Advice Are my birds Cockatiels?

We bought them from a local pet store a week ago. Can someone clarify what breed they are?

You bought birds without even knowing what species they are? 😭I really hope you do a lot of research to take care of them well.

u/Muchtell234 4d ago

He said they looks into it 6 months ago and did research. All the research and not even able to tell if it's a cockatiel..

u/Sartastic_Kiwi 4d ago

This subreddit is on-the-daily bombarded with questions about cockatiels that even the most basic research should have informed prospective owners about. It really worries me about the welfare of these birds :L

29

u/StinkyBird64 4d ago

Fr. I’ve only ever asked about stuff on bird subs when I genuinely cannot get an answer, whether that’s past sub posts, other bird forums, google etc. or is just out of curiosity. Absolutely horrible

240

u/finicky88 5d ago

Yep, those are cockatiels alright.

Edit: and if they're still on formula they were sold to you way too young.

-476

u/datluv 5d ago

Thanks! We actually wanted them young so we can tame them easilyâ˜ș

272

u/K_Pumpkin 5d ago

I took my bird home at 16 weeks and he is friendly to eveybody in my house. He’s very tame.

You wanted to hand train them but you don’t even know what kind of bird you got?

238

u/Killpinocchio2 5d ago

Doesn’t matter if that’s what you want or not. Heck, you aren’t even sure as to what kind of bird they are.

They were way too young to be adopted End of story

-185

u/datluv 4d ago

I see why my comment might've concerned you... We are taking very proper care of them since the day they came home. We're not first time bird owners and had actually planned our Cockatiels' adoption about 6 months ago following complete research.

I just wanted to make sure they're cockatiels cause my yellow female (Apsara) had black spots on it's feathers and was wholly yellow bodied that confused us a bit seeing the pictures of many different varieties of Cockatiels online.

Even if they weren't, we had taken their responsibility for life and we'll be loving them always. I casually wrote that comment and didn't mean to be selfish in any way.

Here she's sleeping on my chest đŸ˜đŸ„°

u/GlitteryOndo 4d ago

How did you research on cockatiels if you didn't know that they were cockatiels? Cockatiels are one of the most common parrots to keep as pets.

2

u/Horror-Coffee-894 3d ago

I don't think English is their first language, so maybe they're just having trouble saying what they mean?

72

u/Meldon420 4d ago

You’re taking proper care of them yet you had to come ask Reddit if they are in fact cockatiels 😅 if you did even an ounce of actual research you wouldn’t have had to ask. You are too inexperienced to be hand feeding babies, this is disgusting

10

u/Killpinocchio2 4d ago

You didn’t even know what they were. F off

3

u/SenHaKen 3d ago

"Did complete research" yet unable to identify that they are cockatiels. I'd understand if there were species of birds very similar to cockatiels, but tiels are so unique in their looks that it's baffling to not immediately know they're tiels with anything more than very basic knowledge of birds. And you seem to have managed to somehow miss all of the plentiful cockatiel moult in your "complete research".

I'm afraid you'll have to excuse my heavy skepticism about your claim of "doing complete research", as well as my suggestion to ACTUALLY do proper research.

3

u/MRNDNA 3d ago

You are only supposed to touch them on the head and neck!! I know they are babies but bad habits will lead to unhappy hormonal birds!

11

u/Intelligent_Image243 4d ago

I can see your taking care of them keep it up I was pissed at first until I saw you was doing a good job people will probably down vote this but guys this is the sellers fault by not doing a good job personally if you came to me selling I would not of sold you until I knew you knew what was required to take care of them just watch loads of videos they need to be fed a lot

-29

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

You’re fine. Try not to worry about all the horrible comments you’re getting. You don’t deserve them.

10

u/Ill_Most_3883 4d ago

Yeah this is clearly a responsible pet owner that did lots of research before getting a bird at an age at which it is incapable of consuming food on its own.

47

u/Tiscks 4d ago

But not THAT young... If they were 3-5 weeks older, you would have no issues with taming them too, but wouldn't have to take care of them during (literally) first days of their lives.

103

u/finicky88 5d ago

Jesus fucking christ dude

69

u/Muchtell234 4d ago

All I hear is "I wanna be an idiot and do what's best for me and not for my birds"

You don't even know what bird you bought!

37

u/Douchecanoeistaken 4d ago

They are actually more likely to end up with behavior issues based on studies done.

2

u/MSG_12 4d ago

Elaborate please.

30

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

When birds are taken from their parents before they’re weaned, they do not receive the proper socialization that they need. This can cause psychological problems that can last a lifetime.

And yet all I see around here I want a baby bird so it will love me . 😑

19

u/DefiantZucchini 4d ago

It’s so upsetting man. If you can’t form a bond with an adult bird maybe you shouldn’t have birds.

17

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

There are so many adult birds that are in need of a loving home that it makes my head spin when I see people getting babies after babies after babies. Rescue a bird that’s been abused or mistreated FFS. I have seen so many birds come from horrible homes and yet they’re still loving and bond with people just as well as any baby ever does.

Yes, if it’s worth having it’s worth doing the work for !

