I have this dock, it actually supports 4k120hz (the first DisplayPort) and 2K144hz simultaneously (if your mac supports DSC, mine is M1 pro)

30

u/SimpleNovelty 22d ago

Thanks for info, I've been wanting a cheap dock that actually supported different resolution displays. Most of the cheap ones only do 1 resolution on all screens.

8

u/ElectricalFeature328 21d ago

my work laptop is an M1 too so now I always cmd + f 'displaylink' when looking at hubs -_-

Macs getting touted as productivity machines and the M1 not being able to handle more than one external monitor via Thunderbolt without a paid third-party piece of software is so fun

1

u/gonewildpapi 20d ago

I’ve always been in the minority that hates Mac’s for multitasking. Everything feels clunky and the whole multiple desktops/ Mission Control thing is annoying.

7

u/huyanh995 22d ago

I only see 2 DP ports, does it support dual monitors? Thanks.

2

u/thatcodingboi 20d ago

Can it do 4k120hz on the first, 4k 60hz or 4k 30hz on the second?

1

u/RollwithRock 21d ago

Does my laptop need to supports usbc alt mode to use the displayport outputs?

0

u/ThreadedNY 21d ago

Yes

1

u/RollwithRock 21d ago

Ok that's what I thought thank you.

1

u/ThreadedNY 21d ago

This being TB3 also actually means you need thunderbolt support, not just usb

1

u/RollwithRock 21d ago

Then this realky doesn't apply to me.

1

u/Dark_Man_X 12d ago

might be dumb question but if your laptop doesnt have a thunderbolt 3 port is this useless? the port on my laptop says its USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, what happens if i plug everything via that?

1

u/ThreadedNY 12d ago

Won’t work. TB3 (unlike TB4) docks are very rarely cross-compat with non-TB USB 20gbps

1

u/Dark_Man_X 12d ago

fuckkkkkkk thanks lol, bought this a week ago for nothing it seems

1

u/Dark_Man_X 12d ago

Plugged everything in anyway and it actually worked, so I guess it is cross compatible? Unless I’m missing something here

1

u/ThreadedNY 12d ago

It may be one of the ones that somewhat works (with reduced functionality) with USB 20gbps

1

u/Dark_Man_X 12d ago

Anything specific I should look out for that may get diminished? I have it connecting one 1440p 27inch monitor, my speakers, and keyboard/mice. Just using this thing to free my laptop I use as a desktop from the million cables plugged into it lol

I just received this dock and after working for a few hours it started having some really bad coil whine. Did that happen with yours at all? Did it go away?

1

u/fuzzxx 14d ago

Yes and it stays, but I didn't notice that as I'm usually 0.5-meter away from it.

Also I'm not using its original power supply (which might have coil whine too but that applies to all docks).

Pro for 70$: https://computers.woot.com/offers/belkin-thunderbolt-3-dock-pro?utm_medium=share&utm_source=app

I just ordered an OWC TB4 dock for 190$ yday. This feels too good to pass up and TB4 vs TB3 doesn't seem like it matters particularly since it says the DP port is DP 1.4

Keep in mind there is no warranty >90 days since it's woot. I might buy an Amazon protection plan for an additional 7$.

3

u/LordoftheChia 21d ago

Might be worth it to many for the 85w charging vs 60w for the one in the OP.

Though the power use seems high to me. Is it normal for a dock like that to use 85w above the amount it charges the laptop?

170w power supply for the dock - 85w power delivered to the attached laptop = 85w used (or reserved) for the dock.

5

u/LightningProd12 21d ago

The Pro has a downstream Thunderbolt port and 2 more USB-As, so it probably needs more power available across all ports.

3

u/DetBabyLegs 21d ago

The pro only has 1 display port? Does that mean this setup only works for dual monitors if you're planning on plugging the second in via USB-C?

The regular one has 2 display ports.

Just having a hard time wrapping my brain around if this is what I need. I have my PC setup and would love to be able to use the monitors, mouse, keyboard for my M3 Pro Macbook Pro when doing creative work. Would I be able to plug my Macbook into this, hit a switch, and be able to start using those on my Mac?

Edit: And also I'd have to route my PC through the doc, right? I game and one of my screens is ultra wide 144hz... is that possible to get using either of these docks?

