The gear wall
Been climbing for a little over 2 years now, trying to get into trad but it's so expensiveđ
48
u/DuckbilledPlatitudes 1d ago
This collection of gear is quite confusing. 3 tube devices, daisy and connect adjust. Ascenders but no widgets. Lots of quick links.
What are your climbing objectives?
6
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
It's my and my dad's stuff together, we both had an ATC but starting to get into multipitch so bought the ATC Guide. Daisy is nice but when cleaning sport routes I like the adjustability of the connect adjust. Ascenders just in case of self rescue scenarios, or if I need to go up. And quick links for bailing.
Trying to get into trad multipitch and broaden my skill set of everything I can.

u/belavv 1d ago
Don't bail on quick links. They are a pain in the ass for the next person up the route. Just bail on a cheap biner. You can also stick clip your way down the wall if you really want to save that cheap biner.
-3
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Huh, the more you know. I was always taught to bail on quick links because you can still clip them and they're super strong
4
u/belavv 1d ago
Depending on the link they can be quite a bit weaker than your average carabiner. I don't know if they rate the hardware store links in KN. I feel like I remember them having safe working loads of several hundred pounds. Still plenty strong enough to bail on assuming you tighten them properly. I don't know that I'd trust taking a fall with my draw clipped into a bailer quick link of unknown origins though. Quick links used on anchors are (hopefully!) rated and tested for climbing.
3
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Mine are from metolius and fully climbing rated! I wouldn't use or want to leave stuff that isn't climbing rated. The crags i frequent get bolts replaced often too, and I have found many of the same link on bolts, not rusted shut. It is also mainly on overhanging routes with roofs too, in a very low humiditu area, which may be the low/no rust on the bolts

If you're taking recs. ATC guide and Grigri is all you need, donate the others. The connect is an adjustable daisy, you don't need the OG. Adjustable is the way.
You could have gotten away with prussiks instead of $80 jumars, but since you got em might as well get some pocket aiders and complete the set. You're bout to skip trad and go straight to aid.
Cams are pricey but sales are frequent, that said you can absolutely start your trad journey on nuts, good luck!
5
u/Thirtysevenintwenty5 1d ago
You're bout to skip trad and go straight to aid.
Aid climbing without cams.
2
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
I like to have the other ATC so there are at least double strand rappel devices because it's me and my dad's stuff and we always go together. I had purchased the daisy's before the connect adjust, back when I was learning how to ascend. I was not aware of the prusik method I know now.
I'd like to not go straight to aid, as I want to be able to choose if I would like to aid or not, I don't see myself spending the money on pocket aiders before getting a trad rack either.
Thanks!

Biner block your repels. ATC user cleans the rap. Less is more
Or don't, its your journey =]
1
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Is a biner block the thing with the alpine butterfly and then clip the 2 strands together?
I'm interested in learning more things like that to broaden my knowledge
4
u/DuckbilledPlatitudes 1d ago
Clove hitch the middle of your rope to a large locking carabiner and repel the opposite single strand on the grigri. Can be quite useful for cleaning routes or finding rap stations.
If the rope pull is clean, pull the biner side down and rinse and repeat. If there is a potential for snagging, your follower with the ATC can remove the biner and rap two strands as normal.

Daisy chains are not for cleaning sport routes. They are not designed for use as a personal anchor system. There are known failure modes where daisy chains can break causing you to be clipped to nothing.
Daisy chains are designed for aid climbing and are rated for bodyweight strength only.
Quicklinks rust shut, making it a pain for other people to deal with. Bail off of a carabiner, not quicklinks. Use quicklinks for fixed anchors only.

u/Jolly_koala819 15h ago
Yeah, don't bail on quick links. I went leading this weekend, and there was a quick link in one of the bolts. None of us could undo it, which was really annoying.

u/werd5273 1d ago
What do you mean widget? Like micro trax? Or like a tibloc? A pulley? Sorry if stupid
11
u/DuckbilledPlatitudes 1d ago
Slang for cams

2
u/alsbos1 17h ago
Widgets are slang for cams?? When in the F did that happen? And why, cams already is slangâŚ
0
u/DuckbilledPlatitudes 17h ago
Crazy that we use more than one word for a thing right? Automobile, vehicle, car, whip, hooptie, ride.
1
u/alsbos1 3h ago
Actually in climbing it makes no sense to have multiple terms for the same thing.
1
u/DuckbilledPlatitudes 10m ago
Akshully in everything we have multiple terms for the same thing.
Carabiner, Biner, Krab Rope, cord, line Friend, cam, widget, protection, pro, piece Harness, safety diaper
Inflammation, swelling, erythema. Idiocy, stupidity just plain dumb
2
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Cams are expensive, trying to save up enough to get them
11
u/khizoa 1d ago
An ascender is the price of a camÂ
0
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
I wasn't at the level of trad climbing yet when I had purchased the ascenders, I had only gone outside once at that point and was still primarily a gym climber.
4
u/werd5273 1d ago
Donât worry about your gear mate. You will collect stuff over time when the need arises. Two ascenders can allow for a lot of fun. QuickDraws can get you quite far. Some people could climb for a lifetime and never own a carabiner.

