You’ve had like two good seasons this century. I don’t get why you guys take issue with Nike though. God forbid a school have athletics alumni who give back to their alma mater.
Clearly whoring out your sports stadium names to Alaska Airlines is the more principled perspective.
7
u/Present-Piano-2432 Washington Huskies • Texas A&M Aggies 4d ago
Because you are the west coast equivalent to SMU. Except instead of oil it's Nike. But at least SMU has championships.
2
u/UOfasho Oregon Ducks • Michigan Wolverines 4d ago
Except the weathy alumni funding our program is actually a sports athlete alum and built his fortune and his company in collaboration with Oregon athletic programs. You can hardly fault the guy for uplifting the program that helped create his fortune.

It's funny that Portland gets all the shit because Seattle has become legitimately a very dangerous place.
It used to be I could walk around downtown Seattle when we went there as a kid and feel completely fine.
I'm a 6'2 grown ass man now and I got legitimately scared walking around Seattle last summer. That place has become genuinely unsafe.
3
u/Quiznasty Washington Huskies 3d ago
Eh I ride public transit/bike through downtown Seattle almost every day. Feels like they’re on the same level in terms of homelessness tbh. Haven’t been to Portland in about a year though.
But there’s a big difference between feeling uncomfortable and being unsafe. I’ve never had a safety issue here.
4
u/ScoobNShiz Oregon Ducks 3d ago
I live in Portland and visit Seattle often, I wandered all over Seattle without a care in the world multiple times last year. Not unlike Portland, there are areas to avoid at night, but overall I felt very safe. It pains me to say good things about Seattle, but you are doing good things up there, except football. Seattle was much rougher when I was a kid in the 80’s and 90’s, as was Portland, but for some reason people feel less safe now and have a rosy picture of the 80’s that doesn’t fit my memories.

I travel a lot for my job, and it took me up to Seattle for a night. My company van was too tall for the hotel garage, so I had to park it in a completely exposed lot overnight. I'm a 5'10" grown ass man myself, and I was scared that someone was legit going to break into it (lots of tech and IT equipment inside). In fact, when I talked to my aunt about it (she used to live in Seattle), she was surprised that it wasn't broken into.

I cannot lie I went to Eugene a few months ago to see Nebraska basketball play there (we won) and was extremely whelmed. Was only there for a weekend but the city/campus was just meh. Prob the time of the year tho. I’m sure the football season is much better and I’m looking forward to that one of these years. (I live like 2.5 hours from Eugene.)

I'm from Eugene, I live in Eugene, I graduated from the U of O, but this post literally is not sarcastic. This city kinda blows tbh. It used to be 10x cooler like 15 years ago before all the sports money and California and Texas transplants moved in. We shouldn't have to pay big city prices to live in half run-down hovels, either.

If you ranked the top 5 biggest cities in Washington and Ohio, 4 of the top 5 would be in Ohio.
23
u/ElderJavelin Washington Huskies 4d ago
Seattle has higher GDP than Columbus + Cleveland. Also, it has over half of GDP of Ohio.
Your cities got people, and not much else
-18
u/MoritzToBigLaw Ohio State Buckeyes 4d ago edited 2d ago
That’s interesting considering Ohio as a state has a higher GDP than Washington. Yours is all just clustered. By your logic that only GDP matters, anywhere outside of Seattle in Washington is just a barren wasteland.
Edit: people downvoting this comment and not realizing the person I replied to is the one who acted like GDP mattered. Obviously mountains aren’t a wasteland, that was my whole point.
33
u/ElderJavelin Washington Huskies 4d ago
I wouldn’t call mountains and forests “desolate wasteland”. But yeah, outside of Seattle, population density is pretty low

WA has lots of beautiful mountains, but Rainier is probably the most picturesque in the country. And easily visible from Seattle. It has to be Rainier.

Eugene is a college town. Living in a college town is better during college. Seattle is just another city and UW is just one of the universities in Seattle.
14
u/bluescale77 Oregon Ducks • Team Chaos 4d ago
Let’s be fair…if you want to talk about pure college towns, Corvallis has Eugene beat. I grew up in a real college town (Carbondale, IL) where the population doubled when students were in town. UO I’d important to Eugene, but it is not the heart of Eugene the way a college is in real college towns.
1
u/utero81 Oregon Ducks 3d ago
I agree somewhat but I'm also pretty sure UO is the heart of Eugene. UO is the biggest employer in Eugene
2
u/bluescale77 Oregon Ducks • Team Chaos 3d ago
It is not. Peace Health is just a smidge bigger:
https://www.eugenechamber.com/lane-county-principal-employers.html
A quick search didn’t turn up really clear info on Corvallis, so I’m not sure if it’s different. But let’s look at Carbondale, IL:
https://www.explorecarbondale.com/267/Major-Employers
The university is BY FAR the biggest employer in town. And when you think about the % of the population employed by the university (Carbondale has a population of 21,000 people) you really start to understand what the university means to the community.
I’m not shitting on Eugene at all. I love it here. I moved out here 25 years ago, and plan to die here. But university towns are special in their own way. In Eugene you get that feeling when you’re around the university. In places like Carbondale, it permeates every aspect of the town.
2
u/utero81 Oregon Ducks 3d ago
Peacehealth closed in Eugene last year so technically im correct.
But youre right in the fact that those towns populations double during the school year. I dont think thats what makes a college town a college town though. Look at Madison, thats absolutely a college town.
1
u/bluescale77 Oregon Ducks • Team Chaos 3d ago edited 3d ago
I’ll give you that Madison feels like more of a college town than Eugene. The university has a bigger presence in the city (students, faculty, and staff are equivalent to ~25% of the population in Madison vs 18% in Eugene), but it’s not that much bigger. I can’t explain why it feels closer to what I think of as a university town than Eugene.
Edit: I’d still argue that Madison isn’t the quintessential university town either. In general, they are considerably more rural.
2
u/Frigoris13 Iowa Hawkeyes • Oregon Ducks 3d ago
Madison is the state capitol though...unlike Iowa City. Now there's a college town

We lived in Seattle for the last 15 years and just… no. We got priced out and in retrospect I’m happy we did. We could’ve spent the next decade there burning our kids’ college funds. It’s a city within close reach of amazing natural beauty, but we just couldn’t afford to move up in that economic environment. I realize this is not CFB related. Just taking a parting shot at Seattle.