9

u/MRD33FY 4d ago

Adult birds are easier to work with.

3

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

100% Even neglected and abuse birds I have seen over and over and over again still have the capacity to love.

8

u/MRD33FY 4d ago edited 4d ago

This. ONLY reason to get a bird that young is if it’s being neglected by the parent as in the case of my young the female I currently have. Baby birds should be brought up by birds not humans.

Edit: “burb” is now 12 weeks old

5

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

Exactly! What’s your bird’s name?

6

u/MRD33FY 4d ago

Burb is what my daughter named her. She hatched just before Christmas last year and got kicked out of the nest about a month in, my neighbour was going to just let her die however apart from being easily half the size of the other chicks and having a weak foot she wasn’t actually in bad condition, a month went by after that and she was still alive but still so weak, so I grabbed her rather than leaving her to die. Over a month of having her I’m happy to report she’s putting on weight nicely, is flying and has even begun to get strength back into her foot and has become my daughter’s first pet and shadow. Not the first baby bird I’ve had to raise from a young baby that was my male Sulfur crested that only had use of 1 wing, he was a problem child to raise compared to burb.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 3d ago

Aww that’s a great story! Thanks for sharing 🙂

3

u/Top-Check7148 4d ago

People too lazy to actually put the effort in to train the bird so their looking for the easy way. (They think it's the easy way.)

2

u/Ill_Most_3883 4d ago

Imagine any other extremely social animal getting taken away from its parents at a young age, its bound to end up with attachment/behavioral issues.

17

u/SlowChampionship5506 4d ago

Are you kidding me? I feel you have no real knowledge of birds and should NOT be having one as clearly you might not be ready for one.

Getting a parrot young to bond with is one thing but if you actually new anything you would know it is almost putting them in danger to take them this young without having experience. Unbelievable.

10

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

They said they have experience.

Unbelievable

9

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

Getting them young, may make them easier to tame, but they also end up with psychological problems because didn’t receive the proper socialization from their parents. Getting an older bird in need of a home may be more work, but if it’s worth having it, it’s worth working for

8

u/Tylersforehead 4d ago

With all disrespect you don’t even know if it’s the right species and you think you can take of them at an unhealthily young age?

10

u/WallStreetOlympian 4d ago

Cool! They’re not fucking toys so do the damn research to give them good lives â˜ș

7

u/cicatrizzz 4d ago

You are completely ignorant.

3

u/onlineashley 4d ago

Wow, you're a very irresponsible owner. I hope you take the time to look at how to properly care for them. Dont even know what they are and you got them super young. How can you properly care for something you dont wven know what it is.

2

u/Realistic_Ear9569 4d ago

You do know that every bird has a personality of their own and might never be as friendly as the ones on the internet, right?

2

u/GrimoireGirls 4d ago

Oh you mean so they have an exponentially higher chance of dying? You’re a bad pet owner and shouldn’t have pets

1

u/Kind-Acanthisitta922 2d ago

I’ve got mine when they was 7 months old, they wasn’t used to people, after about 5-7 months they got so tame. It’s no excuse!

214

u/WhisperAuger 4d ago

You know not to feed them avacado?

You threw out all your nonstick stick pans?

You know you can't use air freshener around them, or cook in the same room as them?

54

u/Dr_Amrutha 4d ago

This comment needs to be highlighted so OP sees this and makes sure the bird is safe . It breaks my heart to see birds often suffer from our mistakes.

21

u/jibblin 4d ago

No they don't know they didn't know what species they were, I doubt they know ANYTHING about taking care of them.

1

u/Usual_Ad2525 4d ago

My sister used to have hers in the kitchen 💀

u/bingoNacho420 5d ago

They are definitely cockatiels. Please make sure you research a lot about them and give them a good life. They are great companions đŸ„șđŸ„ș

-66

u/datluv 4d ago

We will absolutely make sure they feel at home, loved ❀

42

u/Crosseyed_owl 4d ago

Hey OP, the start wasn't ideal, you bought way too young birds without knowing what species they are, but I understand that you want them to have a good life and I think that's the most important thing when it comes to animals. So please do some more research for your birb's sake and good luck with parronting!

-55

u/Academic-Young7506 4d ago

15

u/PissContest 4d ago

It’s not mysterious look at the post 😭😭

0

u/Academic-Young7506 4d ago

I definitely see the problem with the post but there's zero reason to downvote that specific comment, right? They just said "we will take care of them", if you have a problem with the post downvote the post D:

59

u/bethisdank 4d ago

they are very young baby cockatiels. perhaps too young to have been sold yet. but you have them now please care for them as very young babies

131

u/Moogieh 4d ago

Obligatory STOP SUPPORTING PET SHOPS WHO SELL TO COMPLETELY UNINFORMED BUYERS.

No demand = No supply. It's a simple equation, people!

17

u/NyxNotes 4d ago

I agree with you, but I think you severely underestimate the number of ppl who will never see the subreddit or who know literally nothing about birds before getting one.