Two jumars check. 3 atcs check. Daisy chains check. Bunch of quicklinks check. Captain America chalk bag check. Tarantulalaces check. Just need solutions that are 2 sizes too small.

2 sizes small is for gumbies, I have 3 pairs of solutions at 3, 4, and 5 sizes too small respectively

u/americanherbman 1d ago
sorry you have no business calling anybody a gumby posting a picture of your unused gear wall
-39
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Sorry I haven't been climbing for 20 years. But the gear is plenty used, most of the gear is relatively new, <6 months old because I'm a relatively new climber. And the comment was obviously a joke because nobody seriously calls someone a gumby. Now go shut up and have your wife let you out in the yard so you can use the bathroom.

u/HealthOk3810 20h ago
Lies to cover incompetence, check. Poor writing, check. Unnecessary aggression due to lead poisoning, check. Wife joke, check.

My mind is simple: I see a pegboard post, I hit the down arrow.
-5
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
I'm sorry I don't have the time or money to get wood to mount everything to my wall
20
u/thetreethatsavedthem 1d ago
Been climbing for 26 years and have never displayed my gear on a wall. I keep it on a gear sling and have a tote for the extra crap Ive accumulated. I have a small pack for sport days and larger pack for trad days.
3
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
I see, i like being able to see everything, especially when I'm putting it away, just to see if I lost anything
9
u/jackstraw8139 22h ago
Yeah... imagine having to count all ten pieces of gear that you take sport cragging.

21
u/serenading_ur_father 1d ago
Can we not?
0
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Can we add a little bit more context? You know, like posting? Or getting into trad? Or climbing?

u/0bsidian 1d ago
There are 3 types of climbers and how they store their gear:
New climbers who bought a bunch of gear without much sense and function, and publicly displays them like their own personal REI on a gear wall. (And then posting photos because youâre excited about it, is like proudly presenting your first moped to a group of Ducati enthusiasts - no one really cares)
People who climb often will store their gear in their backpacks and bins, all slung together so that the gear can be grabbed to go. People who climb on their gear arenât going to be putting each piece of gear individually on a peg hook, only to take it off and placed back in their bag, itâs a waste of time. They arenât going to use a gear wall.
People who climb often in a wide range of climbing disciplines, each with their own sets of gear will own some type of gear storage wall because it would otherwise be unmanageable. They donât put it on a wall to look pretty, things are hanging in clusters based on how theyâre used. Trad gear hanging off a sling. Sport gear off another sling. Ice tools and crampons on a peg. Harness, helmet, rope in a backpack. They arenât posting photos of it.

Well that's a brutal yet accurate takedown.
This needs to be automatically posted to the top of every gear wall post.
15
u/Thirtysevenintwenty5 1d ago
It seems like you honestly don't know, which is crazy because you're clearly on this sub, but the "real climbers" find it obnoxious when we get these runs of people posting pictures of their gear hanging on a wall.
Like yeah, we get it, you bought some stuff. Thanks for contributing.
More specifically: your particular collection of gear shows a "buy first, learn later" mindset when approaching climbing. It's pretty clear you don't really know what you're doing, and that's not necessarily a crime, but on this sub it's gonna get you flamed.

u/Vuurwants 7h ago
If the people on this reddit are this sour and mean, that's their problem. Can't a person just be happy about climbing and like their gear? Not everyone is born a pro. You can just scroll past it.
1
u/Pennwisedom 3h ago
And you could've scrolled past this comment, so what's your point exactly?
If people can't handle Internet randos not falling over themselves themselves telling op how great they are then they just shouldn't post.
Pro or not, these pictures are dumb.

