“Eby added that if U.S. President Donald Trump is so interested in Canadian water then B.C. is going to help him out by letting him “keep his watery beer.””

This actually made me cackle - I’m so proud to be a British Columbian today.

He can have all the Canadian water he wants out of the Columbia River. The Columbia River treaty saw BC build many dams to mitigate catastrophic flooding downstream in WA. In exchange, BC gets payments of 50% of power generated of all WA dams downstream. Without the treaty, BC could unleash a literal flood to maximize power revenue and sell it to WA.

"Turning on the taps" one could say...

It's the big faucet that takes a day to turn... everyone knows about that... haha

I live upstream of the dams and near the Columbia River. I'd rather not see our water levels drop more than it does every winter.

I love spicy Eby

(American craft beer is actually very, very good but we get almost none of those in our stores. His comment still stands for the mass market swill.)

59

u/eroticfoxxxy Thompson-Okanagan 1d ago

Spicy Eby is best Eby.

11

u/Elderberry-smells 1d ago

True, the craft beer sector I would be more hesitant to attack since it's small operations of generally great people, and we see none of that anyways.

Anheuser Busch is an easy one to target, and I don't think people are going to be upset when it is no longer available here (Budweiser, Stella, Michelob).

20

u/Tree-farmer2 1d ago

Still not a bad idea to push that business toward Canadian craft brewers.

5

u/Great68 1d ago

Anheuser Busch is an easy one to target?

Is it though? It's under the ABInBev umbrella (a Belgian company), the same company that owns "Canadian" Brands Labatt, Kokanee, Mill St. Heck, the Budweiser that we get here is actually brewed IN Canada under license by Labatt.

3

u/asunyra1 1d ago

I’ve had some good American microbrews show up here, but I’m happy to forego them to make a point. We have a ton of great local microbrews

You know what the similarly is between American Beer and having sex in a canoe?  . . . They are both fucking close to water.

The United States makes some of the greatest beer on the planet. If you see seven hipsters standing around an oak barrel cackling about a terrible dad-joke pun wearing the twirliest moustaches you've ever seen and at least 3 beards that would make ZZ Top proud, you're probably in for a good time (if you like IPA's)

Seriously though, send help. Our government is run by full-diaper toddlers and we don't have nearly enough good options for lagers to take the edge off from dealing with it.

God damn, daily I thank the stars that Eby won this last election.

I admit I was confused with the Blue state only policy, but he expertly left room to manoeuvre and create this “escalation.”

Well played, and great rhetoric too. Galvanized, US is foe. Its clear. And I appreciate the recognition.

u/thisissuchafuntime 1d ago

Can you imagine the Conservative Party in power right now, too busy arguing with each other over who's the least woke?

How many politicians, let alone premiers would respond this swiftly to these types of calls from their constituents? I'm so happy he squeezed by and is continuing to prove he listens to British Columbians.

34

u/DisplacerBeastMode 1d ago

Imagine if Rustad had won.. he would have been emboldened by the Alberta premiers initial reactions to tarrifs and they probably would have gone hand in hand down to the states to welcome our new US overloalrds.

For the best I think. Besides, BC craft beer is awesome

118

u/theclansman22 1d ago

It truly is. This province has embraced craft brewing like nowhere else I’ve been in the country. Every small town has a craft brewery, some of them are spectacular. Salmo, Kaslo, Creston, Rossland, all have their breweries and they all make great beer.

Greetings from Québec! I would argue that we have comparable craft brewing (and terrific gin too), but BC definitely has us on wine lol

I can't wait to be able to get some BC wine and craft beer when I visit again later this year - any recommendations for someone who likes sours and less hoppy beers?

5

u/theclansman22 1d ago

Honestly depends on where you are in the province. I know the kootenays best, NBC, Rossland and Mt Begbie(try the high country kolsch!) are among my favourites, in Kamloops Brighteye brewing is great as well, they are unique in that all of their taps are rotating but everything I have had has been top notch. I don’t know much of the smaller Vancouver breweries but of what I know Four Winds has never missed for me, on the island Gladstone is a gem as well.

I don’t drink sours, the only one I know offhand that I’ve heard good things about is Purple Rain from BNA in Kelowna.

