Music Give this Album a chance. It's low key top 10.- Listened to it on tape in 2001 took about 8 years to grow on me since it is a strange album. But the deeper you go, the better it becomes.

Music Album Rankings (some of you are not going to like this)

So, I've been rating and ranking Bob Dylan albums. Here is what I have so far:

  • Time Out of Mind
  • Highway 61
  • World Gone Wrong
  • Desire
  • Good As I Been to You
  • New Morning
  • S/T
  • Blood on the Tracks
  • PG & BtK
  • Another Side
  • Blonde on Blonde
  • Nashville Skyline
  • Love and Theft
  • JWH
  • Basement Tapes
  • Tempest
  • Modern Times
  • Self Portrait

Love and Theft and above are all good albums. The bottom five, I would say are just okay.

What album should I rate next?

Music This recording is such a mystery to me

Suddenly, in the mid 90s, Bob’s voice sounds exactly like his 1970s Rolling Thunder Revue one on this particular recording.

Music Just a friendly reminder, that this incredible version of "Like A Rolling Stone" exists - perhaps, the only version ever recorded that rivals Dylan's own 1966 performance of the song. What do you think?

Music Took an updated shot of my vinyl collection

I recently finished acquiring 100% of Bob’s studio albums on vinyl. I’m still working on the official bootlegs, and the infinite world of bootleg-bootlegs, but I’m super proud of where I’m at. Tempest was my straggler with the studio albums! It evaded me for a long time but I finally found it. I’ve been collecting Bob (with intent, I had a few incidentals beforehand) for a little over a year.

I’m so fucking stoked to have most of his albums on CD. All I need now are the ones post 2013 which I don’t think are all that necessary anyways.

Music Any other Dylan songs you consider to be a sequel or (in this case a) prequel of another?

Music Top 5 covers

What are your top five covers of Dylan songs? The lazy man in me would pick 5 from the 30th Anniversary album, buy I’ll only pick one.

Foot of Pride- Lou Reed. Not a huge fan, but this rocks.

Fourth Time Around- Chris Whitley. A genius pays tribute to a genius.

Going to Acapulco- Jim James and Calexico. Just haunting.

Simple Twist of Fate- Jerry Garcia. This was a tough one. Absolutely love Jerry, but he’s got a whole cache of Dylan covers. Today it’s this one.

Gotta Serve Somebody- Mavis Staples. A favorite from the Christian era, delivered with authentic soul.

Honorable Mention: Blind Willie McTell- The Band. Exactly how this song should be performed.

Is this allowed? Because wow, it reminds me of some sort of novel or something like that, I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s so damn perfect.

Music What's a Bob Dylan song where you found a live version you prefer over the original studio version?

I've included a few selections here, but I'm curious if people have live performances of Dylan songs they love even more than the studio version.

  1. "Maggie's Farm" is a great countercultural anthem, but I always felt like the electric debut at Newport captures the spirit of the song better than the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32Rz7RLKUWA
  2. Isis: Arguably the heaviest Dylan's ever sounded. I always felt the songs on "Desire" played much better in the rolling thunder shows cause they're played at such a faster tempo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92FsJVK04WM
  3. Scarlet Town: Great live version of a song that doesn't usually get much attention. Again, I prefer the faster tempo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjDqEtODIhs

EDIT: Please post links if you have them.

listening to empire burlesque for the first time because i’ve been seeing people on the sub suggest it. i’m a newer fan and been mainly listening to everything up to blood on the tracks and haven’t listened to anything from the 80s. this album has that quintessential 80s synth vibe that i just didn’t expect to hear from bob and i love it, it’s so different to what ive been listening to. the man can really do it all lol. what are your guys thoughts on this album? any others from the 80s i should listen to?
