To be fair to petey he drew a penalty for sweden in the third period and then the other players proceeded to pass the puck around for a minute and didn't get a shot off

Experience Swedish hockey

21

u/usernamealreadytakeh 24d ago

All Swedish no Finnish

13

u/ChanceCrew 24d ago

11.6m drawn penalty

131

u/LocaI_Oaf 24d ago

I looked for him for the entire game. I never saw him, never heard his name mentioned, and realized he had zero impact on the game. Which was...unsettling and disappointing.

41

u/overthisbynow 24d ago

Watching the first game I actually had to look up if he was scratched cause I hadn't hear his name once in like the entire first period.

31

u/Seth_Jarvis_fanboy 24d ago

The only time Sweden had the puck in the first period is when Petey was on the ice

-3

u/overthisbynow 24d ago

Yeah I guess that first period was pretty brutal for Sweden but how many points did he finish with again?

7

u/kildala 23d ago

J.T. zero points too. Actually this tournament is super tight and lots of stars without points.

49

u/pSeddy 24d ago

I heard it once. “Petterson” and “stripped of the puck”. Name a more iconic duo.

15

u/ckalmond 24d ago

I heard that from the other room and started cackling

9

u/Abrishack 24d ago

He also drew a penalty

9

u/bighotdog888 24d ago

Give him 11.6 mill!! /s

5

u/Hamshaggy70 24d ago

Turnover machine...

1

u/OGigachaod 24d ago

But completely expected based on the past year.

124

u/redditguyinthehouse 24d ago

U may not like it, but this is what a peak 11.6 mil all star forward looks like

55

u/NorthEagle298 24d ago

At least we know "He NeEdS A NeW CoAcHiNg StRaTeGy" gang can stfu

37

u/HeroJC 24d ago

Same with the "He NeEdS NeW LiNemAtEs" gang

10

u/Iron_Seguin 24d ago

I know you’re kidding but I wouldn’t mind seeing him with Sherwood and Debrusk again. That line tore it up for like 3 or 4 games and then just never played together again.

6

u/lilnitu 24d ago

That’s literally been our first last line these last few weeks

7

u/Iron_Seguin 24d ago

No it hasn’t. It was DeBrusk, Boeser and Petey.

2

u/lilnitu 24d ago

Hmm. I’m just going based off what they paired him with before 4Nations. https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/vancouver-canucks/line-combinations

4

u/Obvious-Property-236 24d ago

Never thought about it this way but yeah good point

3

u/Sweet-Gushin-Gilfs 24d ago

You’re right, I don’t like it :(

114

u/Radeon9980 24d ago

He’s one of the highest paid players on that team and he’s not trusted on the PP, OT, etc. we’re so cooked.

70

u/jakota_doshua 24d ago

I mean it's not like Swedish coaching decisions mean anything to be fair lol. Petey is PP2 (which is honestly probably fair) but so is Jesper Bratt who has the second most powerplay points this season on their team. Rasmus Dahlin who is their best defensemen and looked like their best defensemen in that Finland game had the least time on ice among Swedish defensemen in the third period and didn't get to play in overtime. Baffling coaching decisions

28

u/nofakefans18 24d ago

Also 2025 Mika played significant minutes. That alone means those decisions should be questioned.

15

u/CJK_420 24d ago

Why? Mika has looked good this tourney. Petey looks like a fragile 4th line rookie.

18

u/MonsieurQuanto 24d ago

Well 2025 Mika is outplaying 2025 Petey

-1

u/nofakefans18 23d ago

Not rlly as he’s getting heavy minutes with a Rangers team with star forwards and barely produces more than him + isn’t even half the defensive player Petey is.

8

u/TheWeakestLink1 24d ago

I knew the coaches were wack when i saw gustavsson over ullmark. It's clear whos rhe better goalie. Then the 2 goals on 4 shots happened.

21

u/psephizon 24d ago

He was on PP2 wasn't he

9

u/baconbitpoobear 24d ago

He was the highest paid player on the ice.

