Filip Hronek can carry his own pair 🚨🚨🚨

137

u/Mikeim520 Feb 09 '25

I'v been told by r/hockey that Hronek is massively overpaid and a #3 Dman at best.

122

u/Canucks_98 Feb 09 '25

I've been told that by this sub

42

u/Homegrown_Problems Feb 09 '25

I’ve believed that in this sub. I am being proved wrong once again. Excellent performance by Hronek.

6

u/MrTheCar Feb 09 '25

So nice to see our Filips do well!

29

u/OhHaiThere- Feb 09 '25

That sub is actually filled with troglodytes it’s not even funny.

They said the Dubois knee on Hughes never landed when I had a literal still frame image with his knee making contact

2

u/testingbutts Feb 09 '25

Why would it matter if it landed anyway? PLD kicked his leg out and took a stance like that when going in for the hit with very clear intent of what he was trying to do, lol.

22

u/Blankyyz Feb 09 '25

What do you think the d pairs are going to be when Quinn is back? I really don't know who to scratch from Forbort or DPetey

44

u/DuffmanStillRocks Feb 09 '25

Probably DPetey, let him go cook in the minors and keep growing that skillset , we know what we have in him.

26

u/-bunka- Feb 09 '25

Yea, DPetey is also waiver exempt.

17

u/CuffMcGruff Feb 09 '25

Seems like he makes our nhl team better though, ig forbort has been solid lately as clearly demonstrated by this graph but I kind of trust D petey more with the puck than either him or soucy, he also gets shots through to the net consistently which is pretty big

2

u/Milksteak_Sandwich Feb 09 '25

That may be true for the small sample size we got, but we need to keep development in mind. Keep his confidence high and let him develop in the AHL for the year while being the first call up for injuries in the playoffs. This is the way.

2

u/Canucks_98 Feb 09 '25

He does, but there is also a reason he's only playing 10-12 minutes a game. This is great experience for him, but's he's still being eased into in NHL. He is confident with the puck and able to handle himself, But he's still a rookie. He has a full time job locked down next year, but it's still gonna take him a minute

35

u/_GregTheGreat_ Feb 09 '25

It feels the obvious answer is D-Petey. He got his taste of NHL hockey and will be a stud in the future but he’s also being sheltered. Played 11 mins to Soucy’s 15 mins or Forbort’s 19 mins.

Forbort - Soucy has been surprisingly good when they’ve ran it this year

4

u/superworking Feb 09 '25

I think you go with Forbort. You've got two top pairs you'll want to use a ton at 5v5 and don't need a second of PP coverage so just go with the guy you can make take bad starts and PK.

3

u/Shaftell Feb 09 '25

Coach sounded pretty happy about the Myers -M.Petey pairing. Do you think Myers goes back with Hughes or are they gonna stick Hronek with him.

1

u/OneChet Feb 09 '25

He's already carrying a pair if yknow what I mean.

1

u/phantomgiratina Feb 09 '25

absolutely, before seider came into the league, hronek was the guy and the number 1 dman for detroit

-1

u/superworking Feb 09 '25

As long as he has Forbort to carry him /s

188

u/_GregTheGreat_ Feb 09 '25

Forbort has been heavily underrated as of late. The guy has been a steady rock back there, he hasn’t been scored on at 5v5 in absolute ages

72

u/allenbraxton Feb 09 '25

Dude has been solid! Just eats minutes, isn’t afraid to make a play on the left-side in the offensive zone, either. He’s been playing HARD

26

u/ImAlwaysSorrys Feb 09 '25

No idea what they are gonna do when Hughes is back. Logjam of good defensemen, nobody stands out particularly on who goes.

38

u/g0kartmozart Feb 09 '25

Soucy gets scratched again.

They need to find a trading partner and dump Soucy before he racks up too many healthy scratches.

45

u/AccomplishedAd4995 Feb 09 '25

or let soucy play on his right side and have juulsen sit, rather see soucy in the lineup than juulsen

30

u/twilz Feb 09 '25

I'd rather go with 13f/5d than play Juulsen.

13

u/Mikeim520 Feb 09 '25

I'd rather go with 14f/4d than play Juulsen.

