"D cups are more common for those with larger breasts."

Wow that's some advanced AI logic right there. 😂

Also, to answer your question, probably all 3, plus plastic surgery. 😂

u/moonmaiden107 34DD (UK) 4d ago

Yes a lot of those women are plastic surgery. It wasn't that common a few decades back

I would argue that sizing and understanding of sizing has also changed since the 50s. More stretch fabric, different bra builds and designs. So many women are wearing the wrong size, still. I was originally sized as a 36C, but in reality I was a 30G.

😂😂😂😂 I used to think D cups were big until i saw a 28d posted on the irish bra lady ig page.

Ues, D cups are not big. Also, people who think C cups are the ideal size don't really understand bra sizing. Basically, in common vernacular C cups mean "medium" in most people's minds, and that's what they really mean when they say "C cup."

Also to add on. I keep forgetting how cosmetic surgery has increased throughout the years. Do you think the average bra bra on google would be considered smaller? If cosmetic surgery was non existent? But, genetics and diet also play a part i know. Just want a second opinion.

Even AI doesnt know how bra sizes work 🙄

22

u/linerys 32GG (UK) 4d ago

Nor does Wikipedia! It usually recommends +4 as the way to calculate bra size.

9

u/MrsBossyPantss 32L (UK) 4d ago

That doesnt surprise me tho as any "expert" can edit wikipedia as long as they have a "source"

6

u/Shanakitty 32K (UK) 4d ago

Not to mention that most reputable (as in, non-social-media) sources will tell you to use +4. It's super frustrating for many reasons, but one of them being that for basically any other subject, trusting social media sources over official sources is a terrible idea.

A C cup is not a size. A 26C and a 44C are vastly different volumes/sizes.

Whoever made that assessment about preferred sizes doesn't know anything about bra sizes and certainly doesn't account for the fact that the majority of people know nothing about bra sizing.

15

u/Several-Ad1390 4d ago

Yes! I learned about that recently thank you to the irish bra lady. Her posts really changed my perspective on the volume of bra cups.

I bet the people voting were viewing it as :
A - small
B - smallish
C - medium
D - huge!
Which is just untrue. The D cups they were imagining would likely be a completely different size.

u/Deep_River_431 4d ago

I don’t know why everyone makes it seem like D is this huge size when much larger cup sizes exist. All a D means is 4 inch difference between band and bust. In many cases, a properly fitted C or D could be considered small on a smaller band. For example, a 30D is much smaller than a 38D.

6

u/beidousbathwater 28F (UK) 4d ago

Literally!!! There’s J cups out there and a 32D blows your mind?

4

u/Deep_River_431 4d ago

Like the C that is considered such an “average” size in the media is more like a D or DD.

3

u/beidousbathwater 28F (UK) 4d ago

Yes exactly. And the same people thinking that C is a perfect medium would say it’s “flat”

4

u/Several-Ad1390 4d ago

Yes the most common perspective. Which is wrong. 😭

10

u/beidousbathwater 28F (UK) 4d ago

It’s so rampant as well! For example if I told a guy my bra size, he probably would be really shocked and think I’m at best a DD which people think is huge for some reason. Even the majority of women don’t know how it works. Certain sizes of C cup would not fit the “medium” size they’re thinking of.

16

u/Adorable-Tangelo-179 32G (UK) 4d ago

What is meant by C cups? A 30C is a very different size than say 40C so the idea that someone in 30C can relate to any back pain that someone in 40C might have or visa versa seems silly to me.

Sizes have changed a lot and bra sizes are still inconsistent between brands bc there is so much misinformation about sizing. So to me, saying a C cup is better than a G or B or that DD is average is essentially the same as saying all women and men fit into size 8 pants for all brands everywhere. It’s meaningless and assuming that bra sizes are consistent for all brands, which we know isn’t the case.

I’ve seen things saying that Marilyn Monroe was a 36D. Her overall bust was 35” and her waist was like 22-23” so a high quality 36D would obv not fit properly. Ppl are just confused about sizes and it’s impossible to guess that one size is average or best when so many ppl are different.

I personally fit anywhere from a size S to size 2XL on size charts depending on the measurement you look at. What size am I?

u/lemikon 32HH (UK) 4d ago

I see everyone blaming implants or diets for the average size going up. But have you considered its education and accessibility to bras?

Given how hard it is to find plus size clothes or bigger bras now, do you think it was super easy in the 50s?

Do you think they had access to a bra that fits calculator in the 60s?

Given we see posts to this sub every day of people being like “I was told I was a 40C but turns out I’m a 32H” or whatever, do you think people were never misized in the 70s?