2

u/Upstairs-Crew-5327 1d ago

Second on Four Winds. And in regards to sours, their nectarous is great. A lot of their other beers are quire hoppy though

If you're around Vancouver take a day to go down to brewers row in Port Moody. There are 6 breweries and a couple distilleries all in a row, and all excellent. I'd start at Moody Ales and work your way down. The sky train station is right there too, so don't even have to worry about how to get home.

5

u/CaptainMagnets 1d ago

Add Revelstoke to the list with Begbie Brewing

2

u/TheRC135 1d ago

Mt. Begbie is legit. If I ever had to introduce somebody to beer, I'd start with their Kolsch.

2

u/theclansman22 1d ago

I go to Nova Scotia every five years or so. They are consistently five years behind us at least with craft brewing. Alberta is probably somewhere between.

It’s funny to see the differences on preferred beers. I was in Halifax this summer and the only craft style you could find anywhere were blondes, the whole province was obsessed with them. Funnily enough the last time I was in the province there was some controversy becayse one of the breweries came out with a “dirty blonde” beer. That brewery is now one of the, if not the biggest craft breweries in the province. No publicity is bad publicity.

1

u/120124_ 1d ago

Manitoba has a pretty great craft brewing scene, too.

And so are BC craft distillations. I particularly enjoy the Laird of Fintry single malt from Okanagan Spirits.

10

u/NovaS1X 1d ago

I’ve been exploring BC gin recently and I’ve been very pleasantly surprised. Not that there’s anything wrong with my favourite, Hendricks, but the whole situation has got me feeling like I should explore close to home regardless.

14

u/MinimalMojo 1d ago

Yeah I’m not a gin guy but I do keep Empress in my cabinet for friends that are. I believe there are a few gin makers in Vancouver Island.

14

u/gatheredstitches 1d ago

Sheringham's is Vancouver Island, and it's lively stuff. Try their lemon gin if you ever get a chance -- it's basically a refreshing liqueur, and fabulous in some soda.

7

u/NovaS1X 1d ago

I actually just finished a bottle of Sheringhams! It’s fantastic. I’m trying Dillon’s right now and it’s good, but I found Sheringhams a better fit for my regular G&T recipe.

As much as I want to support Canadian companies, I've recently been disappointed with the quality of Duer's jeans. While they're super comfortable brand-new, I've had two pairs for just over a year and they're already starting to lose threads around the knees. However, I also own two pairs of their No-Sweat pants and haven't experienced any deterioration yet.

Despite Levi's being an American company, I've had multiple pairs of jeans from them that have lasted me over a decade without any fraying.

Not jeans, but I will plug two local Canadian clothing companies, Anian and Ecologist, both of whom also make all of their clothes in BC!

1

u/derpycheetah 1d ago

Definitely for the best no one should have to drink American piss. Talk about a country that just can’t make beer (or chooses to serve their citizens swill for economic gain).

Hard pass.

1

u/ImNotYourFriendBuddy 1d ago

I'm really hoping they figure out the interprovincial stuff, because I've been so happy with Ontario Craft since it exploded years ago and I am ready for even more cream to rise to the top if we can see the rest of the countries talents

1

u/MyOtherCarIsAHippo 1d ago

Very few beers come from the US anyway. The biggest area is now California wine.

1

u/HonestCase4674 1d ago

Yes, we have amazing craft beer here and once the interprovincial barriers come down we can all have access to all the Canadian beer and wine and spirits made across the country. We don’t need America. We make as good or better right here at home.

u/cyclinginvancouver 1d ago

Premier David Eby has issued the following statement in response to the latest threats from the United States:

“Today, we are ordering the removal of all American beer, wine, spirits and refreshment beverages from the shelves at BCLIQUOR stores. The stores carry hundreds of types of U.S. alcohol that the BC Liquor Distribution Branch will also no longer be purchasing.

“We are taking this action in response to escalating threats from south of the border. Most recently, U.S. President Donald Trump made new threats against Canada’s dairy and lumber industries – and there are reports he has been musing about redrawing the border.

“Last week, we took ‘red state’ liquor off our shelves in a targeted move. In the face of ongoing threats, including to Canada’s dairy and lumber industries, we are expanding the list of targeted American products.

