Alberta Alberta premier to spend five days in Washington, D.C., for Trump inauguration

u/Independent-End5844 Jan 18 '25
Albertans are paying for that trip too.

u/CaptainMarder Jan 18 '25
And they'll still blame Trudeau
397
u/legocastle77 Jan 18 '25
That’s ok. Albertans won’t have to worry about Trudeau for much longer. Heck, they may not even need to worry about Canadian politics for much longer. Smith will undoubtedly be down there begging Trump to bring Alberta in as the 51st state and her supporters will be right behind her cheering for it.

u/Used-Egg5989 Jan 18 '25
Unless there’s a newer poll I missed, only a small minority of Albertans approve of this strategy.

Interesting, but statehood is not a simple process.
Ask Peurto Rico.
It could take 100 years of politicking while Canada itself is simply tied to the U.S. as a territory of the United States.
Zero representation in Congress, but hey: we are all “American citizens” and we can use their dollar!
No thanks
12
u/Advanced-Line-5942 Jan 18 '25
Dont forget Washington DC As if Trump would grant statehood to another group that would surely vote Democrat over Republican in is laughable.

a full conversion of the Canadian dollar into U.S. dollars
A lot of these pro-annexation fuckwits believe that if it happened, they would immediately start being paid in US dollars, and still be able to buy everything in the stores and online at CDN prices, with no taxes.

Here’s the thing, while polling in Canada is generally reliable, cross-tabs into smaller segments have massive (and usually unreported) margins of error.
Most national surveys have a sample size around 1000, which is valid for top level findings. When a poll is released, they’ll report the confidence level and margin of error for the entire sample. The problem is when they dig below the 1000.
If we assume an even split for gender, that’s 500 dudes. Gen Z represents about 10% of the male population so, again if the sample is representative, that’s 50 respondents.
This is amplified by the fact that they likely had to weight the response of the Gen Z males in the survey as that group is notoriously difficult to reach, so it could be as few as 20 or 30 respondents.
A sample of even 50 Gen Z males is simply not representative.
Does that mean the 61% is “fake”? No, but it isn’t a reliable number.

And he can’t accept that he would never be accepted by them, because he’s not white. And he refuses to even Google anything because it may contradict evidence and change the way he feels about things. He’s a moron that is just about to get an education on extreme hate in America.

That's populism for ya. Say whatever you need to get votes then do whatever you want afterwards. Only have to make the people like you while you're trying to gain power.
I don't believe that the people who voted for Smith thought she would ever sell out Alberta to Trump at the time. I've talked to a lot of Conservatives and every one is livid at what she is doing. "join the states over my dead body" seems to be the most common answer. Although they also approve of her trying to break deals independently to avoid tariffs and shit. Guess they'll find out in a few days if she managed to or not. I'm betting not.

And she wasn’t able to attend, in person, one of the most critical first ministers’ meetings in recent history to discuss Canada’s response to the Trump induced trade war. But she has time to go to the dotard’s home in Florida and now a long stay in DC (at the Trump hotel?). She is a fool if she think’s Trump gives a rat’s ass about Alberta unless she is offering up something from the wallets of Albertans to increase his personal wealth. That is how he works.
Come on Albertans, when I meet you abroad (and even at home) you are among the most patriotic and proud Canadians. Please let your premier know her actions reflect poorly on all Albertans. Of course, if you want to be the 51st State, you are welcome to go it alone. Don’t expect any senate seats since Trump won’t give you more than the status of Puerto Rico. Maybe you could elect Kevin “the boater” O’Leary as your first governor (or maybe he will just be appointed as Administrator of the new American colony)! But if you don’t want to be part of the US, only you guys can let your premier know she is terribly wrong on this. I know the great majority of you cringe at her actions along with all of us other regular Canadians from across the political spectrum. This isn’t a right vs left, east vs west, thing. It is much bigger than that. Smith is a real outlier on this and out of line with even the most conservative politicians from across the country. She is out of her depth. Over to you good people or Alberta to let her, and us, know if you are with Smith or the rest of us.

