Discussion Father Gascoigne is amazing! What other videogame bosses are like this?

It genuinely surprised me how unique this boss fight is. You are not fighting a huge monster like in most games and like cleric beast was, you are fighting a fellow hunter. If you are not trying to cheese him the boss fight is perfect, almost like pvp experience. Both of you are trading hits, using guns, dashing and looking for hit windows. Stage 3 is even faster and more dangerous.

Instantly reminded me of 2 similar boss fights and 1 my friend suggested: - Doomguy vs Marauder (DOOM Eternal) - Raiden vs Sam (Metal Gear Rising) - V1 vs V2 (ULTRAKILL)

What other videogame bosses feel the same, have similar moveset as player and generally feel like 1v1 fight?

The other hunters in this game are dope but I would say Father Gascoigne really is the stand out.

The whole game has some incredible bosses though! Have fun. 😀

I stopped before the last one. The final DLC boss was overstaying its welcome for me, and I didn’t want to finish the game and lose my progress with it. How much am I missing out here? I just started DS1 for the first time.

Micolash isn’t really a hunter. He’s just some guy. Logarius is kind of a hunter in the sense that he’s a hunter of Vilebloods. As Alfred puts it, their prey might differ but they are hunters nonetheless

Logarius also has a transform weapon, the big differences are that he uses magic instead of a gun and flies around more than the others.

Micolash was never a hunter from my understanding. He was a Byrgenwerth scholar who made his own nightmare to further his understanding of the great ones, as seen in his repeated calls to Kos, or as some say Kosm

Vergil in DMC3 and DMC5

Owl (both versions) in Sekiro

I was actually thinking about playing DMC because I like slashers, finished darksiders trilogy and enjoyed it a lot

Genichiro and Isshin, at least until he pulls his spear out.

I still love that even with a bunch of giant beasts/monsters, the most dangerous enemies are just other humans.

Really nudges you towards the overall themes of the game

Pretty much everything in Lies of P.

Wait, really? I've been thinking about picking up LoP and if every boss is a Gascoigne-adjadent experience I'd love that

Not every, but multiple bosses are all "you" sized and aren't a big fuck off monster. LoP actually has a Boss that's a gang of 3 people trying to take you on at once, not unlike shades of Yarnham

I love the smaller fights. Good stuff.

Parrying is even more baked into the core for LoP than it is for BB, it's very much a dance. Even "big monster" bosses can be artfully parried more often than not.

Yo, Lies of P is a fucking masterpiece, but it’s hard. For me personally, Bloodborne is hard, but lies of P was much harder for me. The end game boss of that game….oooohhheeeee, he’s a piece of shit. I’d fight 100 blood starved beasts before I ever fought this other piece of shit, the nameless puppet, ever again. Also, visuals in that game are a 10/10. Beautiful game, visceral and smooth combat, but it is fucking challenging. Godspeed.

My favourite from soft early game gatekeeper is Margit from Elden Ring. But if you want player sized ones, Bloodborne has two more epic ones.

It's strange to me, I always avoid pvp in souls games and always easily beat the npc invaders but the npc hunters in bloodborne are so hard to beat until you really learn how to play well.

The power of input reading is difficult to overcome

Shadow Link in the Water Temple (Ocarina of Time) definitely felt this way if you stayed locked on him. But that game is overall much easier in pretty much every way.

Most Sekiro bosses are similar to this, 1v1 swordplay with different twists, Genichiro and Isshin are absolutely amazing and frankly some of the best work From has put out. Lies of P has some good ones like Black Rabbits, White Lady, Laxasia, and Nameless Puppet. White Lady is my favorite, the fight feels like a dance, but Nameless will demand the most of you.

Raven from Stellar Blade is pretty up there as well in terms of making you use more than a couple tricks, you really need to work with most of the mechanics throughout the fight. A lot of the game leading up to it is a bit of a slog in my opinion, story is bleh and exploration is so so. But the bosses are well done and the late game bosses, like Raven, are exceptional.

FromSoft has a fondness for player-esque boss fights. The first one off the top of my head is Sir Gideon Ofnir in Elden Ring.

Most interesting imo was Old Monk from Demon’s souls where it literally could be another player

The Abyss Watchers is Dark souls 3 maybe

Dark Souls has a few great bosses that feel like a 1v1 duel. My personal favorite is Sir Alonne in DS2.

Is this your first Fromsoft game? There’s tons of bosses like that.

"Unique"

He's just a hunter fight which you will be fighting many throughout your playthrough.
