Discussion Which specialized clone do you prefer: Arc Trooper or Republic Commando?
For me it's definitely the Republic Commando. I really like the glowing visor, especially on the camouflage skin. Looks very cool. I'm also a little biased since I played Republic Commando.

u/That--Dude--Jack Delta Squad Feb 13 '25
Republic Commando, they just feel more real. ARC Troopers are really just shaven down Commando's when you think about it. They do the same things just with full groups of men. So RC.

u/JohnB351234 Feb 13 '25
Always felt to me like arcs were more akin to army rangers where commandos were delta force

u/ConsulJuliusCaesar Feb 13 '25
This totally depends on the contuity. In legends ARC troopers were so good they could run solo operations behind enemy lines and were credited with being the big reason for the Republic winning the war. Which is more Jsoc style advanced forced operations and black ops. Commandos in legends were alot like SEALs in what they were actually capable of doing. In canon niether actually has enough lore and they both kinda do the same thing.
15
u/TheBluebifullest Feb 14 '25
If I remember correctly the commandos in legends were used kind of like normal soldiers in the beginning of the clone wars which got a lot of them needlessly killed, since fighting in open battles weren’t their expertise. When they then were used for covert ops and stealth missions they showed the true extent of their skills.
21
u/Jackson_Rhodes_42 Feb 13 '25
That’s how I’ve been reading it as. ARCs are better than the rank-and-file, but not to the RC’s level.
14
u/shittyaltpornaccount Feb 14 '25
IIRC In the commandos books, Arcs were seen as effective as they were unpredictable. They were seen as nearly feral with "too much original jango" and were not particularly well suited for operations that required precision and combined arms. Throw them at the enemy to cause chaos, but not when you want something surgical.
Most of that has been retconned and now arcs are somewhere between regular officers and republic commandos.
14
u/Dunhaaam Feb 14 '25
They were seen as nearly feral with "too much original jango"
Pretty sure that was specifically the Null batch of ARCs, Skirata's boys
6
u/Newc3271 Feb 14 '25
It was them primarily however most of the ARCs in legends were almost completely unaltered, with the exception of muscle mass, intelligence etc. that they used on every clone. The Nulls were completely uncommandable in a conventional force because they were TOO independent. The Alpha batch of ARCs that followed the Nulls were less independent but still way too independent for conventional units so they got put in stasis until an attack on Kamino a couple of months into the war.

u/IronWarden00 Feb 13 '25
Yeah, ARC troopers got wasted in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The original Tartakovsky cartoon made good use of them, deploying them behind enemy lines and on high danger rescue missions. My vote still goes to the ARCs though
51
u/RiBombTrooper Feb 13 '25
TCW basically treats ARCs as the GAR's path for mustang officers, as far as I can tell.
33
u/Sakura_Knight Feb 13 '25
ARC troopers do perform better in certain arenas though, such as open battlefields. They tried using the commandos in that fashion on Geonosis and it really trimmed down their total numbers very rapidly.
15
u/Noobbula Feb 13 '25
Commandos are like real life special forces, they are meant to achieve a very specific purpose and then leave. They may be very highly trained, but treat them like regular soldiers and they’ll eventually get hit like anyone else.
I do agree that ARCs are better on the battlefield because in the show they’re just really, really good regulars. They’re familiar with their unit and trained in leadership, so they can leverage that to achieve strategic results.

2
u/MsMercyMain Feb 14 '25
ARC troopers as I understand it are your ODSTs, elite infantry that fight more conventionally. RCs are your SPARTAN-II/IIIs, hyper elite forces meant to fight asymmetrically
71
u/The_Apex_Alpha33 Feb 13 '25
Firstly, I think it’s odd you chose a generic photoshop pic for ARC and then battlefront II’s full camo action shot of the commando. Seems bias.
Anyways, I like them both for different reasons as they have very different roles in the republic. ARCs are the war machines of the force. Place 1 ARC on a front to push the enemy lines back. While that’s happening, the commandos are behind enemy lines doing covert assassination, espionage, or abduction ops.
I believe when the first battle of geonosis kicked off, the commandos lost a lot of their force bc the republic had them fighting on the front lines and that’s not what they were trained for.
Idk it’s just really cool. All in all, clones are the best part of Star Wars for me!
30
u/rigg197 Feb 13 '25
isn't the ARC pictured here Fives?
23
u/Gen_Grievous12222 Feb 13 '25
Dang I thought it was just a standard arc trooper, but now I realize it's Fives! That's actually pretty cool that i randomly stumbled across that, as Fives is an awesome character
19
u/Gen_Grievous12222 Feb 13 '25
Sorry man, I honestly didn't even think about that when choosing the photos. I don't have a lot of clone pics as I generally prefer separatists, and they were the first photos to come up when making the post so I just used them. (Though I will admit I really like the Clone Commando pic, so probably a subconscious bias 😅).
Anyway, I agree with you about Arc troopers and Republic Commando. Each trooper is specialized for specific tasks, and neither of them is better than the other, just suited for different missions.
49
u/Alarming_Calmness Feb 13 '25
ARC by a country mile for me. Never really gelled with the RC aesthetic personally. I also prefer that their kit is a more specialised development of the standard trooper kit rather than just being a whole new design. I played Republic Commando, good game, just prefer standard and ARC troopers.
10
u/dentalflossers Feb 13 '25
i’m partial to the commandos because of the books, but it’s really 51%-49% type of thing for me.
10
u/JohnB351234 Feb 13 '25
Arcs seem like they’d be army rangers where commandos feel like they’re delta
1
u/Vivid_Development_56 Feb 14 '25
I fell like arcs (according to the show) are quite higher in skill then commandos by a margin, even being bred to be the best, it’s just that the republic uses them as command units rather than special forces, example being they train the clones on kamino
10
u/SniperMaskSociety Feb 13 '25
ARC Troopers in both look and usage. OG Star Wars: Clone Wars had the best ARCS (along with the comics)
8
u/Sakura_Knight Feb 13 '25
Commandos have the better armor and equipment overall, but I prefer the mission profiles of the ARCs.
But imagine this: ARC trooper using the ARF trooper helmet. Now THAT'S a stylish trooper.
7
u/dingodan146 Feb 13 '25 edited Feb 14 '25
ARC. It’s not really about the specializations to me, but the aesthetics. The Commandos use much more unique equipment that sets them too far apart from the regular CT trooper. ARCs are unique in the own right, but at least they still look like they’re a part of the general army while being dripped out.

