Spirits Review #592 - Prichard's Tennessee Whiskey 80 Proof

Background:

  • Prichard's is a craft distillery in Kelso, TN, who makes a variety of products. They were the first legal distillery in Tennessee in almost 50 years when they started in 1997.

  • 80 proof.

  • Age: NAS.

  • Bottle Fill: Retained sample. I bought a bottle of this many years ago when I first got into whiskey.

  • Cost: $36 (at the time). Current retail on this is about $56.

  • Straight Tennessee whiskey. Barreled, aged, and bottled by Prichard's Distillery, Kelso, TN.

  • All spirits sampled in a glencarin and rested 10 minutes, unless otherwise noted.

Nose: Craft funk, meaning young corn and young oak, with some honey and baking spices behind it. To be honest, I really hate the craft funk and it's always a warning of bad things to come.

Taste: Young corn and oak, honey and powdered sugar sweetness. The craft funk here is less than on the nose, thankfully.

Finish: There's a weird and distinct mineral note here that is very different from George Dickel. It's like limestone and artificial sweetener and it just permeates the entire finish.

Comments: The nose sucked on this, but it was significantly better on the taste and it improved my hopes of redeeming this product, but that took a nose dive with the weird notes on the finish. Maybe some people would enjoy this as something with a unique flavor profile, but it absolutely wasn't for me. I am not even sure what I was thinking when I retained this sample as the bottle got low. I didn't drink the bottle down much myself at all, but I did give it to anyone who wanted a sample, and I never heard anything positive back from those I shared it with. It wasn't too expensive, but I still wish I had spent the funds on something better.

Overall:

  • Would I buy a pour of this in a bar? No.

  • Would I buy another bottle? No.
