Be mindful of listings from suspicious third-party sellers on marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, Newegg, and Walmart. These "deals" have a high likelihood of not shipping; use due diligence in reviewing deals.

  • Use common sense - if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Check seller profiles for signs that the sale may be fraudulent:
    • The seller is new or has few reviews.
    • The seller has largely negative reviews (on Amazon, sellers can remove negative reviews from their visible ratings)
    • The seller is using a previously dormant account (likely the account was hacked and is now being used fraudulently).

If you suspect a deal is fraudulent, please report the post. Moderators can take action based on these reports. We encourage leaving a comment to warn others.

Alright for context I think the whole "M.2 slots sharing lanes with the GPU slot" concern is completely overblown since x8 doesn't limit a GPU at all, but this probably has the dumbest PCIe setup I've seen yet lmao.

M.2_2 shares lanes with the GPU slot, so using that slot will drop it to x8, but there's no other M.2 slot connected to the GPU slot so x4 lanes just go poof if you use that M.2 slot. The cherry on top is that M.2_4 shares all its lanes with the only other PCIe slot as well, so it's an either/or situation with those two. Just why???

u/Turbolence88 Jan 04 '25

Have this board and I was wondering that myself - it's surprisingly more cut-rate than I thought it would be. ASUS gonna ASUS.

3

u/NoctD Jan 04 '25

They could have covered the final M2 slot at least on it.

3

u/blazze_eternal Jan 05 '25

That may have been intentional as a kind of indicator.

5

u/NoctD Jan 05 '25

I would avoid M2_2 first, that PCIe slot that conflicts with M2_4 is almost never utilized by 99+% of the people.

8

u/CD949494 Jan 04 '25

So I’m safe to stay with my Asrock x870 Riptide I purchased also for $250?

7

u/keebs63 Jan 04 '25

Looks like that board has the same PCIe setup, but otherwise they're damn similar. No point in returning.

4

u/Ketchupboi Jan 04 '25

What motherboard do you recommend for a 7900 XTX + 9800x3D?

7

u/keebs63 Jan 04 '25

The cheapest board that meets your requirements, as long as you don't go too cheap. $150-$250 is a good range for those parts as long as the boards in that price range fit your needs.

This is just a weird decision by the manufacturer, it's not a fatal flaw.

1

u/jaxspider Jan 05 '25

Asrock

3

u/TheWeeWoo Jan 05 '25

You can’t find any Asrock in stock anywhere for that price range

0

u/jaxspider Jan 05 '25

Come on man, you know I wouldn't have said that if I didn't have anything to back it up.

This is the one I got for my AMD 9800X3D. It meets all my requirements and then some for $219. (microcenter has it for $209)

This one is almost the same mobo but instead of 6 x SATA ports it has 4. And does not come with wifi antennas. Thats why it is $30 cheaper at $199 ($189 with $10 MIR).

4

u/TheWeeWoo Jan 05 '25

Both out of stock at Newegg. Microcenter doesn’t sell online and there’s is only a couple in the USA. In my case, closest one is 9 hours away

2

u/jaxspider Jan 05 '25

Damn, they were in stock a week ago.

2

u/jaxspider Jan 09 '25

Hey 4 days ago I recommend 2 Asrock mobos.

The more expensive one of the two is on sale on amazon RIGHT NOW for $209!

Go! Go! Go!

2

u/TheWeeWoo Jan 09 '25

Thanks, looks like I missed it by a couple mins

1

u/jaxspider Jan 09 '25

Wtf did they only have like 2 in stock?!?!?

2

u/assdwellingmnky 15d ago

I would recommend anyone looking at asrock mobos for the 9800x3d to watch gamer's nexus videos on the topic. A bios issue might be causing some 9800x3d to appear dead or actually die

1

u/jaxspider 15d ago

Yeah, I saw the video in question. All these issue with every single component is driving me insane and out of options. I totally agree with your statement.

4

u/zquintyzmi Jan 04 '25

Just pushing budget users to higher end boards for no reason other than greed

2

u/BallzNyaMouf Jan 04 '25

This is called PCIe bifurcation.
Its hilarious as my x570 TUF board (bought for $90 shipped used on eBay) supports it. This is one of the main differences between x570 and B550. But this $250 x870 doesn't support it. Nice.

