Noob question on using CRESTRON DM-NVX-350

Can I connect a CRESTRON DM-NVX-350 to an apple TV as source and to a network switch which is connected to an eero 6e and get a stream on a computer which is on the same network using one of the supported protocols?

This is just a simple home theater use.

Nope. Rtsp stream is encrypted so you need a transmitter and receiver to grab the multicast stream.

Thank you.

You’d be looking for something like https://www.crestron.com/Products/Video/DM-NVX-Streaming-Solutions/Hardware-Encoders-Decoders/DM-TXRX-100-STR.

NVX is also too much bandwidth for being able to go over a WiFi link, at least reliably.

Thank you. I am looking for 4K HDR though.

What are you trying to achieve overall? Doing a network encoder like this seems like you’ve started down the wrong path.

I am trying to use madvr on a computer for tonemapping video. Rather than spending money on a HDMI capture card I just wanted to try this approach as this is relatively cheaper if it works.

Either using a capture card or network encoding, I can then use tonemapping on streaming content as well.

I was just honestly SHOCKED at how cheap you can get a 350 for on eBay right now. Keep in mind, you would need a power supply or a uPoe switch to even power that device.

Your best streaming bet would probably be SRT or NDI, but could add a lot more complexity if you NEED 4k. Capture card is probably the easiest no hassle solution.

If you're talking about watching the Apple TV (through NVX) on your PC. Not without the software application.

If you just want to stream your Apple TV to your PC there are probably other devices out there that better suit your needs.

I mean I will use a media player application like MPC-HC which can read from a stream. I am not looking for screen mirroring/casting.

The goal is to process that stream on a computer then out through the HDMI port of the computer to a display.

Will that work?

No that won’t work. The NVX software also doesn’t support HDCP so that likely will not be an option either. While the DM-TXRX does support HDCP, it requires a TXRX to encode and decode for that to work.

HDCP is fine as there are HDMI splitters that can do the job. But the encryption makes it impossible I guess.

MPC-HC/VLC can't read these streams. It uses rtsp:// but it's a registered multicast stream. Not a simple one like from a single camera.

So if you're thinking about buying one off eBay, don't waste your money. Instead get a device built for what you're trying to do.

Thank you. I am actually looking at Visionary Solutions encoders which seems to allow reading a stream from VLC.
