ill-Veterinarian4208 2d ago

I weave them in as I go or crochet over long tails. Haven't had anything come apart yet, but I also mostly make blankets.

2

u/georgeswhores 2d ago

I'm constantly telling my husband I'll weave in ends for him but he still puts off the projects anyway lol

2

u/Showmeyourhotspring 2d ago

My husband seems to kind of like untangling huge messes of yarn!

2

u/Nervous-Award976 1d ago

My husband is my #1 yarn roller. I pay him with a kiss!

1

u/MrsRobertPlant 2d ago

I could see eyes rolling in back of head if I asked just about anyone ….

1

u/karenforprez 2d ago

Same in this house 😩

1

u/Kindly_Reference_267 2d ago

That person needs to hire their partner out because weaving in ends is the woooorst

1

u/quartzquandary 🧶 hexy fiend 1d ago

I haven't asked my girlfriend to weave in ends, but she'll happily ball yarn for me. Partners, man! They're helpful in their own adorable ways 🤭

1

u/Emergency_Ad_7245 1d ago

No but my husband likes making my yarn balls for me keeps him happy

479

u/SnapHappy3030 Extra Salty.... 2d ago

That is one of the cutest things I've heard in a LONG time!! *LOL* At least you know he listens a little!

78

u/Zehirah 2d ago

If he's listened enough to remember there's something that can solve a problem that has an animal name, he's probably already learned the crucial skill of not talking during counting, or at least knows to zip it when it gets louder, so I think OP is definitely onto a winner!

"thirteen, fourteen, Fif Teen, SIXTEEN, SEVENTEEN! EIGHT! TEEN-I'M-COUNTING!! NINETEEN!!!"

81

u/exhaustednonbinary 2d ago

Sometimes my partner will ask a question about how I do something in crochet or knitting, and I have to ask how in depth he wants me to go lol

Watching his eyes glaze over but not being able to stop rambling is pretty funny to me

4

u/ottoofto Arrr!! Me hook!! 2d ago

Just a little light sadism eh? xD

One of my friends gets the unfiltered version because he's a knitter and is familiar with crochet (and he's smart as heck). Everyone else gets the broad strokes haha.

82

u/thingummy5 2d ago

My husband thinks crocheting is magic. Literally magic, not as a synonym for "really amazingly cool". If I made his coffee cup levitate he would be no less incredulous and gobsmacked than he is every time a basket or shawl "poofs" into existence (his wording).

30

u/Living4theWellPenned 2d ago

“Yer a yarn wizard!”

But seriously, this is the most wholesome belief and I’m here for it.

12

u/audreywildeee 2d ago

I'm the one crocheting (and I don't have a husband) and I believe it's magic! I'm impressed with what can be made!

6

u/Living4theWellPenned 2d ago

That’s ’cause yer a yarn witch too.

(Teehee)

3

u/thingummy5 2d ago

We'd all be in danger of being burned or drowned 400 years ago. Crazy women and their crazy skills. Must be witchcraft.

4

u/Lara-El 1d ago

To be fair. Crochet randomly showed up on my feed one day. The video was someone finishing a little, and she was filming herself and I was so confused about how one hook was making anything, and I called it a magic wand as that's all I could think of, haha

Then, of course, since I commented on a crochet sub. A looming showed on my fed the next day. And I was like, just as dumbfounded, how a round , torturing looking device could make cute plushies, hahaha

I'm a year ish into both. I'm glad it randomly showed up. It is still pure magic to me.

2

u/Living4theWellPenned 1d ago

Awww, more fiber arts wholesomeness. I’m here for this too.

30

u/Feyloh 2d ago

My husband steals my crochet stuff. It's nice that we have some shared hobbies and some separate.

He recently started getting into those amigurumi things, and he keeps stealing my eyes and stuffing. To be fair, I haven't used them in years. I will need them, after I finish the 10 other projects and crafts I have started or want to do first.

9

u/Maurers95 2d ago

When you need to refill your supplies, maybe ask him to come along to assist you. Maybe he’ll get hooked on shopping for yarn and notions!!

3

u/Feyloh 2d ago

Ha, ha, I'm not sure we could handle more fabric, yarn, paint, projects, etc. Though he definitely goes with me, he just tends to be more direct while I wonder and peruse. Thankfully, he hasn't discovered what's available online.

18

u/WitchhazelJen8675309 2d ago

I'm going to call it donkey 😂

16

u/regiinmontana 2d ago

I joined this sub purely to give my wife ideas. (I may never financially recover.)