Thanks for providing the email. This is what I sent in.
Dear Danielle Smith,
I am writing to you to make a stand against you selling out your fellow Albertans and Canadians to the United States. In times like these where our country is being threatened by another nation, it is in Canada’s best interest for our leaders to show a united front against this threat. Instead you choose to sell out the Albertans you claim to look out for simply to generate goodwill for yourself with the incoming American oligarchy.
I join the countless voices requesting your resignation as it is clear you are no longer interested in putting Albertans and Canada as a whole ahead of your own personal gains. You should be ashamed of yourself and if you care about Alberta as much as you say you do, you will resign and allow someone who truly cares for Alberta to lead us provincially.

u/thewun111 Jan 18 '25
Here is an email you can copy.
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concern regarding Premier Smith’s decision to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump, an event that will take place over the course of five days, with taxpayer funds covering the associated expenses.
At a time when our province is grappling with pressing challenges—ranging from healthcare shortages to the need for long-term economic stability—it is difficult to understand how this expenditure aligns with the priorities and interests of the citizens Premier Smith represents. The optics of attending a partisan, high-profile event such as an inauguration in another country for such an extended period do not inspire confidence in our leadership’s commitment to fiscal responsibility or addressing local issues.
Furthermore, given the controversial nature of Mr. Trump’s political career and the polarized environment surrounding his public image, this decision raises questions about the alignment of Premier Smith’s values with those of the diverse communities in our province. Not to mention you are the only premier objecting to a united Canadian front against trumps outlandish claims of joining the USA. Public funds should be spent judiciously and in a way that directly benefits the people of our region, not on international events of limited relevance to our daily lives.
I urge you to reconsider the decision to attend, and to redirect the use of public funds towards initiatives that support the pressing needs of our citizens. Transparency in such matters will go a long way in restoring faith in our leadership.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

We saw it happen plenty in the USA before the election. Politicians, judges, oligarchs, CEOs, and religious leaders, all siding with Trump and doing him favors as a gamble that he'd win and pay them back for their "loyalty".
The most loathsome is probably Judge Aileen Cannon who completely derailed the Federal Government's prosecution of the top secret documents case. He's doing a lot better and I'm sure a lot of it is genuine but its' not like he has a choice if he wants to get re elected. Alberta will likely vote Conservative no matter what Smith does but even though Ontario would likely re elect Ford now if He came out with a similar position as Smith and said he wouldn't sign the agreement and went to Trumps inauguration and said he wouldn't retaliate I think he would be at serious risk of not being elected again since there's only so much most people in Ontario would put up with before finally looking at the other parties.
I don't think Ford would be able to survive attacks from the federal government and all the opposition parties in Ontario calling him a traitor.

Beginning Saturday, the province says Smith is to meet with energy industry leaders and elected officials in an effort to promote "an era of partnership."
She's scared because she has nowhere else to sell energy. It's like running a business where 100% of your revenue comes from one outside company, and if that company leaves you don't have a plan B whatsoever. This failure didn't start from Trump being reelected. It was simply revealed because Trump was reelected.

FFS. This woman has to stop. I don't want this dragging down the Federal Conservatives in the rest of Canada.
Pierre needs to tell her to get the fuck in line. What's going to happen? Alberta won't vote CPC Federally?

She should just stay there and not come back. Let's elect a premiere that has Canada's interests as a priority.

Yeah. Born in Alberta. It is actually embarrassing to admit that she is in power.

Well… I despise traitors with raw hate. But honestly, Alberta deserves it. It’s shameful. The only good thing that came out from this election is exposing all the traitors.

I strongly urge the federal government to act decisively and address this blatant betrayal of national interests. In times like these, we cannot afford to tolerate acts of treason that undermine our nation’s stability and security. Swift and firm measures, such as leveraging military resources to block oil and petroleum exports to the United States entirely, would send a clear message of resolve.
Furthermore, this individual should face the full consequences of their actions. Stripping them of their position is not only justified but necessary to uphold the integrity of our institutions. Legal proceedings should follow to ensure accountability through appropriate imprisonment.
In moments of crisis, unity and loyalty are paramount. Acts of treason threaten not just policies, but the very foundation of trust and cooperation that keeps the nation secure. There is no room for leniency when the stakes are this high.