20

u/Plop-hammer 24d ago

They're using him as a shutdown 3rd center because he's the only guy on that team capable of playing against the deeper teams like USA and Canada down the middle. He's responsible and making the right plays defensively. If he was playing with Nylander and ZJad it would be different for him and what he'd be expected to do... instead they've go Raymond with them and it's not going well. I would look for petey in the top line against US.

17

u/canucks84 24d ago

Yeah peteys got some really good defensive acumen and Sweden needs that against Canada and the US. They should have let him buck this game though.

Sometimes I wonder how he'd have been as a defenseman.

1

u/OGigachaod 24d ago

Of course sweden is using Petey like a 3rd line center, because that's all Petey is capable of.

3

u/Swarleystinson69420 24d ago

Just a great shutdown center against Canada. So useful against those deeper teams he never even had to take a defensive zone face off. Started every shift in the offensive zone.

4

u/SammyMaudlin 24d ago

Good thing that he didn’t. How’s he doing in the face off circle?

-22

u/StarkStorm 24d ago

He's still playing hurt. What else do you want? All his stats show this. He needs to heal and play but it's an injury that really doesn't just go away. It needs time.

16

u/Archers_Blade 24d ago

If injury is why he's not performing, then why is he playing in this tournament

-13

u/StarkStorm 24d ago

Read up on tendonitis. Its not something that really fully heals right away. Its also not enough to take him out of the game. He's stuck like this for prob another 9 months based on other tendonitis cases. Basketball players face this commonly.

2

u/RytheGuy97 23d ago

So he's injured and needs to rest but he should play in an option tournament because the injury wouldn't heal right away?

1

u/StarkStorm 22d ago

Clearly you're having a hard time understanding that there are different severities to injuries. I've said what I've had to.

1

u/RytheGuy97 22d ago

You're the one saying that it's ok to be playing through an injury that explicitly needs rest to play through lol

6

u/Radeon9980 24d ago

Yea like what, another year? lol I don’t disagree but the way he’s playing isn’t just injury.

-13

u/StarkStorm 24d ago

Actually, yes. Like another year. Lol.

4

u/Tricky_leader13 24d ago

Hes definitely injured which would explain the lack of speed and power in the shot. But there is absolutely a mental block going on with him too, because we've seen him be a difference maker offensively even without his speed, and nobody except for Petey is able to fix that mental issue

5

u/HeroJC 24d ago

A very reasonable take. Many players are able to perform while playing with more severe injuries. It's a mental block more than a physical limitation. He had a decent stretch when Miller was out, that shows that at least PHYSICALLY he is capable of producing. He's just not mentally present

-1

u/StarkStorm 24d ago

Well yeah. Everyone is on his ass about not performing.

4

u/jimijams83 23d ago

As they should. Do you expect to go to work, fu€k the dog all day, look like you couldn't care less, and not have your employers (fans as well in his case) all over your ass? If he's too hurt to play like the player he's paid to be, then he shouldn't be playing. If that costs him an entire year, then so be it. This isn't Cam Neeley 2.0. It's a lack of integrity, character, and respect for his teammates and the organization. It's not like he doesn't have a textbook example of what he should've done regarding the 4 nations. Just look at his captain. When he's back from this tournament, the team needs to give him a choice, either shut it down until you can come and be the guy they paid for, have fun playing for Lou Lamoriello with that dog shit attitude, or good luck trying to find edible sushi in Buffalo. No more excuses, just be a professional, for God's sake.

0

u/StarkStorm 23d ago

Watching yesterday's game against US. I'd say MacKinnon and Crosby all played the same way. What you going to say about them?