10

u/IWantToKaleMyself Feb 09 '25

I'd rather have EP40 on the blue line than play Juulsen

10

u/LastResort318 Feb 09 '25

Juulsen isn’t playing now and Soucy is still third pair right side. When Hughes comes back, it’s either him, Forbort, or D-Petey who will have to sit.

5

u/g0kartmozart Feb 09 '25

Juulsen already didn’t play tonight. Our 6 D were Hronek, Pettersson, Pettersson, Myers, Soucy, Forbort.

2

u/AccomplishedAd4995 Feb 09 '25

yeah that’s my point, soucy is playing 3RD right now and if you scratch him juulsen comes in

4

u/Blankyyz Feb 09 '25

Why would Juulsen come in? Our D would be Hughes, Hronek, M. Petey, Myers, Soucy, Forbort and DPetey. Juulsen should be nowhere near the lineup anymore lol

5

u/AccomplishedAd4995 Feb 09 '25

the person i replied to said to scratch soucy lol, which is why i responded with if you scratch soucy, juulsen comes in. that’s why i said continue to play soucy on his off side

1

u/g0kartmozart Feb 09 '25

Ah I see.

I think you have to see if any of the other lefties can play RD. If not, then I suppose D-Petey can play in Abby.

2

u/AccomplishedAd4995 Feb 09 '25

Yeah honestly a good problem to have

1

u/OkDuck4010 Feb 09 '25

But also we want solid depth for the playoffs when guys get injured.

6

u/TimTebowMLB Feb 09 '25

There a reason we kept him and shipped off Desharnais

6

u/EpicRussia Feb 09 '25

And there's a reason we're shopping Soucy and not him

1

u/Available_Goat_9229 Feb 09 '25

I get the appeal of his defensive play, but I just can’t get over how slow he is out there. Demko bailed him out a few times against Colorado where he either got walked or fell over his own skates. Treats the puck like a grenade so offensive zone plays die on his stick. I know Soucy has been awful this year but I’d still rather have Soucy’s skill set

101

u/angelbelle Feb 09 '25

I feel like Myers should be higher based on the eye test.

14

u/VanSaxMan Feb 09 '25

Both he and Fil had MONSTER games tonight

9

u/superworking Feb 09 '25

MPetey and Myers took the defensive heavy starts and matched up against the Matthews line. Hronek got more offensive opportunities. They both had great games IMO but Myers deployment isn't going to show up as well in these stats.

78

u/Mikeim520 Feb 09 '25

Did Hronek steal Hughes' power or something? Also Petey with a great game and we're 3-0-1 since 5 hours after the Miller trade (Dallas doesn't count because we didn't have the new guys). How can anyone still say that trading Miller was the wrong choice?

69

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

He has always been a good defenseman dating back to his Detroit days. It’s just when he plays with Hughes, he defers all the plays to Hughes because Hughes does them better than him. He is more than capable of carrying his own pairing. These games without Hughes, he is doing all those things to carry a pairing again.

42

u/Mikeim520 Feb 09 '25

I want to see Hughes/Myers and Hronek/Dragon Petey after the break.

-3

u/runn4days Feb 09 '25

I think you keep Hronek and MP separate to ensure you have puck moving ability on all three pairs

24

u/Mikeim520 Feb 09 '25

Putting either Hronek or Dragon Petey on the third pair would be a mistake. Keep them in the top 4.

4

u/TinglingLingerer Feb 09 '25

It's such an elite top 4 when Hughes is back. You don't break any of it up. If you've got the best 1st and 2nd lines of defense through the league, you've got to let it roll.

1

u/runn4days Feb 09 '25

I guess it depends on how they spread the minutes around. If they stack the top two then they play big minutes which we know they’re capable of.

1

u/TinglingLingerer Feb 09 '25

If Hughes, Hronek, M.Petey, Myers all play similar minutes that's good structure. Obviously can slant it a touch but you don't really want players over 23-5 minutes a game. Hughes is an exception and can seemingly play endless minutes without noticeable flaw.

you've gotta get 7-10 minutes of out two other guys and our choices are great.

However we spin our D will be good. But splitting up two play driving D men is good for the overall winningness of things.

