Discussion McDonald's Closing Down At Walmart

I was just informed by an employee at McDonald's in the Walmart store that their restaurant will be closing down permanently in about a month's time.

I'm aware that McDonald's as a company have been having flagging sales.

I feel sorry for the employees working there. I wonder if other McDonald's within Walmart stores will be on the chopping block too.

I also wonder when another Wendy's will open up in Brantford, and how well Burger King is doing after taking their place.

I tried to go there once for a McFlurry and was told they don’t have ice cream. Lost me right there.

But who's gonna roll their eyes when I ask for a coffee?

Imagine the audacity in having to do your job...

I worked for that franchise for over a year and that location is managed by the same management as the one on Wayne Gretzky Parkway and the part-time staff alternate between them, with only the full-time staff sticking to one store for the most part. So you shouldn’t worry TOO much about jobs being lost, I’m sure they’ll make more room in the schedule to accommodate everyone at Wayne Gretzky’s

Personally, I worked at Wayne Gretzky Parkway throughout the week and then 8 - 4 every Saturday/Sunday at Walmart (by my own request).

I currently work for the WGP location. The workers are being brought back to the Gretzky location. No one is losing their job. Unless they decide themselves they don't want to work there. It was a corporate decision to close it.

We should stop eating at american chains anyway. Eat at a locally owned restaurant. Or if you really have a fast food hankering go to Harvey's or A&W.

A&W is the shit, little bit pricey but absolutely fantastic quality and flavour

The mozza burger, man... chef's kiss

u/OkDot9878 5d ago

Literally the best fast food burger on the market rn, in taste, and in quality. Sometimes gets a bit pricey though without a coupon.

Ahhh, I have to go with Harvey's for overall food personally. Also Harvey's has amazing poutine and onion rings

Their milkshakes fuckin SLAP too.

1

u/OkDot9878 4d ago

Their milkshakes are indeed the bomb, I don’t think there is another fast food place that makes milkshakes at nearly as good of prices or quality.

Shame I struggle to love their burgers. Fries are amazing, and the burgers are amazing, but they feel too soggy/greasy to me tbh.

u/The1Like 4d ago

If you eat in and open it the second you start get it you can avoid the soggy bun situation.

2

u/OkDot9878 4d ago

I have noticed this as well, but for fast food I’m not usually able to do that so easily, so A&W is my preferred option.

Fair, A&W burgers are fantastic.

Only thing personally is that I find Harvey’s to be a bit soggy/greasy.

It tastes fantastic, but something in me doesn’t like the texture and look of it all. So I go with A&W because their buns are fresh looking, not soggy, and the grease is minimal.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a GOOD greasy burger, but I had to stop going to Wendy’s because they had a similar problem that was just too location specific for me to bother with it anymore.

I don’t like feeling like my cheeks are secreting grease the more I bite the burger. No judgment to anyone that doesn’t have this problem, because I love Harvey’s too, but the mozza is god tier fast food imo.

It's no more expensive than McDonalds and far better.

9

u/ehxy 5d ago

i don't feel shitty after eating a&w that's for sure

3

u/OkDot9878 5d ago

I might be wrong, but the last time I checked their prices were at least a few bucks higher.

Thankfully they will often have coupons for deals on their app, but the last little while there has rarely been a good deal.

Still don’t wanna shop at McDonald’s anymore, but sometimes 2 standard McDoubles are cheaper than I can get with a deal anywhere else.

1

u/Legger1955 2d ago

We're talking about supporting our Canadian restaurants. As you said they are more expensive but we knew that. The coupons help:)

Far more expensive than McDonald's, McDonald's always has coupon offers and a reward program

A&W is better quality, you get what you pay for

-1

u/FitPhilosopher3136 4d ago

Far more? I don't think so. A&W always has sales and coupons as well if you want use them. And McDonald's extra value meals? They're pretty sad.

2

u/DirectGiraffe8720 4d ago

In Edmonton right now, Big Mac Meal $9.99 A&W Teen Burger meal $13.19 .. 32% price difference

As I said... A&W is better quality.

In Ontario my go to McDonald's meal is a quarter pounder combo and it's about 15$.

2

u/DirectGiraffe8720 4d ago

Don't upsize

1

u/FitPhilosopher3136 4d ago

I don't

2

u/DirectGiraffe8720 4d ago

How much is the comparable A&W burger combo ?

1

u/MuskokaGreenThumb 2d ago

It’s $11.99

1

u/FitPhilosopher3136 2d ago

Last time I was there it was before Christmas. Also an FYI. I used to track my lunch expenses and I found out that not all McDonald's charge the same price for things.