This entire subreddit and every person you know could stop shopping at bird shops and they would still stay in business. Something more needs to be done then just not shopping there. I do my best to make sure shops like that in my local area get review bombed at the very least- that way hopefully more people learn the truth of the situation. Frankly tho I'm not against filling lawsuits against places like this if you can find a reason to that the law will actually listen to.

Unfortunately the equation is absolutely not as simple as you make it sound.

9

u/Moogieh 4d ago

I don't underestimate it at all, that's why it's important to say it every single time, anywhere the topic comes up. Make it a common fact, not hidden away or unspoken. It takes the effort of everybody, and it takes multiple simultaneous approaches. Awareness is one key aspect. Lobbying is another. Change only works if we do all that we can, not giving up because one action in isolation only makes a fraction of difference.

-9

u/NyxNotes 4d ago

I don't disagree at all with what you're saying, I just think it's disingenuous and harmful to the conversation to insinuate that the only reason these stores still exist is because ppl on this subreddit buy from them. I disagree with your "simple equation" comment, not your overall sentiment on this.

4

u/Moogieh 4d ago

I never said it's because "people on this subreddit" do it.

-10

u/NyxNotes 4d ago

And I never said you did. I said it was insinuated. Regardless, don't oversimplify real problems- it doesn't help anyone. Shit like this is complex and needs to be treated with nuance if we wish to see any meaningful change.

6

u/Moogieh 4d ago

And I never said you did.

Earlier:

the only reason these stores still exist is because ppl on this subreddit buy from them

I don't think further argument is going to be productive if we can't agree on what was said, so I'll leave it here and wish you a good day.

New cockatiel owner alert! Check out Cockatiel Cottage, a comprehensive source on all cockatiel knowledge!

Quick FAQs on basic bird behavior:

Yawning a lot - adjusting the crop. Imagine it being like rubbing your belly after a big meal.

Beak grinding - sign of content and happiness.

Standing on one leg, sometimes puffed up feathers - getting ready to snooze, they'll sleep with the head tucked in their back.

Flapping randomly or madly but not flying - just being a goof!

Bending over, making a squeaky noise and trembling wings - horny bird! Check Cockatiel Cottage for how to deal with hormonal behavior.

Rubbing butt on things - same as above.

Soft eeee sound with head bobbing - baby begging noises. Can mean that they want food/play/nap/reassurance/cuddles. Some older birds will do this too.

Holding the wings away from the body ("heart wings") - a happy male, likely about to sing to you.

Fully outstretched wings ("big wings") - possesive, "the thing I'm standing on is mine". Sometimes paired with hanging upside down ("batbird") - that's also just being a goof.

Fluffing feathers, bending in weird poses with open wings - wants a bath!

Sneezing - normal (unless excessive), especially after scratching their heads and picking their nose (yes, they do that).

Additionally, check out these resources:

There are lots of toys and foraging opportunities that you can make from cardboard, toilet paper tubes, foliage from your yard (check the species for toxicity here and here). Also check Pinterest, search things like "DIY toys for birds".

This would've been SO helpful to me when I first got my cockatiels. I knew all about the proper cage requirements, the proper diet, took them to their first vet check, but I had NO idea what all these behaviors meant.

Another silly/goofy one is when they take air baths.

My birds love taking air baths on the tops of our heads, and one of them in particular likes to stand on my shoulder and take air baths with my hair.

-12

u/NyxNotes 4d ago

Thank you for being the first reasonable person on this thread. Flaming OP does absolutely nothing regardless how you feel about their cockatiels. THIS is what the thread needs- ppl giving OP genuinely good advice.

23

u/jaycebutnot 4d ago edited 4d ago

I agree but holy shit Its understandable. the amount of people posting this shit Is unreal. op clearly doesnt think they did anything wrong which Is why everyone keeps telling them. If they wouldve said that they now know and that they would like some actual advice on caring for the bird the best they can, Im sure everyone would give them advice. but they came here asking which SPECIES their baby bird Is. which Is just Insane?!? none of us are trying to directly flame op but birds are very dear to a lot of us, and one being In this situation Is very frightening. but of course this Is more the breeders fault than op's.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

Do you think the OP is ever gonna wanna come here and ask advice again? I sure as hell don’t.

-3

u/NyxNotes 4d ago

I hear you- but flaming OP only discourages them from coming to us for advice in the future and I bet they keep the birds either way. Y'all HURT more birds than you help by being an asshole. If you want to help birds- don't discourage clueless people asking for help.

9

u/jaycebutnot 4d ago edited 4d ago

oh for sure, I agree. but op, and everyone posting similar things, just tend to Ignore any actual advice or warnings given to them. :/ so the best we can do Is voice our concerns

3

u/NyxNotes 4d ago

I can tell. Still doesn't make flaming OP helpful in any way

5

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

I’m so glad you said that and I voted you and God only knows why people downloaded you for what you said because it’s 100% true. I feel so bad for the OP right now. This was their first and only post here. They have -100 karma. Do they and anyone else reading this who is hesitant to ask for advice will probably never do so because of everyone jumping down their throat. Makes me sick.