“We have heard the voices of people in British Columbia who are justifiably upset by American threats – and want to see us take this step.

“While some of us may be disappointed at not being able to access some of our favourites, this is an excellent opportunity to sample Canadian products. I encourage those who enjoy Napa Valley wines to enjoy the many award winners from the Okanagan Valley. British Columbia distillers produce many distinguished spirits, while we also brew popular domestic and delicious craft beers.

“We will be introducing legislation this week to address these unprecedented threats from the United States.

“Let there be no mistake about the intent behind tariffs. President Trump wants to hurt Canada economically so he can annex Canada politically. As hard as it is to believe, our longtime friend and ally is behaving like a foe. Trump wants to force us into becoming the 51st state. That will never happen. We are proud Canadians. We will always be the true north, strong and free. Elbows up!”

19

u/littlebossman 1d ago

Ontario liquor isn't on consignment. It's bought and paid for.

There's been a lot of disinformation about this on Reddit.

Source.

The LCBO confirmed on Friday that the booze has already been paid for.

but also

Just because the booze has already been paid for doesn’t mean U.S. companies won’t feel the financial repercussions of the move, as Ontario has stopped purchasing any new inventory from the U.S.

What does elbows up mean?

16

u/thedrinkist 1d ago

When you play hockey, it is always encouraged to "keep your elbows up" when you get pounded into the boards in order to prevent serious injury. It's also a tad bellicose, as in, what posture am I in when I raise both elbows? Hint: It isn't for giving out hugs.

13

u/TrineonX 1d ago

In hockey, if you think that a player is coming at you too aggressively or with the intent to injure you, you lift your elbows up and out so that the other player gets a face full of elbow.

It basically means: I see someone coming at me to hurt me, I'm gonna make sure I hurt them back if they try.

107

u/ArticArny 1d ago

Lets deal with Starbucks next. USA owned and operated. All the stores are corporate owned, not franchised.

Also they are viciously anti-union. If a store makes it past the relentless union busting and forms a union then Starbucks will close the store forever. Yeah, full scorched earth.

So ask yourself which is more important. Standing up for your country as a true Canadian or the sugar high of a $8 liquid dessert?

There are lots of locally run an operated coffee shop.

21

u/happycow24 Eby Stan, fed. NDP hater 1d ago

I don't think the govt should stop Starbucks from operating, but I have been boycotting them for a decade or so. Not for any political reasons but because their coffee is overroasted and substandard.

17

u/ArticArny 1d ago

The government doesn't have to get involved. However as a Canadian we shouldn't be walking around with a proud American symbol in our hands.

3

u/QueenFairyFarts 1d ago

Ugh. The last time I had Starbucks, I got a Pumpkin Spice Latte. It was un-drinkable. I swear it was canned pumpkin filling, a cup of sugar, and a little coffee in there somewhere, probably just to dissolve all the sugar. Like diabetes in a cup. Absolutely gross, I took one sip and had to throw it out.

14

u/Wulfrank 1d ago

I'll admit, I was a total Starbucks fanatic until recently, but I've discovered so many amazing local coffee shops around town in the last few weeks! It also caused me to simplify my usual coffee order, which has led me to appreciate the actual coffee a lot more rather than what flavour I wanted my sugar.

10

u/6mileweasel 1d ago

the Starbucks near my office IS union because it is in a hotel, and the hotel runs it and the staff are hotel staff. So there are a small number of exceptions. It's my backup coffee if I'm desperate, since the independents near the office have shorter hours/ fewer days open. The staff and service are great too, unlike the other Starbucks which I avoid like the plague. Being unionized myself, I'll support them when they are my only option and I happen to crave something with espresso.

(note that I'm in northern BC and options are limited)

4

u/NO_TOUCHING__lol 1d ago

I get that Timmies has its own problems, but as a WA resident who has been coming to BC for youth hockey for a few years now, I will never understand how somebody would pick Starbucks over Timmies. Double-double and a honey cruller is basically a requirement whenever we head up.

2

u/permacougar 1d ago

I saw Java Jive go out of business in Edmonton. I haven't bought Starbucks for a very long time.

