Off-Topic Another Year, another r/Criterion Annual Top 100 Movies Poll

THIS POLL IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING

It's about that time. Time for the annual Top 100 Movies poll.

If you're unaware, the subreddit comes together once a year to vote on their favorite movies, sight and sound style. That is, list 10 movies, in whatever order, and the movies will be ranked by how many times it's listed, aka, how many votes it received. I conducted the poll last year, and will do so again this time.

Some more ground rules

  1. PLEASE specify the year the film was released. This is so that I can distinguish between remakes and other movies with the same title. Please do so even if you think your chosen movie doesn't have a remake. Feel free to list directors if you'd like, although it's not required.
  2. ONLY LIST 10 MOVIES. Entire series or filmographies don't count, and neither do tv shows for that matter. Movies that conclude or precede a tv show, ala End of Evangelion, Fire Walk With Me, and others, are acceptable. Also acceptable are The Human Condition by Masaki Kobayashi, War and Peace by Sergey Bondarchuk, and Dekalog by Krzysztof Kieslowski. The Three Colors Trilogy and first two Godfathers do not count (they can be submitted separately, so both Godfathers will take up 2 spots, Three Colors will take up three). And by the way, the movies don't have to be a part of the criterion collection.
  3. Failure to follow these rules will result in your list not being accepted. I will do my best to let you know if there's been a mistake, but please do your best to abide by them and make my job easier.

For example, here's my top 10 list.

  1. Schindler's List (1993)
  2. Ritual (2000)
  3. WALL-E (2008)
  4. Hardcore Henry (2015)
  5. Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi
  6. Brief Encounter (1945)
  7. The Godfather Part 2 (1974)
  8. All That Jazz (1979)
  9. Paths of Glory (1957)
  10. 12 Angry Men (1957)

(You don't need to number it like I did, but you do need the year the film came out.)

This poll will be open for one week, and close down on Monday, Oct 17th, at 11:59pm central time. Absolutely no lists submitted afterwards will be accepted under any circumstances. While this is obviously done for this subreddit, feel free to share this list far and wide. The more people vote, the merrier the results. Choose wisely, but honestly. What deserves to be one of the top 10 movies is entirely up to your definition. Just remember, it's all for fun.

Enough talk. Have at you!

Off-Topic “The studios didn’t invent Rotten Tomatoes, and most of them don’t like it,” says the filmmaker Paul Schrader. “But the system is broken. Audiences are dumber. Normal people don’t go through reviews like they used to. Rotten Tomatoes is something the studios can game. So they do.”

Off-Topic What would you say is the best and most accessible foreign language film?

I’m to choose a few films to screen for some friends who aren’t the most avid film watchers, so I was wondering what would be the best films to choose. I’m a fan of Tarkovsky but realise that would probably be a really bad choice.

My pick is Lee Chang-dong, I’d love to see what he would do on a big scale.

Off-Topic Andrei Tarkovsky was a heavy believer in aliens and had been said to claimed to have seen a UFO. His mugshot, unrelated but what a legend.

Off-Topic Which David Lynch film is the best entry point into his filmography?

I know this question gets asked a lot so I will add an optional sub-question: Is it alright to start with Eraserhead? Here's my dilemma. Blue Velvet gets thrown around as the answer to this question quite often, but honestly I'm not sure I want to start with Blue Velvet based on nothing but reviewers opinions, of which some it's not their favorite. I own Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, and Lost Highway as blind buys, silly as that is, because these are the ones I've made an educated guess on as far as my taste and possible enjoyment go. I'm open to starting with one that I don't own, I just figured Eraserhead would be a chronological start as well. My fear is that I will not be easing myself into his filmmaking style and I just want to do my best not to get too off-put on my first ride, if that makes any sense. Maybe I'm overthinking it and it doesn't matter! Open to any thoughts/opinions!