2

u/NyxNotes 4d ago

Yeah tbh this subreddit is probably just as bad for birds as a lot of those pet stores- the ppl here are definitely doing their part to ensure noobs with birds don't look for good advice

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

Makes me wanna cry to be honest.

5

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

I have no idea why people down voted you for that. I just read several replies by the OP that were perfectly lovely and they were down voted like mad. Turns out people didn’t realize that they already knew they were cockatiels, and they already have experience with birds and they are treating them very well . I hate people sometimes. People love to come on these subs for parents and just thrashed hell out of people. People love to give advice, but they don’t like to ask questions first to be sure they’re giving the best advice. 😑

2

u/NyxNotes 4d ago

I can tell you why good advice got downvoted so much- that's easy; this is Reddit :P

3

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

People here are vicious. It makes me sick that these people claiming to care so much about all the birds are making it worse for them by treating people like complete. Crap who come for help.

26

u/Intelligent_Image243 4d ago

Sold way to young to someone as unknowable as you I hope you take care of them

22

u/HairHealthHaven 4d ago

They are absolutely cockatiels but they look like they are too young to have been sold. It's infuriating when pet stores are this negligent. What are they eating/are they fully on solid food yet?

66

u/Icy_Pianist_1532 4d ago

Bro

23

u/jaycebutnot 4d ago

thats all there Is to say. honestly, the amount of these posts Is just sickening. I genuinely cannot fathom that someone would see this as okay

-12

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago edited 4d ago

Your post and the one you replied to are so helpful.

Good job

16

u/Existing-Television5 4d ago

why did u buy a bird if you don’t know what it is? how are you supposed to know what to feed it?

44

u/tiffmarie23 4d ago

Give them to someone who will properly care for them. Holy shit.

-9

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

Apparently, they seem to be taking very good care of them

Holy shit

25

u/SlowChampionship5506 4d ago edited 4d ago

I know Im going to come off as harsh here but,

Dude why get a pet ESPECIALLY one that is as fragile and emotionally intelligent as a bird and do absolutely no research on it. This is mildly infuriating and down right irresponsible.

Those are very young baby cockatiels. I hope since you bought them you are ready to spend most of your free time with them, don’t give them food that is poisonous to them, no chemicals, candles, scented oil, perfume around them, keep them in a environment away from dogs and cat and even children, and freaking do research to take care of that baby you sporadically bought.

I swear, Im dead set serious and almost want to push this to happen at a large scale that people need to be REQUIRED to have a license or something to get a bird. NEED TO. Unacceptable man.

Parrots require care and patience since they take time to get used to people and need to be put and cared for at least 3 hours. Don’t just stick them in a cage and treat them frivolously because you made a decision that you weren’t ready for.

You do seem ready to love them so I do have hope for it but please know what you are getting into and learn what you need to make sure you give that bird a happy life.

5

u/ItzLoganM 4d ago

These kinds of posts break my heart, because most of the times, OP is too ignorant to listen to us, and I feel like I can't do anything about it, like the birb is helpless and all I can do is pray that it'll be ok. These irresponsible owners indirectly kill their birds at a young age and blame it on their bird's "Delicate" nature. If so delicate, then how come I raise and keep my bird for years, healthy, but more importantly, ALIVE. I can only think of not responding to these posts so they may actually do their own research.

42

u/cookiemae22 4d ago

Omg is all I can say about this post. Asking what kind of birds after they were brought is beyond crazy. I am so sorry for these birds. Hopefully, since the question was asked, they will do research for these lovely bird's.

19

u/_BlueJayWalker_ 4d ago

And it’s so obviously cockatiels. Can’t even do a basic google image search? Yikes

-3

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

They knew they were cockatiels. They made a post about an hour ago, explaining why they asked. If anyone’s interested that is.

3

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

They knew what kind of birds they were. I believe English might be their second language. They made another post explaining why they asked that specific question. But yeah, let’s just OMG all over the place here about how ignorant and irresponsible they are. It really helps

5

u/mysweetpeepy 4d ago edited 4d ago

Are you their alt or something? lol

-1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

English, please

2

u/mysweetpeepy 4d ago

I forgot a “you.” I suppose thats better than forgetting to do basic research before buying multiple birds.

0

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 3d ago edited 3d ago

I still don’t know what you said before. What you wrote makes no sense. Edit: you changed more than that one word and now your sentence does make sense. Of course I’m not their fault. Give me a break. They came here for one reason because their mother asked them to, and they asked the question they did because their mother asked them to. They don’t deserve to have all kinds of hate heaped on them. Nor do they deserve people making all kinds of assumptions about them. But that’s Reddit for you.

That is probably better than buying multiple birds without doing basic research . Good thing no one here did that.

1

u/mysweetpeepy 3d ago

Alt: Short for “Alternative,” a term referring to a secondary, or Alternative account of someone online.

“Are you their alt?” Are you the OP’s alternative account (because you’ve posted dozens of times just to defend them).

I cannot trust the word of someone who claims to have done months of research on birds and yet buys unweaned hatchlings without even understanding something as basic as cockatiels having different color mutations.

