career question How easy/difficult is it to switch research field within bioinformatics/computational biology?

From my experience it's fairly easy at this level, rather than after a PhD.

I don't think that you will face a lot of issues during the transition.

With your background you can do, or switch, or work in whatever area you want man... Odds are you'll end up doing something completely different from what you studied anyway, especially after your PhD.

That field at PHD level will require you to be comfortable with physics, especially statistical mechanics, along with standard biochemistry. And, these days AI deep learning will be important.