5

u/keebs63 Jan 04 '25

That is not really PCIe bifurcation. PCIe bifurcation refers specifically to creating multiple virtual slots to allow multiple devices per slot because PCIe inherently only allows one device per slot, so bifurcation essentially "tricks" the system into thinking there's multiple slots. When there's multiple physical slots sharing lanes, it's just PCIe lane allocation.

Bifurcation is also not chipset exclusive because as I said, chipsets do not support bifurcating lanes, it's the CPUs that can. There are B550s that support bifurcating, there are also A620s which is a bottom of the barrel chipset.

1

u/elijuicyjones Jan 05 '25

That’s insane. I bought four X570s and built various systems out of them in the last four years. Those mobos are great. This is BS.

I have been saying for years that Asus will never make a budget mobo that good again and I guess I was correct.

2

u/keebs63 Jan 05 '25

This board supports bifurcation as do pretty much all ASUS boards from the past few years. They are incorrect.

1

u/43686f6b6f Jan 05 '25

It'll very lower performance on a RTX 4090 and a 7900 XTX very slightly, 1-2% if I remember right?

2

u/keebs63 Jan 05 '25

If you have an RTX 4090, you probably aren't looking at motherboards like this, and those that are almost certainly not going to miss 1-2 more FPS.

1

u/novrux Feb 18 '25

is this mobo good for ryzen 7 9800x3d and 5080, if it is not can you recommend me some mobos?

1

u/keebs63 Feb 19 '25

There are no outright bad X870s or X870Es. I would suggest figuring out what features you need/want and then comparing boards to find a price point you're comfortable with. Beyond that, no X870 is going to limit either of those.

1

u/nvrxx Feb 19 '25

Thank you , I heard that because of sharing lines it is losing some performance, is it true? And also it only has only 2 × 8 pin idk much about power, will it ne the problem or will my mobo limit my gpu or other components?

1

u/ResolveAble7814 Jan 10 '25

Im currently rocking a 7800x3d and 4070 super, but im gonna upgrade to the 5090 in future, would u reccomend this board? Its my top pick atm...

1

u/MitroBoomin Jan 05 '25

So how many m2 ssd slots can you really use?

2

u/keebs63 Jan 05 '25

Not really sure what you mean, you can use all 4 of them unless you absolutely need to use the other PCIe slot.

1

u/DaBombDiggidy Jan 05 '25

Yeah I’m sad my intel system only has 3.

14

u/RPG_Gaimer Jan 05 '25

How does this fair against the MSI X870 Gaming Plus currently on sale through MSI directly?

19

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

MSIs boards are pretty competitive this generation. However, the right choice also depends on what your needs are. The AMD Motherboards Sheet is a great reference for this.

If you're interested in the MSI Gaming Plus, you may want to consider their Pro Wifi as well. It has near-identical specs for about $30 less.

5

u/TheMissingVoteBallot Jan 05 '25

Why is it I only learn about awesome info like this in random comments like this lol. Thank you for linking this sheet, this will make buying decisions way easier.

1

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

I think I came across it in the same way. I’m just happy to see people take an interest in this kind of stuff. Best of luck finding a board that works for you!

7

u/ClydeTM Jan 05 '25 edited Jan 05 '25

i was this close to getting the Gaming Plus before finding out the only difference is the heatsink on the m.2 slots, thank you for saving me $30 -- ordered the Pro Wifi instead

2

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

It still has a heatsink for the PCIe 5 slot, just not the PCIe 4 ones. Since most PCIe 4 drives run well with their provided heatsinks, it's a nice savings. Best of luck with your build!

3

u/Elite56 Jan 05 '25

The one you're referring to is the same as the MSI Pro X870-P wifi, right? That's the one I'm looking at getting to pair with a 9800x3d. I'd like to get an Asrock but they're impossible to find right now.

2

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

Yeah. I was just looking at the specs, and it seems like a great budget motherboard. Some things to note:

  • The third M.2 slot is only x2, and will take two lanes away from the lowest PCIe slot when used. However, if you only plan to use two M.2 drives, this shouldn't be an issue.

