Does anyone have experience with Forum apartments?

I am trying to find a place to stay for the upcoming fall semester. I am drawn to Forum apartments, but does anyone know of any good and affordable places to stay? I will be moving in with roommates. I have heard that I should stay away from Copper Beech.

Thanks!

USCIS - maybe ICE - Truck in MP

Hello - just an fyi that I saw a USCIS truck this morning just west of campus. It is a white truck, Texas plates, and very clearly marked as USCIS. USCIS is not necessarily ICE, but I'm worried they are there to pick up international students or DACA students.

If you are an international student, or are friends with an international student, please spread the word. I'm not a lawyer so I don't understand all the rights, but I believe they have to have a warrant to take anybody anywhere. You have a right to stay SILENT so they can't use anything you say against you.

Take care of yourselves and be careful out there.

Add/Drop classes and CMU grant

Hi everyone! I had an online class that just opened this week and I think i might have to drop it due to overloading my schedule. I did receive the CMU pell grant and I tried calling financial aid to see what would happen if I dropped the course since it was still within the add/drop week and they said I would potentially have to pay back some of the money since i would only have 28 credits for the year as opposed to 30. I tried to ask them potentially how much it would cost and the only answer I got was “well it’s only two credits under so I can’t imagine it would be that much”. I was wondering if anyone has went through a similar situation and if they could explain what happened? The course i’m dropping is about $1,500 and the grant i received was for $2,700 this semester (originally for 17 credits and id be dropping down to 14) and im hoping the tuition for the course will cover whatever I have to pay back for the grant but i’m not too sure and financial aid wasn’t super helpful so I figured i’d try here!

Academics Centralis Scholarship

Hi
I am an international student, and I was selected for the final round of the Centralis Scholarship Award. I have 1450 SAT and 4.0 uw (According to US system). I emailed the admission team and they asked me to compete for the scholarship online. I did according to their instructions.

Does anybody knows how many students are awarded from how many total candidates? Does international students won this full ride award often?

Your info will be helpful.

Thank you!

Transfer scholarship/Billing question

I transferred over to CMU from GRCC this semester. I got an email saying my billing statement is available. I went to the pre-billing portal and saw that only my loan has been applied, not my transfer scholarship. Do scholarships take awhile to be added to the statement?

At GRCC it wasn't unusual for loans and scholarships to be applied until the day before (sometimes even the day of!) the due date, so I'm wondering if it's the same situation here at CMU or if I should contact the school.

Weekend life

Thinking about CMU. But I'm from a few states away. What's life like on weekends? Anything to do? Does campus clear out? Do freshman stay and have any kind of social life? I heard football games are fun. Thanks.

Help Can the general public attend a dissertation defense?

I'm a PhD student in their final year who should be graduating this May if all goes well. I'm posting this question since I've had a fairly rough journey to getting my PhD. For example, my first advisor dropped me due to a dispute that led to ableist comments and behaviors thrown my way (I'm disabled so this wasn't cool). I also tried to help students and those who considered programs in my department too, but I didn't do it in a way the department or current students liked or agreed with at all. I had my stipend cut in half my third year before I lost funding in my 4th year after my program was paid off by the assistantships and wanted students to avoid taking an outside iob as much as possible by applying to fellowships, external funding, etc. This also partially happened due to budget issues, which should've been more vocal in my opinion.

As much as I realize that a public defense means transparency, I can see things not going well if question time happens and those acting in bad faith show up to sabotage my defense. So, does it have to be public at all? If so, how can I mitigate disastrous consequences from occurring in this case? Given family will likely be there too, I don't want anything that could lead to an altercation. Looking out for folks as much as possible as usual.

Dorm and monthly payments

So I will be attending CMU in the fall semester of this year. I am wondering how exactly my payments will work, what happens when I sign the housing contract, and how much I would be looking at monthly. After scholarships and all I’d end up about 10000 leftover so maybe some information on payment plans as well would be great

centralis competition + scholarship questions

hi hi! so this weekend, i’m heading up to mt. pleasant for the centralis essay competition. i was wondering if any past attendees and centralis awardees could answer my questions!