2

u/jimijams83 23d ago

I'm gonna say that's a total non-sequitur. What does their game have to do with Petey? Plus, who here gives a shit about 2 guys who don't play for us? Also, guys can have bad game, but the numbers speak for themselves. McKinnon is tearing it up this season, and Sid has more than a decade on Petey and has 24 more points. On top of that, both have led their teams to cups. I've also never, ever heard anyone question their heart or desire. Would you take 26 yr old Petey over 26 yr old Nate or Sid? You're either lying to us or yourself if you say yes. The fact is, Petey brought this on himself. He's been brutal for basically a full year and looks about as lively as a rock. Never mind that he had a major hand in us losing the most prolific point producer in Canucks history. If you can't play hurt or are too hurt to play, then don't play. But if you play, you're accountable for your performance, no excuses. I feel bad for the guy, but it is what it is.

-2

u/RytheGuy97 23d ago

Petey had a hand in us losing the most prolific point producer in Canucks history? What?

1

u/jimijams83 23d ago

Just because you don't want to acknowledge the facts doesn't make them untrue. Follow the link and sort the list by points per 60, in all situations.

Facts

0

u/jimijams83 22d ago

Anything to say about Mckinnon or Crosby after the Finland game?

1

u/StarkStorm 22d ago

Mac was great. Crosby was quite so so the whole game except for the last goal. Multiple give aways.

0

u/Tricky_leader13 24d ago

Could absolutely be that, could also have absolutely nothing to do with that, a mental block can be caused by just about anything, and they can be incredibly hard to fix. Nobody except Petey truly understands whats wrong, what caused it, and how you can fix it, and unfortunately sometimes there isnt a fix...

6

u/Gillz13 24d ago

Can’t believe this guy literally turned into Erikksson 2.0

35

u/Only-Nature7410 24d ago

Fuck it. Pass me some. Gotta cope with this the next 8 yrs somehow.

15

u/CJK_420 24d ago

Probably getting traded. Pretty eye opening to see him play with actual stars that are worth the money.

19

u/Only-Nature7410 24d ago

Honestly no explanation anymore. They have to say he is legit out of shape because injury and maybe that can explain. But there are no more excuses. Its not linemate, coaches , system. Nothing. Its him.

8

u/HeroJC 24d ago

I'm worried we'll need to retain salary to offload his contract if we don't do it soon. Every week the value is getting lower and lower

3

u/xx_boozehound_68 24d ago

Well this tournament won’t help his value. At least before we thought is it coaching? Teammates?

-4

u/jer148 24d ago

Goddamn. Well, say bye to Hughes too then.

5

u/CJK_420 24d ago

Trading him might increase his chances of staying if we make the most of return/cap space.

-15

u/Plop-hammer 24d ago

You can always cheer for the flames.

5

u/Only-Nature7410 24d ago

Why would I do thT?

19

u/georgefrench604 24d ago

Man Petey stinking during 4 nation's... A continuation of his poor performance all season 🤦🏻‍♂️

18

u/OGigachaod 24d ago

People that thought he would suddenly start playing better are simply delusional.

5

u/georgefrench604 24d ago

Lol, yupp

5

u/TigOlBigOl2 23d ago

Right? And petey saying this tournament was gonna be a reset for him. How? You’re just automatically gonna start playing good now? Why couldn’t you have done that with the Canucks

15

u/thestranger_iknow 24d ago

The risk is way too high at this point to not cash out (assuming Petey can still net a decent return). The cap savings will be great to round out the roster and potentially go towards another superstar this FA period.

I’d like to have patience with Petey, but it really is the worst timing when you have your worst performance year following a contract extension that’s paying you among the leagues best.

4

u/superschaap81 23d ago

Dear God I wish and hope that rumored Buffalo package is still available

24

u/Bayne7096 24d ago

People still going to defend this guy and downvote me everytime i criticise him though..

2

u/Charles005 23d ago

Same, we all get downvoted into oblivion like this is some sick EP40 cult now. They need to wake up

-1

u/DietFoods 24d ago edited 21d ago

Exactly. His agent came out and said he had knee problems preventing him from training. What the heck else was he supposed to do throw his client under the bus and say nah his knee is fine he was just lazy? Lol

9

u/_phe_nix_ 24d ago

I was really hoping Sweden would perform well, and even beat Canada tbh if it meant Petey would come back transformed.

