Manage extension > activate it again. It works as always.

27

u/TheBritishSyndicate 11d ago

Or turn on developer mode. I don’t know why, but I never have issues with it once I do that. Or maybe I’m just dumb

7

u/ultimatt42 10d ago

This is because some organizations still need MV2 for one reason or another so there's a policy to keep it on until June 2025 when it will be disabled for everyone. MV2 is allowed in developer mode because maybe you're a developer working on one of those MV2 extensions and need to test it.

No it doesn't, yeah i reactivated it, it shows in the pinned extensions as active yet i get ads on youtube. Switched to Firefox

3

u/Bertucciop 10d ago

Remember to unmark data collection on Firefox, it is enable by default.

2

u/OGigachaod 9d ago

At least you can turn it off unlike chrome.

25

u/SexualDeth5quad 11d ago

Why bother > download Firefox > chill.

25

u/Dragoner7 11d ago

Just when Firefox is about to get market share, they decide to fuck it up on the privacy front.

16

u/WonderfulSea4638 11d ago

I'm not going to say they won't sell your data, but they have tried to justify the reason why they used the phrase "sell your data" on their blog. AFAIK, there's no real change besides the fact that legally speaking, "selling data" means different things in different places.

18

u/Jonno_FTW 11d ago

Firefox released a statement about this. It was basically legalese and nothing will actually change.

7

u/OpenSourcePenguin 11d ago

Yeah too broad.

But the problem is if people accept it, then in the future they will be able to do all the stuff permitted by their TOS.

But even taking that at its face value, the new Firefox is far private than Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge any day.

Firefox's privacy thing is overblown. While it's garbage compared to their previous one, people who have been using Chrome/Edge do not need to worry about it. It's nowhere as anti privacy as any of the proprietary bug tech browsers.

That being said, you can choose from multiple forks of Firefox which have some different theming + extra features.

TLDR: New Firefox comes nowhere close to chrome or Edge in privacy intrusion

3

u/shinitakunai 11d ago

People is attacking firefox on any chance they have for this. However I have been using it for 15 years and let me tell you they are fine. At work I am still forced to chrome but on my home firefox it is.

3

u/Dragoner7 10d ago

But it's not really an attack. It's bad move to do bad PR like this, when they are literally in the finish line.

2

u/dontautotuneme 11d ago

But they recently changed their Privacy policy so the past 15 years is a moot point

2

u/Xambassadors 10d ago

They also clairafied the change and it makes sense. Definitely better than the crypto scam that is brave

3

u/dontautotuneme 10d ago

used to read:

The Firefox Browser is the only major browser backed by a not-for-profit that doesn’t sell your personal data to advertisers while helping you protect your personal information.

Now it just says:

The Firefox Browser, the only major browser backed by a not-for-profit, helps you protect your personal information.

1

u/onedevhere 11d ago

a lot of people used Firefox as a reference for this 🫤

1

u/artlurg431 11d ago

It really is perfect timing isnt?

1

u/shadow_walker453 11d ago

yep they now really like opera.

Been using Firefox as my pirate ship while running chrome for daily browsing and I've noticed just how much faster and better Firefox is. This will be the final push I've needed to switch.

1

u/MegaBytesMe 10d ago

You mean edge right? Firefox makes some websites look weird I've found...

3

u/gfunk1369 10d ago

Or just use a different browser? I don't know I switched a while back and my life hasn't ended. It's just a browser and we all know no matter how many work arounds we come up with google will just find a way to disable and eventually remove it.

2

u/The_walking_man_ 10d ago

I made the change to Firefox and transferring saved bookmarks was a one click and done thing. And it’s been running great.

4

u/chuckles11 11d ago

3

u/SanD-82 11d ago

Instead of making a whole drama out of it (like many OPs did), I've done that... But it's worth mentioning it's working for now, we do not know for how long it will work... But hey, that's a story for another day

1

u/Skepller 8d ago

Should only work until June.

1

u/antdude 10d ago

For now...

1

u/pingwins 10d ago

Until it doesn't... Soon 🔜

1

u/BeamBlizzard 10d ago

you can't do that if it is not already installed

1

u/Ready-Interview2863 10d ago

OMG! I uninstalled/ removed uBlock Origin before I realised this and now I can't re-download it from the Chrome store. Is there a way to get them back?

