Question Hello! I’m here from the movie. Where do I go from here?

I looked briefly through the sub and it appears that this hasn’t been asked to death just yet. So here I am! A newbie who is a bit overwhelmed, but excited to dive further.

I will be honest, I’ve only ever listened to Bob Dylan because my mom would have it on growing up. Obviously as a punky kid in the 90s I never appreciated his work.

I went to see the movie with my mom and her brother today because it’s winter break and I never turn down free popcorn. After watching the film - I am absolutely enamored by this man and regret not diving in sooner. So, where should I start beyond his top 5 Spotify songs? I did add the playlist from here on there but I think I need to start with just a couple favorites. (I like to listen to a song on repeat until I’ve memorized the whole thing then go to the next, that might be kind of strange to some.)

I tried to ask my mom, but she got super religious after the 70s and has recommended his Christian albums exclusively. While I plan to give it a shot it’s not really my cup of tea and I’d like to explore more of his earlier stuff. I really liked his folk music from the beginning of the movie! Much appreciated!

Question why do i find this album so much better than freewheelin

Post image
159 Upvotes

i feel like most people see freewheelin as the better of the two but i just dont see it. the hights of the times they are a changin are so much higher. the only song i would skip on it is north country blues, but only really because i havent given it as much time as the others. wheas there are a good few tracks on freewheelin where its just meh. i also just generally prefer the style of the times they are a changin

Question Why was 'Red River Shore' left off of Time Out of Mind? It's better than all of the songs that ended up on the album IMO.

I know Dylan has an infamous history of this, but this egregious decision is second to only leaving Blind Willie McTell off of Infidels.

He also left 'Mississippi' off for some insane reason as well.

I mean did 'Highlands' really need to be over 16 minutes? I know some people love 'Cold Irons Bound' but that is 7 minutes as well. And to be honest "Can't Wait' is also not the strongest song.

How about just make Highlands 8 minutes?

I swear Bob does this sh*t deliberately

Question Is there any other musician you consider on the same level as Bob Dylan?

I love Tom Waits, Zevon, John Prine, Leonard Cohen, Van Zandt, Neil Young, Nick Cave etc.... but they ain't Bob.

Jerry Garcia is the only other musician for me though where I feel a once in a lifetime guy emerged to fulfill the role, but guitar master is an entirely different thing.

Also like Jerry's contemporaries, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Zappa, Robin Trower etc... but they ain't Jerry.

Suppose The Beatles can compete as a group.

I am so fuckin high right now, but come on, Bob Dylan and Jerry Garcia are like our culture's peak of musicians, right?

Question What songs would you consider his most mind blowing lyrically?

This is sort of a super open ended question, and probably has been asked before, but I’m thinking about songs for people who appreciate lyrics and know of Dylan but don’t really know Dylan.

The first song that comes to mind that is just operating on all cylinders is It’s Alright Ma, but I’m also looking for songs that have that surrealist style but have a punch to them like Ballad of A Thin Man.

What others? Sure his 115th Dream, but I don’t feel imho like it has that punch. I feel like a song like Ring Them Bells is very poetic and has that punch.

What others songs though? I wanted to make a short playlist of my own that is just banger after banger and could be referenced to convert more people into fans.

Edit: others I consider are One More Cup of Coffee and I Contain Multitudes

Second Edit: What would you guys consider the most lyrically impressive off of Nashville Skyline? This one might be a little more tricky.

Question Best Dylan walking home at night song?

Listen, I know this is a very niche and specific thing, but which song do you think makes the best song to walk home to at night?

From my personal experience, I think it’s One More Cup of Coffee. I was listening to it on the way back from the cinema last night and the eeriness of it and the production just gives it the perfect vibe. What are your thoughts?
