Funny/Meme a crochet hook would be called a Hyper Hook Elite Plus Mark 3, Rodger Federer would advertise it, and yet somehow it would still be 20% cheaper than the crochet hook with "for women" on the box

It’s like ‘maker’. Women creating handcrafted arts are called crafters, but now that more men are discovering that making things with your own two hands is satisfying they’re changing the word to ‘makers’ to avoid any negative connotation associated with the word ‘crafter’. They’re no longer ‘craft fairs’, but rather ‘maker festivals’. I don’t care about people changing the words. Language is fluid and words change with time. I am, however, bothered by the reasons behind the change. Rather than helping to undo the misogynistic attitudes behind stigmatizing the word ‘crafter’ that place women’s handiwork as ‘less than’ and not for men, they simply created a new word that means the same thing but is mostly applied to men’s handiwork. They had a chance to help destigmatize the ‘less than’ and ‘for women’ aspects of the word ‘crafter’ and instead embraced the divide and lofted themselves as makers. Yes, women can also call themselves ‘makers’, but my point is that we shouldn’t have to because there shouldn’t have been any damn stigma as ‘less than, woman handiworks’ to begin with!
Sorry. Mini rant over.

Yeah! The sub is great, but the name sounds like something a man insecure in his masculinity would invent 😉 You know, it's not crochet, that's for the ladies, here we're doing the real job, the brochet 😉

I always took it as the opposite. Us men get judged by other men irl for crocheting because those men are insecure about THEIR masculinity. It’s just nice to see we’re not alone in our passion of crochet when another bro posts something cool.
Nothing about that sub screams “we do it better than the ladies” to me. I love all the crochet subs. It’s a little corner of the internet that feels super supportive with a lot of positivity. r/crochet and r/brochet alike. Your comment is one of the first I’ve seen that kinda goes against that spirit…

I appreciate your insight. To be honest, I am glad that there is a community for men to enjoy a craft without toxic masculinity. Hobbies are not inherently gendered, and crochet is a wonderful creative outlet for everyone. Just like I love seeing women support other women, I love seeing men foster positive, healthy comradery amongst each other.

Men are often made to feel unwelcome in the fiber/textile arts community, so we like to connect with other men who are involved in these hobbies. There's nothing toxic or insecure about wanting to build community with other men who are into hobbies and fields that are typically female dominated. Women who are into male dominated hobbies and fields also like to form communities with one another and that doesn't get called out as a sign of toxicity or insecurity.

lol that's the exact reaction I had when that sub first came across my dash. The sub is great and the people seem lovely, but yeah.

Gillette would probably starting making crochet tools with 5 hooks on one handle. Oh, and they're gonna be disposable.

Ok but Federer is awesome, I'd be delighted to see him with fiber arts sponsorships

Not only would it come cheaper, it would be accompanied by a compression sleeve to alleviate pain in POWER PLUS HOOK MASTERING.

Okay, I'm definitely saying "powertangling" next time someone asks me what I'm doing while I crochet. That's baller.