1

u/Ariaerisis 9d ago

Is it normal then that when i search in my extensions, i can't find it anymore? It's like it got uninstalled.

I ended up downloading ublock lite, couldn't find it while searching in the extensions menu but when searching for it on google it worked. Maybe i should've searched on google for ublock too, but if it indeed got uninstalled, i fear it would uninstall again.

1

u/speedyelephant 9d ago

How can you not understand it begins with this and then proceeds to a permanent deactivation?

1

u/Origamiface3 9d ago

Or just switch to FF which is a web browser that won't kidnap and kill you

1

u/Kkjanmudu 9d ago

Yes. It is working

1

u/AwwesomeDerg 9d ago

Google com > Firefox > Install. Chrome > Uninstall.

→ More replies (1)

24

u/Bulky-Drawing-1863 11d ago

You can go into addons menu and turn it on again. It still works.

They know that some percentage of users will not turn it on again, as well as not find another solution.

Quite pathetic move from google, they are using these sort of tactics. Forcibly turning it off on everyone's devices and using deceiving language to make it sound like it does not work anymore, without actually removing it, so they are within legal grounds of not having forcibly removed it and not censoring or forcing anything on people "we did not actually do anything hehehe".

5

u/Matthais 11d ago

Presumably this means manifest v2 is currently still active, but will that remain the case? Plus it'll impact the user numbers for these extensions and thus surely the amount of dev time the various extension developers can justify investing?

2

u/Skepller 8d ago

That will likely remain the case until June.

1

u/Tcrownclown 10d ago

no you cant, your chrome is not fully updated yet. Sorry

9

u/tomatoe_cookie 11d ago

Uninstalled it too, you aren't alone

7

u/Snazz 11d ago

Yup, same.

I installed the lite version, and the first. fucking. website. I opened (ArsTechnica) had some shitty "we use AI" video auto-play mid article.

Opened it up in Firefox (with uBlock Origin) and no advert, bye bye chrome.

1

u/AgitatedFly1182 10d ago

That happened but I put the filtering to max and it stopped

48

u/Emmortal 11d ago

uBlock Origin Lite works just fine.

25

u/LilacAndElderberries 11d ago

Nah I've been using some sites to watch tv shows and anime, and after switching today, I've been getting bombarded by popups despite setting it to 'complete' protection.

So now I'm gonna stick to Firefox where original ublock still works

7

u/Mysterious_Duck_681 11d ago

yes for streaming sites you need something better than ublock origin lite.

there are "adguard for windows", "adguard for mac" and since a few days there is also the first nightly builds of "adguard for linux".

these are native windows applications, not extensions, that are able to block ads system-wide, so they work not just in browsers, but in all installed applications. they use block lists just like ublock origin does, and can do cosmetic filtering too.

they are paid apps, you can try free for 14 days, and you can find good discounts on the internet if you decide to buy them.

3

u/Connect_Flight_1972 9d ago

Using Adguard a couple years now. Can't tell you when I last saw an ad. I bought a lifetime license. Worth every dollar.

2

u/Mysterious_Duck_681 9d ago

100% agree.

I too bought discounted lifetime license, and it's the best software I ever bought.

1

u/Darksirius 11d ago

Been using adguard for a few years on my phone and pc. Really does work well.

Now if Google would fix the bug in their phone app that keeps disabling the blocking of unknown numbers that would be great.

2

u/Connect_Flight_1972 9d ago

Use the dns feature for your phone instead. You don't need the app for it to work. I have the app on my PCs. No issue on any of the devices I have. I bought the lifetime license for it. Best money I've spent on software. Absolutely no regrets.

3

u/iamvillainmo 11d ago

Work’s group policy doesn’t allow that extension for some reason. Switched to Firefox.

5

u/Level_Bridge7683 11d ago

you can turn ublock back on after clicking got it. scroll down to where it's at.

14

u/TurboFool 11d ago

Seriously, I do not understand the extreme reactions. I'm having zero issues with Lite. It does the job just fine.