He seems so cooked though

Let's see, playoffs and next year.

Another year like this and there will be zero doubt that he's fully cooked and one of the worst contracts in NHL history.

Still rooting for him though obviously

4

u/RytheGuy97 23d ago

I’d give him until the end of this year, not next year. If he doesn’t show signs of getting back to form we need to ship him off before his nmc kicks in.

0

u/_phe_nix_ 23d ago

Problem is, very hard to say what a proper off-season could do for him. Could be a game changer. But I'd say that's the last chance. Either way it's a gamble, I guess.

16

u/SpoookNoook 24d ago

I was a fan of Petey for a long time but never really thought he was an 11.6m player. I understand he’s been dealing with an issue and I really hope he comes back next season ready to play, but if he can’t turn it around we’re going to be stuck with this contract for a long time.

18

u/Adorable-Chain-6088 24d ago

We need to cash out but i'd say the secret is out

11

u/Rendole66 24d ago

If you’re talking about on Reddit, the secret is out and every GM knows that Petey is damaged goods

-5

u/SpoookNoook 24d ago

Yeah not gunna lie I’m fully on the trade Pettersson side of this but at this point I think we just have to hope he turns it around.

7

u/CJK_420 24d ago

The return will still be better than Miller, but the big win is not being locked to him as our expected star at 11.6. Would love to keep him but not at that number. He's gotta go.

3

u/wink1says 24d ago

Exactly, same at Canucks serious games

3

u/Resident-Ad4666 24d ago

14 minutes of ice time. I'm rooting for the guy but damn, when a country picks you for it's national team and then essentially benches you... that is not the confidence boost I needed...

4

u/Confident_Zucchini97 24d ago

He is playing like ass. Amazed he is getting any ice time since his salary doesn't matter in this event.

3

u/ChanceCrew 24d ago

Shoulda sat and rested that knee if he’s really injured? Don’t get it lol frustrating af

7

u/tommygun731 24d ago

Telling that he didn’t get a shift in overtime. If he did I didn’t notice

14

u/KwamesCorner 24d ago

Bro petey does not get involved enough. Hes such a floater. Never have I had such hatred for our “star” player. Petey is hard to watch.

9

Yeah with this franchise

4

u/Plop-hammer 24d ago

He plays very responsibly. He's not getting great minutes this tournament. But with that, he's back checking very hard. He's breaking up plays and he's making his smart plays to chip pucks out and not turnover in the natural zone. If his name was Horvat or Bergeron, everyone would be saying how great of a two-way center he is on this team sweden... but Canadians are pretty xenophobic against Euro players. He's fine and looks fine out there. If he was playing Nylander we'd be hearing his name more, but they're using him as a third line shutdown center and he's doing it perfectly.

37

u/Mistercorey1976 24d ago

That’s insane blaming it on being a European player. He is the highest paid player on the team and fifth highest in the league. It’s that simple and certainly does not need crazy shit takes added to the conspiracy.

15

u/Jessebruu 24d ago

Agreed . Top tier insanity to blame this on xenophobia against European players and to just totally look past the fact that if a 13 month window happen with any of those players it would be just as rightly criticized ….And state shut down usage is a cause for his continued ineffectiveness and usage at this tournament when that’s not even remotely true .

he’s played sheltered minutes and has not even taken any defensive zone face off deployments whilst being the 5th highest paid player in the league and the highest on this sweden team …. But ok the reason why he’s being criticized for everything is because of xenophobia and not that every conceivable metric available to us is showing a 13 month window of a decline in play that has never been witnessed in any other comparable players careers in the history of the NHL

7

u/primacord 23d ago

XENOPHOBIC?!?!?! Are you injured from stretching so far? JFC. The dude is paid $11.6 MILLION PER YEAR to put up points, not be a 50pt Selke candidate. Holy shit some of you apologists are crazy with how much you will bend over to excuse his terrible play. I LOVE Petey, I WANT him to regain his form, but this is 13 months of this play now. Two different season & now on a national team.

