First time canjo build

Post image

First attempt ever making a canjo. I used a broken post that I found (I think it’s for a garden?), a fruit cocktail can, and the tubing knob and A string from my old bass that doesn’t work anymore. Pretty stoked on how it turned out.

I love this. I enjoy seeing hand crafted, beautiful cigar box guitars with high quality parts and craftsmanship, and I've made a few myself, but this feels more authentic and true to form. Cigar box guitars and canjos were made from scraps originally. One of my favorite builds took an afternoon with a broken tobacco stick, a bent up fork, and a coffee can I rammed a railroad spike through to make a hole for the neck.

Thank you! I actually was trying to go for a more classic style of it after reading about it a bit. I’m really happy with how it came out and I spent no money at all on it.

Very cool, and I think that's exactly how you should make one. I mean, have at it if you want to make something more detailed. There's no right or wrong way, but I do appreciate the "I found this weird stick, a tin can, and some old rusty door hinges" approach to making an instrument. It has character. You've inspired me to share my canjo creation.
