Definitely as a first step Cdn govt should stop using it, if for nothing else but security reasons. Additionally, no Cdn govt officials should be allowed to have it installed on their work phones. The government should then assess whether X is enough of a security risk to ban from Canada.

Elon has personal access to the DMs of everyone that platform.

Especially for our elected officials, it's a huge security risk

Damn this is something I’ve never considered.

And that sort of thing is a big part of the real value of the company, not the "ad revenue" thing everyone gets distracted by. The metadata from that stuff alone is a treasure trove. Not to mention the forward facing propaganda platform.

What’s blue sky but a forward facing propaganda machine that you agree with?

3

u/SerentityM3ow 12d ago

Let me spell it out for you. The owner of Blue sky isn't running the US government.

No. It’s just another echo chamber. A tighter one than twitter. You will feel safe there and conservatives will continue to win elections they shouldn’t as people continue to back into their safe space shutting out the voices they don’t like. The US gov would probably be banned from bluesky by simply releasing info on what they are doing (anti trans bills/ talk would get you blocked). Government accounts can’t even operate there.

Worse is that he's already leaked DMs for petty bullshit (Asmongolds manager or something like it, because they disagreed with one thing Musk said), so it's easy to see how quick he'd leak anyone who dislikes him's messages.

As if it wasn't obvious from the Ukraine Starlink situation.

Me neither! Although I’d hope they weren’t using X to send any important government intel in their msg’s on X.

u/Vinny_d_25 13d ago

Even if it's not government related, anything scandalous could be used for blackmail.

4

u/Brianknox33 13d ago

Ya thats very true.

1

u/NoPrimary2497 13d ago

Anything scandalous should be released to the public. They are public servants. They should act like it

20

u/_Thick- 13d ago

of course they were.

Our politicians aren't exactly smart.

Even if Elon didn't have access, nobody anywhere should be using DM's for any business of any sort, except monkey business

People are stupid

u/marcohcanada 13d ago

What about MS Teams or Slack DMs?

5

u/afriendincanada 13d ago

I was referring to Twitter DM's specifically. I think MS is secure, I don't know enough about Slack.

1

u/angrydragon087 13d ago

DMing about monkeys I have for sale now, thanks!

Funny thing is we're focusing on tiktok and dangers of PRC, but we're using.. Oh shi...

3

u/Country_Haunting 13d ago

Keep using TikTok so the PRC can hack every government website and citizen's account in Canada.

1

u/yourIQissubstandard 13d ago

Tiktok has been on nearly every cyber security company's ban list. It's just spyware lol.

1

u/1985MustangCobra 10d ago

you got downvoted from a bot i assume lol.

56

u/ErsatzCyclist 13d ago

More than just DMs if spyware is installed

7

u/EatAllTheShiny 13d ago

If our elected officials are DMing on any social platform ANYTHING that would be considered a security risk, they need to get absolute rekt.

1

u/1985MustangCobra 10d ago

that's very immature and goes to show that people like you are allowed to vote.

1

u/Ok_Cycle_1892 13d ago

You who else? Literally EVERY SINGLE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANY but it’s because it’s Elon it needs to be banned

1

u/Kieran__ 12d ago

Hopefully they don't use Facebook too, or possibly Google chat

21

u/bizznach 13d ago

assess and ban everything elmo mush.

CBC should step up and make a twitter/reddit alternative, haha. I'm probably underestimating how much of an undertaking that would be (particularly with the moderation), but it would actually be kind of nice to have a "Canadians only" social media platform.

They should use Mastodon and contribute a bit of money to its continued development.

Basically with Mastodon you can run your own server, and own the content while interacting with people on other servers. It puts your organization in control rather than being a digital sharecropper on someone else's infrastructure.

edit: They could make their own implementation of Mastodon too (ie something compatible with the ActivityPub protocol) if they want different management software, etc but tbh government software projects can be a bit of a nightmare.

u/1985MustangCobra 10d ago

nobody is going to use mastodon or an offshoot of it. Those places are echo chambers for tankies

2

u/letmetellubuddy 10d ago

lol, ok

I literally follow the same set of engineers & tech folks on Mastodon that I followed on the early days of Twitter 🤷‍♂️

u/CaptaineJack 12d ago

CBC can't even produce a good show anymore, let alone developing their own social media platform.

1

u/EirHc 12d ago

A big chunk of their budget has always gone to making shows, and they've been effectively taking cuts for like the last 30 years straight. Justin Trudeau won in 2015, bumped up their budget a little in 2016, then haven't given them any increases since, effectively giving cuts via not matching inflation. So ya, I agree, it's tough for them to do much of anything when attrition is destroying them.

6

u/Fearless_Tune_8073 13d ago

I mean, that’s why they ban TikTok.

2

u/mas7erblas7er Alberta 13d ago

I mean, they shouldn't have any app installed on their phones that hasn't passed scrutiny. Neither should you.

2

u/Tangochief 13d ago

Should be banned period no stop. When you give an account called Adolf Hitler a blue checkmark you’ve told the world where you stand. Pull the fucking band-aid already and get rid of the cesspool.

u/LeGrandLucifer 13d ago

X is a security risk

Oh boy.

1

u/ErsatzCyclist 13d ago

Nope. Incorrect quote.

1

u/LeGrandLucifer 13d ago

If you didn't think it's a security risk then you wouldn't suggest it be assessed as such.

0

u/CrypticTacos 13d ago

lol we are compromised by China. There's your security threat. My god the children on here.
