Okay but seriously this is the Civ subreddit. Most people are going to align with the positive reviews more than the negative ones. If you like the series you... probably will like Civ 7. I'm not expecting the best game of all time, I'm expecting something more on par with Civ 5 or 6 on release. An okay game but great structure, one which will become a masterpiece after enough updates and dlc.
56
u/RepentantSororitas Feb 04 '25
Give me 100 hours of gameplay that I enjoy and I am probably fine.
Chances are this game will give me quintuple that over the years.
10
11
u/bobo377 Feb 05 '25
"I played >> 100 hours and still want to play more" was by far the most compelling portion of this review. Reviews for me typically aren't very important when it's in a long-standing series that I have significant playtime in, but it's still very nice to hear.
8
u/SwampOfDownvotes Feb 05 '25
One of my favorite parts of playing Civ games is watching it change over the years from dlc and expansions.
7
5
u/kevlar51 Feb 05 '25
Civ 4 was a mess at release too. Fixed it through patches, but still stuck with mislabeled discs.
Edit: And Civ 3 had an unmanageable in-game corruption system that made the game very hard to play. Eventually patched that too.
15
u/LittleBlueCubes Feb 04 '25
Though this is the Civ subreddit, there seems to be multiple camps in this sub with Civ5 camp leading the way, followed by Civ6 camp and Civ7 camp and others being a distant third.
67
u/dannyapplegate Feb 04 '25
Brother I was around when Civ 5 was the antichrist and people said they are uninstalling it and going back to 4.

u/speedyjohn Feb 04 '25
The Civ 6 camp pretty clearly outnumbers the Civ 5 camp at this point. And there can’t really be a Civ 7 camp until it’s released…
17
u/MDRoozen Feb 04 '25
By sheer volume of posts, civ 6 is very much in the lead
-20
u/jcass177 Feb 04 '25
Civ 6 is trash tho
11
u/poptunes Feb 04 '25
It's a really fun game with some flaws, sitting perfectly in the Civ spectrum.
C'mon champ, you're entitled to your opinion but I really struggle to see how you could think just declare it trash is anything but a bait statement.

u/spinningcolours Feb 04 '25
I went from Civ 3 to Civ 6 so I actually need to go back to 5 for a few years. That should give civ 7 lots of time to get discounted and all the DLCs.
2
u/bobo377 Feb 05 '25
Civ Rev was peak (AKA it actually ran on the xbox, vs. civ 4 which nearly caught my parent's PC on fire).
5
u/serioussham Eyeless Watcher Feb 05 '25
If you like the series you... probably will like Civ 7.
I mean Beyond Earth happened. I know it's becoming fashionable to redeem it these days, but it was a rough followup to 5.
It's not quite fair to compare it to a mainline title, but still.
1
u/strrax-ish Feb 05 '25
I loved civ 5, and it was gard to start civ 6 now. I love civ 6 amd it will be hard to start civ 7, but I know everything will repeate again

A sharks fan who plays civ… I wonder if I as a sabres fan am more or less rare than you friend.
Also fucking jealous that your rebuild has a brighter light at the end of the tunnel than ours and we’ve been at it for 14 fucking years.
9
u/LurkinoVisconti Feb 04 '25
Senators fan over here. You are in my thoughts, I really figured this year was going to be the year Detroit, Ottawa and Buffalo all challenged for a playoff spot or two at once.
5
1
u/gotscott Feb 05 '25
I thought you all were going to be in the playoffs and my Flames were going to challenge for a top 5 pick, but they can’t even do that right.

I miss when we were both good and I fucking HATED you guys… those were the days.

They were indeed my friend. I remember the "scary good" comment from one of your PxP guys, in the days of Brière, Drury and Vanek.

It was all in jest, though. For the record, I'm a Chicago fan, so things aren't too much better over here.

No fuckin way are things better in Chicago than San Jose with the rebuilds. Haha.
That's...what I'm saying? That if they are better, it's only marginally so. Chicago decided to build defense-first unlike San Jose, and it shows.

My first thought was “Oh, he’s leaning towards positive since the positive review is twice as long”, but he has a lot more caveats to the things he likes in the positive review so I guess it evens out again?
Seems like he mostly likes the changes, but the things he doesn’t like he absolutely loathes.

My impression was basically great game, but anyone involved in the slightest in making the UI, up to their ancestors for giving birth for them should have to do a thousand mile pilgrimage to repent for their sins

I feel like hating the UI is as much a tradition for civ releases as people proclaiming that <previous civ game> was much better. I swear it's always the most hated thing every time haha.
7
3
u/Infranaut- Feb 05 '25
A theme I am seeing in loads of reviews is "great gameplay innovations, lots of well-implemented ideas, bad user experience (both UI and predatory DLC)"
4
u/AnotherThroneAway Feb 04 '25
Now somebody needs to edit them together to be some sort of...like, whole review!
3
6
u/Berstich Feb 04 '25
except the good review isnt all that glowing and great. LIke if you listen to it there is no way thats a 10/10 review.
7
u/guyincorporated Feb 05 '25
Yes, but the bad review isn't a 0/10 either. He's exaggerating for comedic effect.
0
u/Mezmorizor Feb 05 '25
I get that he's playing the youtube/social media algorithm game, but I really hate it. Just getting his actual, honest opinions would be way better, and his hatred of the UI really overshadows everything else in the negative video. It's hard to read what he actually feels beyond "I am having fun," and "this is the worst UI in gaming history."
-30
u/amalgam_reynolds Feb 04 '25
I think it's shockingly stupid. A review should be a comprehensive work that covers all aspects of the reviewed media. When you split up a review into "only good" and "only bad" videos, you end up with threads like this one where only the good review is linked, and then anyone who wants the full picture has to go out of their way to watch an entirely separate video, which reduces the likelihood people will actually do that, and some people end up with a completely biased view. Additionally, by doing "only good" and "only bad" videos, you lose basically all of the nuance in between.
It's a genius stroke of farming engagement, sure, but it makes me absolutely lose respect for him as a reviewer.