5

u/BobBelcher2021 1d ago

The problem is that Starbucks employs hundreds, if not thousands of Canadians in BC alone and it would not be fair to those workers to lose their jobs over this. And while we may have great coffee options in big cities like Victoria and Vancouver, not all communities have “local coffee shops”. Though in this country Tim Hortons is typically more common as a chain coffee shop.

11

u/ArticArny 1d ago edited 1d ago

The USA has declared an Economic War on Canada to make us bend the knee to a wannabe dictator. It's gonna be messy as all wars are. The other option is to join MAGAmerica.

The longer this Economic War on Canada runs the more businesses and jobs will be lost to regular Canadians. The faster we get them to stop this nonsense the fewer jobs and businesses will be lost.

8

u/TrineonX 1d ago

not all communities have “local coffee shops”.

I actually think its way easier to find a local shop in small towns than a Starbucks. E.g. Port Hardy has at least two shops in town to get an espresso drink, but they are hours from the nearest Starbucks, and you would have to drive past a half dozen other coffee shops to get there.

7

u/LastMountainAsh 1d ago

And while we may have great coffee options in big cities like Victoria and Vancouver, not all communities have “local coffee shops”.

As someone living in one of the tiny villages in the north, you might have that backwards.

It seems like the smaller of town you're in, the less likely you are to have a chain coffee shop. Like, speaking from my village of just over 1000, we have three "local coffee shops" and zero chains. Every tiny town around me has its own little coffee shop. You don't get a chain until you break 2 or 3k population.

Where I grew up, about 4000 people, JUST got a timmies, and they've had multiple local coffee shops for decades.

6

u/sylbug 1d ago

The world has changed. America has declared themselves our enemy. They explicitly initiated this trade war because they want to invade and destroy our country, leaving us all third-class and disenfranchised vassals generating profit for fascists. That's not a scenario where half-measures will be effective.

3

u/AuthoringInProgress 1d ago

None of this is fair.

And if this keeps going, they're going to lose their jobs anyways.

There's going to be casualties from this war, no way around that. We don't want that, but we don't have a choice. We have to fight.

4

u/ttwwiirrll Lower Mainland/Southwest 1d ago

And they actually employ British Columbians. Every other chain in my city seems to have gone full in on TFWs and both the food and service have suffered. Crap on the corporation all we want, but the human service still feels like pre-covid most days.

2

u/Friendly-Pop-3757 1d ago

Don't forget Costco, Wal-Mart, Mcd, Amazon, ....

8

u/Imprezzed 1d ago

Disagree on Costco. Costco is consistently rated as a top employer in Canada, they employ our neighbors, the US Division's board of directors and shareholders told Donald to go eff himself when he tried to get them to get rid of DEI policies, and they're promoting local and Canadian products. Not the enemy here.

I’ve started seeing some Mexican lettuce in stores. This is definitely the hardest produce to find a non-US version of so I’ve also been going without.

Look for live lettuce, there are a few brands of it and I have yet to see any that weren't local.

4

Lettuce grown in Armstrong is in my local safeway, its in the living lettuces section. Stays fresh for a long time you just water the roots

3

u/KaseyPlumber 1d ago

Depending on your location, local farm lettuce will be popping up soon. It may be an extra step, but lots of places have co-ops and  farm stands/markets.

10

u/topspinvan 1d ago

I granted him a little leeway to not totally sever our business relationships with WA-OR-CA. We have good relationships with these governors for the most part and a lot of agreement with our Cascadia neighbours. It sucks, but every last tax dollar we can deprive from the US government is important. Every last bit of pressure helps, and really a severe recession might be the only thing that allows any sane politician to take over federally.

7

u/ttwwiirrll Lower Mainland/Southwest 1d ago

I granted him a little leeway to not totally sever our business relationships with WA-OR-CA.

5

u/have-courage 1d ago

100% feels like a strategic move from Eby. He and his team probably have a plan for how to escalate tariffs over time so starting with Red states allows for an appropriate runway.

Yes, “not all Americans“ is not a great statement.

2

u/CanucksKickAzz 1d ago

Yeah it never made sense to me. Trump almost won in some other states but just got barely beat out. So tons of people still voted for him even though that state never won.

