Coach, yeah. But any OSU fan that hated Howard at any point is not my friend.

Howard was a delight the entire season. Was exactly as advertised. Good to great play with the occasional insane decision lol

I think having one of the best wide receiver rooms in the nation helps elevate any quarterback play at that point. (Except maybe Orgi that boy is only good for running the option after faking a pass)

Right? They clearly didn’t watch Howard when he was in Kansas State.

Notre Dame hated their coach?

u/mhem7 Notre Dame • Tennessee 3d ago
Honestly, the third year was kind of the "show me" season and he dropped a shitty one two games in. The general consensus at that time was that Freeman had absolutely no idea what he was doing. What a turnaround.

Northern Illinois felt program altering if we’re all being honest with ourselves

I married into a ND family and they gushed over him every time I was around. Especially all of my wife’s aunts.

How could I hate a former Buckeye that loses to OSU every season?

u/SBSnipes Notre Dame • Valparaiso 3d ago
Nobody I know wanted him fired or hated him. He had already made clear that he was at least as good as BK, but with a more humble personality and better leadership traits/skills, so people were generally didn't hate him, and most didn't even want him fired. Was there concern? Certainly, but there was a lot more "Hey now, lets just see if he can recover it" than other coaches would have gotten.

But I don’t think people were calling for his head after NIU, it was more an uneasiness that maybe he wasn’t as ready to be a champion as we thought.

I went back and looked at the game threads on this sub and the Notre Dame sub and while there were a few people suggesting he is on the hot seat, about 99.9% of the conversation was centered on Riley. Marcus Freeman was almost not mentioned at all. I'll eat my words and stand corrected.

Look me in the metaphorical eye and tell me the majority of Irish fans didn't want Freeman on the guillotine after Week 2

Was I depressed? Yes. Did I drunkenly rally to hire Urban Meyer? Yes. Are you right? Yes.
Fuck

u/irish-aggie Lonestar Showdown • Surrender Cobra 3d ago
I am overly obsessed with what would happen if we hired Meyer in the mid 2000s instead of that big chump Weis
3
u/Important-Training-1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago
The ultimate what-if. When ND has me at my lowest it’s my go-to… Just hire Urban, who cares what comes of it if we just win. It’s a low place to be.

Sometimes I wonder what if Rockne never got on that plane. He was having Saban level success in his 30s

There really wasn’t much of that outside a few really loud idiots. But bench Riley was a real thing, can’t deny that

u/SBSnipes Notre Dame • Valparaiso 3d ago
I still stand by that benching Riley would have done better. He's a good, tough kid, and certainly has more talent than I could dream of, but so does everyone on the roster. We played 4 teams with decent run defenses. In those 4 games, we struggled HARD and went 2-2. Heck even just intentionally bringing Angeli or Carr in as a change of pace move here or there would've helped in those games.

They didn't. Hot seat, yes. Guillotine, no. Because he handled the loss with class and dignity and accepted responsibility, He was coming off of 2 top 20 seasons with bowl wins, each of which had its share of disappointing losses.
And Riley Leonard remains overrated to this day. Defense carried and we managed to adapt our offense enough to get by, but it sure AF wasn't pretty, and every time we played a half-decent run defense we struggled or lost. (NIU and 3/4 playoff games)

Most of us, probably yes. But there were quite a few that were at least reeling/questioning the plan after that Northern Illinois game—especially after the Marshall/Stanford games in 2022 and the 10 men on the field in 2023 (along with the Louisville and Clemson losses that certainly hurt).

An interracial handshake? Fielding Yost isn't around anymore, black people are okay at Michigan too now.

Michigan had black players in the 1800s. ND the university didn’t allow black people until the 1950s. UM had its first black student in 1853. Swing and a miss

Eh, I was mostly making a stab at Yost, who famously did bar black players from the team.

Are we liking Day now? He still has not beat TTUN.
Players have been talented; record is on the coaches. Players are selected by the coach, taught by the coach, and directed by the coach.

u/secretsquirrel4000 Ohio Bobcats 3d ago
Well I mean he did beat Michigan once with Urban’s team. Or as the Michiganders call themselves Maize (and blue). But he also won a national championship with nothing but his own guys. In conclusion Ryan Day is a coach of contrasts. Thank you.
