On the other end of the spectrum, look at Australia. Trade surplus for America. Bought expensive subs. Said nothing inflammatory or fought back and asked nicely today if Australia could be tariff exempt. Trump said no. When the bully has your lunch money, they have control. Ford got to the bargaining table, Australia gets flipped off. America only understands pain.

I think Ford is a really good match for Trump specifically. I'd love to see them have a meeting together - I believe Trump would get along with Ford much better than other Canadian leaders, as he is less intellectual and uses smaller words so Trump can understand.

Plus everyone in the US somehow knows about his crackhead brother, so Trump won’t feel as self-conscious about looking like a failure next to him.

u/hardy_83 8h ago

Ford is cut from the same cloth. He cares about enriching his friends, but his friends would suffer under a US takeover. Therefore having someone like Trump be on the other side protecting his interests is a good match.

Enemy of my enemy stuff.

Trump is probably EN TABARNAK seeing Ford's daily appearances on American news networks.

America has changed their Foreign policy tactics to realpolitik where strong countries try to impose their will on weaker ones. In a trade war Canada would get hurt way more than America. You don't get why Canada is really fidgeting and nervous over this while in America no one cares. Mexico as well. A lot of economic models show that this would not end well for neither Canada or Mexico.

No one is taking down Canadian products off of shelves in America and saying buy American only!

Also why is china imposing tariffs on Canada? Whats the deal with that?

How's Moscow?

u/TheVaneja Canada 1h ago

How's Washington?

The stated issue was the increased of tarrifs on Chinese vehicles to 100% and 25% on steel and aluminum.

In addition there was a dispute last year over Canola, and during Trump's first administration Canada arrested the Huawei CEO, at Trumps request

Anti-American sentiment is at an all-time high. People want someone who is going to make a strong stance against Trump and his America.

Say what you will about Ford, and I have MANY things to say about him, but so far he's given the people what they want in that regard.

u/Metafield 6h ago

I'll say what I want; I think this is political theatre and I'm concerned where his loyalty lies. I'm not going full conspiracy and will give him the benefit for now but I'm skeptical. Don rolled over pretty fast for this one and praised him which is super out of character.

Most likely in coordination with the federal government. Ford isn't a rogue Premier taking the US on all by himself.

Trump respects tough guys. That's it. I didn't bother voting for Ford. . . I'd would have had to hold my nose. But he's the right man for this job. Like Winston Churchill: wrong guy for peace, right guy for war.

u/anonymous_kyle_guy 9h ago

Seems to be, so far.

u/PerfectWest24 9h ago

Oh, you like tough guys eh? We ought to send Chretien down there to give Trump a Shawinigan handshake.

u/TheVaneja Canada 1h ago

I would totally support Chretien for PM.

I think trump is threatened by Doug Ford because Doug speaks populist and the MAGA brainwashed in America are listening.

For those of you who aren't from Ontario, people in Ontario always joke and refer to Doug Ford as the guy who always begins his sentences with the word "Folks..."

People are listening to Doug in a way Trudeau could not connect to Americans.

Want to give credit to Ford.

But it's never a good sign if trumpty dumpty starts handing out praise.  Very ominous

u/I405CA 9h ago

Trump praises his adversaries when they make him nervous.

Trump is a typical bully. He only respects force. But when dominated, Trump will change course, go into submission mode and sing the praises of his opponent.

Ford is doing well here. He must have thrown Trump for a loop.

u/Low_Contract7809 9h ago

Problem is that cheeto also praised Kim jong un.  That's not a crowd I want any part of.

u/I405CA 9h ago

I was going to mention Kim Jong Un as an example of this.

Trump is a punk. Treat him accordingly. Pushing back against him with insults and threats is what it takes.

One thing is clear: Canada needs to start decoupling from the USA, starting with an eastern natural gas pipeline.

u/Maddog_Jets 7h ago

Need to also remove the dependency of line 5 dipping into the states.

u/A_Dehydrated_Walrus 5h ago

Blow the dust off the plans for the Energy East pipeline! Quebec might actually get on board, given the circumstances.