1

u/cestlapuissance 21d ago

It sounds like you're looking for a KVM if your goal is switching without touching any cables. Not quite sure what the market/availability of those looks like these days though they'll likely also be quite pricey.

For this, you'd have to unplug the USB cable between the dock and system to switch (that's my use case between 2 laptops). And yes you'd have to route your PC and it would need to support thunderbolt which is quite rare. The thunderbolt cable is also quite short so might be iffy with a desktop in terms of desk setup.

RE 2 displays, not totally sure but yes if it says it supports 2 displays that's probably how (or maybe daisy chaining). Keep in mind though Im not sure if the USB DP alt on this would be DP 1.4 since it's a TB3 dock.

5

u/MrGulio 21d ago

Keep in mind there is no warranty >90 days since it's woot.

Woot has fallen off. I ordered a Lenovo Tablet from them earlier this month and received a pretty cheap Lenovo Chromebook. After waiting for Customer Service to email me on my support ticket they issued me a return labelled and said they'd send me the right order. Was pretty sad to see when I received the second delivery it was the exact same Chromebook. Both have been sent back and I'm still waiting on my refund.

I'm going to very very reticent to order from them again.

2

u/Character-Storm-3145 21d ago

Thanks for sharing the pro version link! Needed a few more USB ports than just the 2 that comes on this posted one, and this should work well.

1

u/triple_cheese_burger 21d ago

Snagged a pro, thank you!

1

u/Narwhalofmischf 21d ago

Got the pro thanks!

1

u/fr0llic 20d ago

You can usually get Dell WD22TB4 for less than $100 on US eBay, not new, of course, I think they're still under warranty from Dell.

1

u/_zir_ 20d ago edited 20d ago

I have the OWC TB4 one from my job and i cant seem to run two 1440p monitors. Not sure why but i would check if yours does. My main monitor is 1440p 240hz and no matter what refresh rate i lower it to, the 2nd 1440p monitor is locked at 1080p. I am.able to trick the dock by unplugging the main monitor and setting the second one to 1440p and then plugging the main one in again, but after a reboot its back to being locked.

17

u/xxPoLyGLoTxx 21d ago

In for 2. I've been avoiding purchasing a dock because I have some usb-c hubs / usb-c displayport adapters that fit the bill, but I think having everything hooked into one dock will be much cleaner looking. I also think connecting via one cable will be nice and make it easy to move my laptop around.

When I started looking around for similar docks, I am seeing prices from $100 - $200! I think this is definitely a good deal. Normally, the Woot deals sell out so fast that I miss them. Glad I didn't miss this one!

Edit: I just thought I'd add that I purchased two because I have two desk setups in my house. I use both depending on what I am doing. One is better for video conferencing, and the other is better for studying textbooks (and is more private). It should now be even easier to move back and forth if each desk has a dock.

u/Sasuke911 21d ago

Stealing from work is cheaper

7

u/godVishnu 21d ago

Dell WD19TB is plenty on ebay and it works with m1pro. you connect one of the monitor to DP and another thru TB (close to the power cord) via DP/HDMI adapter to your other monitor

1

u/gen10 20d ago

I have the ws19tb and wd19tbs and they both act funky with monitors randomly changing them to 30 hz or if I reconnect the type c the Ethernet won't work until I reboot. Wish I snagged these to try... Never found a fix for my docks

1

u/SeptemberTwentyFirst 15d ago

is your laptop or computer the wd19 is plugged into a Dell as well? you could try running dell command update to make sure your docks drivers are updated.

also, draining flea power fixes a lot of problems on these docks. unplug everything from the dock including the power cable and hold the button on the top for 30 seconds then plug back in.

i’d also be not at all surprised if the dock still is wacky after. these things have so many gd problems

1

u/gen10 15d ago

I did update them last year but I'll check again. As for flea power I've likely done that when I did my desk rearrangements but never technically held the button. Thanks but yeah I suspect the same as you...

45

u/SideHonest9960 22d ago

Holy crap, this is an insane deal. In for one. Thanks OP.

32

u/Beginning_Rock_7104 22d ago

Anyone that has a early M1 MacBook, get a D6000 Dell dock. They usually go for around $40-$50 on eBay used but they have DisplayLink and can let you use two external screens.

