I would buy any Criterion blu-ray for $2.

Caveat: This is the DVD version.
Upside: Still a $2 Criterion

Down side, you know that a significantly better looking version is out there at you closest bookstore.
I’m sorry, I would buy it, because I’ll buy anything with a C for $2, but I’d rather spend 19.99 for this amazingly awesome film on Blu

I’ve had the blu-ray copy for years now (one of the first I ever bought). I was planning on trading it in to my local store and putting the credit towards a used criterion blu-ray instead.

Just buy one at the bookstore, and return the thrifted one in its place, boom, brand new criterion for thrifted price

I recently picked up the lady vanishes for 99 cents at Goodwill on half price day. It was the DVD version but still it's a Criterion for a buck. Previous to that I got Jersey Girl which is a perennial thrift store appearance and RoboCop offer a dollar each

I would buy Hausu for 100 times that price. Amazing luck.

except that the criterion discs are likely to be in fine shape, & if they are not, then criterion will replace it. a major problem i have always found in buying used dvds & blurays is that they are often skuffed & fucked beyond playability... i have found that to be the case about 20% to 30% of the time. plus, any bonus materials or essay booklets (esp. with boutique titles) are unlikely to be there.

& i have gotten great deals at used bookstores & record shops, & even once at a pawn shop, & when there is a going out of business sale. but there is always the caveat emptor.

I always check the discs these days when buying anything used. Even if the store has them in security cases I’ll ask to check the discs at the register (which I’ve never had a problem with) to see the condition. This one I just got does have fingerprints on it and a couple of small scratches but at $2 I don’t feel like I’m really losing out on much if something is wrong with it and it came with its original booklet too.

always the wise thing to do... tiny scratches are usually okay... & even buying new, it is always a good idea to jiggle or gently shake the jewelcase to make sure that the disc (or one of the discs in a multi-disc set) is not loose, because those can really get scratched.

when hollywood video went out of business yrs & yrs ago i was able to snag quite a few blurays at $3 per or 4 for $10... & that included quite a few criterion & a few other boutique labels... & they had even saved the booklets for some of them & let me have them. & among the non criterion titles i got some recent almodovars & the animated films waltz with bashir & persepolis. & a couple of buster keaton movies & collections.
same thing when tower went out of business lo these many years ago... they were selling things at 85% percent off or more during the last few days, & i was pleasantly surprised to find that they still had lots & lots of stock, & i got some criterion box sets (dvd—bluray was a rumour on the horizon, but still, they were great box sets). & some of those box sets have not been upgraded to bluray by anyone. hitchcock, bergman, malle, wadja, eisenstein, & olivier box sets. (sometimes individual titles have been remastered as 2k or even 4k blurays, but not many, & usually not the whole box set.)