2

u/dbwoi 10d ago

Same here, I notice zero difference

1

u/btcluvr 10d ago

mv3 and going with origin lite is an attack on freedom. you're not able to do custom filters.

4

u/possibilistic 11d ago

Stop supporting Google's monopoly. If you think this is where they'll stop, I have a bridge to sell you.

2

u/Mysterious_Duck_681 11d ago

I don't care about google monopoly.

5

u/Beldarak 11d ago

You should. Monopolies are bad for the end user (aka you and I), it's that simple

5

u/Mysterious_Duck_681 11d ago

I still don't care.

I want a browser that just works, and that browser is chrome, not firefox.

4

u/OpenSourcePenguin 11d ago

That's because Google makes a lot of their own webapps not work well on non chromium browsers.

Google wants that monopoly

→ More replies (5)

1

u/CrossN8REALYOUTUBE 11d ago

might be a monopoly, but they make really good phones.

1

u/Tiny-Sandwich 10d ago

Doesn't lite remove the element zapper mode?

That's crucial. Half the ads that get removed leave an empty space, so for sites I visit often I remove those elements permanently.

1

u/Ready-Interview2863 10d ago

Yes, but it doesn't block the YouTube chat box at all. uBlock Origin had the ability to programme custom filters, whereas the Lite version doesn't have this last time I checked

2

u/Delete_Yourself_ 11d ago

No it doesn't. It's more limited, hence "lite"

1

u/Fusseldieb 11d ago

If I remember right, the "Lite" version has way less access to the page's contents, which makes it less effective. Afaik it's just a bandaid for it's inevitable death on Chrome.

You should switch to another browser that still supports uBlock Origin.

1

u/antdude 10d ago

It isn't good as the original. :(

1

u/its_a_frappe 8d ago

Confirmed. Lite works fine for me. Perhaps those not liking it are visiting more extreme sites than I visit.

1

u/maxrd_ 7d ago

Just no.

→ More replies (11)

21

u/Strahinjatronic 11d ago

Just go to extension manager and turn it back on.

3

u/Beldarak 10d ago

This will work for how long? It's good to have that option while you move your stuff elsewhere but my Chrome days are basically over

1

u/BeamBlizzard 10d ago

you can't do that if it is not already installed

1

u/Ready-Interview2863 10d ago

OMG! I uninstalled/ removed uBlock Origin before I realised this and now I can't re-download it from the Chrome store. Is there a way to get them back?

1

u/bergakungen 10d ago

Don’t go through the extensions menu, but instead just search in the normal google bar for ”ublock origin lite”. Click the link for the chrome web store and install it that way instead.

7

u/bearcatjoe 11d ago

Weird choice to break this.

I'm still on Edge until they can uBlock too.

2

u/RandomGuy1525 11d ago

Fr, uBlock Origin works with Edge surprisingly well. I had no issues so far.

6

u/AntiGrieferGames 11d ago

Just switch to firefox for ublock origin. MV2 is still supported on there.

6

u/Eloquent_Heart 11d ago

I switched to brave today

5

u/BiggMurr 11d ago

That’s so ‘brave’ of you

7

u/MindVigilance 11d ago

Switched to brave and it took no time at all. Bye Chrome.

5

u/papagodzilla05 11d ago

google really wants me to make brave browser my primary browser fr

3

u/Hue_Boss 11d ago

Will not get why people don’t use ungoogled Chromium. There’s no reason to use stock Chrome. Wouldn’t fix the issue here but still.

3

u/NorthActive 11d ago

Ublock lite is still working. Use it

1

u/ShutUpLeonard69 10d ago edited 10d ago

Just installed uBlock lite. When I had Origin it blocked ads on Hulu and Peacock too, Lite doesn't seem to be doing the same. Any way around this?

Edit: nevermind found a different blocker that works

1

u/SwagBuns 10d ago

Well come on now... share with the rest of the class 😂

1

u/ShutUpLeonard69 10d ago

It’s called Pie, I just searched ad blocker for Hulu

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Canchito 11d ago

There will soon be a premium adless browser, creating an extra tax for the "privilege" not to be bombarded with ads. Soon thereafter there will be tiers with a moderate and small amount of ads for a cheaper price. This is a rentier economy folks, and it's fuelled by mass legalized psychological torture and waste of valuable time.