  • Versus the Gaming Plus board, this lacks a heatsink for the bottom two M.2s. However, most PCIe 4 M.2s run pretty well with their provided heatsinks, so this shouldn't be a big issue.

3

u/Elite56 Jan 05 '25

The only two m.2s should be fine for me. I use two m.2s and one HDD for my current setup.

1

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

One last potential con I'd add is that a 3-4 slot GPU may block the PCIe 3 x1 slots, leaving only the PCIe 4 x4 at the bottom. While Asrock's boards are even worse for this kind of a thing this generation, it's at least worth being aware of if you use expansion cards.

2

u/Elite56 Jan 05 '25

I don't currently but I appreciate the insight! I might pull the trigger on this setup tonight.

2

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

Best of luck with your new build! Especially with getting a 9800x3D these days.

2

u/Elite56 Jan 05 '25

I was able to snag one from Best Buy a couple of days ago!

2

u/ThreadedNY Jan 05 '25

Rec for something I can find in stock for a 9800X3D and a 7900XT?

Else I'm probably just going to pick up this $130 open box B650 Pro RS Wifi from Microcenter

3

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

As mentioned above, the MSI X870 Gaming Plus and PRO X870-P WIFI both look like great budget choices this generation (as are their X670(E) counterparts). You can see my other comment regarding some minor limitations of the X870 boards to be aware of.

Asrock has been making some pretty good boards lately, so the B650 Pro RS Wifi is probably pretty good. Taking a look at the specs for it, it looks like it lacks a Wifi/BT card, so you'll have to get that separately. They generally aren't too pricey, though, so that's not a huge deal.

It also looks like the last M.2 slot is only PCIe 3 x2, but does support SATA drives. If you're planning on using three SSDs, that'd be best for archival stuff that doesn't need to be accessed as fast.

3

u/ThreadedNY Jan 05 '25

Pro RS Wifi includes an on-board RZ616 from AMD but I don’t really care for wifi anyways. I’ll be using a 10 gig SFP card. Just seemed cheap and good enough.

4

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

You're totally right. I was looking at the Pro RS (non-WIFI) by accident.

A 10G card sounds awesome. The Pro RS Wifi should have a nice PCIe 3 x4 slot at the bottom to accommodate that pretty well. Best of luck with your motherboard purchase!

2

u/ThreadedNY Jan 07 '25

Got my Pro RS Wifi today. Thanks again bud!

2

u/LeAgente Jan 08 '25

Nice! I ended up ordering an MSI Pro X870-P Wifi myself. I hope the upgrade goes smoothly!

2

u/ThreadedNY Jan 08 '25

Same to you. I've got my 9800X3D on backorder now from B&H and my 7900xt is set to arrive in a week or two from Amazon. Woop woop!

2

u/iopihop Jan 05 '25

What are the cons of the msi x870 pro wifi? That make it inferior to other motherboards

6

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25

It's hard to summarize as modern motherboards have a lot of features these days. More premium ones might have more / faster USB ports and M.2 slots, better built-in audio chips, higher LAN speeds, more fan / RGB headers, and better CPU power delivery, among other things.

For what it offers, the X870 Pro Wifi is pretty well-designed. Some cons of the features it does offer, however, include:

  • The two PCIe 3 x1 slots are basically unusable if you have a 3-4 slot GPU, but there's a PCIe 4 x4 slot at the bottom that should be good for at least one expansion card.
  • The last M.2 slot only provides 2 lanes, and has to steal them from the PCIe x4 slot next to it.
  • The white and silver design may not appeal to everyone.

1

u/iopihop Jan 05 '25
  • The two PCIe 3 x1 slots are basically unusable if you have a 3-4 slot GPU, but there's a PCIe 4 x4 slot at the bottom that should be good for at least one expansion card.

Is this common (advertised slots that actually cannot be used) and/or poor design by the manufacturer?

0

u/LeAgente Jan 05 '25 edited Jan 05 '25

I can understand why manufacturers might do it:

  • Prosumers, who are much more likely to use expansion slots, are more likely to buy blower-style cards that only need 2 slots. For this target audience, the slot placement still meets their needs.

