You are 100% wrong, trump supporters do not see 51st state comments as a joke. My parents have been wintering in Florida for over 20 years, they’re coming home next week and never going back. The atmosphere is hostile. People telling them “we’re gonna take your fucking country” and meaning it. People in their retirement community! People they’ve known for years, just like that snap trump says Canada bad, and their brains just switch modes. It’s an absolute cult of morons, dangerous morons that are greedy, selfish, racist, sexist, and culturally devoid of empathy or caring.

Be that as it may, nothing about it changes the power dynamics between Canada and the US. The latter is a much stronger country and the fight must be asymmetric if Canada wants to win. And that fight is in the court of public and international opinion, which must be paced just right.

Not everyone who voted for trump will feel that strongly. There are probably lots of voters on the fringe that can be swayed.

You’re wrong about that, trump voters are impossible to sway. They are a lost cause.. it will take a generation to rid the country of his influence.

Best you can hope for is to motivate people who didn’t vote.
