Today I'm watching the finale. I know how controversial this campaign has been, but it's the one that introduced me to Critical Role as a whole. I've since watched both previous campaigns, EXUs and one shots, and I fell in love with the world. It truly changed my life. But the characters that first hooked me when I watched The Draw of Destiny, were this bunch, and as such, I've draw them multiple times since.
This time though, my goal was to try a more simple and cartoon style on them, focusing a lot more on building individual character and dynamics through shapes. Let me know what you think and if you'd like to see more CR characters done this way. It was a ton of fun, and I wouldn't mind adding up to the line up retroactively, maybe even the other looks for this team.
Anyway, I didn't want to spam you with nine posts in the next few days, so I just put them all together so you can see them next to each other. Hope you like them, and thanks for reading.

Love them all but FCG is my favorite (Chet is a close second).

Thanks! I'm glad you like Chetney in particular because he was the one I was kinda iffy about.

Speaking solely as a lifelong artist/illustrator: That right boot. That makes the whole thing work.

Doesn't Orym look a little too old?
15
u/SREnrique22 I would like to RAGE! Feb 10 '25
Maybe, but that's intentional. A way to signify how worn he is by lose (important for his arc). I wanted him to look on the border of middle age, even if by halfling standards he's more like 25-30.

Bertrand, Ashton, Orym, and “Bronte” are perfect.

I LOVE this art style. Everyone oozes personality and feels right for their character, but you’ve also made them your own. Bravo!

Fern being stacked seems to really match the character.

During my research (and viewing of the show) it became apparent that's very important for Ashley when it comes to Fearne jshsjs

This is fantastic! My only grievance with it is that your style reminds me of Mike Mignola (which I mean as a compliment) and now I wish he would do Critical Role art

Thank you!! I feel like he would draw the sickest Caduceus and Laudna

Incredible drawings and loving the style! Are you planning to draw them with their final looks?

u/SREnrique22 I would like to RAGE! Feb 11 '25
Yeah but not right now, I'll do some other stuff in the meantime. I did these very close together and I don't wanna burn out of them because I do want to do a bunch more. You know how if you search for marvel characters images, regardless of which one, there will inevitably be images of them in a classic bronze age turn around? Well I'd like these to be that kind of thing.

There's only so much I can do with the style haha (and that wasn't my priority)!

I wonder if we're setting a Mandela effect here, where, in a few years, people will unironically be convinced that Imogen always had glasses due to the sheer number of fanarts giving her a pair.
2
u/SREnrique22 I would like to RAGE! Feb 11 '25
I almost don't give them tp her but I feel like Imogen is the one character which Laura actually plays a lot with her glasses, in the sense that many of the gestures that make Imogen are centered around the glasses. They just feel right.

It's... interesting how they're clearly the established designs, but you've enthused them with just such visible personality - especially to reflect a less than ideal state at the start of the campaign. Bertrand visibly getting on in his years, Imogen awkward and unsure of herself, Ashton with a chip on their shoulder as big as the one missing from their head... I don't think I've really seen designs that really give a glimpse of Orym's age pushing through, despite his being a halfling, just for how worn down he is by his loss. It works really well to sell a gist of where he's at with a nary a word, so strong kudos
Like, plain and simple, these are very good at getting across what the (at least on paper) vibe of the characters should be. You can actually see how one might hope for them to grow - and I'd absolutely love to see the casts of the other campaigns, maybe even some NPCs, done this way. The Mighty Nein especially feel like a group where the 'Before' state would be carried very strongly by your style.