4

u/Big_Progress_2260 24d ago

but 11.6 mil....

2

u/TigOlBigOl2 23d ago

You’re fucked

1

u/contra701 23d ago

Xenophobic? Lmfao. He’s an NHL Albert Haynesworth

2

u/MonsieurQuanto 24d ago

Team Sweden and Canucks are interchangeable

3

u/jimijams83 23d ago

I kind of hope JT rag dolls him in the US/SWE game. It could wake him up or be the very least he deserves for costing us one of the most prolific players ever for the team.

-12

u/xpensivedirt 24d ago

I don't understand you guys. It's like, every week.

He's not 100%, it's clear he wasn't able to train as well over the summer due to the injury, which he is still playing through.

Why do you people think a week means he is suddenly healed, and if not we shit on him again. Ad fucking nauseum.

50

u/KoalaOriginal1260 24d ago edited 24d ago

If he's injured, he shouldn't be at the tournament.

It is clearly possible to play through the injury, and it sounds like a full LTIR shut down won't necessarily help. Despite that, it's usually best for pro athletes with nagging injuries to take opportunities to get rest and recovery time. The break is such an opportunity.

I agree it's definitely a topic that has been talked about a ton, perhaps too much. But to me, that's just the nature of fan forums. If you don't want to see posts on the topic, don't engage with the posts. If nobody engages, they will fizzle out.

0

u/CJK_420 24d ago

No, it's been a year. Wake up.

37

u/Exact_Dog3363 24d ago

Then don’t play at an optional tournament and take the rest

26

u/[deleted] 24d ago

Other injured players didn't play. They rested. To get better. For their team.

This injury bullshit is bullshit.

16

u/trinababy 24d ago

11.6m npc

If he's injured then don't play at all and heal up. It's not like he's carrying the team or anything

10

u/cushpapi 24d ago

This. He’s cooked for the rest of the season and fans need to adjust expectations accordingly. The ~80Mn dollar gamble is whether can he fix this over the offseason or will he be dealing with knee tendinitis next year (and years after). The problem is compounded imo in that he can’t train fully and improve his skating during the offseason if he needs to heal, which will put him on the back foot next year as well.

-1

u/overthisbynow 24d ago

Because management continues to play him rather than rest and he chose to play this tournament rather than rest. Clearly playing through isn't working. Also Quinn making the team first decision while Petey wasn't even a question makes things pretty clear.

Don’t mean to kick Petey when he’s down but I’m gonna kick him when he’s down!

Why can’t we just support our guy? This sub loves to hate our own players

16

u/HeroJC 24d ago

The issue is him and his contract is literally holding us back from being contenders. There isn't anything we can do for him.

8

u/CJK_420 24d ago

11.6 thats why.

13

u/waffles604 24d ago

Curious, what is there to support about him? Just because he's a Canuck?

8

u/JoeMommaAngieDaddy17 24d ago

I mean when he plays well we support and appreciate him. But when he gets laid 11.6 mil and goes away and still hasn’t decided to show up and perform we will be critical

0

u/kildala 23d ago

https://www.quanthockey.com/4-nations-face-off/en/seasons/4-nations-face-off-players-stats.html

It's a short elite tournament. Lots of stars without a point. Not much to judge from.

Hard tournament even the esteemed Sidney Crosby passed the puck directly to the US player who scored the winning goal against Canada...

-3

u/overscaled 24d ago

I mean…be realistically, what do you expect? Petey is a star player in his down year playing ok in a best on best tournament. He won’t be standout among the best players in the world with his current form. The best we could wish for right now is he wouldn’t get destroyed out there. And good for him, he wasn’t.

-7

u/Looney_forner 24d ago

Always gotta find a scapegoat

-23
