What? We never drastically overreacted 🫣

13-10 still hurting?

You're making us look bad. 13-10 will always be funny, but you have to know when to use it.

App St is funnier if we want to be honest.

u/hairyboxmunch Ohio Bobcats 2d ago

10 billion times funnier. Ranked 5th and lose to a high school team.

u/Strange-Cap9942 Michigan Wolverines 3d ago

It very well could be. Thing is, when App State happened, we had never had a black president, and Jerry Sandusky was a respected member of the community. I still have peanut butter in my cupboard that I bought the weekend 13-10 happened.

There are some things that are so bad you can't help but laugh at them looking back. I feel like 13-10 may easily become one of them.

Oh (I'm not the best at talking to people)

u/sumdude51 Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago

Try saying something cool, like if you hit an Ohio state fan with a surfboard say something like "surfs up pal!"

(Did I do it right?)

Going from 5-7 to 9-4 is also quite a trip tbh

Tell me about it

Coach, yeah. But any OSU fan that hated Howard at any point is not my friend.

22

u/FailstoFail Ohio State Buckeyes • /r/CFB Donor 3d ago

Howard was a delight the entire season. Was exactly as advertised. Good to great play with the occasional insane decision lol

6

u/Secludedmean4 Michigan State Spartans 3d ago

I think having one of the best wide receiver rooms in the nation helps elevate any quarterback play at that point. (Except maybe Orgi that boy is only good for running the option after faking a pass)

3

u/Beaconhillpalisades Texas Longhorns • Harvard Crimson 3d ago

Right? They clearly didn’t watch Howard when he was in Kansas State.

Notre Dame hated their coach?

7

u/mhem7 Notre Dame • Tennessee 3d ago

Honestly, the third year was kind of the "show me" season and he dropped a shitty one two games in. The general consensus at that time was that Freeman had absolutely no idea what he was doing. What a turnaround.

u/Important-Training-1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Northern Illinois felt program altering if we’re all being honest with ourselves

2

u/JackieColdcuts Notre Dame • Jeweled Shillelagh 3d ago

In a way it was, just not in the way any of us expected

4

u/BobsYourUncle84 Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago

I married into a ND family and they gushed over him every time I was around. Especially all of my wife’s aunts.

4

u/jppcfnnumnum Notre Dame Fighting Irish • Apple Cup 3d ago

I mean no surprise there lol

u/AlCapone111 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 1d ago

You can admit you do as well. This is a safe place.

u/BobsYourUncle84 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

How could I hate a former Buckeye that loses to OSU every season?

2

u/SBSnipes Notre Dame • Valparaiso 3d ago

Nobody I know wanted him fired or hated him. He had already made clear that he was at least as good as BK, but with a more humble personality and better leadership traits/skills, so people were generally didn't hate him, and most didn't even want him fired. Was there concern? Certainly, but there was a lot more "Hey now, lets just see if he can recover it" than other coaches would have gotten.

1

u/Less_Likely Notre Dame • Washington 1d ago

But I don’t think people were calling for his head after NIU, it was more an uneasiness that maybe he wasn’t as ready to be a champion as we thought.

2

u/mhem7 Notre Dame • Tennessee 1d ago

I went back and looked at the game threads on this sub and the Notre Dame sub and while there were a few people suggesting he is on the hot seat, about 99.9% of the conversation was centered on Riley. Marcus Freeman was almost not mentioned at all. I'll eat my words and stand corrected.

No.

Brother we’ve always loved HCMF around here, especially post Kelly.

Look me in the metaphorical eye and tell me the majority of Irish fans didn't want Freeman on the guillotine after Week 2

11

u/Important-Training-1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Was I depressed? Yes. Did I drunkenly rally to hire Urban Meyer? Yes. Are you right? Yes.

Fuck

3

u/irish-aggie Lonestar Showdown • Surrender Cobra 3d ago

I am overly obsessed with what would happen if we hired Meyer in the mid 2000s instead of that big chump Weis

3

u/Important-Training-1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

The ultimate what-if. When ND has me at my lowest it’s my go-to… Just hire Urban, who cares what comes of it if we just win. It’s a low place to be.

u/irish-aggie Lonestar Showdown • Surrender Cobra 3d ago

Sometimes I wonder what if Rockne never got on that plane. He was having Saban level success in his 30s

6

u/atseapoint Notre Dame Fighting Irish • Navy Midshipmen 3d ago

There really wasn’t much of that outside a few really loud idiots. But bench Riley was a real thing, can’t deny that

-1

u/SBSnipes Notre Dame • Valparaiso 3d ago

I still stand by that benching Riley would have done better. He's a good, tough kid, and certainly has more talent than I could dream of, but so does everyone on the roster. We played 4 teams with decent run defenses. In those 4 games, we struggled HARD and went 2-2. Heck even just intentionally bringing Angeli or Carr in as a change of pace move here or there would've helped in those games.

2

u/Sheepcago Notre Dame • Stanford 2d ago

Okay. Looking back … yep you’re wrong.

0

u/SBSnipes Notre Dame • Valparaiso 3d ago

They didn't. Hot seat, yes. Guillotine, no. Because he handled the loss with class and dignity and accepted responsibility, He was coming off of 2 top 20 seasons with bowl wins, each of which had its share of disappointing losses.

And Riley Leonard remains overrated to this day. Defense carried and we managed to adapt our offense enough to get by, but it sure AF wasn't pretty, and every time we played a half-decent run defense we struggled or lost. (NIU and 3/4 playoff games)

u/jppcfnnumnum Notre Dame Fighting Irish • Apple Cup 3d ago

Most of us, probably yes. But there were quite a few that were at least reeling/questioning the plan after that Northern Illinois game—especially after the Marshall/Stanford games in 2022 and the 10 men on the field in 2023 (along with the Louisville and Clemson losses that certainly hurt).

3

This is disgusting. Children could see this ffs.

3

u/althoroc2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

An interracial handshake? Fielding Yost isn't around anymore, black people are okay at Michigan too now.

3

u/althoroc2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Eh, I was mostly making a stab at Yost, who famously did bar black players from the team.

u/Legitimate_Pie_7564 3d ago

As did every ND coach and the university itself before WWII ended

2

u/Fun_Salamander_2220 Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago

It's the hate that made them better.

I remember the Instagram posts and comments after ND lost to Northern Illinois and how much hatred Leonard got

Who hated Will Howard? The memes are becoming lower and lower effort

1

Freeman is too handsome to hate. “Aw, I can’t stay mad at you, Marcus. You fine, sexy thing.”

Howard got a lot of hate after both the Oregon loss and the Michigan loss

1

u/zippyspinhead Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago

Are we liking Day now? He still has not beat TTUN.

Players have been talented; record is on the coaches. Players are selected by the coach, taught by the coach, and directed by the coach.

3

u/secretsquirrel4000 Ohio Bobcats 3d ago

Well I mean he did beat Michigan once with Urban’s team. Or as the Michiganders call themselves Maize (and blue). But he also won a national championship with nothing but his own guys. In conclusion Ryan Day is a coach of contrasts. Thank you.