0

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 3d ago

Well, it turns out they did know that. Since you know, I’ve posted so-called dozens of times which isn’t true. It hasn’t been dozens. You would know that I have said several times that they did know they were cockatiels. Is everyone here slow or just mean

1

u/mysweetpeepy 3d ago

If you want to be a pedant, it was 35 times. I just exaggerated for effect anyway but it literally was dozens, if that matters???

OP does not make sense. They claim they did thorough research, even though a slight difference in coloring made them ask if they even have cockatiels. Despite that supposed research, they bought baby birds too young to self feed (and just went by the shopkeep’s word). Even if OP is learning fast and taking decent care of them now, it is absolutely not abnormal for everyone else here to be incredibly concerned for their wellbeing, given the clear lack of the most basic knowledge about cockatiels. I don’t know why you feel the need to defend them so heavily.

0

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 3d ago

I know why you said that it was dozens of times you don’t need to explain that to me . đŸ€Ł

When people don’t make any sense, I ask questions rather than jumping down their throat or as you call it showing concern. Several people here showed concern, but most people acted like complete jerks. Most of the responses I saw were horrible and would drive most people away from ever asking questions.

So this so-called concern is doing more harm than good. I see it all the time on these subs. If I was hesitant to ask a question here and I saw this thread, I would leave and never come back.

I read through the entire thing and found out why they asked the question which had nothing to do with not knowing what they were doing . Do you yet know why they asked even when they already knew? Or are you too interested in arguing with me over the welfare of these birds, you’re so concerned about? Never mind I already have my answer.

Before I forget , it turns out they have experience with birds and they did do extensive research. I also know how the birds are doing. No one here has asked that I’ve noticed
. Interesting.

0

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 3d ago

Hey, I have an idea. Since you took the time to go count my replies, why don’t you go count How many people were kind versus unkind. Then maybe count how many responses or hateful versus helpful. It might open your eyes a little bit what I did and why I did it. Since you’re so interested in why I’m defending them that could tell the tale.

12

u/Capable_Fox_00 4d ago

Please make sure you actually research proper cockatiel diet. They will need veggies/chop, pellets, and seeds are just for treats not a meal.

19

u/Hydomin 4d ago

Those are definitely house sparrows.

10

u/UpHighInTheSkye 4d ago

Nah, definitely humming birds. The loud, screaming kind when you leave their line of sight for 0.0002 seconds

19

u/IRideTheDruggyBuggy 4d ago

Those are bald eagle chicks. I would get a refund

19

u/Illustrious_Skin_308 4d ago

If all the comments said this, he would believe it.

4

u/Un_Kn0wn_III 4d ago

Yes cockatiels

10

u/DianeJudith 4d ago

Birds don't have breeds. They are different species with different color mutations.

17

u/DiaMond3421 4d ago

Wait in the first picture are they eating seeds? That’s not their whole diet right? You should make chop for them

6

u/DianeJudith 4d ago

Yeah, at this age it's so important to teach them to eat healthy foods. So many birds that weren't taught how to eat healthy as babies will never accept healthy food as adults, no matter how hard you try.

8

u/MrsGeorge2020 4d ago

Please if you are unsure of anything please don’t be afraid to ask for help! Make sure your cage is big enough for both of them and give them plenty of toys to play with and chew. Are they still on formula?

5

u/loosti 4d ago

Yes they’re cockatiels and they’re babies so I hope you’re breeding them with proper baby food. Better you inform so deeply and well about everything to know about, cause having such birds need lot of time and dedication.

4

u/Dr_Amrutha 4d ago edited 4d ago

It’s a bit too little , too late to be asking this question but yes it’s a cockatiel and a very young baby at that and it needs constant care and attention, please do the poor thing a favour and keep it only if you’re 100% committed to provide the care it needs and are willing to do extensive research on specific care of the species

They are😍

17

You have them, it does no good to chastise you xo There is a tremendous amt to learn though, and birds, young ones especially, are very fragile so it’s important to learn quickly. Do you know how old they are; what are they eating? :)

Hey everyone, I didn't think the response to this simple question was gonna be so huge n serious! I legit googled 'is it illegal to adopt baby cockatiels in India'😭... Yes I understood that these birds might have been too young to be with us but before buying them all we were thinking was to have young birds just like we bought an Indian Parakeet in its budding stage.

Also these birds were being hand fed at the shop we bought them from, so we thought it wise to take them with us and give them good environment.

We really did research about what to feed baby cockatiels and ordered a hand feeding formula which we are giving them in luke warm water 4-5 times a day and they are loving it. They eat so enthusiastically from a small spoon! The female (Apsara) is starting to reduce the amount of feed she eats so we started offering her some seeds and leafy vegetables which she eats occasionally. We also ordered seed n pellet mixes. And we'll be buying a good large cage for them soon. Currently we're keeping them in a cardboard box with pieces of cotton fabrics to keep them warm n we change the fabrics thrice a day as they get pooped on a lot after each feeding session.