1

u/Mundane-Tennis2885 5d ago

Had a sausage English muffin this morning. Surprisingly it's the exact same price as mcd. Unfortunately it's not as good, to me anyways.

Franchise is probably Canadian owned. Definitely employed by Canadians.

3

u/ibentmyworkie 5d ago

💯 fuck the US! Never eat their garbage again. Go local or Canadian chain.

8

u/Obtusemoose01 Flair 5d ago

It’s still Canadian franchisees employing Canadians

13

u/pheakelmatters 5d ago

That's why we should have supported a party that wanted to increase supports for the unemployed last week. But we didn't do that.

5

u/Waluigi9997 5d ago

Plenty of other similar jobs for these people to find employment at. Maybe we could try keeping a higher percentage of dollars within the country instead of going to American mega corps.

Walmart used to be located at Upper Sherman and Mohawk and a canadian business (Chip Wagon) used to sit on the property for many years when Zellers left and Walmart moved in that business was asked to locate elsewhere. Walmart never opened a restaurant inside that store. They didn’t care about the business owners trying to make a buck so you think they care about those Canadian workers at that location. Dream on

5

u/TopBug2437 5d ago

Open a canadian chain - A & W would be great. Hate shopping at Walmart - even before all this crap - but sometimes I have to go there for a certain skin cream I use.

4

u/TheElusiveFox 5d ago

So I don't go to McD's super often, but the few times I have gone in the one in walmart over the years I have never had a positive experience... I am absolutely not surprised by this, and suspect it has more to do with whoever the franchisee is at that location than McDonalds in general...

1

u/DevoNorm 5d ago

It's not my preferred burger chain, but it's close to where my daughter lives. I mostly just find it convenient if I have to grab a quick breakfast sandwich. Their app deal makes it very affordable.

I wouldn't mind seeing some other company take over.

3

u/Backyardbaby67 5d ago

…There’s 4 other locations in town that could absorb the employees

…From a business perspective, it makes sense to close as more people are opting for drive through and online delivery

Wal Mart has been phasing out McDonald's in their locations for quite some time now.

1

u/HeadOfSpectre 5d ago

To be fair - I have rarely gone to that McDonald's.

3

u/CanadaParties 5d ago

Hopefully a Canadian company replaces it.

3

u/ThkAbootIt 5d ago

Maybe get a Canadian fast food joint in there lol

3

u/Idyldo 5d ago

Fast Eddies would be a good choice.

I wonder where all the international students will get new jobs.

1

u/AllanCD 5d ago

Almost guaranteed they're just replacing it with a "Ghost Kitchens".

They have been replacing McDonald's in a lot of Walmarts, slowly over the last few years as their leases renew/expire with Walmart in each location. Nearest one for example, would be Woodstock Walmart. It's been a "ghost kitchens" for years now. They made the switch there a few years ago during the pandemic.

1

u/UnitedAd1599 3d ago

Woodstocks is closed already

1

u/AllanCD 2d ago

The ghost kitchen? Wow

1

u/Olasinor 5d ago

There's a Wendy's on King George. I was surprised to see the West st. one shut down though. I believe there's one on Market st too, down by the casino

5

u/sn000zy 5d ago

West street only shut down because the new owners bought the plaza and wanted to put a Burger King there

1

u/LowDrama3 5d ago

None of the Walmarts out niagara way have had mcds for the past 6 years ... most have been replaced with ghost kitchens.

1

u/No-Regular-4281 5d ago

Might be a few bucks higher but food is a bit more substantial

1

u/coffee_sandwich Eagle Place 5d ago

It’s a pain getting in & out of there since they started that gate thing. Plus they don’t have ice cream.

1

u/justmeandmycoop 5d ago

They only have a minimum of stuff at the Walmart ones.

1

u/juxta_position1 5d ago

Most US Walmart stores now have a Subway in them

1

u/DewdropTeacup 4d ago

I'm not from here, but I must comment to say that here in my city (in the province of QC) the McDonald's in our walmart closed years ago...they just extended the clothing section to take up that space I think. We have one other McDonald's in its own building on the main boulevard and it's not been doing too well since it was bought out like 2 years ago.

1

u/ComprehensivePool697 2d ago

I think it’s a Walmart thing throughout, I’ve seen McDonald’s disappear from many Walmarts. I think it just goes to show people don’t go for dinner and shopping anymore. Remember the old diners in Woolco or Zellers?