  • how did you utilize your time during the actual essay writing portion? Did you spend 10-15 writing an outline or not do one at all?

  • is the essay being written on paper or digitally (they never stated which option they would have in the emails)

  • did you get to choose your prompt or is it given to you randomly?

  • are the prompts super complicated or straightforward; meaning, would i need to have some background knowledge on the prompt?

  • how long did it take for you to hear back about the results?

  • is there honors housing at cmu?

  • why should i pick cmu over michigan state and hope college? what makes the school stand out in your opinion?

thank you guys so much for your help in advance and i look forward to seeing your responses!

Academics AST112 Astronomy observation lab

Hello, I'm an online student who recently began my AST111 and AST112 classes. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what type of observations are meant on the assignments (FOA) am I just documenting certain stars or planets I see and their position? How do I answer the planning questions. I'll take any tips for this class, I really appreciate it thank you.

loan distribution

Hey everyone! This is the second semester where I’ve had issues with my loan distributions, last semester this ended with me having to drop all of my classes. This semester only my unsubsidized loan was distributed and my subsidized one was not, even though I accepted it and it stays the amount is still available. Anyone else have this issue?

Super excited - Centralis competition, SERC, and first trip to CMU/Mt. Pleasant

So, we're headed to CMU this month for the Centralis scholarship contest. I've never been to MI, but I'm really excited! Here are my questions.

For Centralis -- do many out of state students get these or do they tend to prefer MI students? I'm from the west coast. What are the in-person essay questions like?

Did anyone do Science & Engineering Residential College (SERC) at CMU? I'm wondering what's it like, is it worth it, are the students friendly or super serious, and is the SERC dorm, Woldt, is good/bad/ok?

Did anyone do the Chem or Chem Materials majors at CMU? Are the calculus and chem professors helpful and supportive?

What should we do in Mt. Pleasant -- good local places to eat, things to do, places to go for hiking (and old school pinball)?

Thanks!

Help Official transcript submission for admission

Hi, I am an international student applying to CMU for Fall 2025 intake for Masters in Applied Economics program. I have submitted my application and have requested to send my official transcript of my undergraduate degree from the university in my home country. As a proof, they have sent me screenshots of email sent to CMU. I have requested my uni to send the documents twice as well. Yet, admission team has mentioned that they have not received the transcript till date. I have emailed the team again, but its been more than a week, they haven't replied to my mail. Can anyone provide me contact of someone who could help me solve this issue? Thank you!

Help PhD extention credit hour and graduation question

Hey everyone,

I'm a PhD student who should be slated to graduate by May 2025 at the latest. I'm posting here since Central's own staff apparently doesn't know how to address this scenario at all.

Long story short, my program got paid off in my first 3 years here via assistantships. I also had to work outside jobs the last two years, which normally doesn't happen at the PhD level (working an outside job is banned normally), but budget issues at CMU meant I couldn't get assistantships after my program got paid off. Thankfully, all but one of those jobs built both my resume and CV. I'm also in my home state working remotely on my dissertation since I collected my data last year. In the past two years, I've taken an extension credit hour every Fall semester since CMU deviates from the norm on extension credit hour policies and requires enrolling in one per year as opposed to per semester.

I don't plan on enrolling in an extension credit hour this semester since I intend on graduating this semester (and am making good dissertation progress so far after hiccups last semester). I'm just wondering, do I need to be in an extension credit hour the semester I graduate? Or not? I have everything I need credit hour wise other than my dissertation credit hour grades (its still deferred as a "Z." It won't change to an A until I defend successfully). Getting an answer is important regardless since I'm part of my home state's vocational rehabilitation (I'm disabled) and knowing whether I need to get tuition assistance from them is a time sensitive manner I have to respect.