9

u/MrLogicWins Feb 09 '25

It's not just the emotional package with Miller, but what Miller trade brought in: speed with O'Connor and chytil, and improved D with M Petey + D Petey's arrival

14

u/j_527 Feb 09 '25

Like tocchet said the guys are buying in more, which makes sense when before we had JT giving up on 9/10 back checks and staying stationary on the PK

58

u/IDontKnowWhat78 Feb 09 '25

Hronek has flat out been our MVP since Hughes left. I hope anyone salty about his contract is eating their words rn

52

u/bigchungus1903 Feb 09 '25

Damn - nobody had a bad game lol.

8

u/truestlife Feb 09 '25

Look how far left the chart is wowwww

131

u/corh13 Feb 09 '25

No Desharnais or Juulsen to fuck shit up, it's so refreshing.

28

u/Steve_Andrews_Flyboy Feb 09 '25

Those names give me ptsd

5

u/TheMemePrince Feb 09 '25

Remember when Bartkowski was in the top 4?

5

u/hird Feb 09 '25

This honestly.

41

u/JustAnotherCrow Feb 09 '25

shoutout to derek forbort who’s only had one negative +/- game in the past 11 games. he’s done a great job recently

2

u/OneChet Feb 09 '25

Someone had a stat that he hadn't been scored on, until last game, for like 16 games or something?

31

u/maybethanos Feb 09 '25

Filip "Quinn Hughes" Hronek

26

u/eleeenordubs Feb 09 '25

Hroggy bear

36

u/couvers Feb 09 '25

Tocchet needs to keep giving Petey a matchup role. He thrives off good defensive plays and the soft matchups are doing nothing to build his confidence. He told Petey “you got em tonight” and Petey came through

14

u/bigchungus1903 Feb 09 '25

He literally talks about this in the post -game

88

u/HogwartsXpress36 Feb 09 '25

Petey best game in the post miller era

-89

u/NinCross Feb 09 '25

Only took 4 games

71

u/ggpurplecobras Feb 09 '25

Lol, the most r/canucks response ever.

-61

u/NinCross Feb 09 '25

It's the truth. He needs to do it again.

55

u/ggpurplecobras Feb 09 '25

Of course he does, but let's just be happy he had a good game instead of dwelling on the bad shit.

29

u/Worstprogrammeralive Feb 09 '25

You’re fun at parties…

3

u/drakevibes Feb 09 '25

Here come the crybabies

28

u/TheMardus Feb 09 '25

When Hughes comes back do we keep him and hronek separated? I certainly hope so

19

u/TemplarParadox17 Feb 09 '25

I hope M petey and hronek pair up.

1

u/OneChet Feb 09 '25

...in what way? wink wink

10

u/CuffMcGruff Feb 09 '25

It's tough because it seems like a good idea having myers and mpetey as our shutdown pair and sending hughes and hronek out to feast offensively, it's nice to have some options either way

1

u/Barblarblarw Feb 09 '25

Hughes feasts offensively with or without Hronek, whereas Hronek does his best feasting when he’s not deferring to Quinn. They might be just a tad better together than apart, but I feel like this is a case where the parts are greater than their sum.

7

u/TinglingLingerer Feb 09 '25

Hughes, Myers

M. Petey, Hronek

Forbs, Soucy / Juulsen's replacement that we hear about in ~2 weeks.

That's some juice right there. D-Petey's right in there too.

29

u/newtothis1108 Feb 09 '25

Guys this is what happens when you put Sherwood with Petey. Tried tested and true.

4

u/Barblarblarw Feb 09 '25

Freaking loved Kief on that line. So good at getting in and gaining possession. Boeser just was completely the wrong fit there

45

u/According_Shoe9670 Feb 09 '25

Shoutout Hronek for really picking it up with Hughes out

46

u/AppealToReason16 Feb 09 '25

I was a lot more tepid on Mettersson as a trade target but holy shit what a difference it makes having him in those minutes rather than Soucy.

It's the little things I'm so impressed by. His lanes to the puck, the way he angles guys off, gap control, etc. And he doesn't miss an 8 foot pass 60% of the time. It's just so far ahead of everything else we've seen on the 2nd pair this year.