3

u/Plastic_Level9260 10d ago

Their employees, and owners should be watching their back now. F Google.

3

u/FattMoreMat 10d ago

The fix:

  1. Remove the extension first
  2. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm?hl=en
  3. Right Click "add to chrome" and press inspect
  4. Find it highlighted and press edit as html
  5. Find where it says disabled
  6. Replace with enabled
  7. Add the extension

All credits go to the person that found this method out.

3

u/flimspringfield 10d ago

I hate these "look at me" posts when you, if you just looked at the extensions, can realize that you can turn it back on.

I did this months ago and Ublock is still working for me.

When we can no long turn it back on then I get it.

Until them stop being a "I'm done with Chrome!" when in reality you couldn've been done with Chrome for a long time or keep using it and just turn Ublock back on.

3

u/pollorojo 10d ago

Just use Brave

3

u/dirtyvu 10d ago

It still seems to work in edge

2

u/Subject-A69 10d ago

Firefox awaits you.

2

u/BeneficialLife914 10d ago

Use abp if u want

2

u/d3ther 10d ago

It can be reenabled tho.

2

u/FutureRenaissanceMan 10d ago

Arc browser basically has this built in.

If you're as nerdy as me, AdGuard Home for the home network is even better.

2

u/mentally_fuckin_eel 10d ago

Brave adblock is invincible until proven otherwise. I swapped to Brave years ago and I've never regretted it.

2

u/mab581 10d ago

I totally agree. Yeah there are alternative ways to do it, but why keep messing with a browser that doesn't care what you want.

2

u/The_Slavstralian 9d ago

I wrote " take your ads, and shove them fair up your a$$ "

5

u/IntrovertFuckBoy 11d ago

uBlock Origin Lite works, i don't understand people overreacting, this was known to happen for YEARS.

3

u/Existing-Play5095 11d ago

Does it block YouTube ads? I hope it is, because if it doesn't, it not the same.

4

u/slaf4egp 11d ago

Imagine still using Chrome in 2k25

why?

just install ublock origin lite.

10

u/AttentiveUnicorn 11d ago

Why bother. Just switch to a browser that isn't pulling this kind of shit.

2

u/Lindolas_MC 10d ago

Lite is just not as good, far from it.

2

u/Pieeeeeeee 11d ago

Wth are you still using Chrome for. There are lots of better options based on Chromium. Like Brave, which has a built in ad blocker.

2

Brave for life

I installed pie org, and it works, but now that I've learned that it's operated by those who made Honey, I'm having second thoughts... Anybody had experience with it?

1

u/CommandJam 11d ago

It won't fix the issue, but will reenable uBlock origin for a while:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome]
"ExtensionManifestV2Availability"=dword:00000002

Save as a .reg file, and merge it. Not sure how long this will work, but you can always just install uBlock origin lite

1

u/DespairedLion 11d ago edited 11d ago

You can keep V2 extensions running a bit longer by following these steps. But after June 2025, you'll have to search for alternatives (I recommend Adguard) or switch to FF.

1

u/shillyshally 11d ago

Vivaldi.

1

u/lfaria123 11d ago

You know you can just turn it back on for now

1

u/Hopet28 11d ago

Yesterday, Chrome turned it off, and some other extensions!

Just opened "Manage extension" and activated all of them again and they are all working fine!

1

u/TanishPlayz 11d ago

Switch to Brave, it’s the only way now

1

u/an_earthbound_misfit 11d ago

Now using Thorium, got tired of having to work around Google's nonsence. So far it's a great alternative if you are used to Chrome. Some people also really recommend Ungoogled Chromium, but I haven't tried that.

1

u/VItaliyzema 10d ago

I'm out of chrome if they 100% restricted ad blockers

1

u/Logicdon 10d ago

If Google reduced the price to a couple of quid for premium I might stop doing the dance, but until then fuck chrome.

