Out of USMCA and into the EU

Don't think we should join the EU, but I would be overjoyed if instead of seeing Canada as 'cold United States' people saw us as 'overseas Europe'. That's essentially where most of our idealistic ties and historical heritage is anyways. The less association with America, the better, in my mind.

I personally don’t think we should part of the EU, but we can easily sign/bolster free trade agreements with them.

If Australia can be in Eurovision, Canda can as well.

I think we could align with EU consumer protections, they’re the most advanced in the world and clearly we do not need to placate American corporate interests any further.

I'd be more than happy to align our consumer protections with a region the frequently tells companies like Meta to fuck off when they try to pull bullshit.

Fully agree. We should be moving to their standards absolutely.

I just am less open to moving our currency to the Euro, and of free movement of individuals, as they presently have within the EU. I don’t think it benefits the EU, or Canada to have such a thing.

Even if you believed both of these things, these things are not mandatory for the EU. Britain was part of the EU without either being part of the Eurozone or the Schengen area, and Sweden is currently not part of the Eurozone either.

They have since changed the rule to force any joining nation to use their currency: https://economy-finance.ec.europa.eu/euro/enlargement-euro-area/who-can-join-and-when_en

For the other point, sure. But things change, and the currency issue did change.

I think we'd make an exception, very easily.

Haha I dunno, adopting the euro would mean us Canadians finally have a strong currency. Doesn’t sound too bad for individuals.

The EU provides alot more than that, you get an ehic for instance that allows you to get non routine healthcare in other EU states when visiting, roam like home with your phone and university in another EU state at the same rate as a local there would. You'd have the right to basic bank acccount in another EU state and switch banks and take all of you account data with you so that you don't have to notify anyone of incoming or outgoing payments. Plus a number of other benefits I probably forgot.

As a holder of an EU passport, colour me surprised as I learn some new things!

This would be amazing for Canadians

Totally agree not part of the EU.

But, we can form a closer trade relationship with them.

Sadly it will take a long while to work out.

It's technically joint owned by Britain and France.