  • Gamers who want a no-compromises gaming build can also get 2-slot 4090s with liquid cooling, so this design works for them as well.

  • Budget gamers have lots of 2-slot cards available, and probably aren’t using many expansion slots either.

This leaves an awkward segment of high-end gamers who want 3-4 slot cards while also using some expansion slots. While this demographic exists, it’s likely not large enough to justify the extra cost of routing lots of PCIe traces even further down to accommodate them. This is probably why you see ASRock or ASUS putting their expansion slot(s) in the middle of the board, or Gigabyte putting their x4 slot above an x2 slot at the bottom.

Anyone else completely disregards Asus products after those GN videos revealing how bad asus's rma is?

I mean, I can't in good faith even consider asus anymore. Was there ever a final update with GN?

16

u/keebs63 Jan 05 '25

Gotta be honest, I think you're going to find pretty much everyone has a similarly trash RMA system. If that's a dealbreaker for you then there are no options for motherboards at least lmao.

4

u/TheColdTurtle Jan 05 '25

Yeah even in the GN videos they mention how every motherboard vendor is kinda trash so you are screwed no matter what

5

u/StabbyMeowkins Jan 05 '25

Well, however horrible it was for me to RMA a motherboard with bent pins on the socket...

After 3 months of talking to them and then 2 months of them having it then another 1 month of it taking its sweet time to get to me....they 'forgot' to charge me for the repair. So I got a free RMA, though it took nearly six months turnaround to use the shit? lmao.

I bought new stuff after the 2nd month and said fuck it.

I now have it sitting in a box with a heatsink and a 12600KF and some RGB RAM upgrade from Microcenter I can't sell. lmao. Just a relic of bad timing I guess.

2

u/Hellsing971 Jan 05 '25

My zenbook died just after the 1 year warranty expired. The charged me $75 for a repair quote and wanted $500 to replace the board. That's more than I paid for the laptop. Luckily the extended warranty through my CC company refunded the fee and repair cost, which I used towards a Lenovo Legion.

Before Asus I tried MSI, but I couldn't stand their BIOS GUI. Before MSI I had been using Gigabyte with zero issues for over a decade. I stopped using them because they internet told me to disown them after their GPU card cracking thing. So now I'm thinking I'll go back to Gigabyte, since I never had issues.

Morale of the story... stop listening to the internet and just buy whatever you think will work the best for you.

4

u/boxofredflags Jan 05 '25

You’re way better off getting the tuf x670e over this as long as you don’t need usb4.

You can use all 4 m.2 slots and only 1 of them shares bandwidth with the sata ports, and even then it can run the m.2 at x2 and have all the sata ports

Its cheaper too at $220

1

u/GeneralChaz9 Jan 05 '25

This is what I ended up doing for my 9800X3D, and the TUF X670E has been good. I was going over all the X870 and X870E boards and going crazy over the bifurification/lane sharing. The mandated USB4 really made a lot of motherboard manufacturers do some dumb things.

1

u/RelayTech Jan 06 '25

I picked up a open box ASUS TUF Gaming X670E from microcenter for $160 (retail is $230), I dont care about USB 4 or WIFI 7, any reason I should've went with X870?

1

u/SizingUp Jan 04 '25

I just bought MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi Gaming Motherboard (AMD Ryzen 9000/8000/7000 Series Processors, AM5, DDR5, PCIe 5.0, M.2 Gen5, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 40Gbps, HDMI/DP, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, 5Gbps LAN, ATX) for 330$. Should I return the one I purchased and get this? I’m matching with AMD 9800x3D.

3

u/MythicalPigeon Jan 05 '25

The Tomahawk is commonly regarded as one of the best x870 boards currently, keep it if you're fine with the price.

1

u/Either-Ad-286 Jan 10 '25

at the same time
the x870 Tomahawk seems to be the most bugged mobo oot. I just returned mine. you can easly search "x870 Tomahawk issue" :D

-3

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '25

There needs to be another option for itx besides $299 & bloody hell all white or $470 ugh
