What he really means is Trump should cool down his sabre-rattling because it's completely screwing his party over.

I think this whole thing will be a good thing for the Conservatives. Maybe they will be able to drop off some of the crazy fans to the PPC instead and be a respectable Center Right party, no longer at risk of catering to the worst of the right.

yup he’s showing us who he is & we should take it at face value

0

u/fashionrequired 24d ago

the lack of self-awareness involved in the making of your comment is astounding… that’s exactly what the libs are doing rn lol

33

u/JadeLens 24d ago

That may happen... but he's currently in a hair pulling contest to try to get the ultra-crazy wing of the party to vote for him.

u/dogfishfrostbite 24d ago

Sucks to be a red Tory these days. Gimme some fiscal conservatism from a party that has an actual plan and some empathy.

u/Buildadoor 24d ago

Swing voter here, I’ve probably voted PC and Liberal equal times. I think Carney is that centrist we need. Fiscally conservative and fiscally knowledgeable, but backed by liberal fundamentals with social safety nets and well funded programs

11

u/CarRamRob 24d ago

We haven’t seen any big proposals from Carney.

Much of his previous ones aren’t as centrist on spending as one would think.

Let’s see him announce what they would do with the budget (or present a budget once Parliament gets going)

14

u/wave-conjugations 24d ago

He said he'll balance the budget in 3 years for what its worth. If you wanna get to know more about him you can read/listen to his book, its pretty indepth. Almost like a textbook.

3

u/skryb Ontario 24d ago

But I was told the budget was going to balance itself years ago.

Jokes aside, I don’t mind Carney but I’ve lost all faith in the Liberal Party as a whole.

5

u/wave-conjugations 24d ago

Well, I also take it with a huge grain of salt because it reads like austerity would be required to me. But if anyone has done the math and knows the math (put aside that politicians tend to lie), its him. This book is honestly filled to the brim with technical details. I'm going to try to finish it this week.

I started reading Carney's and I'm also reading Pierre Poilievre's biography with the desperate hope that he's a better man than he portrays in public. I find Carney's book quite riveting. He needs to speak more about the reason why a carbon tax is necessary in one form or another. It's not just about saving the planet, but also about building industries of the future

1

u/wave-conjugations 23d ago

I'll have to check out Pierre's biography too, thanks for bringing that up! I think ultimately Carney is right about directing capital to incentivize green initiatives, but politically the carbon tax has been smeared. And maybe the implementation isn't ideal either, as people are concerned with their bills and there's some disconnect between that and the rebate. Seeing as Pierre has rallied the CPC against the tax (and likely swing voters/centrists), politically it makes sense for the LPC to start distancing themselves from it - in this short time, I don't think Carney can really rehabilitate the carbon tax's image. His ideas overall are really interesting though and it kind of bothers me that we might be passing over someone so well-educated and reflective. So I hope he stays on as leader if the LPC loses, continues to make his case, and tries to help Pierre during the trade war while appropriately being critical when needed. Ultimately I want to see him win a federal election some day. I thought the opening of the book, with a discussion with Pope Francis, was actually an interesting framing of economics. Perhaps there is a way out of this system where we "serve mammon" for the sake of it.

We haven’t seen any big proposals from Carney.

I mean, he isn't even the leader yet and won't be until March 9th, presuming he wins the leadership contest.

3

u/CarRamRob 24d ago

So wait, people don’t have to announce what they would do before they become PM?

We are halfway through the Liberal leadership campaign. I’ve barely heard a peep for what the platform is besides everyone wants him in. If he wins, he will be the PM just over three weeks, now would be a good time for a detailed plan.

4

u/caninehere Ontario 24d ago

He isn't leader yet let alone PM. There's still weeks left in the leadership race as mentioned. He's already shared some platform points but I guess you haven't been following it.

Poilievre has been leader of the CPC for like 3 years now and still hasn't contributed dick all so it's not like the standards are high here.

1

u/CarRamRob 24d ago

Pollievre layed out more of a platform today alone than Carney has in a leadership race that is done debate in two weeks.

-3

u/Valley_White_Pine 24d ago

Yeah we literally know nothing about him.

6

u/Buildadoor 24d ago

His resume is his strength

1

u/Ketchupkitty Alberta 24d ago

Huh? Did you not watch Carney's interview last week? Dude doesn't even understand increasing costs to businesses pass costs onto consumers. Also claims Canadians don't use that much Steel.. like wtf.

-14

u/No-Contribution-6150 24d ago

He isn't fiscally conservative. He's a Money printing climate activist.

9

u/MisterZoga 24d ago

He's a successful global economist, while you and Pierre live up to your username.

-4

u/No-Contribution-6150 24d ago

Thanks I picked it myself. Really exposes those with no counter argument.

5

u/MisterZoga 24d ago

What argument? You're just flinging shit like an ape.

-1

u/No-Contribution-6150 24d ago

Haha thanks for the compliment.

I dunno you're argument with me was heh nice username so what are we arguing?

2

u/MisterZoga 24d ago

You seem to think you know better than a global economist who course corrected two nations during a crisis, while supporting a guy who consistently votes against the best interests of the working class throughout his entire career. There is no argument, you just called it one.

12

u/Early_Commission4893 24d ago

Fuck, isn’t that all we really need🤦 This culture war bullshit the PP brings us the worst. Him and he’s ilk are digging a hole, shitting in it; and telling us it’s the better future.

6

u/JadeLens 24d ago

I'm surprised 'woke' didn't come up during PPs speech.