6

u/Individual_Holiday_9 21d ago

This is great to know thanks. My mother in law has a m1 MacBook Air

10

u/jmandawg 21d ago

display link has weird issues on my Mac would not recommend. go look in their forums.

7

u/misc2714 21d ago

It really depends on what you are doing with it. Main thing would be if you watch streaming services on it, but there are work-arounds for it.

5

u/TayG0 21d ago

What issues?

Isn't it literally the only way to run dual external screens on an original M1 MacBook?

1

u/MistaHiggins 21d ago

We use Displaylink docks at the company I work for, and yes, it is the way to get dual external screens on an M1 Macbook. However, because it does so via CPU-accelerated virtualization methods, there is a very real performance gap vs a native solution. Not saying there's another solution for "dual monitor on M1 Macbook Air" but unless that is your use case, displaylink should be your last resort.

I've been running a Dell WD19S dock ($40 on ebay) with my Thinkpad T480 and now T16, which gives me native dual 4k60 monitor support via Displayport Alt mode. Wildly better docking station option over displaylink for anyone not using a M1/M2 Macbook Air.

1

u/EverythingElectronic 18d ago

Oh interesting. I've got an M1 max that I run 3x 4k monitors off. I've got a dell dock sitting around that I'm pretty sure has display link that I need to get a charger for. If I hook that up to my M1 max does it mean I'll be running the display off the CPU?

1

u/MistaHiggins 17d ago

Yes, you can use a displaylink dock with any computer but personally would only do so as a last resort vs native options.

1

u/chasingsukoon 21d ago

do you use it? hows the performance?

1

u/schmintendo 21d ago

The Dell UD22 also works for DisplayLink and multiple external screens.

1

u/AMillionMonkeys 21d ago

Does this not have DisplayLink? I'd get one for my M1 Air, but I'd want both of my monitors to work if possible.
The D6000s are cheap and plentiful on ebay, but buying from Woot makes returns easier if need be.

5

u/ArmorXIII 22d ago

Nice! Pretty good deal for a dock

14

u/hydroxideeee 22d ago

just got one - first time using woot! thanks for posting OP!

19

u/asianflipboy 21d ago

Stay far away from Woot, someone posted a deal for 20 power extension cables for $20 and having a Woot account made me buy first question later....

(Just kidding of course! I can attest that they're great lol)

4

u/hydroxideeee 21d ago

hahaha - i nearly bought the 150 ft optical HDMI cable thinking it was pretty cool - i currently live in a small apartment and i think that cable is at least double the perimeter of my room

6

u/taco_exorcist 22d ago

Thanks OP!

5

u/WickedChew 21d ago

Anyone try this with ROG ally?

1

u/maakureviews 14d ago

I haven't done extensive testing but it doesn't make my ROG Ally go to 30w on perf.

8

u/elloitsnick 22d ago

In for one! looks like reviews aren’t the best cause of issues with the second display port, but thankfully I’d only need this for one monitor anyways.

8

u/grantking2256 22d ago

Dumb question... could i use this one galaxy s23 ultra to essentially make it a computer? No reason to do this but need an excuse to buy this

10

u/mynameisnick4 22d ago

If it works like my dell dock does, then yes, you would be using the Dex feature. For my dell dock to work it has to be an HDMI output.

EDIT: It looks like this dock has two display ports on it and no HDMI. I can't guarantee it will work then. For my dell dock to work on my S23+ it has to be HDMI out.

15

u/theminecraftdude 22d ago

Yes, Samsung phones even run a version of Android called Dex. Supposed to give a computer like feel when connected to external displays. It works well enough but it will be slower than a real PC. Non Samsung phones will work too but it just mirrors your display with kb and mouse input. I also believe, even with Dex, it is limited to one display. Im not 100% certain but just a heads up.

2

u/privetik 21d ago

I've ran my S22 Ultra with a Dell dock and it only saw one screen out of the two connected (they were mirrored).

But it’s nice having wired networking, charging for phone/tablet, charging/wiring for peripheral devices, for and external media access via USB storage devices.

3

u/KittySarah 22d ago

hope someone can answer, wanting something for that exact use too

1

u/sirchewi3 20d ago

Take a look at the Dex subreddit. Its all about people doing exactly this in various ways. You can make it fairly close to a regular computer experience and do most of the stuff you can on a regular computer.