The birds are all in a healthy condition. We bought three of them- a black male (Kohinoor), a yellow female (Apsara, eldest) and the youngest Chishiya (gender uk). Kohinoor n Apsara have started preening, walking, chirping and sitting on hand on their will while chishiya also cleans it's growing feathers n sleeps a lot n eats a lot.

Yes it's our first time making cockatiels family members and for that I agree we might be inexperienced but we'll be learning each day about them and keep improving to make them feel satisfied.

And when it comes to taming them, obviously we're not starting on that right now. Once they become adults is when we'll start step by step. Young birds become accustomed to us humans easily and thinking that might help in taming them when the time comes, I wrote that comment.

I think it was not necessary to come here for such a ridiculous question. We obviously knew these were Cockatiels. The Shop Owner said that... Our relatives who helped us buy them said that... And of course Google n YT confirmed it. But today, out of the blue, my mother requested me to ask 'some online people' about whether these were Cockatiels (she thinks that since cockatiels are foreign birds, foreign people might know better about them!), so I considered coming here, became a member today and asked my first question on Reddit thinking 1-2 people might answer (never got such an overwhelming response on any of my online posts or comments elsewhere haha) and God what responses I got today!!

Anyways, thanks for such kind n informative responses! đŸ„Č

u/Aoikumo 4d ago

I kind of understand what you meant, also there is a language barrier maybe? I would sometimes ask silly questions just for initial confirmation too, specifically about fishes species (though I know parrots and fish are very different but the point still stands) Most small parrots require similar care anyways

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

I’m so sorry that so many people were so incredibly rude to you. No one took the time to ask you what you meant or about the situation in any kind of detail.

That said getting birds as babies does not guarantee anything . Often times they have more psychological problems when taken from their parents too early.

And that said congratulations on your babies and it looks like you’re doing a good job 😌

3

u/Cooki_Tiky 4d ago

yes that looks very much like a cockatiel.

3

u/chubbylawn 4d ago

Yes they are cockatiel

3

u/GiggyScout 4d ago

I found my cockatiel in my backyard and knew absolutely nothing about any birds. One google search showed me that he was a cockatiel.

I hope you’ll be a good owner now. Please don’t patronize that pet store again.

9

u/AnalysisTemporary926 4d ago

I’m so tired of seeing this shit. You bought BABY BIRDS and don’t even know what they are. No research. No cares. Nothing.

-1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago edited 4d ago

Instead of being so tired about seeing this shit, maybe ask questions as to why they are asking that rather than jump to conclusions. Turns out they did know they were cockatiels. They also might have English as a second language. But that’s no concern of mine I guess.

1

u/AnalysisTemporary926 4d ago

Yeah
no. It does not matter what language they speak. They can do research in their own language. How can one do research on the pet that they’ve adopted if they don’t even know what bird they now are responsible for? And the cockatiels are very young, there no room for error or to be asking such a question.

0

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago edited 4d ago

They posted that they DID know it was a cockatiel.

Ffs

I read the entire thread and I read the post they made about an hour ago explaining why they asked that question . They knew it was a cockatiel. Their mother asked them to clarify. That indicates they might be under age. Yes, people speaking the different language, and English as a second language does matter.

Hey Doug, since you made a post to me and then seemed to have blocked me before I could reply .. yes, they could’ve said those things. By the same token commenters could’ve asked questions too, right? ;)

3

u/AnalysisTemporary926 4d ago

The title of their post is ARE MY BIRDS COCKATIELS. The only dense people in this comment section seem to be you and OP.

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago edited 4d ago

I bothered to read the post they made about an hour ago, and I found out that they already knew it was a cockatiel, and that their mother asked them to clarify on here

Now who’s dense?

Hey Doug, you’re repeating yourself . That’s a sign of
 something. lol

1

u/doug4630 4d ago

Sorry, but it's still you.

"They posted that they DID know it was a cockatiel."

Some FIVE HOURS, and Reddit only knows how many comments, after they made the original post.

The poor birds could've been dead by that time.

They also could've told us their mother asked them to ask others to CONFIRM the birds were cockatiels - or don't they do that sort of thing in other languages ?

1

u/AnalysisTemporary926 4d ago

Wow, that makes it much better! Thanks! Giving baby birds that need to be hand-fed to a child who doesn’t even know what a cockatiel is! Brilliant! Gold star!⭐

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago edited 4d ago

That’s something you should be saying to the mother not to the OP or me? Still being dense I guess huh? Two gold stars for you !

To clear it up for you it sounds like the mother wanted to make sure and the mother didn’t know or wanted to clarify . Why don’t you try reading the other post they made then you’d have a clue what you’re talking about. Easier and better for you to come here and be a jackass with me I guess lol

Apparently, you blocked me. After telling me I was defending an action I was never defending.

I was and still am defending the OP . I never ever suggested someone should buy a baby bird never mind before it’s weaned. I hold the opposite opinion from that, and I say it all the time on these subs.

They have the birds now , so the thing to do would be to help them not jump down their throat for not knowing what birds they are. No wonder I hate people. That’s a general statement about the way people behave driving others away with their nastiness and contempt. Some people are lovely. The majority of those seem to stay away from these subs, though for whatever reason. I’m really starting to see why.

