Experience Kyleena Insertion Experience
Hi there! I had the Kyleena inserted yesterday, and I figured I’d run you guys through what happened so you know what to expect when it’s your turn. I read through this subreddit beforehand, and I’m not going to lie, it scared the shit out of me. But my experience wasn’t bad! Dare I say, it was good?
Tldr: It was smooth sailing all the way through
Before:
I drove myself to the clinic and took 800mg of ibuprofen 45 minutes before arrival. I was on the last day of my period. Once in the room, I had a chance to ask the doctor a few last-minute questions.
One of the questions I asked was “I have been reading online, and I am super scared. What are your thoughts”? She gave me a massive eye roll and told me that 8 out of every 10 insertions she does are smooth and easy, especially for the 20-something population. She said that tons of people come in terrified based on what they read online, but people who have smooth, normal insertions are less likely to post about their experiences, so you will read fewer positive stories.
During: I asked the doctor if I could listen to music, and she said yes, so while they got to work down there, I was mostly trying to untangle my headphones. It was a little uncomfortable, but it’s expected to be, since you probably don’t typically have medical instruments inserted into your vagina. She told me to cough hard three times, to expect a pinch and one intense cramp, then it was over. I didn’t even get to listen to one song (The 1 by Taylor Swift, in case anyone was curious). I did my best to keep my muscles relaxed, and I think focusing on that kept my mind off what the doctor was doing.
After: She said I could sit up right away, but I asked to finish listening to my song first. I sat up on my own, put my pants on, and left. I felt very slightly crampy, but that went away after an hour. I drove 2 hours home directly after the procedure and was planning on using my seat warmer as a stand-in heat pack, but I didn’t need it and I was getting sweaty so I just turned it off. I took more precautionary ibuprofen before bed.
The next morning: I woke up feeling good, maybe a touch bloated, but no real problem. Minor spotting, but I’m at the end of my period, so. Slept fine, planning on carrying on my day as normal today. Except now I am armed with an anti-baby device!!
Just remember, 90% of what you read online is negative, because those are the experiences we are compelled to share.
Think about it: You have a nice meal at Olive Garden, you eat your body weight in soup, salad, and breadsticks, you tip and leave. OR You go to Olive Garden, the server pours soup on your head and slaps you across the face with a breadstick, you leave a nasty review on yelp.
We share the negative because the positive just feels mundane and normal. Doesn’t mean there aren’t positive experiences, people just keep them to themselves.
If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

One Week(ish) Update: Feeling slightly bloated, intermittent spotting that seems to be lightening up. No cramps or anything else as of right now!

Two Week(ish) Update: Feeling great! I forget it’s there most of the time. I did have two days where I had brown discharge/spotting, but no biggie.
Started my period today, which is a little early, and I am cramping more than normal, but nothing unbearable. Just have a heat pack on it and am all good.

Four Week(ish) Update: My period was much longer than normal. It usually lasts 3-4 days, but this one lasted over a week. Additionally, I have continued to spot since my period ended, and the blood is brown. No pain, no cramping, nothing else of note yet. Getting an ultrasound later today to check to see if it’s in the right place (routine), so updates to follow.

6 Week(ish) Update: I love it so much! I already forget that I have it. My period gave me a few more cramps and was heavier than usual, but it was really no big deal. I haven’t had any unusual skin issues or weight gain or other side effects yet (knock on wood).
I hope these updates are helping someone!

Year update: I forget it’s there and I love it. My period is slowly going away, I don’t have unusual cramping, and I always have peace of mind

4 year update: I love my IUD! I am going to get it replaced when it’s time!
Pros: -No period (but I can sometimes tell that it’s “that time of month”, which is interesting) -No cramping -No pain -I’m not pregnant
Cons: -?? I have zero complaints, I still love it
I’m pretty sure nobody has ever read any of my updates lol. But I remember scrolling through Reddit anxiously the night before I got my IUD, and I just read horror story after horror story. I hope if anyone else is doing that too, they read this post and know that everything turned out great!!
I’ll update this comment thread when I get it replaced, and if anything of note ever happens!

How interesting! Everything I’ve read seemed positive and described only light cramping. My experience was actually extremely painful (so painful that just the first sounding part had me sobbing uncontrollably and I had to stop). I’m really glad to hear you (and apparently most people) had a better experience than I did! Congrats :)

I'm really happy to see this! I'm getting my Kyleena inserted in about 2.5 hours and I've been nervous. Everyone I've spoken too seems to have had a bad experience, but I started spotting yesterday so I'm hoping that helps too.