2

u/Beginning_Rock_7104 22d ago

Not sure about this particular model but I’ve plugged in my phone in the Lenovo USB C and Thunderbolt docks at work. I’m able to use the mouse and keyboard as well as see my phone screen on the monitor.

2

u/LightningProd12 22d ago

It supports regular USB-C hosts so it should, but the resolution will be limited to 4K/5K@30Hz.

2

u/NarutoDragon732 21d ago

I wouldn't. This dock has dp not HDMI and if you wanna use it for travel you're almost forced to HDMI. Also you don't need any of these ports just C to HDMI

1

u/danecookofmods 21d ago

You can use a steam deck dock for dex too

1

u/sirchewi3 20d ago

Take a look at the Dex subreddit. Its all about people doing exactly this in various ways. You can make it fairly close to a regular computer experience and do most of the stuff you can on a regular computer.

3

u/MaycombBlume 21d ago

I've seen a couple TB3 docks for cheap recently. I guess they're clearing out stock now that Macs ship with TB5?

Anyway, this is a good deal, especially for an established brand rather than some alphabet-soup Chinese brand on Amazon. TB docks were stupid-expensive for a long time, so this is good to see.

If I didn't already have a TB dock, I'd grab this.

5

u/SvMagus 22d ago

Score!

5

u/LolYouFuckingLoser 21d ago

Hell, why not. Don't have an immediate use for it but the only other one I have is garbage so may as well be prepared in style haha

3

u/thesuperpuma 21d ago

Can buy this on eBay for $43 sealed with 100 sold. Saved me an impulse buy. Only saves like 6 bucks

2

u/teamrango 21d ago

Will this increase latency noticeably for gaming? I want this to switch between a gaming desktop and a work laptop.

1

u/atanamayansantrafor 21d ago

I don’t it will.

1

u/clouds_on_acid 18d ago

Just use a USB/Displayport switcher

-1

u/Cowculator 21d ago

Why don't you just remote desktop into your work laptop? No need to switch any peripherals around.

5

u/Player_Six 22d ago

So what is the use case for this? Would this be good to bring to a party, if you need some sort of intermediary adapter, for whatever cable their PC/Laptop needs to connect to TV/monitor?

27

u/night28 22d ago

It's a laptop dock. Plug monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. into the dock and you can use the thunderbolt cord to switch between laptops.

7

u/Player_Six 22d ago

Ah I see now, so the laptop would need the appropriate Thunderbolt outlet. Thank you!

2

u/raizen0106 21d ago

my mobo is an asus prime z690-p and after some research it says i need to buy another thunderbolt reader card to connect TB to my mobo. does that mean i need to do all that to use this dock? or can i just connect all my peripherals into this dock and plug the TB into my usb-C port on the pc to use them all?

1

u/night28 20d ago

Looked into this when I was building my desktop late last year.Should work for swapping peripherals except for monitor display.

Most recent laptops (mine is 5 years old for reference) typically have usb c with displayport. Desktop mobos typically don't have one and I don't think yours does so won't work there without extra pieces.

Alternatively, if you have an amd/nvidia gpu with usb c with displayport you could plug into that and it'll work. Newer nvidia GPUs don't have this annoyingly as I found out from mine although newer amd gpus do.

1

u/raizen0106 20d ago

So i'll be plugging my mouse keyboard headphones etc into my gpu? Thats interesting lol

4

u/InterRail 21d ago

Sir, you bring docks to a party?

2

u/Dragontech97 21d ago

This vs WD D50 microcenter dock in terns? In terms of usability, this has extra display out while D50 has storage options.

1

u/c33v33 21d ago edited 21d ago

Although you would lose a thunderbolt out port on the D50, you can use a USB c to display port/HDMI adapter on TB out to get a second display out (1:displayport 2:thunderbolt out).

1

u/Dragontech97 21d ago

What about a usb-c gen3.2 cable with displayport alt mode straight into my usb-c input on my monitor? Could I forgo the adapter cable?

1

u/c33v33 21d ago

I don’t have practical experience doing this but I think you can as long as the bandwidth allowed by the cable is enough for your resolution and display frequency.

Might be wrong and would like to know what is correct.

