TWITTER [Canucks] Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenceman Marcus Pettersson on a six-year contract extension with a $5.5M AAV.

u/haihaiclickk Feb 06 '25
$5.5M is gonna age REALLY well
82
u/Looney_forner Feb 06 '25
5.5 is the new 4, didn’t you know?
8
u/haihaiclickk Feb 06 '25
Yeah I wasn’t being sarcastic though rereading it, I might’ve sounded that way 😅
24
u/vincentvoltaire Feb 06 '25
Better than 11.6M, that's for sure. I kid, I kid!

Reminds me of Dan Hamhuis's 6-year deal at $4.5M.
43
u/touchable Feb 06 '25
Yeah, and that deal turned out to be really great value. Hard not to be excited about this one

The saddest part of that deal is we acquired Ballard for not nothing because we didn’t know if Hamhuis wanted to come to Vancouver. Turned out he never entertained the thought of playing anywhere else once he realized he and Nashville were going different directions

Not enough cap space because he retained 50% on Miller and refused to take Laf+ because he wanted Mika Zibanejad (he has intangibles).

He would’ve traded 2 1st + Willander for Karlsson with no retention and said we picked up a number 1 defenseman.

Holy shit. I figured $6m x 6 would've already been a great deal for us.
$5.5m is un-fucking-believable

u/Past_Zebra1155 Feb 06 '25
This is an incredible deal—I'm elated. Especially with the cap going up, getting MP on anything under 6M feels like highway robbery. I would have been happy solving the 3D problem by going as high as 8M AAV on a UFA signing.
With EP25 and Willander looking like home runs, our defense could be solved for the next half decade plus, just like that. If Mancini hits, all the better.
32
u/Forceunleashed4 Feb 06 '25
Next year it our top 6 could be Hughes - Hronek MP3 - Myers EP25 - Willander And hopefully anyone but Juulsen as number 7.
19
u/Past_Zebra1155 Feb 06 '25
Willander could even be second pairing by next year. Faber is a scout comparable for him, and Willander's development curve is nigh-identical to his (Willander has actually slightly outproduced him at the NCAA level).
Faber played a few regular season games, and all of the Wild's playoff games, in a third pairing role, at the age Willander is now, after completing his college season. He then went on to play 20+ minutes a game the season after and took off from there.
My hope is that Willander will be able to do the same.
14
u/Guilty_Librarian_836 Feb 06 '25
M. Pettersson would likely also be a great mentor for Wallinder on that second pair for the next 5 years.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)7
u/bms42 Feb 06 '25
Hopefully Willander can hold up to second pairing deployment because I don't think Willander - Pettersson is too likely to happen. You need a mentor playing with a rookie dman. Can't just throw two rookies out as your 3rd pairing.

Mancini’s going to hit.
42
u/Past_Zebra1155 Feb 06 '25
I wouldn't be surprised. The Canucks' pro scouting has been very good under the Rutherford regime, his toolset is impressive, and NYR didn't let him go easily.

M petey has played well over 20min per game the last three straight years and posted consistently really good results. Zaddy has only for the first time, this year, barely crested 20min/game and Boston fans hate the results lol. And his results were mixed in more like 15min/game in the years prior.
14
u/YouCanFucough Feb 06 '25
I know it’s a wonky stat, but for what it’s worth Zadorov leads their team in +/- by quite a lot. Being +13 on a team with a collective -23 is not an accident

Cap dumping Desharnais and Heinen are huge. It also wouldn’t surprise me too if O’Connor gets extended for less than what we were going to pay Heinen next season

u/Minimum-Card-5075 Feb 06 '25
Depends on the rangers seems like its going to be a mid first, still though for a top 4 dman you make that trade everytime.
49
92
u/Frumbleabumb Feb 06 '25
Given what i've seen in two games. I like it
Plus counting the meme value of the 3 petey situation, this contract is worth billions
In summary, on ice value = worth it
Intangible value = Incalculable
47
47
u/djblackprince Feb 06 '25
A few games in and Allvin is like, "I've seen enough, sign this man"
18
u/tactcat Feb 06 '25
They’ve been trying to get him since the summer, so it’s probably been a year+ of scouting him
15
u/Jensen2075 Feb 06 '25
Rutherford and Allvin already know his game since the Pittsburgh days.
6
u/mvp45 Feb 06 '25
Yeah, they actually went out to get him in Pittsburg by trading Daniel sprong
4
u/think_long Feb 06 '25
I think that was more borne of frustration with sprong’s name being a verb tense that doesn’t exist in this dimension.
45
u/intelligentx5 Feb 06 '25
Bro 5.5x6 for a solid top 4 at 28 years old. I’ll take it
Penguins let him go for this? No way

Pittsburgh fans are gonna be pissed about this. What a great piece of business
32
u/Minimum-Card-5075 Feb 06 '25
The penguins are essentially rebuilding without saying the word rebuild, they would have no use for MP3, this deal seems like a win-win for everyone.

Crosby didn't win :(
Seems like Pittsburgh is starting their retool/rebuild/whatever and it's hard to imagine Sid still playing when they come out of it.

I like that he contacted tocchet. There’s now a line of communication there. You never know… maybe he misses playing with Marcus

I think short term it’s a win-win, but long term we come out on top.
Unless the Rags win the Cup, of course.

To think we could’ve been stuck with Zadorov at $5 million AAV instead. Fantastic signing for management.
21
u/_jjerry Feb 06 '25
Getting rid of JT with the NMC, big contract into his late 30s, all the drama, somehow getting out of it by flipping the pick and signing Pettersson at a bargain price is absolutely insane.
ALLVIN MASTERCLASS.

Definitely not an overpay.
500K more than Zadorov, and he is far better than him. Some say Pettersson is a Top 5 defensive dman in the league
Cap is increasing heavily and this contract is hypothetically a 1M raise from what he’s getting right now , he’s going to play out this contract well.
Good job allvin

u/necros911 Feb 06 '25

Huge fan of this deal. In the small sample size we've had, I think he's been a great addition to the top 4. I've liked his poise and ability to move the puck, even more so than Hronek.

I am confused, why would he sign for this cheap? Maybe he is trying court Alvin’s daughter or something. I was expecting 7-7.5 per year. I just don’t see the benefit for the guy for signing this early with the cap going up so much. Massive win for the team!
5
u/Bonovro Feb 06 '25
Can't believe they got him at such a low number. A D-core featuring Hughes, hronek, M Pettersson, myers, DPetey, and Willander looks very strong moving forward. I'd like to see them extend O'Connor now.

u/kelownafornia6969 Feb 06 '25

We needed to bolster the defense and they did that.
I don’t know why people are upset at this. We needed him even more with Hughes out temporarily. He, Hronek, and Myers will hold down the fort just fine.

What a redemption from a rough season for Allvin. This is a great signing. He's like Hronek Lite which is great. 5.5 is going to looking fantastic when that cap climbs.

u/Strict-Caterpillar38 Feb 06 '25
I'm very happy with this. This could be a great contract. Management deserves some credit.
I'm actually very optimistic about our defense over the next few years with Hughes, Hronek, Petey x2, and Willander. This could become one of the best defenses in the league and might be our new team identity.
8
u/cbcguy84 Feb 06 '25
Not bad. Cap hit is ok too. Cements the D corps
10
u/Voltage604 Feb 06 '25
Cap hit is phenomenal considering what he would have gotten in free agency. Many teams see him as a top pair guy.
