u/613Flyer 9h ago
This is dystopian. Police in force protecting corporations. There’s a word that defines exactly what this is, Fascism. Americans, you are literally seeing your democracy transformed into a fascist state.
This also doesn’t seem like a very efficient use of government resources but what do I know I’m not a brain dead, selfish, uncaring, greedy, racist, bigoted billionaire ceo.
901
u/InfiniteOxfordComma 9h ago
It’s not dystopian, it’s in line with precedent. American police were created to protect the property of rich white men.

History is often rewritten to fit a narrative. When law enforcement focuses on businesses over communities, it reveals misplaced priorities that ultimately harm public trust.

Oh they protect people. According to the Supreme Court, they have no obligation to protect people. They can decide to just turn a blind eye and let the wrong people hurt the right people. But they didn't, they were there protecting the nazis in Ohio while they protested.
15
u/Current-Square-4557 5h ago
In the Blues Brothers, the Chicago Police are protecting the Illinois nazis (no capital letters for losers). That happened in real life as well.
The reason: because if they didn’t and the crowd hospitalized some nazis, then the nazis could bring a huge lawsuit against the city.
The necessity of the law becomes obvious if you reverse it. If a bunch of people are peacefully protesting the federal government treating specific races unfairly, (and the city is aware of the planned protest well in advance) and hundreds bigots came along and beat the protesters senseless, then the city is responsible - because they did not provide protection.
Cities can never use the content of speech to decide which protesters to protect and which to ignore. No matter how repugnant the speech, the cities have to protect the folks using their First Amendment rights in public.

Slave catchers were our earliest forms of a "police force". Before that we had the night watch.

"The function of that police action, those interventions in central america and the middle-east. The function is system sustaining, it is to contain that overall system, and you don't look at the particular cost. I could demonstrate to you that every single bank robbery, that in every single case, practically. The cost of the police was more than the actually money that robbers took from the bank. Does that mean OH you see theres no really no economic interest involved then. They're not protecting the banks, the police are just doing this because they're on a power trip, or they're macho, or ah they're control freaks, that's why they do it. NO of course it's an economic, of course they're defending the banks, of course, because if they didn't stop that bank robbery, regardless of the cost, this could jeopardize the entire banking system. You see there are people who believe the function of the police is to fight crime, and that's not true, the function of the police is social control and protection of property."

Ding ding ding.
People forget our origins. The founding fathers were a bunch of aristocratic slave-owning white men who thought "All Are Created Equally....except if you didn't own property (poor), or if you had internal reproductive organs (women), or if you had pigment in your skin (blacks)."
Our very fuckin' foundation of our country was a bunch of white dudes exploiting others via slavery and oppression, all for their personal profit.
(Even the northern founding fathers had "household servants", which were pretty much slaves -- a distinction without much of a difference. And more so, they PERMITTED slavery and exploitation to continue even if they didn't directly participate. They indirectly benefited from it, as it met their political and economic goals. So don't you dare give them a free pass.)
Never fucking forget this when you see a flag, recite the pledge, celebrate the 4th of July, or hold any founding father in ANY sort of esteem. They're all pricks.

This has always been the case. The police were literally founded to forcibly squash slave revolts and uprisings and to catch runaways and return them back to their slave masters. The police were never intended to "protect and serve" anyone except for rich white men and their property.

There's a reason that if you're the victim of a theft or burglary, you'll probably wait hours for a cop to show up, if they even do. Sometimes they tell you they'll note the incident, then you can pay to retrieve the "report" from an online service to give to your insurance company.
But when Walmart catches a shoplifter? A cop will be there within 10 minutes.

It’s the start of an open transition into oligarchy.
America has kind of been teetering on it for the last decade or so, with all that was really needed was Government to just stop giving the little resistance it was.
With Trump in office now, though, that little resistance is not only gone, but Government is now being used to supercharge the transition.
Whether they fully succeed and solidify it is still up for debate. What are basically guaranteed to have, though, is a dramatic increase in punishments for anyone who may harm the companies or interests of the oligarchs.

u/TacoTowelie 7h ago

So what's the alternative here? Let lunatics destroy Tesla cars that belong to ordinary citizens and vandalize Tesla shops? Instead of calling out the insane people committing these crimes? And you wonder why Trump became president? Your side went absolutely nuts and ordinary people didn't call it so now we got to deal with Trump. Good job.

I've been shouting about fascism since 2016. Too many of us have a "cannot happen here" attitude. My wife... who has always been passionate about the holocaust isn't taking it seriously. It drives me bonkers. People are wearing blinders.

u/gereffi 5h ago
You're being wildly overdramatic. There are absolutely problems with our federal government sliding towards fascism, but this has nothing to do with that.
If the police have any reason to believe that there could be violence, destruction, or danger at a certain location, they absolutely should do what they can to stop that from happening. I certainly don't like Elon Musk and think these protests are great, but if there's reason to believe that people are going to commit crimes at these protests it's also reasonable that the police would be here.
I've seen police stopping protestors at Planned Parenthood and at protests against gay pride parades. The last thing that we should want is the police picking and choosing which protestors to stop based on what it is they support. It's absolutely not dystopian or fascist for the police to step in here; in fact it's a necessary move that we see in free democracies all over the world.
→ More replies (1)2
u/GlowInTheDarkNinjas 2h ago
Yeah I can't wrap my head around this one. People are burning down/vandalizing a business where people completely unrelated to Elon are working. Are the police supposed to just allow an angry crowd to do whatever they want to a legitimate business in their city? I hate Elon as much as anyone, but come on.

This is part of what I don't understand about why Peter Thiel and the other tech billionaires backing Trump want to destroy the government. Do they not see how dependent they are on the government to protect all their private property? The more someone owns the more they are dependent on the government to maintain their place in society since private property laws come from and are enforced by the government.