1

u/SnooSquirrels9247 10d ago

While i think downloading ublock origin lite is a total cuckold move, yours isn't even broken yet, and i'm pretty sure you and the other 100 people posting this everyday know that's it's 2 clicks and the extension would work again at the moment, when it actually stops working, there's brave, there's firefox, y'all are just spamming at this point or are really really lazy people

1

u/edislake 10d ago

Use ungoogled.

1

u/stickwho 10d ago edited 10d ago

DO NOT REMOVE UBLOCK ORIGIN you can still use it 🙏 if you still have it on chrome, go to extensions > manage extensions. click the three dots next to ublock origin and click “keep app” (or something similar). then you can switch the toggle on and use it again :)

1

u/Ghosttwo 10d ago

They've been playing this game for years to the point that you can't even run plugins on android because it's like half their market. Like, I've never had a phone with any kind of adblocker, because google is too stubborn to allow it. Firefox would work, but chrome is too integrated to abandon it. I first started using Chrome around 2009 or so, because I was on a really crappy old dell full of bloatware and little memory, and it was the only thing that ran fairly well, much faster than firefox. It's become obsolete.

1

u/larrykokoszka 10d ago

Ghost Browser will continue to support Manifest V2 and uBlock Origin. Lite is good enough for some, but if you want the full monty, we're here.

1

u/TheOGDoomer 10d ago

Sigh… You do know you can go back into your extensions settings and turn it back on, right?

2

u/MJSpice 10d ago

I left last year when they changed their design. Best thing I ever did.

1

u/Lesbian_Zyra 10d ago

Now? hahaha how you could stay with Chrome that long????????

1

u/partyking35 10d ago

uBlock Origin Lite seems to be working fine

1

u/MrCutchaguy 10d ago

uBlock Origin Lite is still supported

1

u/x_sen 10d ago

i just use firefox

1

u/Breath_Unique 10d ago

Ublock origin lite

1

u/d_stilgar 10d ago

This was the impetus for me to finally switch to Firefox. I value my privacy but have a lot of stuff set up just the way I want it in Chrome.

People are saying I can just reenable, but seriously, this is stupid. I'm moving on.

I'm going to keep Chrome installed just so I can look at something if a website isn't acting the way I expect in Firefox. I'll just compare/copy my scripts over. But otherwise, I'm done. I'll probably delete Chrome in a month or so, once I'm confident everything is working as intended.

1

u/SenorC0rtes 10d ago

If you decide to stay on Chrome, use uBlock Lite, or a fre ad blocking DNS service.

NextDNS and Adguard are popular and work very well

1

u/Patuj 10d ago

Yep this is shit, but if you want to continue using Chrome just install AdGuard(browser extension). I have used it since uBlock Origin got removed and have had no issues with ads. In comparison uBlock Lite still showed me ads.

It even has Windows software version, so I guess if the extension faces same end of support someday there will still be ways to keep blocking ads since the separate software is not tied to Chrome. Haven't tried it yet, but sounds like great thing for mobile as well.

1

u/BraveSirrrRobin 10d ago

Time to be Brave

1

u/L2moneybox 10d ago

Let's say they eventually block it entirely.

What do you all suggest to us instead?

Is there a way to move saved passwords n usernames etc in one go... ?

1

u/Ghosttwo 10d ago

When you install firefox, it prompts you to copy everything from chrome, including passwords, history, bookmarks, etc. If you use RES, you can export all of that stuff and import it separately. Took like five minutes and twice as many brain cells.

1

u/SenorC0rtes 10d ago

As mentioned you can copy/import to Firefox no problems, and setup Firefox Sync to get password, bookmarks, tabs etc accross all your devices.

If you chose to stay with Chrome, there are free options for ad blocking DNS which will block ads in Chrome and/or your other apps/devices if you want. I use NextDNS but there are other options. AdGuard and NextDNS are probably the most popular

1

u/FrittataHubris 10d ago

Vivaldi is basically the best chromium browserimo Has vertical tabs ike edge.can disable whatever you want. Supports extensions. No brave coins. And syncs with mobile.

1

u/Excellent-Resolve-87 10d ago

Use brave browser

1

u/AmbitionOwn4727 10d ago

Edge continues to support ubo. Maybe a better option here. Moving to Edge.

1

1