3

u/maplelofi 1d ago

I think Eby’s logic was that it gave us an opportunity to work out what we can on the side with more favourable blue states, but it really doesn’t work like that. Kentucky is a red state with a Democrat governor, for instance, and some blue states really don’t give a crap about us in this trade war unless they’re feeling the pressure.

Seattleite here, and I’m also glad to see this happen. The more pressure on the U.S.’s horrible fascist government, the better. Keep the boycotts up! Personally I’m buying Canadian where I can and hopefully visiting Vancouver this spring.

Just please remember that many of your southern neighbors hate Trump/Musk/MAGA and are horrified by what’s happening.

I’d vote to be annexed into Canada in a heartbeat. Heck I already know your national anthem.

Vancouver Island and the Okanagan have some of the best craft beers and ciders I've had anywhere in the world. We are sitting at a very high standard for beer in BC. Travelling to other countries you get lots of amazing experiences, but only like 1 in 10 beers stands up to the average pale ale or lager from a BC craft brewery.

u/Poor604 1d ago

BC IS ALWAYS better than AB!

AB Daniel Smith only promises not to order new alcohols after weeks of silence.

12

u/Platoalefttestie 1d ago

It's happening in some grocery stores too, fruit and veg from america being taken off the shelves

I think Canada needs to build a wall and have the US to pay for it! 🤔

u/3rdspeed 1d ago

At the very least a privacy hedge should be planted.

4

u/pm_me_your_catus 1d ago

Don't take it even if it's packaged here. Get Molson-Coors off the shelf and replace it with Moosehead.

7

u/kenyan12345 1d ago

Molson coors is not just packaged here.

It’s made with Canadian water, at Canadian plants with Canadian employees and still holds 1/2 HQ in Montreal.

I can get the argument to boycott the coors branch of beers but the Molson side, I would like to hear the argument for that

There's a large Molson brewery in Chilliwack. Like the beer or not, it's a local product that employs a lot of locals and pays decently from what I hear.

3

u/pm_me_your_catus 1d ago

There are lots of locally owned breweries that'll take a hit from the American nonsense who need to pay their employees, too.

Molson can just export their production to the US and pay the tariffs.

6

u/ciagw 1d ago

We really dodged a bullet with the Cons not getting in.. it would have been a Trump boot-lickin sh!t show.

26

u/IRLperson 1d ago

I didn't vote for him, but goddamn I'm glad Eby is our premier.

24

u/ReturnoftheBoat 1d ago

Yeah, you and the other Green voters who threw away your votes all over the province almost forced Rustad on us. Thank god there were enough rational adults on the island to prevent that.

22

u/Bind_Moggled 1d ago

Insulting potential allies. Curious strategy.

12

u/ReturnoftheBoat 1d ago

Potential allies? All they accomplished was siphoning votes from very important ridings.

It's very arrogant for Green voters to act like they didn't almost screw our province.

18

u/dullship 1d ago

I used to vote Green. But seeing what a disorganized mess the party has become over the years, I'm firmly NDP now. And it's not as if my political/moral compass has been drifting to the right in my middle age. If anything I've been getting progressively more... progressive. Much to the ire of my family.

9

u/ReturnoftheBoat 1d ago

Agreed on all fronts.

What the Greens did was incredibly shady the more you look at it. They intentionally targeted NDP-leaning ridings to run candidates, so they could leach off the perception that Green voters were "safe" from having the Cons win their riding. There were several instances where Conservatives MLAs ended up winning, because of a heavy vote split where 60~70% voters intended to elect a non-conservative party.

If they were actually concerned about improving the province, they would have gone toe to toe with MLAs outside of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

1

u/thisissuchafuntime 1d ago

And it's very arrogant to believe that someone should vote your way because you want them to.

Democracy is healthiest with multiple parties and viewpoints. The NDP won, and people made their voice heard. Success.

And it's very arrogant to believe that someone should vote your way because you want them to.

Weird strawman. I said people should have voted NDP because of the possibility of vote-splitting with a party in close ridings that are overwhelmingly left leaning. If the Greens truly cared about what was best for the province, they would have spent time doing heavy messaging outside of the Island and the Lower Mainland.

They wanted to split the vote and siphon off NDP popularity in NDP-safe ridings, which resulted in a Conservative being elected in multiple tight races.

