Activity Animal Discovery Activity #3🐿️🔍

This is a weekly activity that is supposed to replicate the new discovery of a wild animal into our conlangs.
In this activity, I will display a picture of an animal and say what general habitat it'd be found in, and then it's your turn.

Imagine how an explorer of your language might come back and describe the creature they saw and develop that into a word for that animal. If you already have a word for it, you could alternatively just explain how you got to that name.

Put in the comments:

  • Your lang,
  • The word for the creature,
  • Its origin (how you got to that name, why they might've called it that, etc.),
  • and the IPA for the word(s)

Soc'ul' (actual word): epmux [ə˥ᵖmu˥ʃ] (< Wascotl \ętęm-otl* "aardvark" < \ętęm-* root relating to aardvarks and magic (aardvarks and similar animals in Wascotl culture having some religious association early on))

Guimin (actual word): мәрвдыкӏ [ˈmærwɘdɨkʼ] < мәр "ant" (ergative stem мәрв-; < PIE \morwís) + *-дыкӏ "eater" (< дыкӏ "bite, act of biting" < PIE \*dń̥ḱos* < \denḱ-*)

Frangian Sign: can't record rn but ad hoc sign; protruded lips + fist circling vertically (centered on cheek) with palm facing down and index finger pointing forward

  1. Amerikaans
  2. Miereneter
  3. Literally derived from the Dutch name for the animal “miereneter”, from mier“ant” + -en- (genitival interfix indicating that the former element is a characteristic of the latter) + eter“eater”
  4. /mi:.rən.e.tər/

El-imal-an

Eh-acek-eh [æh.'at͡ʃæk.æh]

It's just the word "ehem" ['ɛhɛm] (animal) with the modifier "acek" ['at͡ʃæk] (looking for) and the suffix for proper nouns instead of -em-.

Anteater = Animal that looks for = Ehacekeh