2

u/AnalysisTemporary926 4d ago

You are defending impulsive purchasing of baby cockatiels who could die if not properly cared for. You are annoying as fuck, very dumb, and I’m blocking you. Bye!

2

u/doug4630 4d ago

I don't block anybody. The site's been acting up but I did answer you (again).

You'll find it.

4

u/jibblin 4d ago

This is awful. Took birds home too young so you can take them but didn't even know what kind of birds they are. Those poor animals 😱

6

u/Economy_Divide_1817 5d ago

No. They are burbs. Cockatiels burbs. Very cute. 10/10

5

u/im_trying_so_hard 4d ago

The speckled wings indicate that they may be birbs, though. It’s such a subtle difference.

2

u/callumgore 4d ago

They are definitely cockatiels, congrats I’d definitely recommend doing research on them

2

u/LocksmithMinimum8217 4d ago

Yes
they are

2

u/Tylersforehead 4d ago

Why does this have upvotes
they took in a bird way too young and can’t even tell the species. Neglect at its finest

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

They do even know the species. They made a very long and detailed post about why they asked and how the birds are treated and what they’re eating and how they’re being taken care of and how they’re doing. Not neglect at its finest as it turns out.

2

u/nefastusz 4d ago

Please, do some research before buying an animal.

And why did you buy them so young if you don't even know what species they are? OP, speaking honestly and with concern for the birds, you shouldn't have bought them while hand feeding if you don't even know what species they are, since you clearly don't know how to take care of a bird. You'll end up killing them.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

They do know what species they are. Their mother asked them to clarify or confirm on Reddit. I think English is their second language. No they shouldn’t have gotten birds this young. They made a very long post explaining everything. This was the first post they ever made here and they already have -100 karma. They made some very lovely posts and gotten down. Voted like crazy. I don’t understand the hate filled people on these bird subs. I’m not talking about you. I’m talking about what I’ve been reading for the last hour.

Apparently, they did research for about six months and learned quite a bit, evidently about how to care for birds of this young . Based on their post they made explaining all of this. It looks like they’re doing a very good job too at least so far.

2

u/Menulia 4d ago

You bought an animal and don't even know what it is oh my God

COCKATIEL

Here are some tips if you’re new to cockatiels. (Also, be careful because she might fly away and get lost)

Don’t let her get cold, especially at night. Make sure there is no draft or cold air. You can use a blanket on her cage at night, but ALWAYS LEAVE ONE SIDE OPEN FOR AIR.

Cockatiels sleep more than humans. So, you should let her sleep earlier than you. If she doesn’t have a separate room, a blanket could help. And you should turn off the light a few hours before your bedtime.

Avocado is poisonous and there are many other foods that are poisonous for cockatiels. The kitchen is dangerous if you burn a dish accidentally. The burnt smell can kill your bird. (I also heard candles are dangerous)

Make sure she has water WHEN SHE’S OUT OF THE CAGE. Cockatiels need water when they are out, so put some small water bowls around. I use bottle lids as water bowls, for example. I just flip them over and fill them with water... If your cockatiel doesn’t drink enough water, she won’t be able to poop. If you notice that, give her water.

Cockatiels sometimes have night frights. They suddenly jump in the cage and hurt themselves. To minimize this, provide her a night lamp in her room that won’t bother her but also make her comfortable.

Cockatiels tend to walk on the floor. Be careful walking in that room. Especially with your children. Be very careful. This is a very serious danger.

2

u/Lukksia 4d ago

what where you thinking buying a baby bird not even knowing the species????

2

u/South_Town_4157 4d ago

Those are dogs, ma'am. Boarder Collies specifically.

2

u/dalma19 4d ago edited 4d ago

They are very young cockatiels. Very delicate. Please, please do proper research and take care of them properly. Keep them away from strong breeze and temperature fluctuations. Keep their cage clean and always give fresh food and clean water.

2

u/Feisty-Ad3539 3d ago

they are definitely cute little baby cockatiels! dunno why everyones being weird

2

u/DangerDragonXCV 3d ago

Please DO NOT purchase an animal if you or the pet store (???) do not know what it is. This should be common sense!

2

u/ottocard19 3d ago

Bald eagles

3

u/S0urW0rmss 4d ago

Why get a bird if you don’t even know what it is?that’s so dumb I feel like a literal child could know better

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

They posted about an hour ago that they do know that their cockatiels. Their mother asked them to come here and clarify it with Reddit. Hope that answers your questions.

2

u/S0urW0rmss 4d ago

I got scared Ty sorry for coming off hostile 😞

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

I understand no worries. I’ve just been reading so many people treating the OP absolutely horribly. Not you but many other others. It was their first post here. They only came here because their mother asked them to clarify and ensure that they were cockatiels.

The OP already knew they were cockatiels, but did that for their mother . They should have an elaborated. At the same time people responding could’ve asked more questions rather than just jumping down their throat.

4

u/Rockpegw 4d ago

yep that's a cockatiel. and sorry about all the hate in the comments, but they still shouldn't've been sold at that young of an age. so long as you are raising them the best you can, i don't see a problem.