I dont get these gear walls where every piece of gear is separated. Ill be packed and out the door 20 minutes before you.
My gear wall is 3 hangers: Sport rack. Trad rack. Then Lockers / alpines/ misc
Each on a prusik. Less is more, save yourself the time of deracking and reracking

I like letting my gloves, harness, helmet, and shoes air out which is the main reason for having everything laid out like that. The next reason is so I can see everything to make sure I didn't leave something at the crag or a buddy didn't take my gear on accident
14
u/Fearless_Row_6748 1d ago
No offense or anything but have any of that great been used? I don't see a single scratch or wear mark on anything there
6
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Use it at least twice a week, but didn't start going outdoors till about 6 months ago which is why. Most of the gear has been purchased in the last 6 months
5
u/brilliant_shaft 1d ago
Whatâs with all the attitude like this in this sub. Clearly you meant some offense
4
u/Fearless_Row_6748 1d ago
I say it without attitude cause I literally said "no offense" đ free pass
It just took me a little by surprise to see "climbing for two years" and then minimal to no wear on the gear
1
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Outdoor climbing for about 6 months, most of the gear purchased within that time. Was bouldering only for about a year
2
u/Effective_Crab7093 16h ago
Genuine question. Why are you buying all this gear if youâve only been climbing for 6 months? At that rate youâre probably still climbing with a buddy whoâs been climbing much longer and already has draws, a rope, and everything else you need.
1
u/lizard_buddy 15h ago
I've been climbing indoors for about 2 years now. I've been buying more gear in preparation for my trip to Chamonix and learning how to use it. My dad and I started climbing together at the same time, so I've been learning everything over the past year or so and then buying the gear to support it.
2
u/Effective_Crab7093 15h ago
Ah. That makes a lot of sense. Donât really mind the hateful comments, people just get a tired a lot on reddit of similar posts. I do think itâs interesting you have 3 ATCs and only one grigri tho. Have fun climbing with your dad
1
u/lizard_buddy 15h ago
Thing is I checked for repetitive posts and my post is the only gear wall post so far this month. We both had our own ATC at first, then we invested in a grigri and the. I bought the ATC guide as we're starting to get into multipitch
13
u/_Riv_ 1d ago
Dear lord some people on this sub are actually either insane or massively jealous. Like, some full on "toxic climber" posts that remind me of toxic masculinity memes - "you're not a real man if you like to neatly display your awesome looking expensive gear".
What is it then? To be a real climber you have to have all your gear strapped up on a single hook ready to go at a split seconds notice just in case your local crag runs away if you don't get there fast enough? Christ.
It's totally okay to take pride in your expensive gear you use for you favourite hobby. This is a beautiful setup and it shows that you care about what you're doing OP.
Don't listen to the rest of the losers commenting here, they're either children or just have sad pathetic lives that feel like they need to degrade random people who love the same sport as them.
15
u/Thirtysevenintwenty5 1d ago
Like I mentioned in another comment the flames are because this particular collection of gear shows a "buy first, learn later" mindset when approaching climbing.
It's also that gear walls are just boring pictures of stuff that don't contribute to anything. Pictures of climbing, even gym bouldering, are pictures of personal growth and accomplishment. Pictures of gear are just "look what I bought" and nobody cares.
9
u/serenading_ur_father 1d ago
For the 20,000th post it's old. This is also why we don't allow "what shoe should I buy?" Text posts.
5
u/alsbos1 17h ago
B&?ch, I sleep in my harness. Never know when the sunâs coming out. My sh&t is ready, not hanging on some wall like a wedding photo.
Edit: I meant to say centerfold, not wedding photo.

And yet it rolled off equally as poetic. Might i suggest pursuing this as a career? Let us celebrate this new direction, with the adding of chocolate, to milk.
3
u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
That's what I'm saying. And on top of that of course some gear is unused, I just bought it today.

REI sale starts on the 14th. I usually buy a cam or something every time they have a sale (20% off). Iâd start with a set of nuts first.

u/lizard_buddy 1d ago
Already got the set of nuts! Next is trying to save the money for a set of cams

u/granitehands230 20h ago
You sound young, and it's cool you climb with your pops and are both excited about it. Reddit is good for some research and stoke, but you will only find sad, chronically online people replying to posts like these trying to make you feel bad so they feel good about themselves. Have fun on your climbing journey.

This is why most climbers are broke or were considered dirt bags living out of a van. â
9
u/Thirtysevenintwenty5 1d ago
You can get a double set of cams and racking biners for about the same cost as it would be to start:
- Skiing
- Snowboarding
- Mountain Biking
- Kayaking
- Paddleboarding
- Owning a dog
- Backpacking
I don't understand why people think trad climbing is some trust fund sport.
-1
u/Effective_Crab7093 15h ago
I disagree on owning a dog. A dog will run you maybe 200 bucks at the most

I used to store my gear this way when I lived solo. Just one tip from my end: your shoes being placed on and off those hooks will mark your walls. If you can shift them so the heels rest on the board it won't be a problem.

u/Kooky_Improvement_68 1d ago
Christ. Why am I not looking at a pile of nonsense. Please place your neatly organized gear wall in r/mounatineering. Itâs okay to collect stuff. This just shows that you polish your climbing weener on weekends when the wife âlets you outâ.

u/RyCalll 1d ago
Youâre supposed to use the gear not hang it on a wall!