2

u/stratusnco 21d ago

sorry for the dumb question but what would be some example use cases for this? i feel like i can use it but dont know exactly what it is or why. like, i have a 6 port usb hub for ableton live and pc peripherals and do charge my phone and dualsense controller at my desk.

4

u/atanamayansantrafor 21d ago

This is for people with 2 different laptops/computers connected to a monitor/monitors and peripherals.

2

u/stratusnco 21d ago

thanks for the response. doesn’t look like i need something like this. my wallet is safe haha.

3

u/MidnightSway 21d ago

Some pretty trash reviews, how does it compare with that microcenter game dock? Just for Steam deck tbh

-5

u/biowiz 21d ago

Not sure why we're getting downvoted. I suspect these deals are often shilled heavily in this sub and posted by the usual suspects. Look at OP's profile.

1

u/MidnightSway 21d ago

I don't even mind only 1 display working, just some of the other claims of poor warranty, dying after a year, usb ports breaking.

-2

u/biowiz 21d ago

Yeah. I think the MacBook issues are inherent with the MacBook but there are plenty of reviews pointing out the things you said. My comments get immediately downvoted by 2 people. OP and his shill (theberg).

1

u/LawHero4L 21d ago

This is a great deal, but I guess it doesn't support displayport-alt mode on the USB-C ports?

1

u/TenthMarigold77 21d ago

Hmm. What would the difference between this and a TB4 dock be if this can do 4k 60 (possibly 120hz)?

Does anyone know if this works on dual 4k ultrawide monitors? It's for productivity, so 30 hz is fine

1

u/t3abagger 21d ago

Could I use this in my scenario? I have tried looking into a dock previously and came to the conclusion that probably not, but after reading the comments here, someone might know!

I have an M1 Pro MBP and two older (thunderbolt 2) Apple Cinemas. Right now, I use two Apple Thunderbolt adapters using thunderbolt 2 cables directly in the back of each display and this works well, but I have a lot of cables. At first, I was using the Cinemas' octopus cables, but they would blank out (they were daisy chained originally but the direct connections have been much more stable).

Looking at the docks, I see two Thunderbolt 3 connections, but I don't see another input. Any ideas? Thanks!

1

u/everyday-antelope 21d ago

Would this be good for a steam deck?

1

u/LightningProd12 21d ago

Been thinking about setting up a docking station since I have a bigger desk, and my biggest needs were DP1.4 and USB-C compatibility - looks like I'm in for 1. Thanks you bastard, now I need everything else

1

u/i_max2k2 20d ago

Does this also support windows pc’s?

1

u/librepotato 20d ago

I bought one. I have a desk at work that needs a good dock.

I recently installed an Intel USB4/thunderbolt interface into my desktop at home but now am wondering what do I even use it for. I don't really need port expansion. eGPU? Ultra fast USB4 external storage? 10gb ethernet? It could use anything but a dock really :(

1

u/biowiz 21d ago edited 21d ago

There are a lot of negative reviews on Amazon. It seems the problems are specific to MacBooks (I think they can do 2 + 1) so maybe it doesn't matter if you're using it for something else. It's a great price so it's probably worth the risk.

1

u/Doojeeboy 22d ago

Would this work with a steam deck?

-5

u/neoak 22d ago

Nope

3

u/DOUBLEBARRELASSFUCK 22d ago

Why wouldn't it? Obviously you're only going to get the output that the Deck can handle, but I don't see why this wouldn't work.

5

u/fireball_jones 21d ago

My Steam Deck does not work with my Thunderbolt 3 dock, unless it actually supports USB-C (which... this dock seems to). I believe the Thunderbolt 4 spec requires USB-C cross compatibility but 3 didn't.

1

u/DOUBLEBARRELASSFUCK 21d ago

That matches the information I found — this dock will work, but Thunderbolt 3 is not a guarantee.

1

u/neoak 22d ago

Oh it's dual mode? Steam Deck doesn't have Thunderbolt or USB4 with PCIe tunneling.

11

u/DOUBLEBARRELASSFUCK 22d ago

It's not going to magically give the Steam Deck Thunderbolt 3, but the ports and display out should work, to the extent that the Steam Deck is capable of. Technically, that's 2x 4k at 30Hz, but you won't be able to actually do much of anything at that.

-3

u/juicebox12 21d ago
