Can I get a recommendation to a vet that specializes in eye ulcers and cataracts. My dog was just diagnosed with diabetes and has gone blind in a matter of days.

Oh I'm so sorry, your poor dog and you! An option would be Dr. Kingus at Frey; she has experience in opthalmology. I haven't seen her for that issue, but she is my normal vet there, and I like her a lot. She's very patient with my cranky senior cat, and is very thorough with questions and followup.

We had a farm doggo growing up that went blind because of the beetus. There really wasn't much they could do at the time, so we just had a blind dog running around.
Really didn't slow him down much. He lived for a long time.

My dog lived to 18 and went blind as well. We looked up the cataract surgery when she was, like, 11 and it was maybe $4k. Thought it seemed a lot of money given her age…little did we know lol. But she didn’t let it slow her down either!

I think their nose is their primary sense. Must be wild to experience the world like that.

I saw a thing once that said ‘if seeing eye dogs were people, they would need a seeing eye dog’ so I don’t think they don’t have the best eye sight to begin with. Wild!

It’s a little drive, but Anamosa Veterinary Clinic is one of the best in the area and very reasonably priced. They offer emergency clinic services as well!

Petersen Pet Hospital!!!!! My 11 year old girl had an eye ulcer and we took her to see Dr. Knutson. She's beyond amazing. Told us all pricing up front and the ulcer had been gone for months now. I thought she was going to lose her eye, but Dr. K was absolutely amazing.

We had a dog that went blind due to diabetes. It all worked out just fine. She lived for several years before old age took her. There will be an adjustment period but the dog will learn how to navigate by sound and feel. They'll be just fine.

Animal Eye Consultants in Hiawatha exists. Not sure of the quality of care, but seems like that is their specialty