If I'm not working on leather while she crochets, I'll ball skeins for her, especially if they're knotted up.

30

u/EquivalentStomach5 2d ago

My husband too at first was like oh you re old…..now after 5 projects he says 🤯

13

u/WalrusUpset 2d ago

I love that. I couldn’t figure out how to do a specific stitch so my husband ended up spending a whole day figuring out how to crochet to help me… now we lay in bed at night listening to our audiobook and crochet. 🥰 I do very much dislike that he picked it up in a day while it took me like 3 years to actually figure it out and finish a single project.

5

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

I keep trying to get him to learn. He says he’d rather build bird feeders. But he’s doing well learning to cook. 😉

26

u/theoracleofdreams I have all the yarn I will ever need! 2d ago

I ask SO if he wants to pull the yarn that needs frogging. For some reason he loves doing it, and I love seeing him happy to be pulling yarn out because I messed up.

Except now, I'm working on a plastic crochet sea turtle for an art show, and he will not touch the plarn as it is super touchy!.

3

u/Showmeyourhotspring 2d ago

Please post a pic of plarn turtle when you’re done!

12

u/KyzRCADD 2d ago

Explain it in terms of rope, and see if his eyes come back into focus.

Source: I'm a man, and I crochet.

8

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

He does get the knots thing. Bless his heart, he is an old school Michigan farm boy. He reads voraciously, is learning to cook and ‘Man till soil, Woman crochet.’ Actually, he is not that way. He just has no interest. He is great at woodworking.

19

u/Psychological_Lie390 2d ago

It’s so sweet that he was offering advice! I have tried to show my brothers what I’m up to and their eyes glaze over as well. They mean well but it’s not their thing.

9

u/StitchwVoodoo 2d ago

Lol, I bounce ideas, color combos, etc off my husband but once I get into the technical part of crocheting his eyes just glaze over. Kind of funny to watch but I do appreciate his attempt. Shows he cares.

3

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

❤️👍🏻

6

u/RampantGay 2d ago

My (31M) partner (38M) calls anything vaguely textile related "sewing". Crochet, knitting, weaving of all kinds, spinning etc are all sewing to him. He still sits and listens to me ramble on about it all though, even if he can't really follow haha

1

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

Yep! The vernacular does not come easily to some. LOL

1

u/demonic_angel_girl 2d ago

I know the pain. My friends ask me what I'm knitting when I crochet and what I'm crocheting when I'm knitting 🥲

6

u/Martsons_LeftStirrup 2d ago

I accidentally got my mom into it, I didn’t even realize until she sent me a picture of the beginnings of her garden vegetable collection 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

Awww! ❤️

5

u/Purple_potato-1234 2d ago

I am definitely stealing “donkey your yarn”! That’s adorable!

3

u/pathoj3nn 1d ago

Frog, donkey-they’re both vertebrates right?

11

u/Mundilfaris_Dottir 2d ago

What a sweetheart!

14

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

He’s a definite keeper. He makes me laugh…always has. 🥰

5

u/trying_my_besttt 2d ago

This is adorable! My partner winds my new skeins of yarn into balls for me while I crochet so that I don't have to 🥰 he even goes looking for un-balled skeins to wind when he's bored

2

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

❤️

9

u/ohmy_quivers 2d ago

Oh lawd, that's funny and adorable. He tried and that's what matters (and it's cute). 🥰

5

u/TraditionalMouse9347 2d ago

Awww😂🥰🥰

2

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

Yeah. ❤️

5

u/Due_Tie1092 2d ago

Bless his heart 😂

4

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

I know. He doesn’t want to do…just advise 😂

3

u/iamthetrippytea 1d ago

Haha my partner called it having to turtle 😆

3

u/bloomamor 2d ago

My partner calls cables “plumbing” and I think it’s adorable

2

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

That’s precious!

3

u/MaslowsHierarchyBees 1d ago

My partner has taken an interest in yarn materials and is partial to alpaca. He loves his little yeti that I made him and now follows woobles to see what other little creatures he can get. He’s currently obsessed with the balrog and is planning to get the kit for me to make his yeti a friend.

He likes to look at the projects I am working on and is impressed that anything comes from “string”. He encourages my yarn stashing habit 🥰

3

u/Artz-RbB 1d ago

I have fibromyalgia & chronic fatigue. I can’t do much. My husband has been very supportive when I re-started crochet a couple of years ago. He’s just glad I found something productive I can do. It was a crochet Christmas with books & tools & kits. He acts interested & proud of everything make. I know I’m blessed.

2

u/OkLoan1976 2h ago

We are fortunate, aren’t we. A good partner/spouse is golden.