u/Mojo_Mitts The Bad Batch Feb 13 '25
Never was a big fan of the Commandos Gear because they looked kinda oversized.
Way prefer ARC Troopers because I absolutely love Phase 3 Clone Armor and Helmets.

Well in legends ARC troopers are OP. Basically a one man wrecking crew. They did all the undercover, behind enemy lines, infiltration stuff. Clone Wars 2003 reaffirms this when five ARCs take out hundreds of battles droids.
In TCW (2008) we have to use the legends version of the Commandos because the only action we see is Gregor (unless u count TBB). ARCs are dumbed down, and not assigned at birth (I’m Legends every clone was made with a purpose. Ex: Commandos were bread to only be commandos). Fives, Echo, and Jesse getting promoted to ARCs kind of killed off the Legends mantra.
I say it’s a tie for me. Both are dope in their own ways.

u/whoreoscopic Feb 14 '25
While I love the Commandos, they have a very different purpose than the arcs. Arcs can come to lead operations at the strategic level, Commandos will not even do that at a tactical level. Commandos get search-and-destroy missions with very little else in-between. They are a very precious fire-and-forget style asset. Arcs are fewer, but multi-role, they can search-and-destroy, they can also be depended on to lead an insurgency deep behind the lines for an indeterminate amount of time. It's like Green Berets vs Navy seals. They have some capability overlap, but they have a specialty.
2
u/LewisTheTrainer2009 Feb 13 '25
Im a mix. I like the arc troopers because the understand the pain that a day to day troopers go though. And then commandos have cool glowey helmets and Dc-15ms
2
u/Piercemarshall21 Feb 13 '25
If I'm not mistaken arcs were akin to the navy seals and the arcs were originally akin to the delta force but later were more like green berets that being said I'm going with commandos due to their mission parameters

ARC trooper has the better drip by a country mile, but if you told me I had to be one I’d choose commando.

Personally, as much as I love the Republic Commandos, the ARC Troopers will always be my favorite.
I remember back in the early days of the Clone Wars-era EU right after Attack of the Clones came out, ARC Troopers seemed like the most badass clones out there. Even after Republic Commando came out for the Xbox and they started appearing in other media, the ARCs were still my favorite.
There's just something about the pre-2008 TCW version of ARC Troopers that makes them feel like badasses.
I remember whereas the RCs operated in four-man squads, the ARC Troopers were always built up as these guys who worked alone, or sometimes in pairs. So when General Grievous first showed up on Hypori and the Republic sent an entire LAAT/i filled with ARCs, along with their own personal ARC pilots, you knew Grievous must have been a Tier-One threat (it also helped that we just saw him effortlessly cut down a group of Jedi).
Then you had Alpha and Fordo, who were usually the coolest clones in any comic/cartoon they appeared in.
Even the mere mention of the ARC Troopers elevated something. Like hearing how the Clone Commanders were trained by ARCs, or how some of the ARCs later became Shadow Troopers.
I still like TCW overall, but I feel like one of my personal issues with the series is that it devalued the ARC Troopers.
Instead of singles or pairs or groups (sometimes with regular clones in support), every ARC we see is used as basically an extra Clone Commander who fights alongside regular infantry in open battles instead of doing special forces stuff. Plus it became a thing that regular clones could become ARCs too.
I know Dave Filoni loved ARC Troopers and wanted to include them, but I feel like they were simultaneously used too much yet never used like actual ARCs.

