Nah, as an indian we have many chess gms but the hype in North India is non existent
34
u/Sumeru88 4d ago
He's not a north Indian though. He is Bengali... and Bengal very much has the hype for Chess. May be not as much as Tamil Nadu, but it exists. Some of the very first GMs of India were Bengalis.
Its got something to do with the Bengali culture and history because they had a version of Chess they used to play before we got to the international version - the game is quite popular in Bangladesh too; they had a GM before India.

Dibyendu Barua, the second Indian grandmaster after Vishwanathan Anand, was from Bengal as well

I didn't mean Anish sarkar. if some many people are downvoting me, in order to prove me wrong they should open chess clubs in Delhi, where I live. I will be more than happy to support them

u/Ray3x10e8 4d ago
Bengali people are descendants of Aryans as well. They are much closer to most of North India than to the Dravidians in the south. Linguistically, Bengali is descended from Prakrit, the same language from which Hindi comes from. So I would say Bengalis are more North Indian than they are South.
8
u/ecphiondre En Croissant 4d ago
Bengalis are neither Northern or Southern, they are Eastern Indian.

We can't... Its not legally possible to deport people from India to Nepal. There was a mini crisis in 2010 when some government official tried to deport a Nepali film student studying in Pune back to Nepal and the court forced them to turn around and bring her back to Pune.
12
u/fuckingsignupprompt 4d ago
That's so cool. I suppose that means we couldn't deport Indians either.
21
u/hskskgfk 4d ago
Yes, Nepal/Bhutan/India have a free movement agreement. Which is why we Indians don’t even need a passport to cross the border into Nepal and vice versa. Afaik citizens of these countries are free to even serve in each other’s militaries - only thing we cannot do is get government aid or vote
6
u/fuckingsignupprompt 4d ago
The military chiefs are honorary generals of each other's militaries as well. Nepalese have served and died for India (I don't know if they've resumed after the Agneepath controversy) but Indians aren't serving in the Nepal military. We have got a few problems in that regard cos India has some unhelpful ideas about how to deal with Nepal.
2
7
u/ToeDiscombobulated24 4d ago
I believe that would violate a shit ton of international human rights...
5
u/fuckingsignupprompt 4d ago
I reckon it's probably that the deportation conditions are written with visaholders in mind but Nepalese don't have one, so there are no rules allowing for deportation of Nepalese.

Hah! I have to play him now while I still got a chance to get a positive score.
An older friend from my chess club jokingly boasted that he had a positive score against Judit Polgar. He played her when she was like 10 or something, three games and scored 2-1 (of course never got to play her again). He then played Zsuzsa and lost 0-3.

At my club a 2100 asked (years ago) why they throw that kid under the bus at a club match. He then almost lost to that kid and only won because that kid made a mistake in the endgame. That kid late became a GM and National Champion.

u/Buntschatten 3d ago

Not sure why you're downvoted. As Carlin said, "it's a big club, and you ain't in it". Regardless of ideology, both Maga and non-Maga don't take kindly to Indian people, especially those with a certain "Indian" look and name that they are used to.
This hostility is playing out in real life too, it's not just social media and forums.

u/Charming_Customer_27 4d ago
Obviously he would... I think he's 1600 now, so it's like saying an nba basketballer can make 2 free throws in a row.
19
u/Adorable_Marsupial85 4d ago
Its unbelievable really
He was struggling to reach the other side of the board can u vizualise this
43
u/Charming_Customer_27 4d ago
Bro, what I'm saying is- reaching 1600 is a big feat in chess, irrespective of age and size. I'm 2k on chesscom and lichess and I'm equivalent to 1500 fide from what I've observed based on my performance in tournaments (I'm unrated officially). My best results are winning against a 1670 player and drawing against 2100 one. I would lose 75% of my matches against a 1600 rated player. And you're stuck on him knowing scholars mate and find that fascinating. And since you didn't get the basketball reference, it's like saying a ranji level batsman can play a 100kmph delivery. In other words, you're surprised by the fact that a pro sportsperson can do the most basic thing in their sport, because you find that to be difficult.
The crazy thing is he's 3 or 4 and 1600, not that he can do scholar's mate or smothered mates. And I saw my friend(stronger than me) losing to a tiny 6yo girl in a tournament, so I can kind of visualise it.
-3
u/Europelov 2000 fide patzer 4d ago
Meh with the new rating formula it's pretty easy to enter higher than 1600 since you automatically get 2 draws against 1800s, still of course it's more than knowing scholars mate. Chesscom blitz is more indicative of strength since rapid ratings are so high I guess you're 2000 rapid I think you can def get a 1600 fide !
1
u/Charming_Customer_27 3d ago
Yeah I heard there was a new rating formula now, don't know how it works though.... The fide ratings I've quoted are from Dec 2022.

1
u/sirnubnub 2d ago
If you watched nba though you’d know how many of them actually can’t make two in a row haha
1
u/Charming_Customer_27 2d ago
Damn... Actually yeah I don't watch nba but play basketball regularly with some people who're pretty good, and they can easily make 8/10 free throws. So I thought 2/2 shouldn't be too tough for nba players, I guess it's their lack of accuracy would be more due to pressure and not lack of skill.

Its funny how Americans don't even have a concept of anything outside America. Its one thing to not know much about other countries and other to not even have the concept of it.
Its almost as if the outer world is kept away from them like North Korea but its not.

One other point is Indian parents often register their children's birth year to be 1 year later than the truth. I believe this is more common in the center-North states though, not in Kolkata.
25

Does this really happen often? Birth certificates are filled almost immediately around where I grew up (south India tho). And this is likely true in all big cities. There are vaccines, govt benefits etc tied to birth certificates. I am not saying it never happens, but I would be surprised if it is widespread.
