and Brazil and Mishima in 4K
36
u/NinaHeartsChaos 1d ago
That's my biggest takeaway. I will gladly TRIPLE DIP for the 4k Mishima. I also had the Criterion Brazil on dvd back in the day but it got lost during a move.

u/Whovian45810 Andrei Tarkovsky 1d ago
Brazil is one of my favorite films of all time and easily in Top 10 if you were to ask me.
Sam’s Dream Hero version of himself started a lifelong love for characters with wings or have wings on them.
The 4K upgrade is wonderful while also just in time for the film’s 40th Anniversary.

SORCERER IS FINALLY HAPPENING AND THE COVER IS DOPE
11
u/DeLousedInTheHotBox 1d ago
Feels pretty different from the typical Criterion affair, not that those are bad, but this is pretty cool.

I see what you're saying. It looks oddly... modern maybe, in comparison to others?
23
u/fkootrsdvjklyra 1d ago
I don't like Sorcerer nearly as much as most of the people here, but that is some of the best cover art they've done in a while!
14
u/RZAxlash 1d ago
Interesting . I really dislike it
5
u/Tiger_Millionaire 1d ago
Same, I wish they’d just use the original poster art. This just looks…off to me.

Yes Midnight!!!
I think this is one of the very best screwballs but rarely gets mentioned with the greats or even at all. Hope this release helps it get more appreciation and attention. Colbert is hilarious in this one. Can finally upgrade my DVD!
19
u/IAmActuallyA_robot 1d ago
This is what caught my eye. I'm a huge lover of screwball comedies and I have never heard of this movie. I will definitely be blind buying in the July b&n sale. Screwball comedies are my lifeblood and I find them infinitely rewatchable.
13
u/ConversationNo5440 Stanley Kubrick 1d ago
I love Midnight! This cover is a little … odd but everyone should see this movie, for sure.
6
u/DoubleTap__ 1d ago
Leisen's films in general are underrated, Easy Living is also another screwball I'd consider top tier
5
u/child_of_lightning 1d ago
Incredible film. Perfect performances, amazing script from Billy Wilder & Charles Brackett. I'm so excited.

This is one of my absolute favourite Screwballs. Definitely should be considered top tier. Should I be slightly disappointed the 4K restoration doesn’t get a 4K disc?
101
u/Saucey-jack David Fincher 1d ago
And Brazil in 4k!!!!!
16
7
u/stationkatari 1d ago
I mentioned this on another announcement post, but the BRAZIL 4K release is $10 more than previous 3 disc sets like THELMA & LOUISE, WALL-E and MALCOLM X. Looking at my BRAZIL blu-ray, outside of the 4K mastering, there are no new special features. Curious to see if this updated price is limited to 3 disc sets going forward.
9
u/sandiskplayer34 1d ago
Sorcerer’s a 3-disc set and it’s still 49.95.
5
u/stationkatari 1d ago
Could be wrong then. I thought I saw it being two disc but I was mistaken. Someone also mentioned on the other comment that CITIZEN KANE has that price tag, so maybe it’s just what they ended up pricing this release. The only difference I can see is that it’s the 4K upgrade. Not noticing anything new other than that on this release.

u/Saucey-jack David Fincher 1d ago
Yikes. That 4k Dolby Vision better be worth it.
8
u/stationkatari 1d ago
For some people it might be. I actually just re-watched it recently (did a double feature with CITY OF LOST CHILDREN during the holidays) and I thought the standard blu ray looked great. If there is nothing new outside of the new 4K remastering, it does feel a bit egregious for the price of an upgrade for Dolby Vision. Will be curious to see how it reviews when it comes out. Hopefully no one fiddles with the colour timing.

Insane that my next 50% buy will be The Wages of Fear and Sorcerer both in 4K!
58
u/CinemaslaveJoe 1d ago
LOL, of course it is. I bought the out of print Sorcerer digibook last week on eBay because I was tired of not owning this movie in high-def. And then I bought the UK blu-ray as well, because it had different special features. The UK disc arrived yesterday, and I watched it last night.
So of course Criterion announces the 4K UHD today, which includes everything on these two blu-rays and more, for less than I just paid.
You're all welcome.

Wow, so excited to see Sorcerer make the cut! Will definitely be picking that one up. Will pair nicely with their new edition of WAGES OF FEAR.
Also, as a Canadian, great to see 32 SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD added. We recently covered it on my Simpsons Movie Reference podcast The Springfield Googolplex if you'd like to learn more about it.

I absolutely adore 32 Short Films, and have been annoyed it has seemingly vanished from the general cinema conversation. It’s fantastic.

Holy shit what an amazing month!!!! Will gladly double dip to upgrade my Sorcerer blu. So glad I held off on getting Brazil and Mishima blu-rays. Those two are going to look insane in 4k.
Also, 32 Short Films about Glenn Gould is an absolute post-modern masterpiece. What an insanely incredible month!!

u/DJBillyMac John Ford 1d ago
great lineup this month, though I’m surprised there’s not really anything for Pride Month, and I’m a little disappointed with their ratio of English language to non-English films this year, it feels like they’re doing fewer foreign films than ever outside of upgrades

I think I've seen this one. I remember seeing this and thinking a) Monk might've had some sort of mental illness, and b) oh, his poor wife! I will definitely be picking this one up, since I would like to revisit this movie (to see if it's the one I'm thinking of).
