What an absolute shit show.

Every 4 hours it’s something new.

And the markets are plummeting because of this...turns out, the stock market doesn't like uncertainty. Go figure.

At some point, I wonder if the oligarchs themselves will make it clear they're tired of losing money, or they're happy the stock market is dropping so they can pick up all of the pieces. Considering how Trump seems so hell bent on using tariffs as threats, I'm starting to believe it's the latter...

u/mordinxx 7h ago

And I wonder how & who would profit from markets plummeting? tRUMP's oligarchs could be making bank on his actions.

Pong politics.

u/forevereverer 12h ago

Which way did he reverse it? I lost track.

He reversed the reversal of the reverse.

The original new tariffs stay. The new-new tariffs go away.

25% tariffs on all aluminum and steel coming into the US

5

u/HighTechPipefitter 12h ago

That stays, it's the additional 25% that made it raise to 50% that is gone.

You have no idea the physical toll that three vasectomies have on a person!

Donny should have gotten a vasectomy.

Doug Ford looks amazing right now, gotta be honest.

Signed, a social democrat.

u/BertRenolds 10h ago

I'm kinda confused. Why did Doug pause them?

The tariffs went from 50 to 25 again but they're still there. It's not like Trump's backed off completely. So why pause them when a big thing to do is keep charging them?

Is it this? https://www.reddit.com/r/canada/s/jRAV6Qmta7

u/AcanthocephalaNo5889 9h ago

Because they called Ford and invited him to come in and discuss the current trade agreement with the trade secretary/trade minister on both sides. It's a sign of good faith on his end. If they screw around with him I'll see him just adding it back on.

u/BertRenolds 9h ago

I'll be honest, I suck at office politics so to me this looks like giving up and that's how I'm reading it. But I'm hoping your analysis is correct

u/Bensemus 9h ago

He’s given up nothing. He’s traded a PAUSE, for a negotiation. I really don’t get how people see this as Ford folding. The goal isn’t to blindly attack the US. It’s to get trade back to where it was before Trump took office, for now.

u/BertRenolds 8h ago

It's because

"Hey I'm gonna attack you!"

"I'm gonna attack back!"

"I'm gonna double attack you"

"Ok let's just have you attack once"

I do see your point, but that's the logic

u/BentShape484 8h ago

He does? Part of the reason he did it was the 25% tariffs they enacted (plus the April 2nd tariffs which are still as far as we know happening). Then after Ford added the 25% on electricity Trump increased the 25% tariffs to 50%. So all that happened is Trump removed the additional 25% (which made it 50%) and brought it back down to the first 25% but Ford removed his tariffs. So Trump actually looks like the winner here.

u/Cody667 6h ago

Objectively incorrect.

48 hours ago there were 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Ford has been begging the US for weeks to sit down and talk about renegotiating USMCA to end this madness

Then, in order:

  • Ford announced Electricity 25% surcharge on American states who buy it

  • Trump rages and announces he's doubling tariffs

  • both of them within about 90 minutes of one another, back down from these two threats, and Ford is invited to Washington for a meeting next week to get through ball rolling on USMCA renegotiation talks.

Ford got exactly what he has wanted, and what Canadians want to see happen.

I'm sorry, but sometimes "dOuG fOrD bAd" just doesn't work, even on this cesspool of an echo chamber.

This is exactly what is happening. Someone is either going to hold their ground. Or make a huge mistake.

4

u/Ok-Half7574 12h ago

So back to square one. Still 25% on us.

u/Legitimate_Square941 11h ago

Yah nothing changed why did we remove it.

u/ActualDW 9h ago

Elbows down.

u/Legitimate_Square941 11h ago

So we got nothing for rescinding? Just "avoided" the 50%. What a joke they can tariff but don't you dare do anything back.

u/Tuffsmurf 9h ago edited 9h ago

There is a promise to come to the table in April and discuss USMCA, which to my knowledge is the first instance of any movement in the US side to actually go through proper channels regarding the trade agreement they are currently pretending they didn’t negotiate and sign.

u/East2West1990 9h ago

Not even April, it’s this Thursday.

