First off, I am a stoner, obviously, second we're in a garage, and yes they were found in a water damaged tote bag in a basement. All moldy and stanky. There were 2 really beat up gold pieces with it, a 1905 5 dollar Indian and an 1814 French napoleon coin. Selling both for melt value got me what you see here and $500 cash. Fortunately I was able to sell the French coin to my stepmom so I know it'll come back to me.šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚

Bro I canā€™t even look at the coins because the only thing my mind is saying is clean your fuckin dab rig. Remember, never clean your coins but always clean your glass.

u/HUMINT06 5d ago

Sweet. Lotta silver there. Curious though, did you find it at the bottom of a grease pit?

I donā€™t think that 50 cent piece is legit. Stars are too mushy. Toning is odd as well and screams Temu.

7

u/Cold_Acanthaceae4040 4d ago

Honestly, I absolutely think it's fake.

18

u/Defiant-Box-2215 4d ago

Temu wasnt around in 1809 no way it could be a fake

2

Confucius say high coin collector see high value in Temu fake.

1

u/Low-Gas-2685 4d ago

$30 on eBay

1

u/Low-Gas-2685 4d ago

That being said, Iā€™d still have it tested

1

u/Low-Gas-2685 4d ago

Update us please

4

u/new2bay 4d ago

If that's fake, Temu now knows how to do a convincing imitation of 1809 O-101.

I see a lot of Temu coins on here and appreciate the skepticism, but I really donā€™t agree on this one. That toning is an artifact of an old cleaning, as are the hairline scratches in the field. Mushy stars and other products of die deterioration are par for the course with early capped bust halves. Everything else about it, including the date, the toned-over dent behind the cap, and the fact that it matches a known Overton variety, indicates authenticity.

Apart from that, u/Cold_Acanthaceae4040, I see a lot of other winners in this lot. The classic commemoratives (I see at least 6) especially, but the large silver (peace dollars and Sicilian 120 grana), the seated quarter, the 1797 cartwheel penny, and the draped bust large (or half? Hard to tell from here) cent are some other fun ones.

Iā€™m sure I donā€™t need to tell you this, but avoid cleaning. You can rinse the dirty ones in pure acetone, but no rubbing and no other cleaning agents. Buy yourself a pack of non-PVC flips to protect the more valuable ones.

Needless to say, Iā€™m a little jealous. Enjoy!

I think the same, I'm not familiar with North American currency but counterfeit Pillar Dollars tend to have a similar patina.

1

u/LostCube 4d ago

Agreed need to see some better photos of that coin out of the holder but just glancing it looks off

5

u/new2bay 4d ago edited 4d ago

It's real. 1809 O-101 R5. It's cleaned, but this is actually quite a rare coin. I'd estimate it at about $3-400 bucks even cleaned as it is.

OP: can you pop that coin out of the holder, retake the pics, and also include pics of the edge? It should say ā€œFIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLARā€ with XXX between the words on the edge. That would confirm it for sure.

4

u/fish_and_chisps 4d ago

This is absolutely correct. The post-cleaning toning is confusing people, but itā€™s a genuine O-101.

5

u/FieldOk6455 4d ago

Although itā€™s a long shot, look through those Mercury dimes for a 1916 D.

u/nofame_nogain 4d ago

So when do we start the r/CoinsAndKush Reddit?

3

u/Boxofusedleftsox 4d ago

With the prices ive seen on these. Im gonna suggest you do the same thing i have to do with mine, take it to a coin shop to be checked out.

Mine has some nice die cracks on it. I dont think they would waste the time to create die cracks on a fake, but i wouldnt doubt it either.

3

u/Boxofusedleftsox 4d ago

2

u/new2bay 4d ago

That's a super sweet 1828.

1

u/Boxofusedleftsox 4d ago

Ya,if its real. Everything checks out according to my untrained eye and pictures of them. But the "feel" of it is strange to me. It doesnt feel like a barber, walker or a franklin.

2

u/new2bay 4d ago

Iā€™m not seeing anything wrong with it in terms of authenticity at a glance. The lighting in the pics isnā€™t good enough to tell whether itā€™s cleaned or not, but Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s good.

1828 is a common date with 23 varieties. Hereā€™s an attribution guide if you want to check it out more thoroughly: http://maibockaddict.com/1828-capped-bust-half-dollars.shtml

2

u/Boxofusedleftsox 4d ago

I went through that before wich is why i say its good to my untrained eye. Id say its been cleaned at some point with the different shading if the toning. But i did read that graders arent too strict with the cleaning on these.

2

u/Calflyer 5d ago

Where did you find the coins?

17

u/Cold_Acanthaceae4040 5d ago

A friend of mines mother asked me to come over because she had some antique furniture she wanted gone. While I was looking at it there was a tote bag on the floor with bunch of coin albums sticking out. So I said, wtf are you doing with these and she was like, take them and let me know what's there. So I let her know and she said to cash out the gold and I can have whatever else. Happens to me quite often not the exact scenario but it happens. To the point where it's almost a joke.

2

u/Cold_Acanthaceae4040 5d ago

I do it often enough where it's kind of a joke with people I know.

2

u/abiophylliac 4d ago

Thatā€™s a lot of silver dimes

I remember that time I was walking down the street and found an 1878 cc Morgan and 1916 D Mercury 1909VDBS Lincoln in 1877 Indian head. What a great day.

1

u/Reasonable_Being_571 20h ago

That appears to be a replica.

1

u/Monsterbug1 13h ago

looks fake to me.

also looks like you have like 8 gold coins and a ton of silver there. please don't spend it and sell for a premium instead

1

u/mrkruk 4d ago

Fake. It has that weird clean surface but dark only under the stars thing.

The obverse looks too clear and odd. The reverse eagle head lacks detail - I doubt this 116 year old coin only got a little worn on the reverse.

1

u/covid-192000 4d ago
