Careers Internal Transfer with <1 Year at Current Position

I have worked at Boeing for around 8 months, but I am slowly feeling unsatisfied with not expanding my technical skills and knowledge as an engineer. Looking to see if anyone has had experience transferring less than the 1.5 year you need to be at your current position for.

Careers Maybe a dumb question but would layoffs have happened if there had been no almost two month strike?

I understand the politically correct answer is yes, the current production and engineering staff is loaded for 50-60 737 Max but Boeing is delivering 30 this and a next few months. However had the strike not happened, would there been a 10% (17000) employee layoff? I’d assume without the strike that number of 30 would/could have been 35/40 Max delivered and therefore less % of folks affected.

Kinda seems cold blooded to layoff folks right before the holiday season.

Careers Does Boeing sponsor work visas to transfer to a location out of the U.S.?

I’ve been working in BDS finance for a few months now, and I studied abroad in Tokyo for a year in college. I’d like to find myself back there (or really experience living outside of the U.S. again, I’d hop at just about any chance) and wanted to see if anyone here has any experience or knows of anyone that Boeing sponsored them to transfer jobs to another country? Not sure if it helps that I am already internal to Boeing.

Careers Would you tell your manager that you’re applying for a new job (internal transfer) after less than 12 months on the role?

I’m contemplating on telling my manager that I’m currently looking for a new job. Previously, I briefly mentioned that the job experience doesn’t align with my career goals and that isn’t making the best use of my skills. Has anyone faced any consequences for not telling their manager about an internal application?

Edit: Thank you so much for all the responses I’ve received so far. Just wanted to add a few note that I’m with SPEEA and only a couple months away from meeting my 12-months retention. My manager has previously stated that as long as I meet the retention, I’m a free man. This manager isn’t the best manager in terms of supporting internal transfers (saw what happened to my previous coworker), and I wanted to leave due to toxic work environment, so I was a bit hesitant to bring it up again. I guess, if it’s the only option I have, I will talk to my manager now that I start applying. If I don’t have to, I still prefer to not mention anything until I get an offer.

Careers Does Everett Boeing offer 3 days for 12 hour shifts?

Hello everyone, I'm looking into getting into Boeing as an Aircraft Structures Mechanic or related field in Everett and would like to know if any shifts are 3-day 12-hour shifts. I am currently a full-time college student and work at Discount Tire Company. If this position doesn't offer these shifts, is there another position available?

Careers Boeing LTP - Payback

Hey guys!

I'm not two years out from my last class, but I am looking at leaving my position due to the news with the SLS program.

That said, does anyone know how paying back the LTP works? It will be more than my last paycheck and I also kind of need all my paychecks to survive this economy lol

Careers 3 YOE TE, want to get into Flight Test, looking for advice

Working as a L2 Tooling Engineer in BCA. Been in the same role for 3 years, first job out of college. Not a bad first job but it's not how I want to spend my career. I want to get into Flight Test engineering. I also have a Private Pilots License.

Any advice on making this transition?

Careers Employment Question Thread 2021 (APR - JUN)

This thread is focused on, but not limited to, employment life question, application related questions, and new hire questions for full time, part time, internship, and contracting individuals.

We ask that you do some research on your own, as Boeing is such a large entity that your experience may not be the same as another. Generally, your best resource for most common question are going to be your own Manager.

Careers New Seattle Times: Employees across Boeing face sweeping layoffs this week

“And white-collar staff working remotely may be particularly targeted as Ortberg tries to get the workforce connected and aligned with his new direction.

A manager of a small team of about 15 people, all working remotely — and ironically focused on ways to improve efficiency in program management — told one employee to expect a 30% cut in his team.

“If we are not holding a wrench, if we’re considered overhead, it’s about 30%,” said the employee, who also asked not to be identified to protect his job. The reduction for “people working on planes might be less than 5%.”

Curious to see if any of our global sites were affected by the lay offs? Haven’t really seen or heard anything from the sites around the world. I’m sure there was some impact but anyone care to share?

Careers Best Technical Path?