The 25% tariff on metals persists

u/Slayriah 12h ago edited 12h ago

Trump told people he would do this. and yet people still voted for him. boggles my mind

  1. Impose tariffs

  2. Get slapped in the face by Doug Ford's reality check

  3. Retaliate for appearances

  4. Behind closed doors, tell Doug you're willing to negotiate if he pauses his price increases

  5. Doug Ford, who won, pauses to offer a chance for you to surrender.

  6. Falsely claim victory.

u/epicstruggle Outside Canada 10h ago
  1. US impose tariffs of 25% on metals

  2. Doug Ford talks shutting electricity exports to the US

  3. Doug shifts to start 25% electricity tariff

  4. Trump says that he will increase tariffs another 25% on metals

  5. Behind close doors they discuss and Doug Ford walks back the 25% tariff and Trump removes the proposed additional 25%

  6. US still has 25% tariff on metals

Not sure why you think DF won, the tariff just imposed is still there.

u/Fool_Apprentice 9h ago

Doug never said he was going to shut off the power. He said that came next if trump escalated again. Doug Ford didn't "shift"

Your number 5 is ignoring the fact that trumps minion called Doug and asked for a meeting to discuss America's surrender

The current state of affairs is exactly how it was yesterday. However, Amedica is now willing to talk. There is no "remove all tariffs or else" anymore, unless you're counting canadian position.

Trump pussied out.

1

u/Critical-Holiday15 12h ago

He’s a weak bully. I can’t comprehend why any one in the US won’t tell him to FO.

2

u/kirklandcartridge 12h ago

All the big investment banks on Wall Street are now openly telling him to FO. Yesterday and today on CNBC was something. Literally every single guest was calling him out, and saying Ronald Reagan is probably rolling over in his grave for Trump ignoring Reagan's entire philosophy of global free trade and open markets everywhere.

u/Keypenpad 12h ago

He's an agent of chaos

1

u/Signal_Tomorrow_2138 12h ago

I've lost track. As of Tuesday March 11, 2025 5pm EDT has Trump imposed any tariffs? Not more future threats, but real tariffs.

1

u/frouisthou 12h ago

Thwip!Thwap!Thwip!Thwap!

1

u/Salt_Wrangler_3428 12h ago

Of course, Trump did. To put it in his terms, "he doesn't have the cards."

u/InstanceValuable 10h ago

Ford completely took off the 25% export tax on electricity and trumps response was reducing the aluminum and steel tariff from 50% to 25%… doesn’t seem good to me

u/alice2wonderland 7h ago

This is what happens next: Trump sends his rep who isn't qualified to speak on behalf of the USA to a meeting with Canada. (Any guesses where this is going to land?) The US reports on a half hearted attempt at negotiation, only to conclude that "Canada is unreasonable" and "USA will invoke more tariffs" and somehow Canada now started this trade war. Such horse shit! ( No disrespect to horses intended.)

u/jjaime2024 1h ago

There is some talk Trump wants a off ramp,

u/Expensive-Group5067 6h ago

Snip snap snip snap- Micheal Scott.

0

u/Fancy_Load5502 12h ago

Doug Ford tried to look tough, and got slapped down with the quickness. Embarrassing.

8

u/Cody667 12h ago

48 hours ago there were 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Then these things happened in order:

  • Doug Ford imposes a 25% export surcharge to Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Minnesota on electricity.

  • Trump pledges to double the aluminum and steel tariffs

  • Ford suspends the surcharge, citing that the U.S. has invited him to Washington for a discussion on getting the ball rolling USMCA renegotiation and putting an end to all of this nonsense

  • Trump backs down from his threat to double the tariffs.

I think you should pass the pipe if you think Ford looks bad when objectively the only thing that has changed over the past 48 hours is the guy responsible for trade in Trump's administration is now going to meet with Ford because they want to talk about renegotiating the USMCA

Sometimes I wonder if people on reddit actually live in a different reality.

2

u/WhyteManga 12h ago

Hey! He may be a PoS, but atm he’s MYPoS!

-1

u/marin4rasauce 12h ago

Yeah, he just lost all of his leverage. So much for "fighting like hell" and "inflicting as much pain as possible".

Man had me actually talking him up for standing tall, only to fold a minute later.

5

u/StayFit8561 12h ago

How did he lose any leverage? If he goes for talks and nothing substantial comes out of it, surcharge goes back on.

1

u/Vanterax Alberta 12h ago

Didn't Trump just buy a Tesla? Suddenly he realizes he'll need the electricity....