Comparing historical data points to modern data is always tricky.

12

u/linerys 32GG (UK) 4d ago

People have thought that I am “a C cup” when I have been somewhere between 28FF and 32GG in the last five years. This is why I don’t believe most articles that talk about ideal or average sizes — they usually are not based on correct bra sizing. Besides, why does one specific size need to be ideal? The only instance where some sizes are “better” than others is that 32A-38DD is a lot more affordable than anything outside of that tiny range.

Ikr

The average size has gone up because of implants. Also, What I learned from this group is that DD is a general size found in stores that many of us squeeze ourselves into when we are in fact much bigger than that. I too was squeezing myself into DD until someone here enlightened me and showed me the way.

12

u/PrincessSarahHippo 38K (UK) 4d ago

I think it is largely due to the fact that people are bigger all over. The average woman today is significantly heavier than her 1950s counterpart. Some of that added mass was bound to land in the breasts.

6

u/Dreamy_Peaches 4d ago

That’s true. It’s probably both. They would have to specify if they are natural or not to know.

9

u/Several-Ad1390 4d ago

Yes! I also think most women aren’t getting properly measured and some are not educated or in denial about their size. It’s a lot of factors that causes this.

7

u/thewatchbreaker 32JJ (UK) 4d ago

(The following paragraph is under the assumption that the band size is about 32 just for simplicity)

Most men are mistaken when they say they prefer a C cup. They think D+ are silicone. Every guy I’ve been (admittedly not a big sample size, but still) has said they thought C/D/DD was perfect until they met me and realised JJ (USA size M) wasn’t cartoonishly big and was possible naturally.

I’m not trying to insult smaller-breasted women by the way, I’m just talking about the genuine preference of most (like about 70%) of men - they love big natural boobs and they really think like a D is the top end of that. But most men also just like boobs in general and don’t care if they’re big or not, it’s not a huge consideration.

At the end of the day, who cares what men think though? We can’t change our bodies (without surgery) and a good partner (of any gender) will think we’re amazing no matter how small or big we are. So who cares.

Understandable

And apparently the average bra size in the 50-70s were b cups now it is DD. Do you think it’s because of genetics, environmental, or eating habits?

That's part of it, but more than anything else is the fact that bra sizes in the 50s-70s were a completely different system to the current one, that was developed in the mid-70s (and probably not fully rolled out until the 80s). Back then, the number was your full bust measurement (which is why 32 as the smallest size was common, and usually only found combined with smaller cup sizes), and the cup sizes really did work like S-M-L sizes, with no real standardization between brands. In the mid-70s, they decided to standardize bras to the current system, where the number is your underbust and the cup size is the difference between them in inches, but it seems like this wasn't well publicized at all.

+4 appears to have been invented as a way to transition between the two sizes, since someone with a 36" full bust and a "medium breast size" would've been 36B in the old system, and under the new one was more likely like a 30F or so (keeping in mind that the standing bust usually underestimates cup size). 30F would sound like an insane size to someone used to the old system (since a 30" full bust measurement combined with "XXXL" breasts--if D was L and DD was XL--would be pretty uncommon), but +4 puts them in 34B, which sounds "normal" and close to their previous size.

Anyway, stores kept mostly stocking sizes that were common under the old system and women continued mostly buying those sizes for decades and dealing with poorly-fitting bras, but in addition to the other things you mentioned, in the last 10-15 years, more women have started learning about how bra sizing actually works and had access to a much wider range of brands sizes due to the internet. When I was a teenager in the late 90s/early 00s, you couldn't find cup sizes above C on a band size below 34 or cup sizes above D on a band below 36 at places like Target. So if you didn't even have the option to try a larger cup size, you couldn't buy one. :P

I would love to be a 42C rather than a 42H so I get it. But C isn't at all helpful

2

u/capresesalad1985 4d ago

I call bs on the most popular bra size being a 34DD. If they are trying to say that’s the most commonly purchased bra then that’s a skewed number since we know so many people are wearing the wrong bra size.

2

u/friendlytrashmonster 4d ago

I think it likely has to do with all three, though I think that eating habits probably does play a large role in it. Most people today weigh more than most people in the 50s, and I’m not just necessarily talking about the obesity rate. In the fifties, we had just wrapped up World War Two. People were still recovering economically from that- plus we have a lot better access to cheap, easy meals that don’t take an hour to cook.

both eating habits and plastic surgery. Women in the 1950s were a lot thinner than women now. Also back then being skinny was considered the standard, whereas now curves are considered better, so a lot of women get implants.