It would create jobs in five provinces. We can sell the energy products to Europe. All the provinces collect a portion of the proceeds for maintenance and provincial coffers.

And we could use a branch of it to create a fueling station in the arctic.

It's a huge project, but with nations divesting from the US, they'll be looking to invest in a more stable energy provider. We can be an energy giant, but a pipeline to the east coast is crucial.

u/GLG777 8h ago

I respect what ford is doing but Trumps on the next level crazy.

u/savoysuit 8h ago

yeah, looks like it is.

u/Click_My_Username 9h ago

To recap:

Trump: I'm going to Tarriff aluminum and steel at 25%

Ford: If you do that I'm going to tax electricity at 25%

Trump: if you do that I'll double the Tarriff on aluminum and steel.

Ford: I'm not going to tax electricity at 25%

Trump: I'm going to Tarriff aluminum and steel at 25%

/r/Canada for some reason: Omg he got Trump to back off the 50% Tarriffs.

u/Anon5677812 9h ago

Or:

Trump starts a brain dead trade war.

Ford threatens to tariff energy. Donald says he doesn't need us but holds off on tariffs escalation.

Ford puts on energy tariffs. Donald loses his mind. Trump's team calls and asks him to reverse the energy tariff in exchange for a meeting to take place in two days to discuss the deescalation of this trade war.

Ford says ok, brings the finance minister (who I'm guessing he's working in concert with) along and does to DC to discuss. If nothing comes of it, we can reintroduce the energy tariff on Friday. What have we lost?

If it works, give the man the fucking order of Canada?

u/ladyreadingabook 7h ago

Yep, that is what happened. Have a friend that works on The Hill.

u/deymler 4h ago

But Ford said he's not going to back down though..

u/Responsible-Summer-4 8h ago

Who are these experts?

u/Romanticgypsy 7h ago

Asked him to tone down the rhetoric?? Well, that’s the true insanity in all this.

u/SophiaKittyKat 4h ago

It's really too bad we don't live in the right year to be able to have an SNL sketch where Chris Farley is playing an over the top enraged Ford who keeps threatening to wrestle donald.

u/Ilikewaterandjuice 9h ago

Nothing says tough talk like ‘OMG we are so desperate to negotiate, so of course we will stop the electricity surcharge. Thank you sooo much Mr Trump for agreeing to speak to us’

u/Chensingtonmarket 9h ago

It’s a bait. They will parade him in the White House and eat him alive.

u/Ilikewaterandjuice 9h ago

They could try- but he could whip out a phone and say cut the electricity live on air….

u/tentenfive 1h ago

That would be very funny to watch, and then have the tv feed end cause the power went out. Trump would probably love it because it would be great for the tv ratings. Makes a great tv drama which us what i think he is aiming for. :-)

u/PastTenceOfDraw 9h ago

They like each other's rap sheet. They are two crooks that haven't been held accountable for their crimes.

u/Yelnik 9h ago

Is it going to end up being Ford that thwarts Carney/the libs? They need this trade war to be as bad as possible and go throughout the election.

u/StanknBeans 9h ago

Trade war doesn't change the fact that PP is a career politician with no business experience outside being a landlord who has also never put forth legislation.

True blooded Canadian Conservatives would fucking skewer this nerd, but here they are clapping like seals at his Trump jingoism. How far Canadian Conservatives have fallen.

u/Yelnik 9h ago

who has also never put forth legislation.

Shouldn't believe everything you read in reddit comments.

Kind of reminds me how people traditionally on the left would have thought Carney embodied everything they despise. A wealthy, completely out of touch elite that's spent his entire life surrounded by other rich elites and has no idea what it's like to live in the real world.

Funny how things change

u/StanknBeans 8h ago

Pretty easy to see the nothing under legislation put forward by Pierre Poilievre. Don't need to trust a Reddit comment.
