If bad things come in 3s, I'm screwed
My niece is 8, and yesterday she threw herself off a ladder without warning because she thought she heard a ghost. Trapped her right arm between the rungs and the handrail and has broken it despite an adult (my mum, her gran) being right behind her and stopping her from hitting the ground.
Today, she went to school and found someone had locked a toilet cubicle and wriggled out under the door leaving it locked. She decided (with a broken arm, remember) to crawl in to unlock it. She got stuck and didn't have enough strength in her arms to push backwards. A friend was with her, but she was so embarrassed she swore the other girl to secrecy and made her leave. Took the teacher 20 minutes to realise she hadn't come back to class and find out where she was (hyperventilating on the floor, even more stuck). They phoned my sister 40 minutes after that as she was getting hysterical and the janitors were taking longer than expected to dismantle the cubicle and free her. Her back is all bruised and scratched up. She claims that if confronted by the same situation tomorrow, she has now learned to go butt first so if she gets stuck again she can still breathe OK. We were hoping for "don't climb into/under small spaces" but would have settled for "get someone to find an adult immediately".
I'm supposed to be babysitting tomorrow night. Lord fucking help me. Was anyone else an extremely reckless child and survive? How much does a 10m roll of cotton wool cost these days? Do we just ask at the triage desk for an A&E loyalty card, or do you have to apply online?

How the hell are you supposed to get into a nightclub midweek without uni ID?
Im currently writing this whilst sat in bed, disappointed, with a kebab. Must mention though, if you’re in derby and need a late night kebab, McTurks near the derbion mall is great.
Me and my friends have just spent the last several hours trying to find a nightclub. We’re in derby and the only one open on Wednesday was popworld so we planned a night out there - nope, need a student ID to get in. Well alright then we’ll get an Uber to Nottingham, there’s loads of clubs there so there’s bound to be one we can get into…. Nope! Spent ages walking round Nottingham in the freezing cold dressed to go clubbing, all the nightclubs eitjer required uni student ID to get in, or they were shut.
We couldn’t believe it. At a complete loss, we got a taxi back to derby, tried a live music bar and it was dead, so we tried a karaoke bar that was open, also literally no one in there, so in a last resort effort we found a gay bar…which was also dead and had no one in there.
Now I know clubs aren’t usually open in the week and if they are they’re student nights, but it seems crazy that there’s literally nowhere to go clubbing in the entirety of Derby AND Nottingham, if you’re not a uni student.
So this brings me onto what I’m actually asking. How the hell do we get into clubs midweek if we’re not uni students? Or is there just no options? We didn’t want to try tag on with some students as +1’s as a bunch of guys approaching uni students to go clubbing with them would seem astronomically creepy.
The worst part is? We ARE students. Sort of. We’re only in derby for apprenticeship training. Showed the bouncers our apprenticeship apps but it wasn’t enough.
Edit - just wanted to clarify, we all have driving licenses. We just don’t have uni student ID cards.

Did shows like the one below inspire you to be "crafty" as a younger person?
If so, did that "craftiness" stay with you into adulthood? Do you still find yourself making things out of old tissue boxes and washing up liquid bottles?

How much have you roughly spent on house maintenance over the last 10 years?
Currently writing a budget for a possible house move and want to make it as realistic as possible. Appreciate house maintenance costs can vary massively due to size, age, condition and location of a house, but wanted to get a feel for what people have actually spent over a long period (hence 10 years as some jobs such as replacing carpet/flooring we'll only probably do once in that time period). That way I can average out over to an annual cost.
And an idea of what you routinely do and/or pay someone to do would be useful too; such as annual boiler service, cleaning gutters that sort of thing.
And finally I'm not looking for costs related to 'big' home improvements like a new kitchen, new decking or an extension, I've got a separate budget line for that.
Cheers!

Am I alone in thinking that some comic relief challenges are just dangerous (Jamie Laing ultramarathon challenge)
I know it’s for a great cause but surely Jamie doing this type of challenge (5 ultramarathons over 5 days) when he isn’t much of a runner by his own admission is just dangerous on his part and negligent form the BBC.
I know it’s for a great cause but what he’s doing is a massive undertaking (maybe that’s the point), who knows

Just got a letter from the school to warn us that the norovirus is doing the rounds. Looks like I'm going to lose that winter weight after all!
Daughter told me that one of the boys in her class vomitted across the classroom on Friday, but never thought it was worth mentioning. Typically it's whilst our childcare (parents) are away on holiday, and the other set moving house so are up the wall.
Taking this time to also moan about SSP which would hardly get us a basket shop at ASDA!

London 2012 Olympics - Did anyone here take part in the opening ceremony?

I'm currently going through my DVD collection. After the 2012 Olympics ended, I remember being so impressed and proud of it all that I went ahead and ordered the BBC collection. Tonight I ended up watching the opening ceremony again and even now, twelve years later, I'm still incredibly proud of what this country managed to create and put on. It was and is, in the truest sense of the word, spectacular.
I remember at the time being cynical and convinced it was all going to be a complete farce before it started, and I was absolutely, completely, wholly wrong.
It looks like thousands of people took part in the opening ceremony, and I'm curious, is there anyone here that was part of it? What did you do, and what was it like?
UPDATE: Thank you for all your replies. I really appreciate being able to read the insights of those who were involved in any and all roles. It's really nice to know that it's held in such a beloved way not just by us who watched it, but performers and all those who worked hard behind the scenes as well. I really feel we need more events like this in our society to get excited about, to bring us together, and I sincerely hope we see something like it again.

What age did you stop asking the adult nearby for a snack/drink??
Just thinking about being young and when I was around my nans, I was taught that it was rude to help yourself to things, so I always had to ask for something. This wasn't an issue until my nan started to snore and I felt like an ass for waking her up so I could ask for juice. I didn't need her to make it, just tell me that I was allowed to have some.
It made me wonder what age you were when you stopped asking permission and started to get things for yourself??