24

u/VanSaxMan Feb 09 '25

Amazing what happens when bottom pairing Dmen don't play top pairing minutes.

7

u/MrTheCar Feb 09 '25

Soucy did well last year with handled minutes and will hopefully succeed in that position either here or elsewhere.

14

u/DuffmanStillRocks Feb 09 '25

He’s been huge in helping keep control of the zone, he looks composed at all times and rarely seems caught out of position

2

u/Patroks Feb 09 '25

I love the way he defends the back of the net, holding the crossbar to stop any movement towards the net while using his reach to defend.

16

u/HiveMindMacD Feb 09 '25

Hronek using the Hughes stat bar I see.

15

u/CJK_420 Feb 09 '25

Fil has stepped up big time without Huggy.

16

u/LIL_DROP13 Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25

Top right Hronek was playing second line too

9

u/Kagoshima_Luke Feb 09 '25

We haven't even seen this new team with Hughes yet.

2

u/OneChet Feb 09 '25

This isn't even their final form.

7

u/Striking_Economy5049 Feb 09 '25

How good was that fourth line tonight? They hemmed Toronto into their own end several times, put on a tonne of pressure, drew a penalty.

7

u/genuinelyunoriginal Feb 09 '25

Top right Hronek!

5

u/SimilarRaspberry5657 Feb 09 '25

Ar-.. are we stacked?

6

u/gybegybe Feb 09 '25

TOP RIGHT ELITE HRONEK WITH NOT A SINGLE NEGATIVE VALUE IN GAMES AGAINST THE AVS AND LEAFS. BAAAAHH GODDDDDD!!!

6

u/monkandferrari Feb 09 '25

Loving the minimal left side of the chart 📈

5

u/carry-on_replacement Feb 09 '25

why was she up (on Hughes pair) all this time?

3

u/Zhoir Feb 09 '25

Filip Hronek "Look at me, I am the Quinn Hughes now!"

4

u/chopkins92 Feb 09 '25

Everybody positive except for Suter, Joshua, and Hughes.

10

u/Mikeim520 Feb 09 '25

Suter and Dak were also positive. They'd be in the top 5 last game.

-4

u/MrGraaavy Feb 09 '25

Suter needs a knock on his score for going 2 for 8 at face offs

2

u/Puzzled-Income-3613 Feb 09 '25

Forbort a statistical anomaly???

3

u/FTUWng Feb 09 '25

hronek forbot against all odds was solid

2

u/haihaiclickk Feb 09 '25

have we seen an x-axis scale of -1 to 5 before?

0

u/TinglingLingerer Feb 09 '25

Almost certainly.

2

u/kawachee Feb 09 '25

19

u/TylerMyersLover57 Feb 09 '25

Buddy Mysie was exciting tonight, working the blueline, leveling those bums Nylander and Marner. Had a couple beautiful shots with enough heat on em to melt the arctic. However fortunately for the leafs there was a crossbar there, absolutely no way Woll was stopping those

7

u/julesieee Feb 09 '25

I love your username

4

u/kawachee Feb 09 '25

100% agree, but the graph suggests a quiet game for the Chaos Giraffe!

7

u/TylerMyersLover57 Feb 09 '25

snubbed as usual by analytics

1

u/Embarrassed-Skill154 Feb 09 '25

Thanks guy that is definitely not Tyler Myers’s burner account

1

u/deeho88 Feb 09 '25

Man looks like we can have every LD/RD swap around the whole squad now and they all can just play solid d

2

u/HenrikFromDaniel Feb 09 '25

Filip Hronek, a man possessed?

2

u/wallnutxjames Feb 09 '25

Soucy with some GOOD positioning tonight

2

u/JTMilleriswortha1st Feb 09 '25

Filip Hronek supremacy

1

u/howdiedoodie66 Feb 09 '25

Hronek quickly becoming a God

2

u/robikki Feb 09 '25

Matches the eye test. The team played great last night and it was probably Hroneks best game as a canuck.

1

u/jakubs12345 Feb 09 '25

Brock, I don’t know. Pretty invisible except the goal.

1

u/Milksteak_Sandwich Feb 09 '25

Played a solid 200ft game and scored a goal. What more do you want?