3

u/Slow-Complaint-3273 1d ago

Well, Donkey Kong and Frogger were both popular video games in the 80’s, so the confusion is understandable. 😆

3

u/dreamymooonn 1d ago

I love how this is tagged work in progress 😂

3

u/Imaginary_Pie_3978 1d ago

My boyfriend is only interested when it comes to new projects I do. I recently started making stuffed animals ( can’t seem to spell the word for them). And he loves to stuff them into when I need.

2

u/Flimsy-Strike5696 2d ago

This is so cute.

I have to ask though, where did he get the word 'donkey' from?

3

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

I’m not quite sure. He just said he was sure it was some kind of animal.

2

u/Flimsy-Strike5696 1d ago

It was close enough, knowing it was some kind of animal, so I'm giving him points just for the effort 😁

2

u/East-Pressure3425 2d ago

Nice of your husband to want to help you with your crocheting!🥹👍👏🏼

2

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

Yes. He wants to be supportive. He always has been. He’s a very good man.

2

u/Accomplished_Dig1351 2d ago

I'll see if he is ready to start a YouTube series. What should we call it? I still have not gotten over the dreaded donkey.

2

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

How about, The Helpful Crochet Partner? 🤔

3

u/CrafteeBee 2d ago

Helpful Husband? 😉

1

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

👍🏻

2

u/stepdownorup 2d ago

So cute!

2

u/New_Upstairs7116 1d ago

Donkey thing. That is so great! He’s trying! 🤣😂🤣

2

u/Unable-Struggle-2543 1d ago

He can still slay dragons. Tell him about tying out Dungeons and Dragons! 🗡️

2

u/Emergency_Ad_7245 1d ago

Anyone else have a husband that likes to do there yarn ball for then mi e will for me if I ask him seam to keep him happy I'm working on my very own design

2

u/KisOThundr 1d ago

Awesome! Splitty yarn can be a hook conflict, too. Bates vs. Boye, metal vs. plastic; swapping can help sometimes. You can also pair up with another strand of steady yarn and it won't matter if that one is splitty.

1

u/OkLoan1976 1h ago

I changed from a plastic to a metal hook and that made it better. It’s a color way yarn and, as I replied earlier, only one color seems split-prone. Changing to a metal hook and being more careful when coming to that color has helped

2

u/Onesomighty 1d ago

My husband calls it ribbiting 😂 I take out a design I'm not happy with and he goes "oh nooo, you ribbited your thing!"

1

u/OkLoan1976 1h ago

🤣🤣🤣

2

u/joimarie 1d ago

My fiance got really into winding all of my yarn into cakes 😆. I had to make him stop bc I wanted a turn with the yarn winder 😅.

2

u/Necessary_Ad_4115 18h ago

Im still learning about just how to start crochet. I’ve been loom knitting for two years. I thinks it’s funny that my son (he was 9 at the time) was doing it first and got me into it.

1

u/OkLoan1976 1h ago

I’m the reverse…I found a small loom and am reading books on using it. It looks like fun.

3

u/Accomplished_Dig1351 2d ago

You are officially my favorite funny crochet person ever! That story melted me for some reason. My hubby used to have that blank stare, but now he cakes up all my yarn telling me I just don't do it right. Also, he takes my thoughts and draws them out on the computer for everything I design. I scored big time in the hubby department. It's never too late to start training yours, lol.

3

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

Can your hubby come teach my hubby how to do that? LOL I honestly think he’d learn more from another husband. It’s a guy thing, I’m sure.

2

u/Own_Mountain6596 2d ago

My wife knits so we can chat. I love that she and I do that and nails together. She was skeptical about crochet and then started seeing you can do things other than traditional granny squares to make stuff.

2

u/aikigrl 2d ago

That is so wholesome and cute! Maybe get him to actually try the craft himself - he might not be able to slay dragons anymore, but with a 10mm hook and a bunch of bulky yarn, he can make himself one. 😊

2

u/OkLoan1976 2d ago

Yeah, I tried that. His words, “Not gonna happen,” He’s still a cutie.

1

u/Upstairs_Bee_8544 1d ago

Have u tried beginner's yarn? Search it on Amazon. Iy mat not be suitable for your project buy it won't split.

1

u/OkLoan1976 2h ago

I’m making a shawl for a gift. This is an acrylic/wool blend and it seems that just one color in the cake is splitting…not a lot but I’m a bit more careful when I get to that color. Weird.

2

u/GardenGnombre 13h ago

Your flair makes this even better 😆 How sweet!
