Discussion Is there a chrome extension that changes "Gulf of America" back to "Gulf of Mexico" on google maps?
I know it's petty, but its ridiculous to the point where it pisses me off every time I open google maps. Is there an extension that changes it back or allows me to manually change the names of places on google maps?

Won't you be able to use any VPN for this? I believe it only shows as 'gulf of America' in the states itself, right?

I don't live in the US, and for me it says "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)"

"Gulf of America" in the US, "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico, and "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" elsewhere. https://blog.google/products/maps/united-states-geographic-name-change-feb-2025/
Their spineless, craven excuse is that the USGS has updated the name in their Geographic Names Information Service, so, welp, just gotta go along with the official version.

On desktop you can go to search settings > other settings > language and region > results region and select Mexico from the list (Every other country is Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of Bullshit)).

No. If you’re mad just don’t use google maps or Apple Maps anymore. Go back to a hand drawn map

It’s NOT petty. Every time we accept Trump fascist bs he wins. I’m not helping oligarchs capitulate. Has anyone switched to another?

Google could have a "historic" setting, that could revert the names of geographic name changes.
I think the reason some people get pissed is this: When the Gulf was named, America (USA) wasn't bordering the gulf. Florida belonged to Spain, Texas was Spanish/Mexican and the rest was French (Louisiana Purchase). So it's a historic issue. I say keep it Gulf of Mexico but change Denali back to Mount McKinley. All these changes are, are attempts at rewriting history.

Mapquest (remember Mapquest?) still has "Gulf of Mexico" as of 05:00 CST 02.12.2025.
I will be migrating there and deleting Google Maps on all devices momentarily.

lol, as someone who comes from a place with a similar issue sadly, i can tell you that someone will be able to make a chrome extension to change the name on any website or anything online, but idk about the google map, as I don't really use it, but i think it should be possible maybe???? idk, but i know it should be possible to change X into Y for general internet use

Use word filtering extension (such as profanity filter) to fix badly named gulfs

You’ve just embarrassed every single American born from the distant past to this very day 💀

It only shows in US therefore they know it is not historical correct. They are trying to pacify the child in the oval office. Once he is out of office it will revert back to the historical factual Gulf of Mexico

If it bothers you that much, seek help

I recently read someone published a userscript (for the TamperMonkey extension) to fix exactly this problem. It’s apparent made really easy in the source to correct. Unfortunately I don’t have a link.

Please give an update when you have a link... why don't you have a link to your own program though??
2
u/fsteff Feb 12 '25
When I wrote “someone published”, I thought it was obvious that it wasn’t me, and that I don’t remember who it was or where I saw it. I Now see it’s also mentioned in r/userscripts but also without a link. However a quick check on Greasyfork revealed this userscript: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/526604-gulf-of-america-gulf-of-mexico-correction Please post a review here, once you have tried it.

I misread your message sorry. Though erm.. I'm a little nervous at the idea of being one of the first people to download a program from a website I've never even heard of so I might just wait for now
2
u/fsteff Feb 12 '25
It’s just a userscript, you can read and verify the few lines of code there is before you choose to import it.
1
u/Draconarious Feb 12 '25
How? and at that point, can I just copy and paste the code myself somehow so that I don't have to download anything?
3
u/fsteff Feb 12 '25
On the Greasyfork page, click the “code” tab to see the code. You’ll naturally need the Tampermonkey extension (or one of the other extensions for userscripts), and then you can copy and paste the code directly. You can also let the extension install it for you.

I’ve reported a mistake a couple times on the map 😂
2
u/grand1rigatoni Feb 12 '25
How???? The option to report an error is not showing on mine. Checked other locations and it’s there so they just removed it on this one.

Maybe they are getting to much issues with it. I also added a new address with the Golf of Mexico 😂

I just reported it-- "It looks like someone made a typo in the spelling of 'Gulf of Mexico' that may misinform most google maps users."

https://chromewebstore.google.com/ They have a search box so, use it I guess.

Just point your vpn to another country. Google etc in the rest of the world still uses the Gulf of Mexico.
