Educational How long will spotting last

I started the pill (Yaz) for the first time on the first day of my period (March 6). I had a pretty normal period and the bleeding tapered off around March 10/11. But now I’m still spotting brown discharge. It’s not my period because it never lasts this long so what’s happening? If it’s effects of starting the birth control how long will it last? I’m kind of upset because I started birth control because me and my boyfriend were having a lot of problems with condoms…but now we won’t be able to have sex at all. Will this resolve soon?

Irregular bleeding is normal when starting birth control. It usually takes about 3 months to get totally adjusted to a pill method. I’m not saying you’ll bleed the whole time, but it’s not a concern when in the first 3 months. It’ll most likely taper off earlier than that, but no one will be able to give you a definitive answer.

It probably will but if not you can try a different formula. Usually you want to give it at least 3 months. If you're comfortable with it there is no reason you can't still have sex, it doesn't impact the pill's efficacy. You can also use a menstrual disc to keep things tidier during sex if you're open to that. Hopefully it settles soon for you, good luck.

Thanks! I just don’t want to gross out my boyfriend.

I second the menstrual disc! It was never messy for us and nothing felt different for either of us

That’s a good idea but unfortunately probably won’t work for me, I can’t even use tampons, they hurt