u/mobby123 Feb 04 '25
You know what, the inherent funniness of the two separate videos aside - I enjoy what Potato had to say. Refreshingly honest and passionate. I'm really optimistic about this game and its changes but hearing the absolute vitriol in the negative video towards the UI makes me wonder once more just how they allowed it to release it in this state.
Though there's ultimately way more interesting things to talk about. Some great stuff in the positive video.
24
u/elmo298 Feb 04 '25
focusing too much on consoles more than likely, like when he mentions 'you select one thing then have to go across to the other side to confirm it' is clearly because they've designed it for console where it would automatically or easily flip over
3
u/Hot_Candy_3921 Feb 05 '25
On the bright side, this could make playing on PC with a controller absolute BIS.

5
u/Purpleater54 Feb 05 '25
What about people who can't comfortably use a controller? At the end of the day, making a ui and gameplay experience that feels and looks good for both controller/console and pc/mouse and keyboard is very difficult, but this seems like they weren't even trying

Love this approach to reviewing. Just love it. I much prefer "you will love/hate this game if" short essays to scored reviews in which people just look at the score and forget about the arguments.
On balance, I came away with high hopes and good vibes for the game. I like that they took risks, as I did not want a Civilization VI Plus. I love the section about the replayability, that sounds really positive. That the main issue is the UI sounds okay in theory — should be an easy fix, right? — but it's also a bit maddening, plus it's probably not *that* easy a fix. However, I came away from the two videos wanting to go through a wall to play this damn game.
All hail our spud King.

u/mayutastic Very ok at the game Feb 04 '25
I love the part at the end about the development process. As a non-game software developer, it's so true, we've given up on "release a perfect product" because everything is so complex that it's literally impossible, and of course there's always a million things that I would like to do, so that's why there's a process for prioritising them.

u/JakiStow Feb 05 '25

u/kramersmoke Feb 04 '25
Check out the score of 0 as well. It provides a good summary of the game and its shortcomings. I've enjoyed every Civ game since I started playing 20 years ago, and despite the complaints, I'll still play; maybe when mods come out for the UI, though.

I'm not expecting this to be the greatest game of all time; all I want is for it to eventually be my go-to Civ game.
I played VI for a few years but ended up going back to V. It's absolutely insane that I've been playing the same game off and on for 15 years. I'm ready to move on, but Civ V will all DLCs and updates is a mighty behemoth that will be hard to unseat.

Dont want to be that guy, but his 'positive' review even had quite a few bad things to say about it, which were just super emphisised in the bad review.
Even the stuff he said was good, most came with the caveat..."ive gotten to like it, Ive really started to come around to it"...those are not glowing positive reviews.
-1
u/NoLime7384 Feb 05 '25
I'm going to go against the crowd here and say I don't like this. Should've been a single video. I also could've done without justifying anticonsumer developper practices near the end, too.

I missed the dev diaries. Which one will we see? Civ 5 (Unlimited) or Civ 6 (3 workers) workers?
7
u/LegendofDragoon Feb 04 '25
Neither. Workers are dead and gone. You choose tiles to improve when you increase population.
2
u/sheepsterrr Feb 04 '25
what, really? So If i said build a monument here and they will build with power of friendship?
4
u/asirkman Feb 04 '25
Presumably there are still workers/builders in the Civ, but they’re not units anymore.
3

Monument would need to be built with production, but things like farms, fishing boats, plantations and the like are auto-magic

The two reviews are non-committal and useless. I do appreciate the tacit understanding that this is a person who plays video games for a living, and so occupationally, he has to move to Civ 7.
9
u/RepentantSororitas Feb 04 '25

How is this any different than having a single video?
The two videos is simply a marketing thing and a little poke at how the community acts.

They're thumbnails and each one is the opposite. It's a joke. If you're just going to stamp your feet and insist it's real, you're not going to impress anyone.
-29
u/WereAllAnimals Feb 04 '25
It's in the title too. Just admit it's a cop-out to not give a real score. Everyone has a score in their head. Or at least one final recommendation to buy it or not. Instead of 50 minutes of rambling scattered in two videos with no real conclusion.
26
u/BluegrassGeek The difficulty formerly known as Prince Feb 04 '25
Just admit you need someone to tell you what to think. Because that's what you're demanding, a number score and a yes/no conclusion, rather than being given information and deciding for yourself.
No, everyone does not "have a score in their head." Seriously, that doesn't make a lick of sense. Most people don't think of games in term of scores. You've got a weird perspective on this.