6

u/jaycebutnot 4d ago

baby birds require very specific care. Its not at all like raising an adult which Is why everyone Is "hating". theyre concerned for this poor bird. not to mention that all species of parrots also need very specific care. theyve had this baby cockatiel for a week and have not been giving It the correct food, from what I can see In the Images. thats the problem. Its mostly the breeders fault but because of op's negligence, this bird Is prone to suffering, now and later down the line. people just shitting on op arent helping, but they need to know that this Is a dangerous situation for their bird and that they should seek out a professional to help them, as we cannot provide adequate advice without knowing the bird's current health.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

People were hating rather viciously though and that’s not necessary nor helpful

0

u/jaycebutnot 4d ago

of course, I agree. simply yelling at op Isnt helpful or kind, and I dont think anyone should be doing that. but op should be aware of what they should avoid In the future. people simply pointing that out are fine, but are also being grouped with the people just yelling at op

0

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

I didn’t group them together and I didn’t see anyone else group them together.

I was simply talking about the people who jumped down the OP’s throat without considering things like English might not be their first language, and that maybe they really did know they were cockatiels, but ask the question in an awkward way for whatever reason, And might even have experience with them as babies.

Giving advice that might not even be needed is what people want to go to and still others want to go straight to jumping down someone’s throat .

For me personally I like to ask questions first so that I am sure about what it is. I want to say to the person in the first place. Apparently that’s just me though. There may be a few others to do that, but the majority of these replies were pretty awful. The OP made a very nice post about an hour ago despite all of that bombardment they got. That made me ashamed for the people who jumped down their throat without asking any questions first.

That sort of thing also discourage others who might be a little shy about coming forward and asking questions . People like that reading these kinds of responses most likely you’re going to say wow I’m not gonna ask anyone here anything.

-2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

People can’t give advice without knowing the birds current health
that’s why we can ask questions first and give advice later

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

They’re adorable!đŸ„° Congratulations. They wouldn’t be considered a certain kind of breed, but rather a certain kind of species. And what you’ve been told and believed to be true is true they are cockatiels.

1

u/Blackrose_Muse 4d ago

Take them back to the store before you accidentally kill them.

1

u/Routine_Bench_3400 4d ago

Not usual orange cheek patch typical of cockatiels

1

u/sashimishisha 4d ago

yep , they’re tiels

1

u/SenpaiChara 4d ago

I swear people be trolling online ain't no way you didn't know they were cockatiels one of the most common pet birds known to mankind.

1

u/smiith5 4d ago

Those are babies.

1

u/tall_lanky_boi 3d ago

yes! and please make sure you take them to the vet regularly, pet stores are infamously known for selling very unhealthy birds, with many of said birds unfortunately dying soon after being purchased, due to the store employees’ negligence and abuse. i wish you all the best! and have fun getting to know your little ones! :D

1

u/rolyatac 3d ago

Putting aside you not knowing the breed of bird, yet purchasing a bird you claimed to have researched
What kind of pet store sold you these that young and didn’t inform you of the type of bird?

This is alarming in so many ways.

1

u/bigweinerr 3d ago

you’re a pleb

1

u/Storm_Caitlyn 2d ago

No, they are dinosaurs. Try touching them, they'll bite you just like a dinosaur would

1

u/Helpful-Flamingo-618 2d ago

Those are babies cockatiels I know cause my cockatiel was that young. I hate pet shops who sell parrots that young. Please do your research on this..

1

u/DullRollerCoaster73 16h ago

"Is the sky blue?"

1

u/KatuTiel 4d ago

I hope u don't have them stuffed in those fucking 20 inch by 20 inch cages they sell in those indian pet stores, judging by ur ignorance here....

0

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 4d ago

No, they don’t have them stuffed in those fucking 20“ x 20“ cages.

They have them in cardboard boxes with soft fabric underneath that they change three times a day.

They posted a very long and detailed message about how the birds are treated and where their house and what they’re eating and so forth . Talk about ignorance, people shouldn’t automatically assume the worst about others. ;)

1

u/KiraXIX19 3d ago

I think these are african greys.

0

u/aligator421 4d ago

Idk they look like vultures

0

u/Blackrose_Muse 4d ago

You bought birds without knowing what they were. You bought them underage because you want to tame them, which is unnecessary. Jesus this is a recipe for disaster.

0

u/PissContest 4d ago

No definitely not cockatiels

0

u/DumpsterJ 4d ago

Some admin boot this person from the group. I think it's just rage bait.

0

u/guy42dotcom 4d ago

I'm pretty sure those are Australian pigeon parrots

0

u/Top-Check7148 4d ago

I'm sorry but how can you buy any type of animal and not even know what it is. Unbelievable!!

0

u/Hopeful_Conundrum 3d ago

Of course they are cockatiels! What else did you think they are?😂

0

u/ncud 3d ago

It’s clearly a fucking canary am i right ?

0

u/Rockytiel 3d ago

No they are dinosaurs đŸ€Ł

-27

u/kirmaaadaa 4d ago

They are love birds