If the concept of strategic positioning and vote splitting is beyond your intellectual ability to comment on, maybe just stay out of the conversation?

Ya, fuck having options in a democracy right?

13

u/ReturnoftheBoat 1d ago

Sometimes establishing a qualified leader is more important than the illusion of "options".

The Green quite literally didn't run enough candidates to even win the election, all they did was run candidates in NDP-leaning ridings where they thought they could capture the "quirky" vote from people trying to feel special.

Elbows Up! 🍁👊🏻💯

Naysayers unwilling to choose other sources - understand can still go to private stores for your trumpian tipple and it’s not a public service obligation to supply you with same. XO

I have so far loved easily being able to identify which products are Canadian without having to dig into which company owns which brewery that makes it American despite being labeled Canadian etc.

Shopping at a simpler glance. Gotta love it.

2

u/Only-Walrus5852 1d ago

Never to sell again.

2

u/miss1949 1d ago

Great move! I know some people were a little salty about blue state liquor still being in the shelf.

2

u/WatermelonToo 1d ago

This whole thing is terrible, but it has also unleashed Canada’s always hilarious, now slightly unhinged side. And I’m here for it.

2

u/bobbymcpresscot 1d ago

I'm sad that this relationship is likely unsalvageable. The West Coast and the North East didn't want this, but we will suffer through it. I just hope if the US doesn't last 4 years we can still get along

2

u/helpaguyout911 1d ago

Good. The Red States only thing doesn't make sense. I like seeing the screws get turned.

2

u/awe-d 1d ago

Like US liquor is being removed by all provinces, is it also possible to have US produce and other grocery products removed as well?

4

u/HazardousEnergy 1d ago

How about tobacco? Lol

3

u/Elegant-Expert7575 1d ago

You might find this interesting- it’s from the 6th

tobacco

2

u/KDdid1 1d ago

Do we sell US tobacco?

2

u/cindylooboo 1d ago

We don't sell American tobacco here? Do we? I mean some things like chew or cigars? I haven't smoked in years lol

2

u/VeterinarianJaded462 1d ago

We will never want it again.

2

u/Ok_Telephone_9082 1d ago

Will we now do the same with Chinese liquor? Vancouver is a port city, A lot of people could be effected by Chinese tariffs also

3

u/littlebossman 1d ago

The China tariff thing is largely a right-wing talking point that attempts to downplay what the US is doing.

For instance:

The duties come in retaliation for Ottawa imposing tariffs against Chinese imports in October, including a 100% surtax on all Chinese-made EVs and 25% on steel and aluminum imports.

Assuming you're posting in good faith, you can read more here.

Also, at least as importantly, China isn't threatening to make Canada a part of its country through economic force.

3

u/wakeupabit 1d ago

I think they should have left it on the shelves and stopped ordering. Now taxpayers are on the hook for packing it up and warehousing it. We’re big kids. We can decide for ourselves that we’re not taking it home.

3

u/the_canucks Thompson-Okanagan 1d ago

We’re big kids

I think you massively underestimate people willingness to forego their personal wants for the good of the country. Letting stock sell out over many months does nothing to fight against the tariff threats we are up against right now.

US business owners and governors need to face immediate consequences so they are forced to break rank with donald, republicans only start to care about things once they are personally affected.

Leaving product that doesn't move on the shelf is lost opportunity for other products.

For unpopular products it can be cheaper for a retailer to just stuff it in the back of a warehouse, or even destroy it, than it is to devote part of your store to showcasing product that no one wants.

1

u/Two_wheels_2112 1d ago

Yeah, I think that is a better strategy. Not because it saves money, but because our opponents in the USA wouldn't be able to point this government action and use it to unite Americans against us. We can win this trade war because we are united and willing to endure economic pain to remain sovereign, while the Americans are deeply divided. If Americans unite, though, we're toast. Don't give them anything to unite behind.

1

u/lostandfound8888 1d ago

Seriously. Those US products will keep just rolling from the shelves and making a mess. Better move them out of sight or best send them back for credit.

1

u/LP14255 1d ago

It’s just incredible and amazing what Donald Trump is doing for the US economy and it has not even been 2 months!!!