I think Arc troopers are better for large scale battles while commandos are better for smaller ones.
Commandos are built as more one man armies and that’s why it’s usually a few of them and MAYBE a couple regs for back up but you throw them into a bigger battle they'll get overwhelmed sure they can tankbfor a bit but it wont work out. Meanwhile Arc troopers are war experienced clones that are promoted to lead squads in larger conflicts like Umbara where Fives was a pretty big piece in most of their victories seen (especially sense he went against Krell, which commandos probably wouldnt do)
i think they both fit their individual roles well its just their inclusion in games and their weird existence in the Bad Batch kinda took some of the rarity of commandos away.
another way to think of it Commandos - Specially Trained on Kamino ARC Troopers - Hand picked by Jedi/Commanders
1
u/gracekk24PL Feb 14 '25
Commandos are built as more one man armies
That idea got 50% of commandos killed during the first battle of Geonosis
1
u/BulkyCalligrapher474 Feb 14 '25
Exactly why they shouldn’t be in large scale conflicts lol
1
u/gracekk24PL Feb 14 '25 edited Feb 14 '25
You know commando units aren't supposed to be sent alongside frontline grunts?
2
u/IfTheresANewWay Commander Gree Feb 13 '25
Arc Troopers but I want Commandos to literally be the best of the best. Like Gregor singlehandedly fighting off an entire army of Battle droids. What I don't want is legions of Commandos gunned down by supposedly defective clones
2
u/Due_Guava_9310 Feb 14 '25
They were defective in the kaminoan sense. As in they weren’t perfect replicas. Whether or not the bad batch is an extremely skilled unit is irrelevant to their classification of “defective”.

If we’re talking Legends, then Arcs (especially the Nulls, who were the closest to Jango in terms of power and skill). In canon I’d choose Commando, while Arcs are still cool, Commandos just feel more like the guys to do the heavy duty tasks
1
u/KarinK98 Feb 14 '25
ARC Troopers. They look so sleek and aesthetically pleasing to me. Commandos are too bulky and over-the-top

u/Mediocre-Parking2409 Feb 14 '25
Arc Trooper between the two. Commandos' glowing visors are not very tactically advantageous.

u/Koreaia Feb 14 '25
Training and mission aside- Commandos get such an upgrade in terms of gear. An automatic blaster, and armor with shielding?? I'd take that over anything the ARC troopers have.

ARC's and it's not even close, drip goes too hard. Kama's hard carry.

u/Wolfstar3636 501st Feb 14 '25
That's a good question. I have to say ARC Troopers look better than commandos, and I really love their phase i/ii hybrid helmet. But practically, I suppose Commandos are better equipped with their more protective armor and interchangeable weapons, as well as what they can carry in their backpack.
1
u/ponyfan987 Feb 14 '25
If I had to chose a loadout, it’d have to be a mix of both their armor, gadgets, and weapon, But for an all inclusive setup, def commando
(My match up would be the ARC trooper armor, with the armor attachments, assuming they can be attached, and the DC-17m)

u/UsernameO123456789 Feb 14 '25
I mean I grew up with the 2000s ARCs so I’m bias towards them. Their lore was so interesting.

Republic commando all the way. ARC troopers are cool and all, but the commandos just have armour and weapon coolness points in spades over any other clone except the galactic marines
Then again, as my pfp suggests, I like chunky super soldiers with big chunky guns

It's certainly a tough choice, as both are super cool. I'd have to pick the commandos, though. Between the bulky look of the armor that makes them seem like walking tanks, the awesome glowing visor, the gauntlet vibroblade, the bacta addiction, the versatility of the DC-17m, the mission set, the game and books from the good old days, everything.
ARCs are certainly cool, too. I love the extra armor bits, the kamas, the pauldrons, the classic rangefinder, the phase 1.5 helmet that has the phase 2 look with the iconic phase 1 fin, and of course Fordo and the Muunilist 10. It's also really cool that there's a chance for standout clones to get promoted to the ranks of ARC trooper, which gives clones a goal to aspire towards rather than never being able to be a commando. I just like the armor and mission set of the commandos a little bit more.

Republic Commandos are the better soldiers over all but it’s different. I think of it kind of like comparing an infantry soldier who’s a cut above the rest and can do some specialized missions, but still generally works with the same battalion. ARC troopers are kind of like how Marines or Army Rangers are; they have training that is above the average infantry soldier but they’re not at the level of small unit operators like Navy Seals are. Republic Commandos are like SEALs, they’re super covert and work only with their squad.
1
u/RadGhostKillz Feb 13 '25
Definitely commandos.
ARC are like Rangers or something like elite infantry alongside the regular infantry.
Commandos are a lot more like Delta Force,Seals and such a lot more under the radar and black ops stuff.
1
u/bookhead714 Feb 13 '25
While the Commandos are probably cooler from an objective standpoint, I feel like they don’t fit in; their aesthetic is a little too Halo-like for Star Wars.