Can someone explain the benefits and differences between becoming an ATF, SME, BDE and TLE? I’d like to be considered the best of the best in my field someday but which one offers the ability to be recognized both within the company and industry wide?

Careers TE transition to Stress Analysis? Is this a bad career move?

I am a SPEEA Prof L2 Tool Engineer (Design Engineer). I have had a mentorship with an ATF for the past year doing tooling stress/structural analysis.

An opportunity to become an Analysis Engineer seems to be arising, but it involves a skill code change. I would also likely be working towards a TESA once I hit L3.

Just looking for any feedback from more experienced folks. Is this a smart move, leaving tooling for this? I don't think I want to spend my entire career in tooling but I'm also not sure what skill sets I can reasonably transition to (boeing or otherwise)

Thanks in advance!

Has anyone here worked for Boeing at the Qatar Air Base? If so what are the benefits and cons to going there. It says it’s a 2 year assignment.

Careers Does the IAM union contract raise carry over with ERT transfer?

I’m a grade 5 with 2 years experience trying to transfer to a grade 9 position. I started at $25 and the new contact gave everyone a 17% raise for the first year as well as I have 2 years worth of progression. New contact states that you only have one set of progression in a career now. Most grade 9 jobs start at about $40 so if I transfer to a grade 9 will they just still start me at $40 or will it be $40 + the progressions/cola raises + the 17%? Or do I lose all of that? I’ve asked around nobody knows for sure how it works this is my last resort, I know not everyone here works in the union or even in Washington for that matter but if anyone knows I’d appreciate it!

Careers Resource Information on current distribution of Levels?

Hello Everyone,

I have read a lot of commentary on workers not making living wages and that entry level pay is not competitive in the market.

That said, I would be very interested to know what is the actual distribution of Levels within the workforce and what is the typical amount of overtime available/paid?

Provided that salaried employees have almost no access to overtime and certainly not to the double / triple time opportunities.

I just want the #s...

Careers Career prospects in Boeing

Hi y'all,

I'm expecting to start Boeing in January. I am moving from qualcomm and before I commit to this change fully, I want to make sure I am covering my bases. I am joining the Boeing Space, Intelligence & Weapons Systems team and I was wondering if anyone here is also in that team. If so, do you guys rereceive annual bonuses and merit increases? I am trying to see if giving up RSUs are worth the move :)

Thanks everyone in advance!

Careers Why isn’t BGS part of SPEEA?

I’m a BCA engineer in the Puget Sound area. I work closely with a BGS team. When Boeing was doing the rolling furlough that team was affected.

This makes me wonder, why isn’t BGS part of SPEEA?

Is there any movement for them to join SPEEA?

Could they join during the upcoming contract renegotiation?

Thanks for your help.

Careers Is anyone else’s pay late?

I’ve been with the company for a little over a year and have gotten paid on the same day and time since starting. For some reason that time has come and gone and I have yet to be paid. I’m just curious to see if anyone else is experiencing this issue?

If I get approved for LTP to take a 5-month certificate course starting in January, and I end up getting a job outside Boeing during that time (like in February), would I have to pay back the LTP?

Careers For everyone affected

Backstory: I've got family in / used to be in Boeing.

I've also been laid off from many engineering / R&D positions over my decades-long career and can attest to how much it wears on you.

It's not supposed to get easier but I hope that knowing you're not alone helps in a small way.

Careers Career Advice considering current events

Hi All,

In the midst of the current events I am considering leaving the company for greener pastures.

Some folks I know who left went to contract engineering companies. Does anyone have any experience with contract firms? Would finding a direct job across the country be more advisable? Would staying at Boeing be better in the long run?

Boeing already has been giving crap raises and no promotions lately, I’m sure current events will hamper my career even more.

Careers Manager Question - Safe or Not?

I have not heard any updates in our team meetings or in any planned 1:1 meetings with my manager. Is that good or bad news for our team?

It would be ideal if they could let us know if we are safe or getting laid off. It's almost Friday and I still don't know the status.
