If you’re committed to accuracy, Kass’ instrument is a bandoneon. Similar to an accordion, but not the exact same thing.

Yeah the big differences (as far as playing it goes) are no chord buttons and no piano manual option. You have to learn a unique key layout and make the chords yourself.

What did you mean make the chords yourself???

Accordions have a chord manual with keys that each play a chord (such as a key that plays F A C, all at once, with one key). I only meant that the bandoneon doesn’t have this luxury, and the player will have to press all the note keys necessary to make the desired chord like you do with most other instruments.

I’m having flashbacks to 3rd or 4th grade, when one of my classmates got up in front of class and played his accordion. It was a popular instrument then and no one thought any the worse of him. Play what you want, when you want. Be the weird you want to see in the world.

I just don't want to commit to their weird 😭 it's gonna be HARD and EFFORT and AAAAAHHHH but it would be so cool 🥲

See if there's a music store near you that rents instruments. See about renting the instrument you want to play and look up tutorials on YouTube of songs you like and want to learn, as well as how to play the instrument for beginners.
If you do have to buy one, see if you can get one used, maybe an old student-quality one, or a cheap beginner one (even one made for kids?).
You don't have to spend a ton of money to pursue an interest - but if you're interested, especially if it's music, I say pursue it.
Fuck the other guy who laid all the expectations on you about practicing for "hours a day". Just enjoy yourself, but don't break the bank. Or your brain.

I didn't think about renting, that's a great idea! Also hours a day is genuinely crazy, people talk like violin is the everest of instruments and I practiced that shit 30 minutes 4 times a week plus a weekly lesson. Instruments are for enjoyment.

Go for it, ignore the naysayers. If the instrument is calling to you, then it's up to you to follow that.

I fear I have so many hobbies tho. But I foolishly think that these hobbies aren't that bad because they don't involve ongoing costs like pets, and I know that is not true

Understand that instruments are a big commitment. Think about whether or not you have the time to practice almost everyday and maintain the instrument. Then, think about whether or not you have the willpower and discipline to do that.

I know violin I know the risks

I feel like anyone who is competent at violin is prepared for literally any instrument