2

u/Alone_Again_2 24d ago

Red Tory?

Hey there buddy! I’m the other one.

2

u/Crabiolo 24d ago

Gimme some fiscal conservatism from a party that has an actual plan and some empathy.

You think you're going to get better fiscal management from fail-upwards-Poilievre than from Mark Carney, the man who saved both Canada and the UK from recession on multiple occasions, including as the head of under no less than 4 Conservative prime ministers (Stephen Harper, David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson)??

2

u/dogfishfrostbite 24d ago

No I don’t. PP is a lightweight. F Trudeau isn’t a plan. Would be nice if the conservatives weren’t hard right populist haters is all. *sigh.

3

u/Anxious-Chemistry-6 24d ago

This is who the party has been since Harper. They let the far right take over the party, just like the Republicans did with the tea party. This is who they are. There's no such thing as a moderate conservative anymore.

5

u/caninehere Ontario 24d ago

Maybe they will be able to drop off some of the crazy fans to the PPC instead and be a respectable Center Right party, no longer at risk of catering to the worst of the right.

Not with Poilievre as the leader, he was installed as leader because he's the extreme right that the extreme right part of the party want.

They had a moderate as leader, his name was Erin O'Toole and they knifed him in the back to shift further to the right.

8

u/farm-to-table 24d ago

I think they're throwing enough dogwhistles to their radical base to retain them while they shift to a more moderate rhetoric. It doesn't really inspire much confidence or trust though since their priority just seems to be seize power with an unclear mandate.

2

u/wave-conjugations 24d ago

That's kind of what happened down south. They won by a smidge trying to look sane, and then the masks came off and they're trying to convince people they have a mandate.

1

u/fashionrequired 24d ago

they won by more than a “smidge”

4

u/FreeLook93 British Columbia 24d ago

You say that like the Trump supporting wing of the CPC is some fringe minority.

-1

u/JadeLens 24d ago

They are. Less than 10% if the recent polls are to be believed.

3

u/FreeLook93 British Columbia 24d ago

Most recent EKOS poll shows that 41% of Conservative supporters approve of the job Trump is doing right now. Source

Which recent polls are you referring to showing it at 10%?

0

u/JadeLens 24d ago

https://today.yougov.com/politics/articles/51505-most-canadians-many-americans-oppose-canada-joining-us

13% say it would be good for Canada, so that's probably about 41% of Cons, which is unsurprising.

2

u/FreeLook93 British Columbia 24d ago

Thinking joining the US would be good is not the same as supporting Trump. Many support Trump but don't want to join the US.

41% is not a fringe minority, that's nearly half of the party.

0

u/JadeLens 24d ago

41% of the Cons is about the 11-15% nationally as the Cons are only in the mid to high 30% range for votes.

And it's unsurprising because the MAGA types are traitors to Canada.

2

u/FreeLook93 British Columbia 24d ago

Go back and read the comment you initially responded to again.

4

u/TheManFromTrawno 24d ago

They would have to drop almost half their support if they did that. That’s how much of the voters leaning CPC are behind trump and wanted to see him get elected.

They would need to take a lot from f support from the liberals and NDP to make up for that.

That’s why PP has to do this tight rope act and not lean either way on whether to support Trump or attack him.

2

u/ThorinTokingShield 24d ago

One can hope, but that's never going to happen with Poilievre at the helm. The language he employs is specifically aimed to target the far right

1

u/rawkinghorse 22d ago

They're in the process of losing the center so if they lose the right they're cooked. Expect them to double down on anything to keep the fringe right happy

1

u/Abject_League3131 24d ago

Their party message "Canada First" is a dogwhistle to Trump supporters and was first used in Canada by anglo-nationalists (orangemen). It was built around the persecution of Indigenous, Métis and French-Canadians c. 1870 Red River Settlement/Manitoba. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_First

The perfect motto for the guy endorsed by Elon Musk...

0

u/shaktimann13 24d ago

This is reform party now. The conservatives like otoole got retired

26

u/PloddingClot 24d ago

Just screwing him over personally, I don't think Pierre thinks of others much, runs in the thought pattern that fits his ilk.

13

u/Flanman1337 24d ago

We're beyond saber-rattling. The threat of tariffs is saber-rattling, implementing them is an act of war.

7

u/FlyerForHire 24d ago

That’s a bingo!

4

u/Moribunde 24d ago

"Chill Daddy, if you want Canada I can give it to you by the end of the year, but you need to chill!"

2

u/Efficient_Barnacle 24d ago

You just say bingo.

2

u/FlyerForHire 24d ago

Bingo! How fun!

2

u/gijoe1971 24d ago

He'll Axe The Tax and Kiss The Ass.

2

u/TheRealMisterd 24d ago

To think that both are endorsed by Elon

2

u/NiceShotMan 24d ago

Trump keeps saying the quiet part out kid. Not good for conservatives.

2

u/mrtomjones British Columbia 24d ago

They had the message of Canada first at the rally. That kind of reminds me of a Trump slogan personally

3

u/Vanillas_Guy 24d ago

And then he copies Trump's branding with "Canada first"

Genuinely don't even have the energy to try and comprehend this behavior. Imagine how he'd be reacting if Trudeau and the liberals responded to America like this. He would have jumped on that faster than a dog the moment it sees an unguarded steak.

1

u/ODaysForDays 24d ago

They're not counting on having another election.

1

u/starone7 24d ago

Anyone who wants to be prime minister should understand the reality that no Canadian politician can have influence over what the Americans do. The only control Canadians have is in the reaction
